- Aeon53, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I like your idea of 3, but it seems it would be hard to do if you haven't already been doing it. I have a pretty big library (5000) songs, and I really can't be bothered to listen to them all and see which ones would make the "slow playlist"
- willis77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I have always wished iTunes would include the "or" operation in smart playlists.
i.e. if playlist is "Alternative" or "Rock" and "Top Rated" - leperkuhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Pretty solid list, big fan of #3
Just click “File” and then “New Playlist”. Title it “Slow Songs”. Any time you’re jamming away and Barry Manilow starts crying for Mandy, right-click him and choose “Add to Playlist » Slow Songs”. Then when you make smart playlists, you just have to add a restriction of Playlist is not Slow Songs. - elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well when you already have a decent sized library you just need to have "active listening sessions" where you will rate, tag, update the songs that catch your attention when you toss your library on shuffle, or something along those lines. I feel my iTunes library is always a work in progess. There is always more work to do to perfect playlists and your library in general.
- Spacejack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As far as "Beatles, The" goes, iTunes already ignores the word "the" in front of a band's name. Now what it needs is a checkbox in the tags to say "alphabetize by final word" so surnames can be used conveniently.
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8you're right bgbs, ipod is wickidy-wack and zune is all that. I'll be sure to buy all of Microsoft's radical products from now on.
- TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I dunno about anyone else but I am kind of in the mood to clean up my itunes library now.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It does. Once you have more than one criterion in your Smart Playlist, there's a dropdown menu at the top that asks if you want to select songs that match ALL the criteria or ANY of the criteria, which is basically AND/OR.
Unfortunately you can't do "A and B or C", but you can kinda do that by doing a playlist 1 that's "A and B" and then playlist 2 which is "Playlist 1 or C". - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can:
Playlist1: [Genre is 'A'] OR [Genre is 'B'] OR [Genre is 'C']
Playlist2: [Rating is 0] OR [Rating is 4] OR [Rating is 5]
Playlist3: [Last played is not in the last 14 Days]
Playlist4: [Playlist is 'Playlist1'] AND [Playlist is 'Playlist2'] AND [Playlist is 'Playlist3'] - billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks, I'll look for that on my favorite torrent sites! : D
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Tagging is a great idea that I haven't taken much advantage of yet. I tried to do a similar thing with genres early on, but it doesn't work well because each time you change a genre it has to re-copy the MP3 back to the iPod, causing the drive to become fragmented.
Here's my set up:
Ratings:
0: New, unrated music.
1: Awful, delete it immediately.
2: Not good. Only of historical significance. Do not copy to iPod, do not choose randomly.
3: Good.
4: Fantastic.
5: Super awesome all-time classic.
I have about 17 "meta" smart playlists that are used for forming the playlists I actually listen to. This allows criteria to AND'd and OR'd together.
http://www.csc.uvic.ca/~dastone/meta-playlists.png
Basically, I have genre-grouping playlists that are used for selecting songs from a particular era, genre, or mood. For example Classic, Early 90s, Heavy, Mellow, Modern, Indie, etc. These are chosen based on genre keywords, as well as the year and some tags.
I also have rating-choosing playlists that choose songs based on rating. For example, 3 star or greater, 4 star or greater, 0 or 4 and greater, etc.
I also have two manual meta-playlists, 'Good Stuff' and 'Bad Stuff' to universally accept or reject songs despite their ratings or genres. If I think I've been hearing a song or album too much I drag it into the 'Bad Stuff' playlist so that they're never chosen, and the songs I think are universally good I drag in the 'Good Stuff' playlist so that they may be included in every smart playlist.
Meta-playlists are then combined together to form the playlists I actually listen to. For example, [Early 90s] AND [Mellow] AND [0 or 4 or 5 stars]. These playlists are set to choose 100 songs at random, that have not been played in the last 14 days. This ensures I get a nice random mix all the time.
http://www.csc.uvic.ca/~dastone/playlists.png - GatorDavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's not possible. I just wrote that blog entry the day before yesterday.
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3is there a program and website than can import the top (2-5) playlist tags for songs automatically. I know http://www.last.fm has song tagging, but is there a program that will pull that information and tag it automatically?
- sancho320, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You both obviously work for Microsoft.
P.S. the iPod came out in November of 01 - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was going to recommend a playlist like #2 (Unrated), but then I saw it right there - it's helpful to push you to rate more songs.
Also there is a program for the Mac called Tangerine:
http://www.potionfactory.com/blog/2006/10/18/introducing-tangerine/
That automatically creates a playlist for you based on song tempo, that can be very handy. - dominic2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have one I rarely see on these lists: Have had a large library for ages so my most played songs are pretty untouchable as they have v high play counts, so I made a 'most played recently' smart playlist. Attributes:
- not spoken/ video etc.
