- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Headline should be a lot more descriptive
No digg. - Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like how Apple biased individuals tend to call this "slander" and claim "no digg" just becuase they don't like the thought of Apple doing something wrong. Get with the times, everyone fudges up and Apple is no different =)
On another note, most of em have apple avatars... - TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Maybe I should have underlined MAY."
No you probably should have said "Update may kill Memory slot on some Mac Powerbooks". That's accurate, and a lot less sensationalist (and just plain wrong) than your headline. I think good accurate headlines are important to making Digg a better site. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Headline is accurate for many, many Apple users. DIGG.
- mattmacg4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Happened to me... the lower slot went bad when I tried to put in two 1GB sticks in. PowerBook would boot but would eventually give way to a kernel panic -- within five minutes!
- sunmicroman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow. An article on Digg that doesn't sing the praises of Apple. Maybe I can start thinking of Apple outside the reality distortion field now.
- foshizol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe I should have underlined MAY.

Confusious Say:
"Man who update computer while still plugged in going to get shocking good time!" - macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm confused...article is about Apple (Digg), but it's not promoting Apple...what does a fanboi like me do?
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@dongiaconia
I just find slander to be a strong word. Reason? Well, if I had an Apple comp that went bad from this, the very way I would put it across to people is my Apple was "killed" or my Apple "died" after trying to upgrade it. I guess you could say that yea, the only word I woudl change is update because I use the term upgrade =P - foshizol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey just to let you all know I have nothing against Apple. To be perfectly honest if everyone on my work site used an Apple with OSX I wouldn't have a job.
I just found the article, and I know there's a lot of Apple users on Digg, and I thought my Digg brothers and sisters could use this information if you are having any problems. I didn't take into account the Apple zealots that say Apple can do no wrong.
If you think you have been misled then I'm sorry; but I'm a say- it-as- it-is kind of guy. To me the headline rings true, and its just to much work to spin a headline so no one will be offended. - mistert2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Two Powerbooks (Aluminum and Titanium) Full Slots...No Prob Bob.
- homer23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoa! this happened to me. i didn't put it together before, but my memory slot did stop working after i upgraded to 10.3.9.
- Zivko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lousy Headline. Links to another Blog. (Engadget)
Come on guys, don't be lazy, link to the real link. - e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks like this only happens on older Aluminum Powerbooks and Titanium Powebooks. - The new Hi-Res ones remain unaffected.
- mynameisnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sucks! When the new Microsoft Update messed up my Windows box, I thought reinstalling Office was bad!
- dmoffitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Happened to me... the lower slot went bad when I tried to put in two 1GB sticks in."
Happened to a friend of mine, not sure the resolution if any, but it helps to know it was software not a bad logic board, and that it should be fixable.
to answer CraigNobbs - sometimes companies turn a cold shoulder, not that I've had anything but EXCELLENT experience dealing with AppleCare, but lets just say I had to threaten Dell with a small-claims suit over a stupid $125 CD-RW drive -- I hate overly litigious people and societies, but at times, it's an unfortunate necessity of doing business in the USA. - thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1my lower RAM slot actually did go bad. I sent the computer to apple and they fixed it.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lawsuits are lame. If you have a problem with it, take it back. Why does every little thing require a lawsuit? Now if Apple refuses to fix it or recognize the problem, then sure a lawsuit is warranted.
- dBass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My 15" PowerBook has full sluts, ah I meant slots and latest update. No problems.
Not crazy about this kind headline. - jet3004, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Headline shouldn't be so slanderous.
No digg. - theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hahahahahaha serves them right for using apple.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is IMPOSSIBLE! Apples are BETTER! This can't happen! http://www.robert.to/reports/appleblah.html
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On my 12" 1GHz pb: the additional 512mb chip worked fine until I updated to 10.4. After that the system doesn't recongize the additional ram. Even after a reformat back to 10.3.x with the OEM dvd.
Tried known good ram & pram reset, same issue.
The system is about 9 months out of warranty.
