- daGUY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Usually lists like these are lame, but those suggestions are all actually really good. I think the first two (AppZapper functionality and auto-eject) are the most necessary (and reasonable).
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24I've a few requests:
1. ZFS file system (unlikely at best)
2. Optional maximize button functionality in system prefs for the whole system (absolutely necessary IMO)
3. Consistency...
a: All windows to be free from brushed metal.
b: the close window button has different functions in different apps, that should be addressed.
4. Full VoiP functionality in iChat 4.0, and like iTunes which went Windows and integrates with the iPod, iChat 4.0 should go Windows too, and have seemless iPhone integration. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15How about this - if you drag an application to the trash, it initiates its own uninstaller if it has one.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"For example: the Go menu offers shortcuts to locations in the Finder, such as the Applications menu - why not turn that Applications location into a dynamic menu that allows direct access to clickable application aliases? Why make me open a Finder window at all"
A little hint...drag your hard drive into the dock. Then when you click and hold (or control click, or right click with a multi button mouse) you will get a menu with the entire contents of your hard drive. - dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Sorry I meant "Better (faster, don't use the finder) FTP integration would be sweet". Right now it sucks, and is not something I enjoy using.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Not a bad list. I agree that the Apple menu could use a face lift. I don't want a clone of the Windows start menu but there's a ton of space up there. Why not put it to good use?
I just need 2 bugs fixed and I'll be happy:
-Fix the god damn SMB bug that hangs Finder randomly. So annoying. So very annoying.
-AirPort needs some improvements. I'd like to see the icon in the menu bar be more responsive. It can be frustrating to click on the airport icon and nothing happens at first causing you to click again which, of course, starts the whole process over causing you to wait even longer.
And the third thing I want, which I have confirmed is indeed in 10.5, is support for ADP BlueTooth headphones. - benlmusic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Enabling of the Cut feature in finder would be nice.
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Dude, forget about the maximize button. Everyone at AppleInsider already told you why it's a bad idea. OS X IS NOT WINDOWS.
- dcharti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Keep in mind all, I originally wrote the post with the general user audience in mind. I write for TUAW, which means I use or at least have seen a lot of the available tricks - this is more about improving the experience for everyone, from the über-1337 down to the 'oh darn, where'd the power button go again?' users. Hope that helps add some perspective.
- jgclark123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@zephc
I know that the keys are right next to each other, but, come on, Dick instead of Dock. You might want to be a little more careful with your Freudian slips/typos. - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@dmoney06:
OS X has long had FTP integration with the Finder... or do you mean with something else? - Kiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6-Fix the god damn SMB bug that hangs Finder randomly. So annoying. So very annoying.
I second. Its pretty poor that this error takes so long to happen. I understand it must be an issue to balance glitches with actual forced unmounts, but it takes a silly amount of time - pygmalion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5OS 9's apple menu never had such a (sub)menu with "all programs"...
You could customize the Apple menu items folder and app an alias to a folder where you kept your applications (provided you kep them all in the same location), but it's not something the system did for you.
Don't make it sound like OS 9 had a Start menu, it makes me shiver :) - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, but not INTO the trash - just beside it!
- TGMD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7FTP in the Mac OS X finder is somewhat crippled, it doesn't support anything but anonymous ftp.
- ViktorVaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Second that.
- cavicster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Go to System Preferences | Keyboard and Mouse | Keyboard Shortcuts and select the "All controls" radio button under Full keyboard access.
This allows you to tab between buttons and hit space on the one you want. - ViktorVaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Drag it into the space on the dock where the Trash is.
Nice tip BTW. - iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would rather see that when you click the Apple icon, as in Mac OS 9, the menu with all programs will come up. Much nicer and easier way to access programs.
- ViktorVaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Navigate "Cancel"/"OK" and similar menus with the arrow keys.
I use XP and OSX and I hate having to touch the mouse in OSX to move the pointer to the Save/Don't Save/Cancel dialog box when a couple of keystrokes gets the job done.
You can hit return to activate the highlighted button, but you can't move the highlight with the keyboard. That doesn't make any sense to me.
Oh, and click-throughs are huge, especially when multi-tasking several apps across multiple monitors. You end up clicking twice as much. - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Personally, I like the ZFS and Bittorrent ideas...
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want to tab thru, you have to enable "Full Keyboard Access" in System Preferences.