- date added is in the last month
- limit to ten selected in order of most played
Pretty simple and its turned into one of my favourite playlists. - Soave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're using your iPod, that's bad for your battery life. It has to spin the hard drive and rewrite the cache more often, draining the battery quicker. Plus, it's not convenient to manually select songs if you have your iPod plugged into your car stereo or if you are exercising, for example.
- DaysInTheDark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I usually just pick the music I want to listen to. Seems crazy, but it works.
- nutcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2can anyone recommend an mp3 tag editor?
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Create one or more playlists of the songs you don't want to hear in the party shuffle, say 'Christmas Songs' and 'Kid Songs'. These can be smart playlists or plain old manual playlists.
Next, create a smart playlist called, say 'Party Shuffle Music', and set it to:
Match [all]:
[Playlist] [is not] [Christmas Songs]
[Playlist] [is not] [Kid Songs]
Finally, set party shuffle to pick songs from the 'Party Shuffle Music' playlist. - billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, he meant sorting Eric Clapton in with the 'C's, which iTunes cannot do, unless you manually change it to 'Clapton, Eric'. Ignoring 'the' is automatic.
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Then you can hide those "playlist 1"'s in their own sub-folder so you don't have to see them.
- uhbeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He wasn't saying to do it all at once. If you are in iTunes you can right click and select add to playlist. Add it to the list as you come across it.
- Soave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lately I've just been tagging through the comments part of iTunes. Like elShaggy said, you should have an 'active listening session' where you go through and tag stuff as you're listening. I made a list called "Untagged" that had any blank comment tags, and just went through each artist, tagging them based on genre and decade. Got about 1500 songs done last night; it goes faster than you would think.
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what are you trying to do? it was sort of explained before, but you can use other playlists as criteria... you just have to be creative.
- Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1download itunes control and use the global hotkeys to rate music while you are doing other things.
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Music Brainz adds meta tag information. What I want is an autotagger or auto playlist maker that will know what songs that I have and make playlists automatically based on keywords.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would have been easier to create a playlist called, say, 'Do Not Play at Random', in which you simply drag the songs, albums, or artists you don't want to hear. Then you create a Smart Playlist set to [Playlist] [is not] [Do Not Play at Random].
Better yet, you can use rating to accomplish the same thing, and that way you can make adjustments on the fly using the iPod. - edge001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i use iTunes a pretty good bit on my iMac at home... i usually just put it on party shuffle and let it go. how can i keep christmas songs and my daughter's nick jr. songs out of the party shuffle?
- fonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good suggestions. A bit too user-intensive for my liking (I do not want to drag songs into a playlist), but good suggestions none-the-less. I have spent my fair share of time with playlists, and I find that nothing works better than simply rating the songs. Then you just setup your playlists so that you have a higher chance of hearing a song with a high rating, than you do with a song with a low rating. Sort of like a controlled shuffle.
Anyway, an example of what I am talking about (writeup and screenshot) can be seen at the below URL. And I have yet to find an easier to manage solution.
http://www.fonzo.biz/2006/08/07/how-to-use-itunes-smartplayists-on-your-ipod/ - BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a perfect song to fit any mood, situation, and place that you are in at any given time. The problem is, you don't know what that song is. That's what shuffle is for.
- Aeon53, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@uhbeta I didnt say one would have to do it all at once. I said IF you weren't already doing it from the beginning, its going to take some time,...uhh, a LOT of time, especially with 5000+ songs.
- portos12, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Very similar site:
http://www.bestipodtips.info/ - BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Filter provides simlilar functionality.
www.thefilter.com - BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try Music Brainz.
- kanak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i recommend mp3tag (http://mp3tag.de/en/index.html)
- heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Instead of using smart playlists so much, I went through my entire library and chose the option to not play while shuffling on a lot of the songs.
I also use the top rated and most played playlists. - blahbbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sorry, I guess that sounded like an ad. To each his own, but it just seems kinda ridiculous to spend enormous amounts of time tagging your library when you could spend a few bucks and have something auto-generate a mix that is 90% as good as one that was generated through extensive tagging and Smart Playlists.
- neokyotodragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What I wish you could do is make playlists within playlists.
- folding12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Or 'Ignore "The" when sorting by Artist".
- fosibodu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This has been dugg before a while ago
- sashaboyd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0using http://www.seekpod.com/music recommendations to build playlists is one of the best ways
- blahbbs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Instead of messing with MP3 tags, a good solution I've found is to get Music IP Mixer at www.musicip.com for both Windows and Mac OS X. After analyzing your library, Music IP is quite brilliant at coming up with playlists without having to mess with genres and such.
They have a limited version for free, but the full version is something like $29. - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I would add a #4 that says - if you can't figure out playlists, uninstall life.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4digg down
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2If anyone cares, my 60 gig ipod is about filled and has only one album on it in which every song was rated 5 stars and it was Bob Dylan's 'Bringing It All Back Home'.
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2he's right-on and hip and all that. zune is the shiznit. ipod is so pre 9/11. microsoft didn't pay me much to say that. zune.com ya'll fo' real
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3DUDES!!!!!!!!! I just bought zune.
