- sethosayher, on 11/02/2007, -17/+508Isn't the Canadian Dollar worth more then American now as well? This is really unacceptable. Apple has been making horrible decisions lately...
- BZKyle, on 10/17/2007, -7/+130Wow, what the *****?
The big companies seem to be relying on the fact that stupid people don't know our dollar is even. - xotx69, on 10/11/2007, -3/+92It's not going to sell for $799 people. Take a deep breath and read the rest of my comment...
ARTICLE NOT TRUE - The article was corrected via the comments section. They now deny that it will be selling at Holt Renfrew:
update from digitaljournal.com:
"An update for all DJ readers.
We have received word from Mario Manza, Executive Director of VIP Services at Holt Renfrew, that they will not be carrying the iPhone for now. He said he confirmed this information with the buyers this morning and apologized for any misinformation on behalf of the company.
It sure is a weird scenario: Yesterday we placed cold calls to their accessories department and they were telling everyone the iPhone would be there in two weeks. They were even going so far as taking down phone numbers of people who called, informing them they will call back when it arrives in two weeks. They even quoted the exact price of $799.
Yesterday we also received a panic-sounding call from Holt Renfrew's PR team saying this deal was not confirmed "yet" -- "yet" being the operative word.
If you call today, however, the same employees are now saying they are no longer getting the iPhone anytime soon. Digital Journal's insiders are now saying the same thing.
As we mentioned, and as most people agreed, Holt Renfrew sounded like a very unlikely place for the iPhone to be launched in Canada. But the retailer does carry expensive Nokia, D&G and Prada phones, and they have carried iPods in the past.
So rumour is quashed, for now (according to Mario Manza). Holt Renfrew insiders still say Rogers will have it in January but they say it's not clear why a potential Holt Renfrew deal fell through. We'll see if we can get more information on that.
We'll keep you posted if we learn anything new." - Rikushix, on 10/17/2007, -19/+103***** you, Apple.
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -18/+98Step 1: Buy in the US and unlock it
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit - iNunchuk, on 10/17/2007, -5/+85$799? - Now that's just pushing it. Along with the retarded $6.95 System Access Fee (which by the way, needs some political action to abolish) and even worse, Rogers Inc. with its high priced cellphone services , not to mention internet services as well (to connect to iTunes/Apple Update). Might as well just buy it from states and use AT&T on Roaming, with our high dollar, im sure the prices would work out.
- lkv87, on 10/10/2007, -4/+77Step 2: Sell it to a Canadian for $699 ?
- turpenine, on 10/17/2007, -27/+99This needs to be said up here. This is one luxury retailer selling it. Not the service provider. Totally misleading headline. Burried.
- Konstantino, on 10/17/2007, -3/+64Speaking of that, ALL of our prices should be equal to or less than American prices now. It's cheaper to just drive to New York and buy something there.
- limezor2, on 10/17/2007, -10/+71I'm sorry, but this is bull *****. Everything is overpriced in Canada. Go 5 minutes (if there is no line up, which is impossible) across the border and you get 25% off ANYTHING.
- Skanadian, on 10/17/2007, -6/+51I usually don't Digg iPhone stories but this is ridiculous, especially since our dollar is on par with yours. Even with the dollar what it was at 15 years ago, it's still not equal. Canada just keeps getting ripped off.
- atdakore, on 10/17/2007, -2/+34what does this mean for us aussies?
$999 maybe - Icecream, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26needs more cowbell
- beatleman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23This comment may be slightly off topic, but now that the Canadian and U.S. dollars are close to equal (and assuming it stays that way), will the price on magazine covers not say "U.S.: $4.99, Canada: $6.50" anymore? Or will the Canadians continue to be charged more?
- TheIguana, on 10/17/2007, -0/+23There is an ongoing class action lawsuit up here in Canada over that 6.95/8.95 you pay. Back in 2003 the CRTC (Canadian FCC but with no backbone) decided it didn't need to collect the money anymore and took away the tax, however the carriers felt it was good for business to just line their coffers with that money. So basically we get screwed in Canada regardless, on cell phones that cost to much, from carriers who like to charge and pocket "fake" taxes and from government groups that don't stand up for consumers at all.
- DarkStalker, on 10/17/2007, -7/+29"Overpriced?? iPod + N800 + Phone == ??"
The N800 can already play video and music, so there's no need for the iPod. I've got Gizmo on mine, so no need for a phone either. - Speed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23And if you're in Northern Canada, like Edmonton, then you're really screwed, since a drive down to Montana is like 6 hours, and theres not even anything there in the first place.

Guess how much he saved... $11,000. - MrSteamTank, on 10/17/2007, -3/+22It's misleading sporb because it says something negative about apple. Remember that Apple can do no wrong! 8P
- clperez390, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Yeah, at the store i work at we only give you guys an 80% exchange rate, WTF.
- cello, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Some random site reports? No official confirmation? Playing on people's fear of an overpriced iphone?
Such ***** BS, give me a break. So much unconfirmed crap gets dugg it's stupid. - SirZRX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21i call BS
- Theli, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18I'm sick of roads and law enforcement.
- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Plus you're screwed because you live in Edmonton.
/former Edmontonian - Naga10, on 10/17/2007, -3/+19Why would you go back to Linux over the price of a phone? Last time I checked, Macs != iPhone.
Good riddance. - thirstyrobot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Story is inaccurate. Laughably inaccurate. Buried.
- JasonMcAuley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16No, the Canadian dollar is worth more then the American dollar now.
However, prices for MOST products do not reflect this. I know there are other factors in the price other then the exchange rate; but the prices Canadians pay on some products are MUCH higher; despite having a fairly equal dollar. - clothmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I'd pay 15% tax if it meant healthcare... just saying...
- punkrockxtian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14VAT? You mean gst and pst?
- cleverboy, on 10/17/2007, -0/+13I think people are being fairly dumb about this. First, its just rumor, not something to comment on without an "if this is true" before it. Secondly, we don't seem to know anything else. As it stands, iPhone requires an "always ON" Internet connection for certain things and Rogers rates compared to AT&T in America... Well, they are HORRIBLE! While some could use WiFi, that's not a complete solution. Existing data fees in Canada would make any cost of the phone pale in comparison. Wait 'til the plans are announced, that will tell the full story. Go to Rogers Wireless and find out what these current plans give them... 10 emails a day on Blackberry for $45/mo. Eesh. No matter that, this isnt goong to be pretty.
- Maltby, on 10/17/2007, -0/+13It was 1.02 the other day. They should be treated equal.
- ninethirty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I can't see this being true for a few reasons. The Canadian dollar has been so strong lately that the priced would have to be almost identical to the US price, and second... why in the hell would a source at Holt Renfrew have any idea? Holt Renfrew doesn't sell cell phones or electronics of any kind... they sell Chanel, Gucci, Armani, Prada, etc etc. It's a high end clothing store.
- compgeek, on 10/17/2007, -8/+21$799 ***** that. for what is basically an Ipod nano with a touch interface and a phone that's insane. granted I'm with Rogers and love their service but I'm NOT paying $799 for an iphone here when I could hop across the border buy it for $300 and unlock it. nice try apple but with the CDN $ being equal to the US $ a $499 price hike for us is not even worth trying no one that wants an iphone will do it at that price once they realize a brand new unlocked US Iphone will cost them maybe $400-450 in the end.
- jsqurred, on 10/17/2007, -3/+16I thought this was a rumor.
- iNunchuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Its 14% you dumbass.
- 1plant1world, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14That is so totally whacked! Same thing in bookstores here in Canada, $24.95 in USA $36.95 in Canada.
I am curious though, it is Holt Renfrew... I guess we'll have to see if that price remains true when it is available in the Apple stores. - airiox, on 10/17/2007, -16/+28You are forgetting they are selling at a "luxury retailer" not "AT&T". AT&T is paying a premium for exclusivity and is taking a hit offsetting several hundred dollars of what would be the actual unlocked price in return for a 2 year contract.
Totally misleading headline. Buried. - allan17, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14YOU ***** RETARD. CANADA IS IN AFGHANISTAN, FINISHING A JOB YOU GUYS WERE TOO ***** LAZY TOO FINISH.
- JohanLieberg, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18ermmm ..no.. the n95 is at least two generations ahead of the iPhone, feature-wise that is...
- Senturion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Buried as inaccurate.
This story was BS the day it was printed, 4 days ago, and has since been proven so.
There is no way Apple would sell the iPhone in Canada without a partner carrier and at twice the US price.
Canadian dollar > US Dollar.
How crap like this makes the first page of Digg is beyond me. - evilregis, on 10/17/2007, -1/+13A Canadian court has certified a class-action lawsuit against the telcos over this.
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNew ... - pintomp3, on 10/17/2007, -3/+15i don't know about outside the US, but apple usually dictates the pricing. if a retailer wants to sell apple products, they have to agree to this. the only workaround is usually on discontinued models or throwing in free extras. apple doesn't like their own retail being undercut.
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -2/+13unofficial retail rates of unlocked iphones here in india is.$674. Its insane how much people are charging for it and its even more insane that retards are paying for it.
- sporb, on 10/17/2007, -12/+23how is the headline misleading? holt renfrew is the only place you can get the iphone in canada. that means the iphone in canada is $799. headline is correct and you sir are burried.
- pyper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11That's what he meant in the UK they pay basicly the same tax as something called Value Added Tax, although when you see a price in a store the Tax is already included in the price. I prefer that, what you see is what you pay.
- thedak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Because that's not including tax? HIgh taxes = PST + GST, Income Tax. We have free trade, there are no taxes on the items actually coming over into the country, that is all due to retailers. We pay the tax when we actually purchase the item. (In Ontario I'm paying 14% on purchases, whoo)
- JombieZesus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11You have ZERO clue what you're talking about. Taxes are tacked on at purchase. And it's not 80%, it 6 to 13% depending on the province.
- Canadacdn, on 10/10/2007, -15/+26***** you, Apple. ***** you right in the ass.
