- addrake, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20There is no question the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field is the greatest tech innovation of any company of all time.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24Wait. Moving to chips used by the vast majority of the Personal Computing world is 'innovation'?
- greatcaffeine, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Uh huh.
1. Yes, they do look fancy... I guess beige towers look cool though.
2. Accessories like what, the iSight that comes standard with my MacBook Pro?
3. Microsoft's openness about Vista has made it look like complete *****. WinFS seems kinda cool, too bad they scrapped it and subsequently let everyone down.
4. I pride looks AND function. What is functional about spyware, viruses, and a bloated registry?
5. When products are consistently good, there is a good reason for people to be excited about them. When Microsoft consistently disappoints customers with flawed operating systems, why would you expect people to have the same enthusiasm as Apple users?
6. iPod hype? Wouldn't that have died out after five years? iPods are still selling more and more, they aren't gonna die off just yet.
7. Even if you find the four button Mighty Mouse with its innovative scroll ball to be too much, you can still plug in a regular old USB mouse and it'll work fine.
8. What horrible search function? You mean Spotlight, which Microsoft is attempting to rip off in Vista?
9. Hype, yes... because Vista has none of its own.
10. I think that was the only valid point you made. Good job. - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Show us on the doll where the Mac touched you!!
(Clerks...for those not in the know...) - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -19/+291. Fancy paint jobs (Brushed silver and white)
yeah, and they look nice
2. Overpriced "accessories" that should come standard.
like what?
3. Secrecy to an absurd level
this is not a bad thing.. when microsoft misses a deadline, everybody knows about it. if apple missed a deadline on a particular product, we might not even know. it helps their image big time.
4. Cult like devotion from fanboys who pride looks over function
wrong, sounds like you haven't used a mac since os 9
5. Pavlov effect on yuppie and teen buyers
see above
6. Flawed business model that will collapse once Ipod hype wanes
possibly, unlikely though
7. Unusable mouse
wrong
8. Horrible search function
wrong (have you even used os x? really)
9. Hype Hype Hype
yeah, but that's not exactly apple's doing
10. Knee-jerk suing against bloggers.
yeah that is true - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Press Alt-F4
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20So...Dual booting, which many people have done for aeons, is innovation?
- iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"That's not the idea. The idea is that Bootcamp allows Mac OS and Windows to co-exist on the same platform (Apple hardware). None of the Linux bootloaders are capable of accomplishing that task (short of some hacks that I don't recommend using)"
Are you saying the closed proprietary platform that didn't allow it to be done without hacks was the "innovation"? - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Yeah, made by slaves that live at work in China (but who cares because it's China, right?)."
I guarantee you that I can find 100 things in your home that were made in China. - gizmo490, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Is it as innovative as say... being able to run Linux and windows on the same machine? I am not saying boot camp isn't cool but I wouldn't call it innovative.
Edit: Seems like this was sort of posted already. I hate being the nth person to say the same thing. - nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Why dos it never occur to anyone that they are being dugg down for being a total *****?
People don't want to browse flame wars, they want to discuss the article. If you start off by making fun of Apple, you are inciting a flame war and you deserve to get dugg down. There is no conspiracy of drooling fanboys digging you down. It's anyone who isn't an ***** like yourself.
If you hate apple, uncheck it in your preferences. If you don't you are forcing yourself to view apple news just so you can bitch about it. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Easy, go to your settings and click "Add/Remove Topics." You won't have to see any more Apple stories.
Just like all I have to do is click "Block/Report this User" and I won't have to hear any more of your whining. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Not a very good list. All very obvious stuff and the expiations are vague at best.
Here's Apple's real innovations:
5) Dropping legacy crap. Apple was one of the first companies to step up and say it's OK to ditch old hardware/software. This was actually an unheard of idea when Apple first start doing it. At that time PC's were basically souped up versions of the original IBM PC. ISA slot, floppy drive and all.
4) Moving away from C++: Apple was very smart to embrace Objective C as their primary language for developers. I know Objective C has some critics but it's still better than C++ and is doing a good job standing the test of time. It was a big risk for Apple to embrace a relatively unused language for their new platform when the rest of the industry was knee deep in C++
3) Embracing open source: It was very controversial when Apple first started using OSS code in OSX. They were one of the first major companies to go out on a limb and support OSS. Now you see giant companies like IBM, Oracle, Sun, etc supporting OSS.
2) Accepting competition as a market reality: BootCamp. Intel. iTunes on Windows. Apple understands that predatory behavior only alienates customers. It's better to face the reality of competition than to fight it.
1) UNIX for the masses - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8A product doesn't have to be a success to be innovative.
Take the DeLorean for example. Certainly an innovation. Successful? I'd say not :/ - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -17/+23Nothing you have said really relates to this article or contributes anything worthwhile here. Hell, most of your "points" are BS. I hate overzealous fanboys as much as the next guy, but take the flames somewhere else.
