- selgan, on 10/12/2007, -26/+395I can't wait for somebody to come out with a parody commercial "hi i'm a mac.... i'm on fire!" "hi i'm a dell... i'm on fire too!"
- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -40/+171What the hell does the Angel/Devil one even mean? That has nothing to do with computers!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -105/+226Got to love commercials that bash the competition rather than extol the virtues of their own product. Glad Apple resorts to FUD in order to sell their stuff.
I guess I probably just committed Digg-suicide by blaspheming the shrine of the holy Apple, maybe set a record for the number of down-diggs. Let's see if we can hit quadruple digits! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -44/+142Don't forget, if you really want to be buried, say something pro-Microsoft, even without bashing another OS.

How is the ad campaign inaccurate?
Macs aren't affected by spyware and viruses: Fact.
The mag-safe prevents your laptop getting messed up: Fact.
Macs are more geared towards fun and creativity: Fact.
Macs come with more software and work out of the box: Fact.
Macs run OS X and Windows. PCs just run Windows: Fact.
You don't need to install drivers to run third party devices on Macs: Fact.
The list goes on. Exaggerated? Maybe. But definitely true. - phpfreak, on 10/12/2007, -8/+71Digg was great when commenting wasn't about flame wars. What has made it even worse is the comment rating system that buries comments such as yours, for the sole reason that you said you liked something. I know this will be dugg down like there's no tomorrow, but I just had to say something about this whole ordeal. I loved digg when it was a small community, but it has gotten out of hand - people insult each other around here for no other reason than to better their status and make themselves look good.
- randomgeek, on 10/12/2007, -28/+76Yes, you loose that photo album. Because laptops don't come with batteries...

They would be if people bothered targeting them. "Invulverable" due to unpopularity. GG Apple."
this has been tested and proven to be false, OSX architecture is safe by design. - Antimatter3009, on 10/12/2007, -10/+52@zacmccormick
They are safe by design. The simple fact that users are not running as administrator is good enough to say they're safe by design. It's the thing that MS is trying to copy in Vista. However, unlike MS, OSX (and other Unix based OSes) have always been designed this way, plus it's built into the system and not a security layer added on top. Of course, that's not to say it's perfect. There could be holes that haven't been found yet, but the fact is it's designed to be secure, where as Windows is not. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -78/+119I was wondering if you guys can help me with my Mac. It doesnt seem to be supporting any games, I can only play with Photoshop's paint brush.

I'd rather lose a photo album than the whole computer because I tripped over the cord and sent the notebook flying and crashing on the ground.
And with Time Machine, I won't worry much about losing a photo album... - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -22/+58Not inaccurate, just not the whole truth. And exaggerated.
- tofagerl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Dude... Your first instinct was digg.com, instead of Apple.com?

Justin Long kicked ASS in Galaxy Quest, and John Hodgman continues to kick ass on the Daily Show.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24bi0metric:
Being Anti-Mac is a cult by itself too... Most Anti-Mac people don't know much about the Mac itself, they just repeat what their Anti-Mac friends said.
So continue to react like you do to these ads, I'm sure you'll cause more people to switch to the Mac. - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -33/+55"Macs are more geared towards fun and creativity: Fact."
My library of computer games begs to differ. I can also get pretty creative with access to about 10x as many graphic design apps. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Apple doesn't use CRTs anymore, and LCDs aren't affected. It takes much stronger magnets to mess up hard drives.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23> Got to love commercials that bash the competition rather than

Apple has been largely defined in the last 10+ years by people who despise their machines (still deal with the persistent anti-Mac myths on a regular basis) and victims of a seemingly neverending FUD campaign against their products. These ads are right on target. Apple needs to define its own products and they are turning the tables on their own image and those who bash them. What's the problem with that? Do you get this bothered when people say there is no Mac software or Macs can't multitask or Macs can't run games or etc? It's the same FUD, just Apple on the receiving end.
I love how regularly PC users feel the need to lecture Mac users about how "it's a machine, not a lifestyle choice." And yet, PC users are so quick to get personally offended by these ads. Curious. - chmod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21"I used to come here for tech and gaming news but now 90% of it is mac cultisit crap. These commercials are stupid, this shouldn't even be on the front page. and they should rename digg and just turn it into an apple fanboy site."