But there's kb shortcuts either way. Use return for the default control, esc to cancel; everything else is almost always Cmd(apple key)-something, for example Cmd-D is Don't Save, Cmd-W is Close Window. The menus tell you what the shoirtcuts are, like windows does. - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51. FTP in the finder is good, but why not take it a step further and add SFTP or SCP functionality?
2. I second the VoIP option in iChat. It already speaks SIP/RTP, it would be simple to add a dialpad to it and options for configuring a SIP server. XTen sucks, SJPhone sucks, and Gizmo project doesn't allow you to connect *directly* to your SIP server, but relays the call through them (which is sketchy at best)
3. I have a brilliant idea to make iChat Audio/Video much more reliable when both users are behind firewalls/NAT devices. If you're from Apple and interested, I'm the admin At juniperforum.com. BTW, no one there ever called me back when I put in my resume. :/
The article also mentions start menu type functionality. Drop your applications folder in your dock, and then right click on it (or ctrl-click, or two finger on touchpad-click). - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh, titties! Sweet tip.
I didn't know that one :) That'll help a lot. Much thanks. - DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wtf! the screenshot function in mac is far better than it is on PC, i hate when i have do do a print screen on PC and drag the sheit into a editor, i like that on my mac i just hit the button and the file is generated for me right on the fly.
But i like the idea of a appzapper lige program that would come with the new OS, cause i hate all the remaining crap that gets left behind. - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.duggmirror.com/
- bangmalley, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3very nice requests! I think Leopard should include all those requests/features.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here's my response to this as a long-time Mac user and interface geek:
• Removing apps • Here, I'm totally with you. Apple, hope you're listening.
• Don't make me eject an idle drive • This is complete nonsense. How is the OS supposed to know that you're not going to be using that drive anymore? Maybe they could have an option in the System Prefs to unmount certain types of media after a certain period of inactivity if there is enough demand, but this should never be any kind of default behavior.
• Multi-disk spanning • Apparently, Leopard's backup solution is much more savvy about backing up to multiple optical discs, and keeping track of them with Time Machine. Not sure how elegant this can be made to be, but there is supposed to be progress in this direction.
• Learn some things from the Windows Start button • How about YOU learn some things about the Dock, and making your own shortcuts, organized exactly how you want them. I have a folder in the Dock for applications, organized into categories, with links to all my apps in the various categories. I have another folder with links to a brief list of apps and documents I use on a regular basis. The point is, you are free to make an organized launcher suited to your needs using the Dock; no need for yet another menu organized by the OS vendor.
• NTFS friendliness • Wouldn't that be nice...
• Polish integration • Sounds like sub-optimal behavior. Should be fixed. Report anything like this to http://www.apple.com/feedback
• Make screenshot process more obvious • Hmm, I would have to agree that it is quite hard to discover this functionality on your own. Maybe they could add an option for Screenshots to the Apple menu, showing the keyboard shortcut.
• Click-through • I would rather you have to bring the app into focus before being able to use its buttons. I have a habit of clicking on random visible parts of app windows to bring them into focus, so it sucks when this click activates some control on the hidden app without realizing it. With the window widgets, it's not really an issue that they allow click-through, as they're a sufficiently small target, colored brightly when rolled over, that I've never clicked them by mistake. I guess the visual feedback with the rollover goes a long way towards eliminating confusion though.
• Video Tutorial • Good idea. Apple had something like this back with MacOS 8, no idea why they got rid of than snazzy demo tutorial. I seem to remember the help system being a lot more visually helpful.
• Home on iPod • Isn't that supposed to be in Leopard? I don't really care, as I would never trust my home directory to a fragile hard drive in a small portable device, just begging to be dropped or stuck in the washer along with all my crucial files.
All in all, a few good requests, a few 'meh - whatever' ones, and a few unlikely ones. I have to emphasize that feedback form on Apple's site though. If you state your case well, there's a good chance they'll implement your suggestion. - siMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I use XP and OSX and I hate having to touch the mouse in OSX to move the pointer to the Save/Don't Save/Cancel dialog box when a couple of keystrokes gets the job done."
You don't have to touch the mouse; use Enter to accept the default button, Esc for cancel, and Cmd+(first letter of button) for anything else, eg. Cmd-D for 'Don't Save'. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A tabbed finder would be great, and some non brushed metal window options.I dont want to open multiple finder windows, when i can have tabs, and just work in 1 window.
- warragul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@willynilly
While you are at it, why not ask for the need to close every open window before you can quit the application? Then OSX will be even more like Windows and you won't have to change, just the OS (and everyone else using it) will.
