- DaffyDuck, on 11/25/2007, -1/+63Guys, every post that makes it on the front page of the Apple section is not an attempt to brag how OS X is better than Windows and Linux. This is one such case. Enough of the, "well xyz can do this too" posts. Thanks to this post, I now have this handy plugin installed. I already had the ability to view inside zip files with 3rd party software similar to 7zip but now I can see the contents by simply hitting the spacebar.
- wilhel1812, on 11/25/2007, -1/+48Guys, if you think this is the same as winrar or 7zip, you're just plain stupid...
Select a file, tap space and you get the file listing. you dont have to launch winrar or 7zip or some other application, just tap space. and this is also free. - jakbrud, on 11/25/2007, -0/+39Dugg for offering the plugin as a zip file
- Bob042, on 11/25/2007, -0/+23It's for quick look on Mac OS X Leopard. It lets you see the contents of a .zip by just highlighting the file and pressing the space bar, as opposed to opening a separate program to view the contents.
- samadam, on 11/25/2007, -1/+23This guy is awesome. Folder and zip quick look are just what we need. Now a hacked stacks options would be great.
- Leonffs, on 11/20/2009, -1/+23Not using quick look. You could obviously just open the ZIP and view the files.
- wilhel1812, on 11/25/2007, -0/+21exactly!
- xkorbin, on 11/25/2007, -0/+19Among other zips of pictures ;)
- wilhel1812, on 11/26/2007, -1/+17please tell me where it says that apple was first
- Kakcoo, on 11/25/2007, -1/+11I think this will come handy for zip'd family pictures.
- Zippo, on 11/26/2007, -1/+11hopefully we can hope to see many more Quick Look plugins from here on.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -0/+10Beautiful.
- wilhel1812, on 11/25/2007, -2/+12no
- wilhel1812, on 11/25/2007, -1/+10what do you mean by hacked stacks options?
- luchid, on 11/26/2007, -1/+9You haven't even bothered to read the article... have you? Besides WinRAR sucks, try 7-zip. It's open source and free.
- Tenoq, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6You guys are as bad as the Linux people saying FreeNAS could already do what Windows Home Server does. No and no. Read, learn, understand what the ***** product can do before making comparisons. Eg, FreeNAS didn't have single instance storage, last time I checked, and Windows doesn't have anything like this Quick Look thing - the built-in zip viewer in XP is NOT the same thing.
- Me1000, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6well if the file is a few gigabytes...
- Berrex, on 11/26/2007, -2/+7Dude, we don't freaking care. So Linux and Windows has been able to do this for so many days/months/years. Good for you, we don't care.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Why are people who don't even know what quicklook is commenting on its attributes?
- hermeslyre, on 11/25/2007, -0/+5There are programs out there, but they can't just extract the PW, it's more complicated, at least from my knowledge. They have to brute force the the zip or rar. In other words they attempt to discern the PW through random letters and numbers.. this can take a very long time, months, years if the password is long.
- xplayman, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5This is a great plugin. I love this plugin.
- hermeslyre, on 11/25/2007, -0/+5To be honest, I didn't know this was a Mac app. My first thought and the subsequent reply was towards Windows being the subject. Then I saw my mistake, and instead of looking like a complete fool, I edited. :o :D
- Me1000, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5not quite, I dont want to navigate the contents, I want to see what the contents are before I extract them, so that I dont wast my time. While XP lets you do this, it gets in the way. whereas quicklook just comes up with the tap of the spacebar, and goes away with another tap.
- rakous, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5This is a very useful tool, I like it so far not only because its sleek looking but it looks fast too.
- Me1000, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4judging by your username Id say you a pretty big linux fanboy!
let me just say though, why is that you feel the need to say anyone who buries someone is a fanboy? I mean I dont go around to windows stories and say, "oh no, you said something good about OS X, now you will get dugg down!"
Seriously, let people do what they want. that is what the thumbs up and thumbs down buttons are for! - Me1000, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5you're telling me windows lets me hit the space bar and see what is inside a zip?
