Noise - kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I find iStumbler extremely helpful for finding unsecured WiFi networks when I'm out and about :)
- 03RubinM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just downloaded and am using Noise. It's a little bit strange. Kind of like listening to TV static through your headphones. I can see how it could drown out distractions, but it might also drown out my train of thought.
Hopefully there are no satanic messages buried in the static. I'll update more later after I kill my family. - aDub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7iAlertU is an awesome app for Apple notebooks... the "CHIRP CHIRP" and motion sensitivity with photo snapshot has caught me showing this app to friends more than anything... my advice is to never let your notebook out of sight in public.
- VeganBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What about ShadowBook? ... and iAlertU?
- mstanisl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From bugmenot: vEmpire/vEmpire to download Stoplight
- MjrParanoid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yes..... windows
- clackerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it is hard to improve on the two finger right click and scroll-in-any-direction apple track pad. quicksilver and virtue desktops will change your life. i have used macs for a while, and while the windows full screen is cool in a lot of ways, i think switchers should keep an open mind to how apple's maximize works. apple's implementation of "maximize" is pretty slick, and is actually better for small screens. you get a window with all the pertinent info showing and still have access to the desktop underneath. i have a hard time believing that just because windows does it that way everyone should.
just my 2 cents - pyry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They could always improve on it by having the trackpad respond to three and four finger input, so then I can give it the shocker if need be. ;P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3put up or shut up.
- skidogallard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Personally I think the best app for Mac notebook users is Undercover from Orbicule.
http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/ - r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+260 diggs and it's going slow as hell, http://www.duggmirror.com/
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Why would anyone want to change the scroll behaviour of the trackpad!?
It is way cooler to use two-finger-scrolling than to use oldschool pc scroll-on-the-side .. - rockchops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A very nice selection of apps that I haven't tried yet. My primary machine has been my 12" powerbook ever since they released it. This was my first mac ever too. I can't say that I could find each of these top ten apps useful though as I have become quite accustomed to the nuances of the mac laptop that this apps attempt to "fix". They see like they would be great for a recent mac convert, but I tend to do most of my activity through the command line anyway.
Oh and I LOVE the mac trackpad just the way it is. It's my personal favorite feature of the powerbook. - pyry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know, I totally love the battery life. It's fun to sit there for four hours in a café or something and watch everyone freak out over outlets.
- mllr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As an Apple n00b this list is awesome, thanks!
- Grimgrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quicksilver is something everyone should have. Laptop or desktop.
Sidetrack (as has been mentioned) is useless on a MacBook or MacBook Pro. You can scroll any window (I think) with two fingers now. Very easy and no extra software required. - djepik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sidetrack seriously... use two fingers to scroll buddy. Two fingers to pan and scroll over the whole track pad. Oh and there is a setting somewhere where you move the cursor to any of the four corners and your mac will automatically do something that you can specify. And BTW when did I sacrifice power and efficiency? Why am I the only one NOT having my laptop plugged in when I do work at school (12" powerbook).
- agrahimi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone know of something like noise for windows?
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"They could always improve on it by having the trackpad respond to three and four finger input, so then I can give it the shocker if need be. ;P"
Unfortunally I think that is a hardware limit :P - Portezbie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah this isnt a great list there are a ton fo great mac programs that noone knows about and these arent them
- Badfysh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ bmeckel
For Sidetrack, run the installer again and select uninstall. For Sidenote, go to activity monitor in your utilities folder, highlight Sidenote and then click the stop sign, then drag the app to the trash.
HTH - Spampy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm a fan of this list, as it actually has apps that interest me and that I plan to use, like stoplight and menufela. I'd venture to say that this has been the best top 10 list of mac apps I've seen so far.
- daGUY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Stoplight is fantastic! I've been wanting something like that for ages. FYI, you have to be a registered user on the InsanelyMac forums in order to download.
- DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3expose requires you to use the mouse to select a window. with virtue desktops I can switch workspaces and applications from the keyboard much faster and without as much repetitive motion
plus, the behavior is so close to what I've used on Linux, solaris and BSD for years that I can go back and forth between all my systems with the same keyboard commands and not worry about it.
expose is great, but it's not a silver bullet. - crichols82, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Quicksilver has changed the way I use my mac; It enhances productivity and everyday I find a new use for it.
- DjOverEZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How 'bout a girlfriend...
- mydave, on 07/25/2008, -0/+0it's cooler to use two-finger-scrolling than to use oldschool pc scroll-on-the-side.

... or for a Hackintosh laptop user, like me. - lindsi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People are still using old PB's and iBooks that don't have two-finger scrolling functionality, though. Sidetrack could be good for them...
- talldean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stoplight seems to kill Quicksilver on my iBook.
- miken32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What about the people with one finger?
- icebrand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1See this is why I like these lists. I mean the lists themselves are usually crap, but if they get on the front page commenters usually point out the good apps that they completely missed.
Also, stoplight kicks ass. The one program on the list that really is worth the download. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree. This is the only thing stopping me from using SideTrack. I emailed the dev and said that he couldn't do the two-finger scrolling for legal reasons.
- erictheninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Agreed. Most of the top 10 apps are not laptop-centric. In fact, Sidetrack is the only laptop specific application on the list and you don't need it if you have a trackpad that handles 2 finger scrolling. 2 finger scrolling is faster than any scrolling area on the trackpad I've run across.
- heinous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@trylleklovn: My 1.25 Ghz powerbook doesn't have native two-finger scrolling support. Not that I wish it does... I hate the Apple trackpad. The posture I was forced to take on when I used it (I am very tall) caused my shoulder such grief (pinched nerve) that I had to undergo physical therapy. I think I'll stick to my Wacom now.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Why....?
- lindsi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can you back that up? I'm sure everyone would appreciate it...
(I'm not doubting you... just looking for a little reinforcement. And even better programs, of course.) - npulido, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1AJAX + Mac Apps List = Best Top 10 evar!!!
http://macnewsonline.com/wp/the-ultimate-mac-apps-list/ - MjrParanoid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Love seeing a big list that has a whole lotta updates so that a mac can creep even closer to being windows.
But really, good list. Now if we can just get someone to buy a mac. - ThePottsDome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You get a Cow Bell !
- bmeckel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2agreed, iStumbler is great, but menufela has made me lose ALL of my menubar icons! can anyone help me uninstall that and sidetrack. They won't delete because they are "in use" and they are prefrences. PLEASE HELP, I NEED MY COMPUTER BACK!!!
- HawkW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Thanks for the list!
- dan00b, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Worst…apps…ever
Sidetrack: Downgrade the touchpad so it doesn't accept normal input anymore, but only like a windoze trackpad, on the sides. Similarly, I'm developing a program that disables the scroll wheel on PC mice
Menufela: auto-hides the Menu Bar. Just so you can get that irritating-as-***** effect at both the top AND bottom of screen. Courtesy of Microsoft's GUI development team.
Letterbox: because you are scared of Thunderbird and get ridiculously long emails that need to be viewed in a vertical pane
Virtual Desktops: so you can chew up RAM without a noticeable improvement in usability. Expose replacement!!1!
Sidenote: Now you can get the irritating-as-***** effect not only at the top and bottom, but at the side. Great as an irritant as you try to get work done and use features of the program at the side of the screen. Replaces the handy stickies widget that you already have as part of the Dashboard, while less handy :D
The other two seem to be handy though… - netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3#1: WINE, you mean.
- theotherme, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6He's right. With boot camp and such, Windows is a must have tool on the go. Don't know about #1 though.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4#1: Windows
