- badqat, on 01/16/2009, -4/+125Yes, Apple really needs to build on the success of the Pippin.
- Scott2, on 01/16/2009, -11/+88This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard - "Mac gaming" is nearly an oxymoron. Then again, this article is from the same group of bozos who had an article earlier this week called "imagine how great the world would be with no property rights at all".
- shanesemler, on 01/16/2009, -23/+80Let's see, an Apple game console you say? It'd probably cost about 175% more than the other consoles, have games that cost twice as much and come with a free obnoxious attitude. It'd be like an overbearing version of the PS3, except white. With a piece of fruit on it. And Steve Mob's pee.
- WinGeek, on 01/16/2009, -1/+42So Apple removes the mac from OS X for trademark legal purposes and that means they may make a stand-alone game console? Sorry folks, this is nothing more than good trademark protection.
- falafelkiosken, on 01/17/2009, -3/+28Microsoft really needs to build on the success of Bob.
wait, what - rebotfc, on 01/17/2009, -4/+28Well they did build on the success of the newton with the iPhone.
- rakeshishere, on 01/16/2009, -5/+21Didn't they already make a console?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/12/apple-the-iphon ... - inactive, on 01/16/2009, -1/+16Yea they removed the "Mac" and they used OS X on the AppleTV and the iPhone/iPod touch. So what's new? Granted the AppleTV and Mobile OS X platforms have a lot of potential. But jumping to the conclusion that Apple gives a ***** about gaming just boggles the mind...
- dujkan, on 01/16/2009, -21/+35i don't think apple can compete now with sony, nintendo and microsoft with a game console. but few years down the road- who knows...
- 3nder99, on 01/17/2009, -4/+18They are digging you down because they don't want to acknowledge the massive disadvantage Apple would be at in such a situation. Everyone is used to making games for Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. The market is saturated with products for these systems.
Simply put the video game console market is already filled past capacity.
If Apple doesn't mind losing a couple tens of billions of dollars though, I am sure they would eventually be able to do mediocre sales that may or may not someday let them break even. To anyone who thinks otherwise please go look at the costs that Sony and Microsoft have had to absorb to stay competitive. - regeya, on 01/17/2009, -5/+18Several pundits didn't think Microsoft could compete, but with the original XBox they proved that idiots would buy a Windows-running PC in a funny case.
- grumpyrain, on 01/16/2009, -9/+21Don't be silly. It would only cost a fraction more than PS3, and in the graphics department would really give Wii a run for its money. And it isn't just white; you can get it silver, black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red or pink.
- adiggityam, on 01/17/2009, -1/+12I'd rather be able to play my PC games in OS X.
- potatolicious, on 01/17/2009, -3/+12It's BS. The author is a tool who probably doesn't even use a Mac. He's basing his entire prediction on the fact that Apple trademarked "OS X" in addition to the usual "MacOS X" name.
... Most of the Mac-user community calls it "OS X", few people call it "MacOS" anymore, except the old-timers who were there before X dropped. It makes perfect sense for Apple to step in and protect this name. - repruhsent, on 01/17/2009, -0/+8Buried for not knowing anything about multitasking and operating systems, yet pretending as if he does.
- DuMbGuM, on 01/17/2009, -1/+8I wish I had've bought a much less expensive Windows based laptop that could've actually ran decent games and maybe even had a BluRay drive, more ram or a faster CPU.
Thats right I regret getting a Mac. - hazello, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6It's a multitasking system just like Linux or Windows for that matter. I'm sure processes can have all the power they'd like; there's no technical reason games can't be just as good on OS X as any other OS.
- Philbert, on 01/17/2009, -1/+7You really think Apple would be that open after how tightly they've got the iPhone locked down?
- Fib0112, on 01/17/2009, -1/+7A price tag higher than Sony's?
- archer75, on 01/17/2009, -1/+7I just don't see apple doing well here. They have never taken gaming seriously and the market is pretty full of consoles at the moment.
Rather I see apple in some sort of a partnership with nintendo. - JaycobC, on 01/17/2009, -2/+8iPlay, iDance, iGuitar iHero, iHalo. All titles you can expect on the newest games console, the iGame! Made with the hopes and dreams of America's crippling economy, the iGame is the perfect console for teenage whores, jobless mothers, and people that can't bear the reality of losing!
Playing is simple, with only one button and no wires, and it comes in several thousand different colours to perfectly suit your lifestyle.