The things you are asking for aren't improvements. They are simply compliance with Windows behaviour. - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Might wanna try that Dick thingy at the bottom of the screen. And if you have to get to your apps folder quickly, command-shift-A in Finder
Otherwise, try this: http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/fruitmenu - MBX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funky, i use shapeshifter. but none of the themes are like the aperture hud's.
i like the stomp (black menu) a lot though. very slick, minimal metal look with transparent menu and rounded selection. - warragul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an update of the "put your HD in the Apple Menu" trick of MacOS 8 fame. I wonder if it causes the same massive delays in starting up as the old trick did... Must try it.
OOOH... it works! And no side-effects so far. Nice tip! Love it! - emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not having autoeject does make for a few laughs when mac users who don't know windows freak out when you reach for their thumb drive and pull it out without "safely removing" the device. A lot of my mac-only buddies just don't get that windows doesn't work that way.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can actually change the 'poof' graphic to something more sharp. I had one that looked like the warp effect in Star Trek TNG, it was pretty snazzy. Looks like resexcellence.com is still down, so the main resource for replacement poofs is unavailable at the moment... Hopefully, that will be back up soon.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2While you're at it, forget about the window close widget as well. That functionality is specified by the application developer, as it should be. If you disagree with the way an app you use behaves with regard to the close button, state your case to the app developer.
- pyrates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@WiseWeasel
So you're against even including an on/off button? What would be so bad about adding one to OS X that would effect your use of OS X anyways? None at all. So why are you against it? - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2shapeshifter supports themes (2 i know of: ruler and glass) that are transparent. shapeshifter is a haxie available from http:://www.unsanity.com, and allows for system themes as well as icon, sound, and pointer themes. been using it because i got reeeeeeaaaaaaaaalllllllyyyyyy tired of brushed metal.
EDIT: sry, i misread the comment, but it's still a cool app. - mintshows, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3FTP & SFTP integration into the finder in the same vein as Gnome & KDE support would be awesome. Example, I can launch QUANTA, then open any files on my sftp server, then save them as if they were local files.
In Finder, I can only read, not write. - MBX1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3the ui should be like the semi-transparent overlay when you go into quicktime fullscreen or these semi-transparent hud's in aperture. i love that style. it should be all like that. the new feature quicklook has that style too.
- edge001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i know this is trivial, but i have always hated the look of the cartoony smoke when you remove an alias from the dock or delete somethings by dragging them to the desktop. most of osx skins/interface is so detailed and sharp - then you drag a perfect glassy icon out of the dock and it might as well have a paper clip come out and fold it into a paper airplane...
- DooDooFace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does this mean "requests that are unlikely to be implemented" or "unlikely to be requested."
Either way, some of these ideas don't seem too farfetched as possible improvements in Leopard. Obviously they're always looking to make minor changes like these to streamline the OS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What happened to the excitment/speculation over Bittorrent technology incorporated into iTunes, now thats somehting I'd like to see in Leopard. I also think they should work on bootcamp and instead of making it a partition software make it where you could run Windows apps in OSX natively. I know these are all rumors at the moment but its ok to dream.
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with UKeTommyV
WiseWeasel... hows fascism working out for you? - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The mouse acceleration is so much better in MacOS X than in Windows, it's not even funny. It makes great sense to move the cursor further if you move the mouse faster, and move it precisely when you move the mouse slowly. This allows you to easily jump across the screen with a quick movement, while still being able to do precision graphic work if you move it slowly. The Windows algorithm actually makes the cursor skip pixels when you turn up the speed, making it impossible to do any graphic work, or it's just too slow, and you can't flick it across the screen. I'd say get used to it...
- ViktorVaughn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thank ya'll so much. I had no idea.
Still, I'd prefer arrow keys to tab/shift+tab. - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My unlikely request...
The -3 option for /usr/bin/cal
I usually have a ssh session open to an OS X machine and find the unix cal utility handy. However, the -3 option is missing in OS X so I had to download the linuxutil source from kernel.org and then build the linux version of cal. Somewhat surprisingly it works. - alphamerik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Auto-eject enabled by default, would be very very dumb.
Auto-sync? Absolutely.
Auto-unmount? Never. Configurable maybe, but not enabled by default. - ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How about keyboard shortcuts for dialog boxes and things like that. Having to click a button as you can't tab to it or press a key to click it. I have had my MacBook four months now and whle the "out the box" integration is neat, its no where near as user friendly as Windows.
