This is cool, and might even have some practical applications, but is hardly the "future" of anything.

- Emera, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Applications like this are a stepping stone to future technologies. Obviously this app doesn't have a lot of practical use, but that doesn't mean it's not paving the way for future developments in software. The iPhone is just one avenue for AR applications. It may not be perfect, but its ubiquity alone is reason to pursue it as a platform, and once these kinds of technologies take off it will open the door for more advanced devices. Better technologies will only come about as a direct result of consumer interest in AR applications.
A simple example of such a technology, would be a pair of sunglasses that can map your GPS information on the road in front of you as you drive/walk -- although something with less potential for hazard might make more sense.
It's easy for people to look at the current state of something, and say it's *****, but that's just not how I operate. I'm much more interested in looking at the potential of a technology, than harping on it's flaws.