- Qdub, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21I like the fact that Apple is actually starting to advertise some of the things that their software can do other than claims of things it can do. I like the magsafe one where PC describes the Windows XP desktop.

Mac antiviruses are geared towards preventing macs from spreading windows Viruses. They are mainly used when connected on a network with windows machines so that you dont forward the britneyspears.scr file which is harmless on your mac, but might bring down a windows machine. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21>What on god's green earth is this supposed to mean? "Hack-My-Mac Challenge Leaves System Shipshape
By Gregg Keizer, TechWeb Technology News
A university systems engineer who said a Swedish
hack-my-Mac contest was too easy closed down his own
challenge Tuesday, and said that even after 4,000 log-in
attempts and two denial-of-service attacks, his Mac mini
remained untouched. Dave Schroeder, a senior systems
engineer at the University of Wisconsin, launched his
contest Monday by setting up a fully-patched Mac mini
hosting a Web page, and challenging attackers to have at
it."
or you could be mistaken. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Yeah, because the Apple adds need a 30ish man-boy who sounds like he's on helium.
- dixonr315, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Agreed, the ads are funny and clever, personal preference aside I think people would agree. Or if it makes you feel better, pretend its a peanut butter comparison, like Skippy vs. Jif, its all for fun.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20> I love macs but they are way more expensive than a normal laptop
> that has the same hardware in it.
No they're not. - infamousempire, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I'll be honest, I came onto digg at this exact moment because I saw one of these on the Emmy's, and I wanted to see the other two. Thanks for making my life easy and being the first story on the page.
- addicted44, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Also, what most Techies here seem to forget is what Apple is the only one that realizes. Most of the market that these ads target cannot tell the difference between a 2.0GHz Core Dua and a Sempron 2000+. For them those numbers mean nothing. However, having someone who represents PC's getting jealous of what the mac produces, resonates far better with them, and is far more attractive to them.
- YoGramMamma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You guys (and gals) wanna know why Apple makes these commercials? I'll tell you....
A couple days ago i got an IM from a friend on my buddy list asking "blah blah can i put this pic of you in my myspace profile with a link to a .de website on it. Of course, as the avid digg reader and computer extraordinaire i knew what it was right away.. a F'ing virus. I hadnt talked to this particular friend online in months.. why is she IMing me about this? why not say "hey" first? why post a pic to a .de photo hosting site? all obvious signs TO ME. So, I IM this friend... "you know you have a virus right?", i say .. she replies, "yeah alot of people have told me... a friend sent me this link about putting a pic of me in her myspace profile, she says, .. and i clicked it. I go, "WHAAAAT! WHY WHY WHY did you click that? did it not occur to you that it was a .de site? or that this friend didn't bother to say hey first, or that they hadnt talked to you in forever probably, or that NO ONE asks if they can put someones pic on the web.. they just DO it..." Of cousre she was remoreseful and was mentioning how she had just got off the phone with Best Buy who she was about to take the Viao in to only to pay $150 to have it fixed. She proceeded to apologize for the virus sending me the link, and i told her all was well because a) i have a mac and it wouldnt affect me anyway, and b) I didnt click the link in the first place. She goes, WHAAT, you have a mac and wont get the virus?!?!? and i say, yes.. and she says "Hey is that like the commercial of the 2 guys standing there and one crashes and the mac one doesnt because he doesnt get viruses" and i say... "more or less, yes."
LONG story short.. this is the 3rd time shes taken her computer in to be fixed for reasons like this over the 2 years she has had it... AND she is buying a macbook next go round.
Flash forward 2 days to another friend of mine who happened to have the SAME thing happen to her on IM. same message, same link, same process. only replace Vaio with iBook. I give the same speech about being CAREFUL WHAT YOU F'ing CLICK ON.... but to this friend i say. ok, well open safari, open the downloads window, find out what the name of whatever you downloaded is called.. go over to spotlight... search for that... then trash it and empty the trash. End of story. No best buy trip, no hassle... dumb mistake.. YES.
THIS is the kind of people Apple is targeting. Both of these individuals made mad choices in click that retarded link, but one made a good choice about a year ago when she decided to get an iBook. You won't find me preaching about how everyone in the world needs APPLE and how its roxxorz and all that mess... but the MAJORITY of computer users would fall into the same category that my 2 friends did... careless... and willing to give best buy $150 to fix their mistake....in which case, a Mac would be a better choice. Period.