- texnofobix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What hacks are you talking about? Windows and Linux boot up fine for me. And I can always use VMware which is free if I want Linux in a virualization mode.
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Do you guys REALLY think there is this huge group of apple users that specifically digg down your comments JUST because they are against Apple? You REALLY don't think there is any way at all that every digger that sees your comments diggs them down simply because they are stupid, inaccurate, and offtopic regardless of what operating system they use? You guys are pretty ***** up, you always say stupid crap then rationalize that the reason no one wants to read your textual diarrhea is because of "fanboys" and "bias" or some huge pro-apple conspiracy (you know, the same one that is secretly training Apple users to be satisfied with the products they buy.)
- iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I was using *nix and Windows years before bootcamp came out.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4uownedge,
To be honest, I despise the "Mighty Mouse". IMO, a total pain in the ass to use. Every Mac I have ever owned, I have thrown out Apple's mouse and gotten a multi-button trackball. They've worked (including right-click) since at least Mac OS 8 - TimothyStickles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Apple's biggest innovation: Geek Chic
Their greatest asset has been the idea of turning technology into a fashion statement. It was truly a stroke of genius and what sets them apart from all other tech companies.
Apple is a testament to the power of brand and marketing. That will be their legacy. - nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@zybych:
tell application "QuickTime Player"
present front movie scale screen
end tell
Quicksilver calls that up quite nicely. - pero69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Ability to run windows is its Innovation, that tell you anything mac boys?"
Yep.. tells me that as a network admin for a school district I don't have to carry around 2 laptops from building to building anymore. Goodbye Latitude D600 - you've been a good friend... - bsokol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I think the innovation here was how smoothly it worked. Check a box in Xcode, recompile and there is a very high likelihood that your app will run unchanged on two hardware architectures. (This assumes you were using Xcode and following Apple's other guidelines that were known for several years). The innovation is the software magic that makes this possible.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Do you guys REALLY think there is this huge group of apple users that specifically digg down your comments JUST because they are against Apple? You REALLY don't think there is any way at all that every digger that sees your comments diggs them down simply because they are stupid, inaccurate, and offtopic regardless of what operating system they use?"
Baloney!
They do it in every topic about Apple where a poster doest say somthing in total support of that company.
Hiding behind that "Its adding nothing to the topic" line is dishonest at best. Just an excuse to censor less than postive comments.
Go to a random Apple topic, and try it, and see how high your score is in 10 minutes. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I don't think you haters understand what innovation is. This list was composed of Apple innovations from the past and present. Quicktime preceded Media Player and it jump started the idea of streaming video on the web.
When it first came out, it definitely was innovative. - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'm guessing it's because Apple has a unique operating system, with hardware that's more interesting than the ordinary computer. To most people Dell is just another computer company with the same stuff as everyone else.
Also... you seem to be very frustrated about Apple. Has a Mac hurt your feelings in the past? - cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I defy you to find an MP3 player not made in a "sweatshop" of sorts.
- teddyrux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I enjoyed how it was written that the iPod was 'one' of Apple's biggest successes ever. Way to be on the safe side when you have no idea what you're talking about.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If I was choosing best laptop ever made by Apple, my vote would be for the 500MHz G3 Pismo. Pull your CD/DVD tray and add a second battery. First laptop with FireWire (sorta, the 400MHz Pismo had it too). I think it came out in 1998? You can still load 10.4 on it. It won't run for crap, but you can do it. Sleek looking too and didn't run so hot you could fry an egg on it.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Like the old versions of NT that supported several different architectures, or perhaps linux which does so now? Sorry.
Most of the article was surprisingly good though. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No Sky, it's just you. The "Mac is twice as expensive argument" is old and no longer valid. Macs are more expensive, so what? You typically get what you pay for. Go back to whining about one-button mice. Damn, that's gone too.
- nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You are lying.
Besides, if that were true, why not attribute it to Linux users? Or people who just hate Windows? I used Windows for years and I hated it with a passion. Why are you psychically able to report that it's apple fans? - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>why do we not see a story every 5 seconds about DELL????
Becuase nobody cares about Dell. - CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Some pretty worthless "innovations" are above Boot Camp which I believe should be higher.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4taintparty,
I've got a few minutes, so I'll address your issues.
"1. Yeah, made by slaves that live at work in China (but who cares because it's China, right?)."
As someone already said, can you find an DAP that isn't made in Asia? The allegations were very embarrassing and when they were made public (I'll eat these words if you can find any proof that Apple knew about the conditions ahead of time), Apple took steps to correct them. Apple doesn't control their suppliers in Asia anymore than Dell, HP, or any one of a thousand other companies that use this labor force. If they don't get the job done or cause too much trouble, Apple replaces them. Just like every other company. Why hold Apple to a higher standard than everyone else? I don't.
"2. Plays songs from a music store that exploits musicians just as badly as they ever were (worse because they don't get paid for whole CDs, just the one song you bought)."