Buy your iGame for $2699 today! - David513, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5It would make just as much sense to ask whether Apple is about to make OS X for spaceships. In other words, the article (and the people speculating about the issue) are just plain making things up. Yes, Apple wants games for the iPhone, but to make this idiotic leap to the notion that the company is going to make a console is beyond ignorant. It's just plain stupid. It is not going to happen.
- etx313, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5This makes me laugh.
- dandonia, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5Which is why a games console running osx makes sense. If they were to release a console and get developers making games for it - they could run directly on a mac. Imagine if a 360 disc worked on a PC. If Microsoft did this - noone would need to buy a 360 because everyone has a PC - if Apple did this though, not only would it grow the games library on a mac giving you a good reason to buy a mac - it would give them a great low level system that would grow their brand.
Apple entering the console market this minute would only make sense if it blew the current machines out of the water. They would be better off announcing it asap - in order to get developers on board, then releasing the machine in a couple of years time, when the games library is decent.
It could replace the mac mini as a low level entry to mac's. A console for apple wouldn't be about growing a new market it would be about getting more share of the PC/OS market. Why would you run windows over osx if OSX had a massive games library that works with Apples console. - Zippo, on 01/16/2009, -9/+14The iPhone is already considered a gaming platform... A lot of gaming critics are reviewing iPhone game apps already, as if the iPhone were just another console.
I doubt Apple's going to dive head-first into the full-on gaming market, though. They'll likely keep with the iPhone and Mac and hope people continue to make games for them. Sure, there aren't MANY games for the Mac, but there are some. - MrFurious2k, on 01/17/2009, -1/+6Doesn't nintendo really hold the same space as a would be Apple gaming system?
- se7envii, on 01/17/2009, -2/+6It'll never happen.
- DuMbGuM, on 01/17/2009, -1/+5"Buy your iGame for $2699 today!"
Its slightly funny because they inevitably will. - Philbert, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4Sounds like you're describing a Neo Geo
- talonh, on 01/17/2009, -1/+5In my time on digg I have seen some fanboy jerk fests but I think you two have just taken the prize. I feel a little abused just reading your Nintendo/Apple fantasy. I hope you both use privacy mode when you posted.
- grovest4life, on 01/17/2009, -1/+5A shinier finish.
- deepleet, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4And it will be bundled with Duke Nukem Forever!
- mrBitch, on 01/17/2009, -4/+7@ 3nder99 RE: " Exactly my point regeya.
Go look over Microsofts profits in doing that.
MEDIOCRE. "
Well since Apple was never a phone handset manufacturer EITHER, it seems to have done pretty well for it's first ever phone... - MrViklund, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3Won't happen...
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3You're ***** weird.
- doctordbx, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3Why would Nintendo want to partner with Apple? Seriously?
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3I like the 5 button remote. My grandpa figured out how to use it. And he's 87.
I could see them releasing a weird hybrid appleTV, mac mini, console system.
But as far as the ol' apple TV, I could see them adding a Download and play casual game section.
Peggle would be the number one seller. - akatsuki, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3Total BS.
They have consistently screwed game developers over with promises of new gaming initiatives that never materialize. They would need something the equivalent of DirectX, and you don't get that without hiring a ton of specialist programmers... No such hiring has been leaked or rumored, therefore, game console = *****. - Torley, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3PIPPIN ZOMBIE
ARISE FROM YOUR GRAVE - MacParrot, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3No thank you on an Apple gaming console. They could possibly use the AppleTV and add iPhone games to it but a dedicated console? NFW.
Trademarking OS X without Mac in it could be something different though. Maybe finally licensing OS X. Won't happen while Jobs is still alive though. - DeepFreezed, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4the controller will have only one button and certain to give carpel tunnel syndrome
- WestN, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4die rumor die
- regeya, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2What the hell is so offensive about ASKING about Cider?
- kenshin128, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Why would Apple even try to make a game console, when they can't even get developers to dev games on the Mac.
- Philbert, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2iCrap
- Philbert, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Altered Beast. At one point I had played through it so many times I could finish it with just the sound alone, no TV.
- UKsHaDoW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2It's more powerfull then PSP and DS, hardware wise.
- inactive, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2@mrBitch
if it was running OSX, they could use all the games they currently have for OSX as a launch point for the console. They could just discount them and sell them in the itunes store. I would bet they would announce it and give the developers 2 months to shipping date to port their current offering.
There is actually a lot of games that would play right from the getgo. COD4 etc.
http://www.apple.com/games/ - UKsHaDoW, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2That acutally sounds kinda good. Minus the drm.
- Koadan, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Apple's business model is built around high profit margin on hardware and there is usually a negative profit margin on consoles for the first few years.
