- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25azureus = ramhog.
what OSX needs is a utorrent version - Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Xtorrent is also in beta and it'll be shareware when it's released..
Transmission is great. Can't wait till the next stable release. - GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Every other app the guy makes is shareware, xtorrent will be, too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Transmission is terrible."
I wouldnt go as far as to say that it is Terrible, it just needs some work, I have friends who only use Transmission for the mere fact that they dont know how to configure Azures correctly and Transmission offers the more lighter and simpler answer to the intricate workings of Azures. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9On the changelog saying "pushed back beta expiry" should give you a clue. Once out of beta, your license is expired and nagware begins.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Transmission has always been good but a bit sparse for 'power uses' - good to see some options and other more 'intricate' (I say that loosely) things being added though still missing some 'essential' things/options.
I hate having to reboot into my hackintosh. :x - deadlierchair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Everyone wants a different kind of torrent application, no matter what the OS is. On OS X you can have Azureus if you need features or you can have something like Transmission that's simple. In Windows you can have Azureus (again!) if you need those features, otherwise why not just use the official client? My point being, Transmission isn't trying to compete with Azureus, its goal is to be a small, simple client and in that regard it succeeds.
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Xtorrent is good, but I do like how light weight Tranmission is.
My only gripe with transmission -- and the one thing that stops me from removing Azuerus -- is the fact that you cannot choose to download individual files within a torrent; it's all or nothing. As far as I could tell, this is also a problem with Xtorrent, which surprised me.
Once they fix that, I'm all in. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As of now there is no good torrent client out for OSX that's not based in java (azureus). Bitrocket might be getting close. Author got it unbanned from oink which is a feat all on itself (you should know how strict they are) and every release he fixes something else. Its still in beta and not as fast as azureus on my machine yet but it'll get there. Xtorrent is just a prettier interface to transmission, uses same core so until transmission gets it, xtorrent won't (author doesn't want to mess with it).
*sigh*, using Azureus until something comes that blows me away yet keeps my ram in place :P - yawn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9If I wanted a bloated torrent client with tons of features which slows down my complete system, then I'd use Azureus.
But if I want a simple and fast client, which runs fast and doesn't take up all of my RAM because of features I don't need (for instance the webui), then I'd use Transmission.
Believe me, I tried Azureus. But if I run it on my G4 Powerbook with 1.25G RAM, the whole system gets slow as hell. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It doesn't use libtransmission it uses libtorrent (many people seem to have that confused). Author has been working closely and politely with the oink administrators to the point that he has it working there. It still has some hiccups but they're passable so the administrators unbanned it. I'm sure he's working the kinks out of it so it works flawlessly. Check out this thread: http://www.bitrocket.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=94&st=0
Author has had some bad rep for things he's done in the past. You can read about it elsewhere since I'm not going to bother because I really think he's pulling through. This will remain freeware (unlike xtorrent) and every single update there is significant improvement. You can see the author cares about the application and the actual USE of it . Not just make it pretty, but make sure its accepted everywhere it might be used. - DarkSorrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Azureus used to use private tracker without their permission until they fixed that.
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why did he blank out those totally legal linux mirrors he are using Transmission for downloading?
- danieldaniel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ Gobd
Wrong. First of all, maybe you should read the whole thing. In this release, it does have a scheduler. I am sure more features will be added eventually. It may not be quite as good as µtorrent, but it is probably the closest we will get for Macs anytime soon. - steveohan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The first thing I noticed was that the blue, mechanical-looking icon that is seen in version 0.6 is gone. It has been replaced by a much nicer looking one. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but looks like a lever in a double-arrow shaped frame. Unique and attractive."
is this a joke??
steve. - wbgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Transmission is very close to perfect, but alas horribly broken. Until the devs fix the hammering, it will remain a novely because there are so many trackers that have banned it. Can't blame them to be honest, when Transmission is hitting them 6 times as often as other clients because it doesn't obey the rules.
Unfortunately, the devs are of the rather idealistic opinion that the brokenness provides better download speeds for their users, when in reality it justs prevents them from using Transmission on any private trackers they use. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea I was thinking the same thing. He probably never drove a car.
- MariusTh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@GeneralAntilles, Actually, as of v3(b), Inquisitor has been released as freeware
- bangmalley, on 08/30/2008, -2/+5ya, i wish there's utorrent for osx.
- websyndicate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like it because it was so light weight and did the job but I like the options on Azureus more. I wish bit rocket was more stable and wouldnt crash as much.
- OroCHU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Transmission isn't terrible, the developers' unwillingness to commit this patch -> http://transmission.m0k.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/ticket/108 is.
- jinushaun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@deadlierchair
The official BT client on Windows is broken. Please don't suggest it to anyone. I prefer BitComet on Windows and Transmission on OSX. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is exactly why I'm using XTorrent, and will probably buy a license when it's out of beta. XTorrent uses libtransmission, but Watanabe fixed the min-announce issue in his (closed) branch of the library. I have no idea whether it's slower as a result, because Transmission was widely banned and unusable before XTorrent was released, so I haven't been able to compare them.
- bigkm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the devs really want to keep it as a simple client, so its not overwhelming to set up.
I wrote and submitted the scheduler as a concept, which got later tweeked and submitted to the codebase.
the reason i wrote it was because my applescripts that i had croned to do the work would interupt movies that i was watching and it got annoying. but most of all this is why i love open source. - miyamotofreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Five features Transmission needs!