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4OS X is what Linux aspires to be.
- wilhel1812, on 11/25/2007, -0/+4didn't know that. i dont have anything against 7zip, nor winrar. they are both great apps, but you ahve to see what this is and what it's not
before posting stuff about "windows can do this and windows can do that". the fact is that if you want something, you will get it to work. the
differences between the different OS is how it's done and how fast it's done. - KaavErik, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4I liked the folder quicklook plugin, but I really love this! Smooth!
- HappyScrappy, on 11/25/2007, -0/+4How about just a plugin that makes it possible to extract the contents of passworded (esp. AES-256) .zip files under Tiger?
- luchid, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6A Microsoft powertool for a Leopard function? You didn't even read the article...
- manitoba98xp, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4Again, as many have said above, there were already plenty of archival tools for OS X. This allows you to quickly preview the contents of a zip file using Leopard's Quick Look feature (which many people like, and some don't). That's it. Nobody's claiming that listing the contents of a zip file is new.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3The point isn't: "Mac has it, the others don't". The point is: "Mac has it". It is directed at Leopard users. It is a new add-on feature. Grow up.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3So, I shouldn't use it because you have? THINK!
- DaffyDuck, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2You are missing one of the features of Quick Look. If I am in a folder with many zip files, with QL I can just use the arrow keys to "look" through all of the files very quickly. Quick Look displays whatever is selected in the finder and it does not steal focus from the Finder. 7Zip requires you to launch and close it for every zip file.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2The lack of Mac OS X previewing zipped folders, sort of made me avoid ZIP Folders. Don't know, but that seems pretty useful. Can't wait to try.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3First you say Windows does it, then you link to a third party application. You would have to open WinRAR first... navigate to the file, then ask WinRAR to look inside. What "quicklook" does is simply give you a peak inside, including thumbnails of images, just by hitting the spacebar while the file is selected or by right clicking the file and choosing "quicklook". It is a functionality built into the OS.
- jgtg32a, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Knowledge == Dugg down?
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Not "quickly".
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Which ones?
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1The OS or some third party app?
- HappyScrappy, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Death to Stuffit. I'll check unarchiver, but really that's not the point. The point is I have to bring a unzip program with me (I use 7za) so that I can unarchive the passworded zip files I carry around, because I can't count on people having unarchiver or Stuffit.
- HappyScrappy, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1No, I mean even if I have the password.
OS X's built in .zip file handling cannot handle passworded .zip files.
There is a 3rd party program (BetterZip?) that can but it costs money and stuff like this should be built in. - Steeple, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1"stuffit" does that, i think "unarchiver" does, and the "pathfinder" finder replacement has it built in
- wilhel1812, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1that would have been great.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0Ya that's true... but its not that much harder to do with 7zip.
7zip:
1. Select file then press Enter.
2. 7zip loads showing the contents of the zip file. No loading time because files don't need to be extracted.
3. To close, click the close button, press alt+f4, or press ctrl+w.
4. Press the down/up arrow to the next file. Press enter to open and ctrl+w to close. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 11/26/2007, -1/+1Because they probably are.
Secondly I made the comment on a Windows Machine.
My Username is satire, not a flame. - inactive, on 11/26/2007, -2/+27zip:
1. Double-click file. (Make sure you have zip files associated with 7zip. 7zip> Tools> Options> Select All> OK)
2. 7zip loads showing the contents of the zip file. No loading time because files don't need to be extracted.
3. To close, click the close button, press alt+f4, or press ctrl+w.
Zip.qlgenerator
1. Select file then press spacebar.
2. Zip contents are shown. No loading time because files don't need to be extracted.
3. To close, press spacebar.
Yes, this is pretty much the same. Other than the looks, the difference is how you close it. It's not that much harder to press ctrl+w than spacebar. - Goobernutz, on 11/26/2007, -6/+5dugg for the "apple" reference and no other reason. oh yea, and to piss of the gay M$ fanboiz.
btw - replying to this proves that your gay