Take the 150 dollars that friend #1 would have spent over the 2 or 3 times she had to have best buy fix her computer... then tell me how much you're saving in the long run when you compare a $799 whatever notebook to a $1099 macbook. hmmm? - cheez, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16is it just me, or is the mac guy (justin long, right?) starting to look like noah wyle from pirates of silicon valley?
- jwdav, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15You never see MS talking about any other OS because they have the largest market share. Rule #1 of advertising is that if you are the market leader by a wide margin, you ignore other competitors. Rule #2 is that if there is a dominant market leader and you are a smaller competitor, you go after the market leader in your advertising.
The assumption is that most people know about the market leader, and may be looking for an alternative, so it makes sense for Apple to go after MS by name. Makes no sense for MS to come after Apple, as it would actually have the reverse effect of advertising for Apple. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Some people don't like cruelty and bullying in their humor."
I like the ads and I hate cruelty and bullying.
Cruelty and bullying towards a computer? OMG please call the Computer Protection Society!
Remember, the two characters of these ads are not Mac and PC users, they are anthropomorphized computers... The PC just have "accidents" that the Mac is not responsible for. I don't see where the cruelty is...
I'm sure much more kids were beaten up in real life for using a Mac than the opposite. Real bullies use PCs, it's just "common sense". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12> accident? more like MACCIDENT.
> seriously, macs are trendy crap and these *****, innacurate
> commercials are irritating.
Someone sounds insecure and confused. Enjoy your Start Menu, junior. - sibhod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11iSEPIC:
It's not Apple or Jobs fault the US patent system is so ***** up. They are just playing the patent game like hundreds of other companies. The problem is if any one company decides not to patent early and often, they will be raped by lawsuits.
It's a broken system but it's not apple's fault. - Cannon13, on 10/12/2007, -19/+29@Jesse
Do your research before commenting. There are no viruses actively effecting OS X at this time. The only reason there is anti-virus software for Macs is so Norton and Mcaffee can try to get more money.
Again, market share has nothing to do with the amount of viruses for Macs. People would love to create a virus for OS X because they would go down in history. The incentive is there, the capability isn't.
Yes, PC's work when you plug them in, but uninstalling bundles of software and configuring everything takes time. OS X takes about 5 mins from plugging it in to being ready to go.
PCs have external features, but they are all third party add-ons. Things like the magsafe and iSight are made and included in the box by Apple. - wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I think everything inside that could be damaged is shielded enough for it not to matter, and the magnet isn't really that strong, it's meant to be pulled out easily.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@zacmccormick: "If that makes lets you sleep at night.. ok. But if you know a shred about how operating systems are designed and how complex they are, and how many points of entry and infinite possiblities for attack there"
Do you even realize that the point mentioned above about running as "admin", actually covers what you just said in response? Running as "admin" (or "root"), giving any process on your computer the *right* to affect the system on all levels, which is why all those points of entry actually matter. Moreover, the underpinnings of Windows and IE (its built-in default browser), are rooted in Windows Scripting Host and Active X, wired throughout the system. As a technology, these features were NOT... repeat... were NOT originally designed with "security in mind" (which has come to haunt Microsoft).
As such, everything being said is right on target, and you're simply being a Windows zealot. Take your medicine. These commercials are salt in the wounds, but they're dancing on distinctions that make MacOS a choice many PC professionals have turned to in their homes (to prevent their kids from tying up their free time fixing their home computers for virus attacks and spyware).
It's not at all disingenuous logic being thrown out there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15In case you didnt know, he is infact a writer, the writer of one of my favorite books in fact- The Areas of my Expertise. He's also starred in They Might Be Giants venue songs as the deranged millionare.
So before you go spouting trash about him just because he was on the daily show, at least give his book a read - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11No, a bug in 'QuickTime Alternative' is crashing Firefox because 'QuickTime Alternative' is implemented by a bunch of amateurs.
