"It's going to get fingerprints all over the screen"
"The screen will get scratched up"
"That sucks, I just bought a 5G"
"FAKE!"
"Apple's the best, anything they do is cool, this is better than butter"
"Apple suxors, you're all a bunch of fanboys, quit talking about iPods" - e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I doubt this will happen any time soon. If you seriously analyze Apple's ipod release schedules of the particular models, they never release a new model until the preceding model has been on the market for at least a year. That said, they could jump the gun on their current video iPod but they would risk getting tons of people upset, and they know it. The current iPod has been the highest selling model, they wouldn't shove it off the market just yet.
- double0shithead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Alex totally called this on diggnation, didn't he?
- lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Congrats, Apple! You have invented... a PDA.
If this is true, stop buying Ipods. Sure the storage is great, but if you're going to have a full touchscreen, buy a Palm or PocketPC. You can do more with them for the same cost or less. Interface? Well if it's all software, there are plenty of Ipod emulated players out there already. - wireplay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Confirmed rumblings? Uh, does that smell like ***** to anyone else?
- DJNewStyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2proper respect -> propers -> props

I hate when people dumb down slang further. - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If this is true, I am going to scream at Apple, throw my current iPod in their faces, steal some money, and then buy one of these things.
- runninmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Wow. I wonder how much money Mac cultists have spent buying and re-buying the iPod every time they bait-and-switch their faithful consumers with the next new gee-whiz upgrade?"
Um so far Ive spent $250 for my mini, 350 for my iPod photo and $250 for my nano so ~850, but that doesn't include accessories... wow i spend way to much on this stuff. - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"They simply turn the iPod 90 degrees and make the screen longer, while using the clickwheel that is the size of the nano instead of it's current size."
that'd be ideal. they could even extend on that and have rotation detection - CovardeAnonimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 felchdonkey, you forgot:
"I hoppe it works with firewire!" - manoftheisland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok ThinkSecret was technically right about the "Video iPod" thing. Apple did not come out with a specific "video" iPod it was just another iPod... im looking forward (whether its this year or later on) to when they do release an iPod ment for Video.
- accidental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blah. I am still going to get the 30g video one here in a few weeks. Touchscreen is notorious for issues. I remember getting a new IPAQ a few years ago and the damn screen crapped out like 2 weeks after use. I'd prefer the mechanical wheel to an on screen one.
- Essefgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everybody predicted a "true" video iPod once the 5g was finally unveiled. It's only a matter of time before it's released.
- shooby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was going to go the apple store today to buy a 5th gen iPod, but maybe I can wait till April 1
- lysdexic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A digial wheel would be a disaster.
No tactile feel = bad - roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if its a digital click wheel, aren't you gonna get scratch circles on the display?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Use your ***** brains. Read a damn book."
books dont play music dumbass. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ThinkSecret's rather hit or miss (well, since the lawsuit). Remember, these guys were the ONLY rumor site saying the Video iPod wasn't going to happen last year.
Moreover, the newest iPod is a brand new form factor, and it's been out, what, a few months? And they've just sold 3.9 million of them? There is no demand for this product really (well, yes, there is a demand - mostly from people that would never buy a video iPod anyway and are much more likely to pick up the newest Creative Zen - but for 8 out of 10 people looking at video iPods specifically right now, they're going to be more than happy with a 2.5" screen and three hours of video battery life), and Apple knows that the current iPods are going to keep selling at an accelerated rate for some time to come (especially considering the rate at which they're adding TV shows to the iTMS - I saw Showtime added some shows to the lineup). Once sales start hitting a stall in a few months, they're going to consider launching this product, but probably not a moment sooner.
That's not to say this product doesn't exist - it wouldn't surprise me in the least. But until their sales slow down, Apple has no compelling reason to release it and drive sales back up. - dixonr315, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the dumbest quote of all time
"This is going to piss me off. Probably why I haven't bought an Apple computer... something new and better (though never cheaper) will just come out a year later."
Hey guess what a year from now, there will be new models of Cars, Clothes, shoes, phones, people (babies ;-) ), etc. Can you please think about how stupid that comment really is before typing it. - higher750, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't believe how many people here don't understand the products they love so much.
The 5G iPod is designed to play music first and video second. It was an update to the 4G iPod and happened to include video. mainly because the chip could handle video, so why not.
From the beg. apple has called the 5G iPod exactly what it is, THE iPOD!!! An update (not an addition to) in their wildly successful iPod line.
The true video iPod, if they actually are working on this device will fill the final nitch in the iPod line up. Shuffle - extreme portability (working out). Nano - active lifestyle (subway commute). iPod - take your whole music library with you (longer flights, car trips). Video iPod - portable video (watch full length movies, likely multiple movies per charge).
I bought the 5G iPod because I wanted to listen to all my music/podcasts in the car on my commute. Every now and then I watch a video podcast or a downloaded TV show, but 90% of my usage is still centered around what makes the iPod so popular, music! - smoothoperatah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"noobs" LMFAO.
let it die kid, let it die. - GreenAlien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet it has a friggin fixed non-removable battery too (please Apple, don't).
- vancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, come on! All of you people complaining about Apple coming out with new things all the time need to calm down. It's the nature of progress, folks - Apple wouldn't be here today if it didn't keep cranking out new things like mad. Also, be happy with what you got - the 5th gen iPod *with* video is still a great device. And if you really want the 6th gen Video iPod, then eBay your 5th gen and buy the new one (iPods have great resale value).
