- gettarat, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1Berkeley already does that with some classes and it's not private, anyone can subscribe through iTunes.
http://texashighschool.org/ - jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1very cool use of podcasts, I hope more schools follow suit.

- caffinedrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sdenike..no need to bring sparty into this...
well done UM - awesinine, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0seriously though if they did this at cal poly you still would be able to understand what the professor is trying to say through their thick foreign accent. still, this should be mandatory of professors... sort of like "this conversation will be monitored for quality service assurance" for professors...
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope the rest of the school follows suit, my chem lecture was downright painful today.
- NickD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what the deal between Apple and University of Michigan is. Could this be the reason Apple has entered the podcasting arena? Imagine this times 1000. iTunes can become the main mechanism to get specialized content to individual organizations. They could have done this with iPodder with customized OPML in the directory or pre-subscribed feeds, but with the Apple and iTunes name behind you, I guess there is more credibility.
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not a bad use of podcasts, but I don't see why they'd require the students to go through iTunes when the university obviously would have enough resourses to put out their own RSS feeds.
A couple years ago I was taking a quantum mechanics course at UCSD and the professor/TA took a video of every lecture (and scan of every slide) and had it posted online within an hour (4 50min lectures + 2 1hr TA discussions per week). Although sometimes it was tough to hear questions, it was very helpful. By the end of the quarter over 2000 mins of streaming video were available. I wish more classes were done like this, hopefully in the future with decreasing bandwith and storage classes it may be possible. - MWWLSE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Many of my classes at the London School of Economics - LSE had realmedia audio files available from lectures, in addition to online whiteboard notes. It was definitely helpful because you could concentrate on what was being said and not on writing down every inane detail; more schools should do this.

haha
i'm glad to see at least someone putting podcasts to good educational use - brettotte1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UNL (univ of NE - Lincoln) gave iPods to freshman the last 2 years.
- awesinine, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0I need to edit my above comment to read "wouldn't". ugggg.
- .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** hell Apple, bring a ***** itunes store to Australia.
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds neat!

Did they have some kind of super computer set up to do the compression? It takes me like 2-3 times the length of a video clip to compress it at ***** quality MPEG 2 120 minute encode. How did he pull this off? - eigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just the dentist school? how many dentists come from the college of ls 'ngay. they need to podcast the engineering lectures.
- robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this is a great idea. I see this catching like wildfire to universities all over the place.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0nice idea, but it should be a free service (at least for students)
- dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was going to podcast my statistics lectures, then I realized the subscription numbers would be more depressing than the marks...
We do a podcast at our university though, pretty fun stuff. - daving31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go blue! i'll be graduating this april with my BA in economics.....
my dentist went to umich...weird???
happy hours are fun...! - Tonyisbad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy ***** that is ***** awesome, if they only had this last year before i graduated, my god if they had this back when i was a freshmen it wouldn't of been on the 5 year plan. actually i take that back, graduating college in 4 years is like leaving the bar before 10.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope the rest of the school does the same, that'd be handy for my polisci class...
- DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Boo Michigan, Michigan State is better. But anyways thats pretty awesome. I just wonder when they will start giving iPods to new students like Duke did..."
Gimme a *****' break... I got my M.A. from MSU, and I liked it there, but better than U of M? I kinda doubt it. There were some SERIOUS problems with my program, and lots of faculty who were about as lazy and uniterested in teaching as anywhere I've been.
Anyway, glad to hear podcasting is taking off for lectures, I had to do my own recordings as a undergrad and grad student, and it was a pain in the ass. As far as faculty who can't speak english goes, I think that universities should have to provide translators for those particular classes, or the faculty should have to deliver you concise and in depth notes. Either way, there is no reason that people who don't speak english well shouldn't teach, but there definitely need to be some concessions made to help ensure students are getting what they pay for out of classes. - Jerryskid02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GO BUCKS!!! OH-IO!!! OH-IO!!!
- gauntalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go Blue! w00t, 3rd Year Computer Science Engineering, really don't care about this story at all, just saw my school so I had to raise the flag :-D
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish Texas Tech would do this, they already have a relationship with Apple for various stuff so they already have the contacts.
- DP26UMW, on 12/29/2007, -0/+0That sounds interesting. Could help, but there is nothing like a live lecture from a professor in front of you.
GO BLUE!!! -DP - gModo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hell yea id rather be assigned to listen to a 3 hour podcast about art history in the comfort of my room instead of joining to class and wanting to schoot myself
- gModo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0opps going*
- trek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey all.... not only did I post the news item, I'm also the main developer
(on the UM side). I know, I know, shameless self promotion.
The most interesting thing about this project is that it arose from an initial student request for video captures of every lecture. We ran a bunch of pilots and it turned out nobody was downloading video and the people who were didn't use it.
At first I was attending all of these classes to video record them (ZZzzzZZZzzzzz) and then editing in Final Cut. Ick.
Now the whole thing is automated using some Automator workflows (and custom actions). From recording, processing, and posting the time-to-live is 4 minutes and the whole system takes about 15 mins a week of maintenance.
answers to some questions!
"I hope the rest of the school does the same, that'd be handy for my polisci class..."
"just the dentist school? how many dentists come from the college of ls 'ngay. they need to podcast the engineering lectures."
---For now, it's just the dental school. We would love to bring it University wide... but
there are a lot of politics that play in. Feel free to message me and we can chat about it :p
"nice idea, but it should be a free service (at least for students)"
---It's 100% free for students
"Not a bad use of podcasts, but I don't see why they'd require the students to go through iTunes when the university obviously would have enough resources to put out their own RSS feeds."
--- the MAJOR issue in getting faculty permission was protecting their IP rights. During several pilot phases of the project (pre iTMS) they were plain old RSS feeds... security by obscurity.
"hah, I should read my campus paper instead of finding out about my school via digg. My school is great."
--- It wasn't in the Daily, because Daily writers are hacks. ;)
"I bet the main developer is really hot, single, and looking"
--- Yes, actually he is! - dementia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go Blue!