You do realize that Apple doesn't own the copyright to any of the material that you can buy off iTunes right? If the creators of said content are getting screwed, they're getting screwed by the very same companies that they signed exclusive contracts with. Blame them for being stupid, or their management for screwing them, it has nothing to do with Apple.
"3. Pushed DRM into the masses ensuring that Apple keeps it's customers by force. You CAN choose another brand but "your" music collection belongs to Apple."
This is almost beyond stupid. DRM sucks. I doubt anyone (even rabid Mac fans that you seem so frightened of) besides the RIAA or MPAA would disagree. Read my reply to statement 2. Apple doesn't own the copyright to ANY of the content you can purchase off iTunes. If Apple (and the thousand other Plays4Sure music sites that ALSO use DRM) didn't have DRM for content that does not belong to them, then the copyright holders would not provide said content. As far as being locked in, are you not bright enough to know how to use the very legal way that Apple provides to back up your purchased music so that it has NO DRM? That you can easily re-import these songs (as MP3s/AIFF/non-DRMed AAC) into your iTunes library or anywhere else you want them?
If you once owned an iPod and had a large library of songs purchased (God knows why. Most of mine are burned off my CDs), Just back them up as one of the formats I mentioned, and as long as your new DAP supports that format, import them into that.
Not all is sweetness and light with the iPod or iTunes IMO. I really don't like that any video (movies or TV) that you purchase cannot be burned to a DVD. You can back them up of course to prevent losing them in case of drive failure, but maybe, just maybe, I want to watch them off a standard DVD player. Or maybe my kids want to watch it in the car on a long trip. My choices of giving them my laptop to watch them (no way in hell), or a maze of wire from my laptop to a standard DVD player is inadequate.
I realize that Apple isn't getting the same free ride with the Video copyright holders that they got with music. But this needs to be addressed or I won't be buying much in the way of videos from the iTunes store (except for BSG episodes that I might miss on first run) - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When it first came out - it was pretty awesome. Compared to what Microsoft had at the time, it completely revolutionized web media.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10What about it?
POS that won't even play fullscreen unless you pay apple's extortion fee. - jamend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second the PowerBook G4 Titatanium. It's one of the most innovative laptops ever designed. In 2001 it was 1" thick, weighed less than 5.5 pounds, had a discreet graphics chip, and it introduced the now-standard 15" widescreen.
- Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your lame..
Its like saying all PC's only have a 5 1/4 floppy drive and a Amber monitor.
WAKE UP its the 2000's not the 1980's - mrgoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2***** jesus. Digg is degenerating to altnet ***** ***** fanbois arguing about ***** nothing. ***** the ***** off.
Also, the top ten list was ***** and ill thought out.
***** bollocks, the more popular Digg gets the more ***** it attracts. I think Kevin should request a feature where there a live flash thingy, showing media coverage of digg vs stupid ***** new members. - DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11. should be bringing the mouse into the home.
Xerox was first, we all know, but Apple brought it home. - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -14/+15So then, I guess you're not a huge fan of Apple products. The iPod "hype" has lasted a long time, longer than what I would call hype. Have you ever even used an iPod? It really isn't hype, it's a great product that works well.
I have a Mac and Windows PC, and I can't say I hate the PC, but I do prefer the Mac. Not everything Apple fanboys say is true (some apps do crash sometimes, although less often than any PC I've used), but I have to say you do get your money's worth with most Apple stuff. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you make that comment for any reason OTHER than to spam your blog URL?
- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13) Embracing open source:
Ripping off open source because their own OS was such a mess.
2) Accepting competition as a market reality:
Which is why they licence out fairplay to.....? no one. And have the most closed platform of any computer maunfacturer.
1) UNIX for the masses
The Masses who can afford and want Mac...?
I'll stick with Linux thank you. - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I particularly like the mention of the Newton. Although it was a failure, it's still a cool device, and it did pave the way for modern day PDAs.
I actually still have a working Newton. It's fun to putz around with, and it's fun to show off to friends and colleagues who are also interested in legacy hardware. - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm not talking about dualbooting Windows and Linux. I'm talking about dual booting OS X and Windows. It's all fine and good that you can do that, but you can't do it on Mac hardware *stock*. You're talking about using grub or lilo to dual boot on a standard x86 box. You can't do that on a Mac without either Bootcamp, or a few hideous hacks that I've seen.
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4No, what is innovative is how easily they can support multiple processor families with one executable and OS. Universal binaries can target 32bit and 64bit PPC and 32bit and 64bit Intel.
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about the trackpad for laptops, the floppy disk, first clock in the menubar, calculator, firewire? All of these things have affected the way we use our computers. Some innovations are not the actual items themselves, but what happened to the industry as a result.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Pismo runs 10.4 just fine, as long as you don't try to do anything real CPU-intensive on it (e.g. iLife or similar), but for stuff like word-processing and web-browsing, it's fine.
Real nice machine though. -
