- P5ycHo, on 01/03/2009, -0/+43and Gizmodo has instructions? F*ck Gizmodo.
These are the guys that did it & where the real deal is at: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ - badqat, on 01/03/2009, -1/+27Threat? Heck no, it's a boon to Apple!
- rolf, on 01/03/2009, -2/+20You are wrong. Microsoft was (and is) a computing platform monopoly and it was using it's leverage in anti-competitive ways to force their other products to win (IE vs Netscape, etc). It's not the same situation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Micr ...
Apple is not a monopoly. Not in computers, not in music players, not in music stores, and definitely not in phones. There are many other phone providers out there. When and if it ever does become a monopoly, your argument might have more merit. As it is, there are several different phones that are exclusive to one carrier or other. Nobody complains because they aren't as desirable.
iPhone and the required plan too expensive? Don't buy it. I'm waiting myself for a prepaid one because of that. - P5ycHo, on 01/03/2009, -2/+15The world is much bigger than the 300 million living in the US.
- NinjaPig, on 01/03/2009, -0/+12You are wrong. You can use UMTS/HSDPA in other parts of the world. Not in america, though. They addressed this in the article, if you bothered to read it.
- GDOG5, on 01/03/2009, -0/+9I can now unlock my iPhone 3G pretty easily but i still cant find an easy way to unlock my old nokia 6280 without paying. Its kind of frustrating.
- Diggnabbit, on 01/03/2009, -2/+10It's because the iPhone does not have a monopoly on the cellphone, or even the smartphone, market.
- zwaldowski, on 01/03/2009, -1/+8Please know what you're talking about. iPhone 3G can very easily be activated using QuickPwn at the same time you jailbreak it.
- StriderNemesis, on 01/03/2009, -0/+6Well, if anyone is interested, the iPhone 3G has been available in Mexico with prepaid service for a couple of months now. The 8GB version costs $8899 MXN (around $675 USD) and the 16GB version $10,349 MXN (around $785 USD) national sales tax included (if you buy it in a state near the border, it'll be cheaper). It's expensive, but it's an option to get it without having to sign a contract.
http://www.telcel.com/iphone/amigokit.html - r3zonance, on 01/03/2009, -3/+7Under a free market, this sort of thing is specifically allowed. It's the definition of free market in fact.
Stop being such a sensationalist, let me guess you want an iPhone on a different network? - eldridgea, on 01/03/2009, -1/+5If you buy the original iPhone (not 3G) from ebay or craigslist or somewhere, AT&T will let you set up a prepaid plan with it. Although you still have to pay $30/month for the data charge.
- aristotle0dude, on 01/03/2009, -0/+4@MarkyBear: All of Asia is CDMA? Really?
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtm ...
I'm sure there is some CDMA still in use but it is falling by the wayside now.
@BabyWookie: He would also lose 3G on the new iPhone since T-mobile in the US use non-standard frequencies for their 3G network. - badqat, on 01/03/2009, -0/+4I'm going to guess that Apple cannot wait for the exclusivity to be up. And AT&T has no stick they can use on Apple. Motorola tried that once...and it got them nothing.
I've said it before...once Verizon drops the CDMA trash and moves to LTE (along with AT&T), Apple will be selling an iPhone on Verizon as well. - GTOFan350, on 01/03/2009, -0/+4...and don't hold your breath either. I don't even think the iPhone's hardware is compatible with CDMA which is the equivalent to cassette tapes compared to mp3. I just switched from a CDMA network (alltel) and I notice an immediate difference. With Alltel I got fine reception but as soon as I left my area, I switched to Roaming which is annoying cuz your using verizons towers. Plus I do a lot of traveling and my house in PA is pretty isolated and with Alltel I had no reception or had to get into weird positions to get a signal. AT&T gets better reception, more coverage and the plan I got through my work is really cheap plus I'm sharing it with my fiance' so its cheap for both of us. I love my iPhone!
