- Me1000, on 03/20/2008, -3/+51Thank you Apple!
- colosis, on 03/20/2008, -2/+35oh..that time machine..
- MisterNetHead, on 03/20/2008, -1/+20120 seconds... not bad.
- smacman, on 03/20/2008, -11/+27It's about %$^&ing time!! I was more than a litte pi$$ed when Apple advertised this as a feature with Leopard then conveniently dropped it and pushed the Time Capsule..
- rodrigo74, on 03/20/2008, -2/+16I started reading "Time Machine now works..." and for a split of a second I thought one of the greatest dreams of every science-fiction fan became true. Thanks Apple for bringing me back to the real world :(
- astrosmash, on 03/20/2008, -5/+15That reminds me, I haven't connected my TimeMachine drive to my laptop in a while. I should do a backup.
Edit: All done! - ZennZero, on 03/20/2008, -5/+14Combine a spare hard drive with something like this for a decent looking Time Capsule work-a-like on the cheap:

- simplenation, on 03/20/2008, -6/+14should have been like this since day one
- MacParrot, on 03/20/2008, -0/+7If all you're going to do is spam every post, you'll find you have a pretty short life here on digg. Buried.
- otayyo, on 03/20/2008, -2/+9Glass half empty? I'm just saying.
- fribhey, on 03/20/2008, -1/+8no. airport express doesn't support external drives at all, let alone for time machine. only the extreme and time capsule support external HDs. the usb port on the express is only for networking printers/scanners.
- bigsteve, on 03/20/2008, -1/+7RTFA. Of course USB drives have always worked with many OSes, but now it works wirelessly with Apple's base station and with Apple's automated TimeMachine backup system. This was in OS X 10.5 beta builds but was removed mysteriously. Now it's back... odds are it did something strange in testing and Apple wanted to hash out the bugs.
- althe3rduww, on 03/20/2008, -0/+5I had been backing up my system via timemachine over the network to another mac running leopard previously. When you lose your network connection the backup automatically stops and just waits for your connection to return before it tries again, no big errors or interrupts.
- MacPrince, on 03/20/2008, -0/+5I'd rather that they get it right than get it out fast, especially when it comes to my backups.
- dariusperkins, on 03/20/2008, -0/+5No.
Read this:

If you want a RAID you'll need RAID hardware. - ericdano, on 03/20/2008, -0/+4So? Freaking ProTools LE or M-Powered aren't certified for 10.5, and HD is only for 10.5.1
- elmetald00d, on 03/20/2008, -5/+9hope you know you could just use a simple line in terminal and this would work prior to today. I've been using it for weeks
- MacParrot, on 03/20/2008, -0/+4From what I've read online, you could force it to work (as per what eletald00d said), but that it didn't work very well and was prone to dropouts. I just upgraded my AEBS ver 1 and I'll try it. I'm hoping this will work with multiple Macs at the same time.
- burrgrinder, on 03/20/2008, -0/+4Not the same thing.
- rdubya44, on 03/20/2008, -0/+4I just did this, took my already existing time machine drive and just plugged it into my AEBS. Note: You also need to update the AEBS firmware. I have a MacBook Pro, and it appears that it will only backup when the power cord is plugged in. It says "Next Backup: When Mac is plugged in" and I cant force it to backup. Anyone else getting this?
- robbymcdobby, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3"Doc, you're telling me you built a TIME MACHINE... out of a DeLorean?"
- timusca, on 03/20/2008, -2/+5Now can we please use USB drives that are plugged into another Mac on your network and shared?
- bigsteve, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3It does, but if you edit your post after submitting it in the 2 minutes you're given, any URL that digg truncates is now broken and needs to be re-copied-and-pasted from wherever you got it.
That said, I'm not sure why you're getting dugg down a second time, what you're saying is true. - mrBitch, on 03/20/2008, -1/+4Everything is possible, given an infinite amount of time to do the task. For example : Many years from now, Microsoft WILL finally release an Operating System that will NOT need anti-virus / anti-spyware software constantly running in the background.
- supermanred, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3You have no idea what you are talking about. Comparing Windows Shadow Copy to Time Machine is ridiculous. In 5 seconds I can retrieve a file with Time Machine from any time in the past since I started using Time Machine.
