- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone else besides me think that Apple will just release a patch (whenever it's ready) that will let the existing color screen iPods (And future color screen iPods) be able to manage video? I just don't see Apple adding yet another iPod to the family just for video purposes when all of the existing color screens have the 'capability' to do so, just not the software support.
Could just be me though :/And I could be horribly wrong. - ncaa76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this only makes since; Macworld SF Expo is where Steve Jobs makes all his big announcements of the year. January 9-13, 2006 is when it will be official.
- castufari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, an apple thread where there no flames or badmouthing. Is mac- hating dead now? What are all the cool kids nowadays flaming?
Maybe their having nap time or, since it's 7:52pm EST, they're all tucked into bed. - mikoslav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, I learned absolutely nothing new. Good thing there's analysts out there, or Apple wouldn't know what to do next...
- snatchedlaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but i think apple wont make a patch as they will lose money. Better to make people pay for an iPod and a video iPod than just release a patch
- MacMan88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is what an analyst thinks...not what apple is going to do. thanks, but i'd rather get my info on the ipod video from thinksecret.com than this.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone ever tried to watch video on a portable media center or pocket pc before? I'm with Steve Jobs, it sucks.
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want a colour mini!
- ccrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm wondering if the color mini / new shuffle will be their holiday-season product while a video iPod might need to test the waters a bit earlier than the holiday season.
- snatchedlaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A mini video iPod would be good and they need to be cheaper
- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That certainly seems to be the case most of the time with Apple. But I hope Apple realizes the potential dangers of releasing new feature-rich devices while there are literally millions of brand new iPod owners since last year. Technology always gets better, yes, but outdating all of your new consumers 'toy's' could lead to a drop in sales of both video and audio/photo iPods. Just my opinion though. I do plan to get a new iPod to replace my 3G whenever they come out with a video capable iPod or software patch for the existing ones.
- chesterton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple has not typically introduced patches that enable major new functions. The only slight exception was the podcast features on the latest product, but that was a pretty minor addition. Being able to bookmark MP3's is nice, tho.
The chip in the current generation of iPod is not supposed to be powerful enough to effectively decode H.264. - castufari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remember the WatchMan? :P
xbm:
I bought one in May...you won't regret it. Yes, the capacity isn't huge but I use it for audio books and stuff. Load it up, plug it into my cassette deck, I'm good to go. Beats the heck out of radio or having to swap CDs. For 129.00 it's paid for itself. I use it daily, about 10 minutes/day on M/W/F then 3 to 4 hours/day on Tuesdays/Thursdays. I've used it to the point where it's cost me about 50 cents/hr. - xbmcrules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Darn I just bought a shuffle today
- gothicgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the iPod, it is a great video player, and its simple. A little too simple. Apple is way behind the curve on video, I think the market is ready for a portable video player. Several other companies seem to agree as they already make portable video players. Apple always takes too long to innovate, albeit when they do its awesome. But sometimes its nice to have the latest technology when it actually is the latest. Such as the two button mouse. Congratulations Apple, you've joined the rest of the 20th century. Why couldn't they have done this long ago? The "Mighty Mouse" is cool, but its not revolutionary. Just like I am sure if the Video iPod ever comes out, it will be cool, but I can't imagine it being worth this long of a wait. The only thing that could change my mind is if Apple is able to get a monumental deal with all major movie and tv studios, to allow users to get their content on the player easily. But I don't see this happening. I think if i'm ever in the market for a portable video player i'll just get something like the Creative Zen.

It doesn't have to be good enough. H.264 is the highest quality quicktime codec yet, but the iPod will not need the 'highest quality' video because of the size of the screen. The screen's limited amount of pixels in the display area will make even lower quality video look good. H.264 is cutting edge for HD displays and whatnot. However, since H.264 is becoming a standard in video transfer, and the current iPods cannot play it, then iTunes can feature a seamless 'converter' to compress the video into something the current ipods can handle as it transfers videos to your iPod. - rlrman27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe they want a chip in the video iPods that could decode H.264 so that when hooked up to an HD set the movie could be displayed at that high quality.
- speg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent! I just commited to buying a shuffle, but suspected a new version would be coming soon, and now I have some evidence of that :)

but Apple does have a knack for coming out with revolutionary products, so don't count it out completely - mojofrojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, an apple thread where there no flames or badmouthing. Is mac- hating dead now? What are all the cool kids nowadays flaming?