- ineptsavant, on 01/03/2009, -0/+3I bought and use an Iphone 3g in China. They are expensive, but not to hard to find unless you live in a very small city. This unlock makes it them even easier to use. No more sim adapter. Though there is not legit channel to get one through Apple. They don't sell them here :(
- Sheethappens, on 01/03/2009, -13/+16You know, many levels of Govt in USA have attacked, sued and forced Microsoft to do exactly what Apple is getting away with - an anti competitive practice! Apple should not have the right to sell a phone and tell people which carrier they HAVE to choose, no choice as to what the person wants who buys an Iphone. Heck, in Australia, I have an Iphone using Vodafone and I know others who use it with other carriers.
So why are American Govts of differing levels kicking the CRAP out of Microsoft for being allegedly anti competitive but allowing Apple to get away with it? After all, Apple is killing off competitions between mobile phone carriers over there. If every single mobile phone provider did the exact same thing and all chose A.T.&T. then any other carrier would die off instantly. Wake up Americans! Get on to your local Congressman(woman?) and let them KNOW that this means that A.T.&T. can charge whatever they like for using their service to Iphone users and that there is nothing you can do about it if you dont know how to hack the phone so you HAVE to pay what they demand! Competition would make things cheaper! - inactive, on 01/03/2009, -0/+3who said otherwise?
.... - tnoy, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3You can't use AT&T's 3G network with the G1 for the same reasons you can't use the iPhone on T-Mobile's 3G network.
If you just want an unlocked G1, you can just buy the developer version. - KibibyteBrain, on 01/03/2009, -1/+4Well, to consumers. But Apple serves two masters in this setup, and AT&T is bigger than the consumers. I doubt AT&T is overjoyed that Apple is 2 for 2 in having hacked and unlocked handsets. Apple is already learning the hard way what happens when you upset your corporate partners right now with the music industry.
- ted510, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3All of Asia is not CDMA. Most of Asia is GSM actually with some CDMA, only South Korea and Japan are the special CDMA ones!
GSM > CDMA
SIM Card > ESN - tnoy, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Are you retarded?
- kreatre2007, on 01/03/2009, -1/+3OOOOO-K... But I can't use my iPhone on anything but AT&T. I can unlock it and use it on T-Mobile but, then I lose my warranty and I lose features. I would also have to put up with the inconvenience of having to continually update the jailbreak software. That's not choice. You must work for a wireless carrier if you really see this industry has providing "multiple choices". Consumers should be able to move freely between mobile carriers. Imagine if Apple sold you a MacBook Pro that was locked onto AT&T DSL of if Dell sold Inspiron notebooks that were tied to Verizon Fios. Would you consider that to be just? Consumers won't put up with being locked to an internet carrier and we should not have to put up with being locked into one carrier just because we want to have a specific kind of mobile phone. Exclusivity is fine for a while but, If you're unhappy with the quality of the service, you should be able to move to another carrier without having to switch phones. The fact that we have the different network standards makes that hard to do.
- fr34k5h0w, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2Good luck with that. Why do you think the Storm doesn't come with WiFi? The battery would keel over in several hours since CDMA is such a battery whore.
@GTOFan350 - it depends what part of the country you are in. Here in Nebraska you have GSM service along the interstate and very little elsewhere. Alltel runs all of the CDMA towers in Nebraska. Needless to say I have Alltel, but I would love to get a GSM phone, either the iPhone (not through AT&T, unlocked) or Nokia N96. - DuMbGuM, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2Do you have prepaid ones in the US? I got mine here in Ireland a few months ago, no contract FTW.
- ddfall, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2You sir are blocked and reported. Good day.
- JoelJ, on 01/03/2009, -1/+3That's pretty sweet.
- ddfall, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2Well, first off they're less than 400.00 GBP and don't post blog spam please.