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16@all maczealots and macholes
Maybe now that you passed the first test to "get a mac" you should proceed to step two and "get a life". I'm a mac lover and I do feel the OS is great. But i'm not going to pretend that these ads are anything more than what they are. Paid advertisements skewed at gimmicking people into buying macs by unnecessarily slamming PC's. This angle just doesnt work because they're advertising to their own crowd.
Macs are great and all, but PC's in the hands of non-idiots are great also. It would be nice if more people switch to mac but it won't happen until you macholes start being less condescending and defensive. These ads are fun. Thats it. - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9And what percentage of the population uses Firefox and takes care not to mistakenly download malicious spyware?
You people seem to forget the target audience here. Yes I'm sure your XP box is absolutely tweaked to the max and runs perfectly and you've never fallen for any phishing sites or downloaded any malicious software. But you represent the minority, not everyone has either the knowledge or inclination to be as stringent with their systems.
And frankly, they shouldn't have to. - FatController, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I've had dogs, kids and other adults all yank the power cable out of the various notebooks I've owned. I've never done it myself, either, but it happens. Thankfully all the cords disconnected, but in one instance the notebook was jerked all the way to the end of the counter it was on.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15I know that some people hate these ads, but I think they're pretty funny.
- chmod, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"It's not 750.00 every 6 months, its paying for upgrades every 6 months for 5 years, totally 750.00"
Sorry, that's not how you wrote it:
"having to spend over $750.00 in upgrades every 6 months over the last 5 years"
Not twisting your words, just interpreting them as they are written. I'm no linguist, but at the very least your wording sucks.
"are you 12 years old or a typical Apple cult member, twisting my words?"
Nope, 22 & old doctoral student (in Computer Science). Also, not really a cult member, just someone that likes the thought of a good, solid consumer laptop that is based on unixy underpinnings.
"Get a clue before opening your pie hole."
Got one. See points one and two.
"And yes, in about 5 years, you'll spend about 750.00 in upgrades, nuff said."
As I said, I have had my laptop since about may of last year, and will not have spent any cash on upgrades for the near future. That will (most likely) be over two years with no upgrade costs (unless something unforeseen happens). I was making a counterpoint to your baseless argument. Please don't be a jerk about it.
P.S.
pie hole? That's really cute. Makes me feel really immature. - dragonopolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Who cares about which computer is better than the other the fact is Apple Computer has some great ads. The commercials are hilarious and I never owned a Mac. Kudos to Apple.
These MS Windows worshippers are just jealous. I use Windows XP without having half the problems they mention in the commercial but still there is some basic truth to it all. If I didn't run a firewall, anti-virus, spyware scanners/cleaners regularly and defrag once a month I probably have all those issues. Not everybody maintains Windows XP like they should which is why I think Linux will never take root. People are just to lazy. They don't want to have to deal with the mundane task of the OS. They just want to press a button and get to work. That said Apple is still slightly ahead of both Windows and Linux in this regards. I've been using Linux for three years and even after trying the recent Ubuntu or Suse 10.1 I still feel Windows is just easier to work in than Linux.
Right now Windows just works for me - haven't had any issues. But this silly devotion to a particular OS is stupid. Apple, Windows, and Linux are all really good Operating Systems and each have their own strengths and weakness.
Well got to run. Great Commercials. Can't wait to see what other cool stuff they come up with. - BenSerwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Look, when Mac talks about 'being geared towards fun and creativity', they're talking about their computers coming bundled with iLife, an easy to use, fun, and full-featured creativity suite. PCs very rarely come bundled with anything similar, and never come bundled with anything as high quality and user friendly as iLife.
Not a mac zealot, don't even own one, but it's true that Mac does some things better than a PC, and that's one of them. - sibhod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Exactly. These ads aren't targetted to the typical digg user. They are for people like my mom or girlfriend don't care about tech specs or anything like that. They just want a simple fast machine that can check email, organize photos, burn DVDs of home movies, not have a million errors and to look good doing it.