Another thought: If you really kept up with the news and rumors on Apple and the iPod, you could have seen this "true" Video iPod coming from a mile away. The 5th gen iPod was just Apple testing the waters to see if Video on Demand was actually in demand. With the success of video on iTunes, they're rolling out the 6th gen to provide a better viewing experience. - diggthemac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will buy this and use my 4G Monochrome as usb hd.
Current battery life sucks for video, give us at least four hours! - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I notice some of you questioning the veracity of this. For those of you who don't watch Apple rumors sites (which I, to my disgrace, cannot stop doing) ThinkSecret is one of the most accurate and consistently reliable sources of info about upcoming Apple projects. Even when they appear to be wrong about something, it's usually just because Apple delays the release of something (I've seen that happen where TS predicts something that comes out at a much later date.) ThinkSecret is one or two or three rumors sites that have some real sources and they should be taken seriously. Apple's lawyers sure take them seriously.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With no real competition in the video arena, Apple is much better off capitalizing on the 5G which they claim is selling beyond expectations. Once the competition starts to make some real advances, that is when they should spring the true video ipod. Besides, the 5G has only really been out for what, 6 months?
Also if we are rubbing our grubby fingers all over the screen/click wheel what will stop it from smudging or worse yet, scratching? - ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes... i want one!!!
- higher750, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vancer:
The "video iPod" will not be 6th gen, it will be the 1st gen of a new product in the iPod line-up. Look at the product line up. The iPod mini was a very different form factor from the iPod. The nano is very different from the mini and the iPod. The "video iPod" will be completely different from the 5th gen iPod and will be considered a new product, not an update to the existing 5G iPod.
The device will likely come in significantly over the $399 top of the line iPod price point as well, not making it a replacement for the iPod. - Pocky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For anyone considering buying an iPod, I still highly recommend the 5G iPod. It is the best $300 I've ever spent. It is cooler looking than the nano (my opinion of course), and it stores my entire music collection. As soon as it was released I knew it was finally time for me to get an iPod. The selling point for me was not the video, it was the size. It is so thin. Huge improvement over the previous iPods.
As for all these people who are complaining about buying the 5G when a "real" video iPod is bound to be released. I have a hard time understanding why watching TV on a little brick is all that appealing any way. I watch TV on a big screen (which I can hook my 5G up to if I am inclined to do so). When there is a rare occasion that I actually want to watch video on my iPod's screen (airplane, bus, train, etc.), I don't see how 3.5 inches is going to be that much better than 2.5 inches, because the video will still suck. - xXRx7Xx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where would you connect the headphones?
If its in its current spot, holding the ipod while watching videos will feel awkward. If you put it on the longest side, listening to music would feel awkward. Try it with your ipod and you'll see what I'm saying - Ruudje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, i just bought an G5 30GB. This crap always happens when i buy something new ! :(
- Sabot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for giving us some really interesting news on Apple for a change. Much better than the typical ipod is now $5 cheaper marketing crap!
- vaxguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does Apple upgrade their products so often, making the older ones seem obsolete. Not that people won't be looking forward to a new iPod, but it just seems 'rushed'. Most people can't afford to fork out every year for a new iPod. Not only does this make the previous product seem inferior, but it also has a bad impact on the customers that have purchased the previous model. Keep innovating Apple, but give us some time to breathe in between.
The SNL sketch captures this extremely well =P - Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SOB apple needs to quit this *****. i just bought the damn 5G at Christmas.
- Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet they won't get a patent for this, it will go to creative after they release a rip off of it 6 months later.
- Tetsuo6995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems really cool :)
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah...now i can squint at a 3.5 inch screen
Awesome. - yoelnino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0did anyone catch the date: april 1 aka april fools!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the likelihood of a battery life of 5 minutes on the new one, I'm prefectly fine with my old 5G.
- gaius_baltar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I called this 3 years ago. It's a natural evolution of the design in order to make it a better video viewer. My 5G iPod is great but this is the design I've been waiting for. We'll wait and see.
- kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now we're going to have fingerprints on boths sides of the ipod.
- thor17usa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just when I thought I had waited long enough for the 5G ipod, Apple does something like this. Well, I am broke now, so it will be even longer before I ever get a TRUE video iPod.
- Coletrickle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"did anyone catch the date: april 1 aka april fools!"
Apple was founded on that day 30 years ago, hence the date.
If this turns out to be true, it will be bye bye nano, this sounds sweet. - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just get an iAudio A2. 4inch screen OGG and FLAC support, TV/Video record through A/V out, DivX, Xvid, MPEG4, WMV9, up to 10 hours of video, USB-OTG, Voice record, builtin stereo speakers, UMS, Radio, and it works with Linux perfectly. I doubt the iPod could pull all that off.
- nordy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think Secret confirms = oxymoron
- stenspect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The screen on the current 5G iPod is too small, and was probably no technological feat to go from 4g to 5g. Turning to touch screen is a huge step and would justify my investment in a new iPod (i just dropped a 55lb weight on it while at the gym).
- odysseus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A touchscreen doesn't have an indent. I like being able to keep my 5G in my shirt pocket and feel where the next-song button is. However, when I change volume it does look like I am rubbing my nipple.
- hadem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple pisses me off when they do ***** like this. I bought the 4G Photo iPod, then shortly after that, now iPods play video! Now all the poor bastards who bought a video iPod will be pissed because Apple is now releasing another video iPod. I think I will wait around 6 months after a new iPod is released from now on. Besides, I am waiting for the iPod with wireless capabilities.
- dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think i might have to part with my 1gen mini if this is true
- shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"
No mention of a firewire capabilites, though..."
Firewire is dead. -