- BabyWookie, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2@kreatre2007:
You can unlock it using a $15 proxy SIM card and not lose your warranty. The only feature that you would be missing is Visual Voicemail. Also, for any one who is even remotely technically savvy, jailbreaking the latest firmware is very easy and takes minutes. Also, you make it sound like Apple is the only one who sells carrier locked phones. That's not true. I definitelly agree that it's a ***** practice though. - kreatre2007, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1What would be great is if all the wireless carriers would just get on the same kind of network so that consumers can choose their carrier without worrying about whether or not their phone will work. Doing that would increase competition and give the carriers greater incentives to improve their networks and customer service or, risk losing their customers to another carrier.
- youareretarded, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1So what if my phone is already at 2.2?
- rtz549, on 01/03/2009, -1/+2Now make the G1 3G work on AT&T!
- xfile087, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1Neither does a PAYG iPhone :P Sure sure if you want browsing after first 12 months you have to pay but your not forced to pay a penny and you still get the phone part!
- xfile087, on 01/04/2009, -1/+2Yes I quite enjoy them long calls on my iPod touch.
- haydenk, on 01/03/2009, -2/+3There's other mobile data device manufacturers to choose from other than Apple so there is no wrong here. Apple has just devised a more extreme way of locking their device to 1 provider. The iPhone 3G activation stuff was at the request of AT&T if I recall because it was too easy for people to buy and take their business elsewhere. The competition is still there though, Apple not AT&T is not stopping you from buying a blackberry, a sidekick or the G1.
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1Me?
I'm not... - McNash, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1at least it doesn't force you to buy a data plan and charge you every month.
- FuZi0nDET, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1Directions say you need to use I-Tunes to upgrade your phone to get to 2.2 because unlock only works with the newest baseband. Some one posted the link up above
- DTJunkie07, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1with this unlock can i get the phone from at&t and not have to use the data plan?
- lovemorgul, on 01/03/2009, -6/+7It should eventually be unlocked but first you must get past the activation obstacle.....
- peestandingup, on 01/03/2009, -2/+2My own people usually suck that way, so yeah.
- mrBitch, on 01/04/2009, -1/+1RE: " I can now unlock my iPhone 3G pretty easily but i still cant find an easy way to unlock my old nokia 6280 without paying. Its kind of frustrating."
Wow, crazy. The Nokia is locked down and iPhone is easy to unlock?
BTW, These are the guys that did it :
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ - youareretarded, on 01/03/2009, -1/+1Does anyone know if I can do this without having itunes installed (XP)?
- DuMbGuM, on 01/03/2009, -2/+2Now watch your own people turn on you and Digg you down.. lol.
- RossCraig, on 01/04/2009, -0/+0How are you making calls on your Touch?
I use the grandialer app to call my cell phone, only because I can't get my rumour phone to make a call using m.grandcentral - MarkyBear, on 01/03/2009, -1/+0Actually it is an advantage to have both types of networks. As long as all of Asia is CDMA and all of Europe is GSM there will be significant numbers and models of phones made for both types of networks. The US is a rare place to have this choice of technology and enjoy using any phone the world produces. Plus, we already have multiple carrier choices on each type of network.
- McNash, on 01/03/2009, -2/+1I don't understand why people can't just buy an iPod touch, its the same thing.
- peestandingup, on 01/03/2009, -7/+6I agree. I'm a Mac user for over 10 years, but IMO Apple shouldn't be allowed to do some of the ***** they're pulling.
- thebesian, on 01/03/2009, -2/+1I have no regular way to get a iphone 3G in China now, although there are so many people like it.
- RossCraig, on 01/04/2009, -1/+0Why do you want to unlock the Iphone? When it is unlocked can you still use the Internet?
- dharasick, on 01/03/2009, -4/+2"An unlocked iPhone 3G is pretty useless in the U.S. You're still stuck paying for an AT&T contract, and T-Mobile's 3G network uses a different frequency here, which the iPhone can't access. And an iPhone can't use Verizon (VZ) or Sprint (S), unlocked or not."
For all the people in America, the majority of iPhone owners, and the place that attracts the most digg users, they can't use 3G. Got it? Would you like me to get excited about all the China people who now can use a different carrier? What the crap, seriously. -