1. Selective Downloading
2. Oink! and other torrent sites supported
3. Encryption
4. RSS Support
5. Abilty to make torrents - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Dog_Paddle
The SVNs have been perfectly stable for me on an intel mac. I've had transmission running 24/7 on SVN builds for five weeks now without a single crash. Give it a go!
This is for some reason a review of a very old svn version, and that it's not yet in beta. These are simply pre release builds, and the latest version ( http://chucker.mystfans.com/opensource/transmission/Transmission-0.7-svn-r1040.dmg ) includes some nice new icons and a torrent progress display like in xtorrent.
All in all, I'd say it's now almost up to par with the shareware xtorrent. - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hot did bitrocket get oink to un-ban?
- jonshipman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Transmission really needs a way to pick better trackers. If there are multiple trackers, Transmission always seems to pick the one with 0 seeds. Azureus seems to pick a better tracker most of the time.
- OroCHU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, the devs really should commit the patch here-> http://transmission.m0k.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/ticket/108
It does not hurt speeds at all!
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/9518/transmissionregif7.png - EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Thank goodness they got rid of that horrid gear icon.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love the original design. On my macbook Transmission takes up very little real estate... I never have it maximised (maybe vertically). On Linux I use Azureus for "power-downloading" (mainly for it's file-selection ability) and I always have it maximised, note that my PC has a 22" LCD hooked up to it which runs at 1680x1050 resolution. Now this type of resolution should never be filled up like that!
- tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it was a double entendre. Gears, a cars transmission, speed etc... pretty appropriate, even if you don't like the art, which compared to most free apps out there was pretty top notch. So, if the art is hot, then you don't like the idea of the gears. Then you must also hate the new one, which is an automatic gear shift stick. So you have no idea what the ***** you're talking about.
I think both are fine incidentally, after all it's just an icon. - djKianoosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1check out this thread on the status of the uTorrent port over to mac. it looks like the uTorrent dev'r doesn't have time to continue working on the port (no criticism here, he doesn't get paid to do this anyway).
http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=985&p=3
there are also some good links to alternatives. - Gobd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Transmission in reality provides horrible download speeds due to it's library and lack of features to help speed. If my friend and I start the same torrent (as long as it's a few hundred MB), at the same time, on the exact same network 100% of the time I will win by hours if not days using either uTorrent or BitComet on Windows instead of Transmission on Mac.
- SunAlex, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0Bits on Wheels, despite the fact that it’s a 100% native client, was too slow and RAM-hungry for my taste.

http://search.ashtech.info/computers - kuwan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love Xtorrent's interface, especially the integrated searching, but after using it for a while I've noticed that the download speeds I get with it are far below what I get when using Bits on Wheels. The Bits on Wheels interface is a bit clunky, but I can download things much faster with it than I can with Xtorrent.
I started using Xtorrent because I needed a Universal client that I could use with my new Intel Mini. It appears that both Xtorrent and Transmission are based on libTransmission so I wonder if I'd see any speed differences between the two. I wonder if BitRocket, based on libTorrent, is any better?
For now I'll stick with downloading on my Quad G5 with Bits on Wheels. - KAMiKAZOW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hm, even duggmirror doesn't seem to work right (some graphics are missing ATM).
Use http://duggmirror.com/apple/Transmission_0_7_Beta_Redefining_BitTorrent_on_the_Mac/ and if you don't have any graphics there, you can use http://rapidshare.com/files/1519499/transmission-07-beta-redefining-bittorrent-on-the-mac.pdf.html - acidtrx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I found a link to BitRocket ( http://www.bitrocket.org ) while reading the article (in a comment) and I Google'd up a screen shot of it and the GUI reminds me of µTorrent.
So I guess if there was a µTorrent for the Mac OS, that would be it -- IMO. However I don't know if it's as good, on the Mac OS, as µTorrent is on Windows. - kopernikus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1edit
- bmxboy661, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i used to have bits on wheels
now i have azureus, because its universal - ru(sic), on 10/12/2007, -13/+7utorrent pwnz every single one of these wanna be torrent clients on mac... and the thing I miss from PC days is a good Usenet client... believe me, I bought Unison... and it is *****..
- dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1"Transmission on the other hand could probably be called the µTorrent of Mac OS X."
no it cant.. it's cheating just like bitcomet.. - fusioned, on 10/12/2007, -18/+9Transmission is terrible.
It is not designed right. A lot of private trackers will ban you for using it.
Stick with Azureus until someone makes something as robust as it, but not in Java. - DarkSorrow, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3Dog, i dont see any notes about xtorrent will be shareware after the beta. i looked in the blogs to see if it will be shareware, but hear nothing of it.
Can you point me to right direction? a web link that prove xtorrent will be sharewave? - Gobd, on 10/12/2007, -22/+5Transmission sounds like a typical Mac program. Looks damn good, but behind the good looks has relatively few features that it should have to be able to compete with anything. No scheduler, encryption, DHT, peer sharing, webUI, RSS downloader, NAT transversal, and more. It really is lacking enough that I don't think it should currently be called version .7, I think .5 might be more fitting considering all the features it still needs to be a full-fledged torrent client. A good torrent client is something Mac's have always been lacking.
- dotpage, on 10/12/2007, -27/+5XTORRENT has all that AND a serch feature, can't beat that..