Thanks for nothing Apple. - Maccer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no company is perfect not even Apple, true stuff like this has happened before but Apple has been good on fixing the problem, i mean is any computer perfect/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Update can kill any computers, Duh..
kiltak
http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com - NormanEinstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This happened to my 12" Powerbook. Luckily it's still under warranty and Apple fixed it up, but the tech guy at the store did mention that he's seen it on quite a few of the slightly older Powerbooks that upgraded. Yikes. Maybe I won't be upgrading anything else for a while.
- zen.state, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why is it only laptops that are effected?
- CraigNobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are some Americans so lawsuit happy? In it just for a freebie? Possibility to get a free ride through life on someone else' dime?
It's probably just an honest mistake. Must you always jump on the lawsuit bandwagon? Come on, really. So something bad happens. It's not the end of the world. Call up Apple, let them know, and work it out with them.
You lawsuit-happy people make me sick. - groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for the informative aspect of the story and not the delicious Apple f***-up.
- WebCester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you ever heard about the 1.8Ghz SP bug? Introduced with Tiger, finally got terminated a month ago. More info here: http://g5freeze.com/
Seems to me they should have done some more testing on Tiger before rushing it out the door. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what do you say about them bad apples, apple users!
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mine went out right after warranty expired. They're gonna have to address this problem. I digg
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"To me the headline rings true, and its just to much work to spin a headline so no one will be offended."
Your headline isn't accurate. The update doesn't "kill" the computer, it knocks out one of the memory slots. The computer still works, it just loses access to some of it's RAM. Yes this is a big deal, and Apple should be taken to task for it, but I expect, and it seems to be largely true that they are fixing the computers for the people. So in your headline if you change the word "Kill" to "cripple", and "computer" to "powerbook" and possibly add the two words "memory slot" it suddenly goes from sensationalist, and misleadingly attention grabbing, to actually accurate. Of course it wouldn't get as much attention, and maybe not to the front page, which I'm sure was why you made the headline so sensational. But what is honesty, and integrity when a minute ammount of public recognition is at stake? - silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... well the linked story has a comments section and there are plenty of people saying it was fixed quite quickly and free of charge by Apple. It'd be bad customer relations to do otherwise. Look up some XBox f-ups and you don't get as many good stories from "those other guys". Apple has always (in my experience and by anecdotal evidence) been responsible to their customers when a problem like this is found (ie, when it's Apple's fault).
- bryantee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure they'd be glad to fix it. They wouldn't leave someone out to dry if it was because of Apple's fault.
- popetorak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0HAHAHA
- skyfex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And once again it is proven that Apple flamers are a bunch of childish 14-year-old kids.
I had this problem, I think. (It was a while ago) I sent it in and got it fixed within 5 days. - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0LOL NOOBZ!!1
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here is the link to the lawsuit.
https://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/apple_powerbook_classaction - silent1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't see people jumping all over the dell battery fiasco ... grow up.
- degree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0but omgz, apple cant do anything wrong. I mean, steve jobs would never do that to me. Bill Gate$ and all those other ***** from micro$oft probably coded the update just to make apple look bad!!!!! but liek lol, its k cause apple is liek cool and trendy and stuff and i dont even ned 4 my comp to liek work n stuff u know???? its just liek, lol, dud, i got liek dis apple at starbucks lololol my blog is cool.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have all updates and all ram slots full, no issues yet.... but thanks for the heads up just incase
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0more apple slime.
face it apple is run by big bill gates from his basement.
no digg - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0all updates installed and everything is still running smoothly. My computer does freeze up when I put 2GB's of ram in, but I think because the ram is bad, because when I switched slots, it worked fine.
- Zorkon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ah yes...
In the good ol' US of A, *everything* sounds like a lawsuit. - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@dabellah
So using the term KILL sounds non-slanderous for something that screws up a memory slot?
and COMPUTER sounds accurate when it only affects power books? - robg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have a titanium, updated and both of my Rams are just fine. One of those things I don't think they can prove..
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I own a 15" aluminum Powerbook and upgraded the RAM, filling the slots with third-party memory. That was a year and a half ago. No problems thus far. Overall, it's been a great little workhorse.