And I'd like to see Windows Shadow Copy working flawlessly by 1. Select backup drive. 2. Click the on button. Yeah right. - BossKey, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3yeah, like they should be quick and dirty when it comes to your backups...
- hotdamn, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3fail
- kelly, on 03/20/2008, -1/+3Oh no you de-int.
Well, not over airport you didn't. That's what it's talking about. - bigsteve, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2RTFA. Relates to plugging USB storage devices into Airport Extreme Base Stations.
- jmg703, on 03/20/2008, -1/+3nub
- BossKey, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2The disk must be formatted correctly and appear in the Finder first. There are other things to check for, being discussed on other Mac forums.
- blergle, on 03/20/2008, -2/+4About ***** TIME.
Now where are all the fanboy excuses as to why it wasn't technically possible? - REBELinBLUE, on 03/20/2008, -2/+4I did, sort of. Had given in and ordered one last week, but they are so backlogged right now that it was delayed until the end of next week. Cancelled my order as soon as I found out about this update and went out and bought a 1TB MyBook at lunch :D
- kaylov, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2Guess that is good news if it works - I am going to hook my Drobo up to my AEBS this afternoon to test it out
- wfbnadador, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2JUMPING JIGGAWATS!....(mandatory Time-Machine-story response, bury at will)
- dariusperkins, on 03/20/2008, -1/+3I think it'd be sensible to plug an ethernet cable in for your initial backup. Still, it shows the system isn't entirely reliable.
- macmangb, on 03/20/2008, -1/+3Unlike other companies Apple doesn't mind adding functionality even after it has made a sale. That's called ongoing support and that's what makes Apple such a great company.
- northernmunky, on 03/20/2008, -2/+4what?
- dariusperkins, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2Hmm. guess Digg doesn't support long URLs then...
Search for 'time capsule' at Apple Insider and look for the article "Answers to Time Capsule Reader questions" - Zippo, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2The fact was, you already COULD use a USB drive attached to a Time Capsule for Time Machine... that's why Airport owners were so pissed.
- etandrib, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2The settings are different for a NETWORK Time Machine drive and a USB/Firewire drive. I'm not sure about all the technical details but I remember reading this in Apple Insider's in-depth article. You can google it for the link.
- supermanred, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2Seems to be working awesome now.
- theskyman, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1Hold on let me plug in my external USB drive...(10 seconds later).....yep it works with Time-Machine too!
- agentsmithone, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1I did the update on my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro and I use a Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet) and it positively flies, my MBP gets around 8MB/sec on wireless N and the Mac Pro around the same. Time Machine will see some use thanks to this update. Way to go Apple! Seems like it works well for most folks too. Oh yeah, I'm using a 250GB Western Digital PATA IDE drive.
- err404, on 03/20/2008, -1/+2what? I have an MB and MBP backing up to a mini over my Airport. No problems and it's fast.
- 3vno, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1cool!!!
- FluffyArmada, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1Well, I think it would be a bit more fair to way that, someday, the average Windows user won' need anti-virus/anti-spyware running in the background. You can tell Microsoft is doing the best they can think of to protect their users, but you can't fix stupid. I'll also point out that I've been running Vista Ultimate (mind you on brand new hardware, so I don't have any compatibility issues) on a box I put together for almost 3 months now, and I haven't had a single problem with Virii or Spywares, and I don't run anti-virus, or anti-spyware. It's really a matter of how intelligently one computes. Of course, those problems really aren't out in the wild for Mac, I'll be the first to say that. My secondary computer is an iMac G5, and I haven't ever had a problem with a virus or spyware on that... some stupid Mac problems :-P, but no malware. Just my 2ยข.
- supermanred, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1The airport extreme is one of the best routers I have used, and though I still recommend cheaper ones for certain applications, I wouldn't use anything else at home. I'm glad they added the wireless time machine capability back, I used it during OS X leopard's beta period and it's just really handy. No matter where I leave my macbook in the house, I know that it's backed up..
Time machine rocks, it has a great file retrieval interface, and in seconds I can get that file the way it was last teusday, or that movie i watched then deleted 2 months ago. - postalblowfish7, on 03/20/2008, -1/+2About ***** TIME... MACHINE?
