- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8why do people still care what this dip says?
- thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Quick Search (now extended to Spotlight) got it's start in iTunes, or roughly 2001. Smart folders was in iTunes as well basically saving those quick searches. That was extended to other parts of the OS with Tiger (2005) such as the Finder and Mail. Dashboard is the modern equivalent of Desk Accessories from way back in Mac OS 6 (early 90s). All of these were Apple innovations, that have been refined or extended in scope. When did Microsoft create these? What product are they shipping in & when was it released for Apple to "copy"?
- balazs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5dude, wtf are you on about, quick search in vista they stole the idea from spotlight, you clearly have no clue. this thurrot guy is a crazy wacko who seems to be off his meds.
- flashdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7How did this make it to the home page with 20 diggs? BS as well.
- balazs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this is *****, i mean just cause apple reps attend MS meetings, and visa versa, doesnt mean they are copy each other. this guy must be a serious MS lover if he can state such things: not only would apple not copy Microsoft, but even if they thought of some good ideas, they wouldnt blatantly copy as Microsoft did (ie Widgets and Gagdets, I know APple didnt make widgets though!), Aero and Glass - Apple's Aqua interface, and the new instant search (a la Spotlight).
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Apple's Business Model > Thurrott
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm sure Apple keeps tabs on Microsoft. They would be stupid not to. Software developers don't live in a vaccum so of course they'll be influenced by other products. Nothing wrong with it. (although personally I would rather just go straight to the soruce instead of waiting for the MS copy years later but not everyone can jump ship over night)
- macko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're so right. It doesn't seem like he was being that serious.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I usually think Thurrot is pretty sensible but here he's talking completely out of his ass without knowing anything.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5reported as lame, who cares?
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't news or even a story. This is basically a blurb at the end of this writer's notes about the WinHEC conference. Can apple users (including myself) actually say they care about this? Wasn't it steve jobs himself who once quoted picasso saying, "Good artists copy; great artists steal”?
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A guy makes a few jokes and these people make a point-by-point rebuttal?
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Good question, all the people who dugg it had 0 stories on FP except for 1 guy with 1 story and the submitter who has had 283 stories. This doesn't belong on FP. Who cares? Report as lame.
- FreakyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well, I think it was fairly obvious that he was JOKING here, but it seems that you people just want to jump on the whole "OMG M$ iS TEH sUxx0RZ!!!!111" bandwagon.
At any rate, Microsoft HAS copied Apple in the past, but Apple has also copied Microsoft. While most of what Ramble suggested as examples are wrong, such as virtual folders, quick search, and dashboard, one is correct, as Front Row is, to a degree, a copy of media center. Also, Apple did copy the idea of a customizable "Start" menu in Mac OS 8.
And lynn, where's your source on that? - DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He was being sarcastic about apple copying Microsoft's ***** features. It wouldn't happen.
"Let's face it, the only companies whose products would benefit from copying Microsoft are Hoover, Dyson, Electrolux, Oreck, etc." - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't like Apple costumes :(
- DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lynn... OS 7 and Win95 have had search features aka "Find (command f)" or Search (win95) many many years. Google made it popular with it's integration into browsers and individuls web sites generated by google to paste into their html. Apple did this quick search very well in a seperatate app in the 90's called Sherlock, then it was integrated into OS 10, then spotlight in 10.4. They've always had built-in search but it wasn't as accessible as "Spotlight". But, before OS 10.4 I was using WinXP (not connected to the internet) to sort data because of the the use of wild cards in searches, that was nice. But spotlight does spank some windows ass now days and Microsoft will obviously copy Apple as usual to have improvments to their Long-Vista-Horn.
"balaza,
Microsoft announced quick search before spotlight."
Get off the microsoft band wagon or least move to linux. - reverb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple copied fast user switching from Microsoft. Steve Jobs admitted it in a keynote speech.
I don't see what the fuss is about. Tech companies adapt each others' ideas all the time. Example: tabbed windows in web browsers. NetCaptor got there first, but Mozilla popularized the idea with Firefox. Of course, if a company does far more borrowing than innovating, that's a valid complaint. - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Looks like Job's personal rimmers have buried this already.
- Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thurott == Dvorak == irrelevant old windbag.
Time for these dinasa;urs to retire. They are completely out of touch. I refuse to ever click on links to either of their rantings. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wuptedo, and they both copy and stole from Xerox.
- timmer123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just so people won't think that an index search first came from MS, I point you to http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.14/14.04/UsingAIAT/index.html - date: 1997. Indexed searching has been present in Mac OS for a long time under the names AIAT, V-Twin and Sherlock. Spotlight and Tiger extended the searching throughout the OS, but V-twin searching in the Finder was present long before MS made the announcement or even thought of Vista.
- Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Get your facts straight. MS announced widgets before Apple. MS announced search before Apple's spotlight.
- Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5This give me reason: I have yet to see a long time Apple costumer who is not a complete ***** idiot.
- UnnDunn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Agreed. Short Takes is an IRREVERENT look at the week's news. As in, tongue-in-cheek.
Apple fanbois really need to get a grip. - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4balaza,
Microsoft announced quick search before spotlight. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What are you blokes complaining about?!!? Business models copy after eachother all the time! Remember all the fast food joints coming up with the "gift cards." Everyone copies everyone. Ideas for the most part are not patented. If one guy does something, the other guy is going to look at it and try to improve it, because it works. I didn't see anyone complaining about FF having some of the same "features" as IE, or Thunderbird looking EXACTLY like Outlook.....
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5For once Thurrott is correct. i have been saying this for about 2-3 years now. Apple does copy Microsoft. Quick search, virtual (smart) folders, dashboard, even media centre. Granted, some technologies woudn't have been around if it wasn't for someone else (quick search - linux), but Apple sure as hell wouldn't have stolen MS's implementation of it if it wasn't going to be a feature in Vista.
Digg this down all you want Apple 'Who uses a laptop on their laps' fanboys, but it's the truth and you know it.
