- nick34, on 10/12/2007, -3/+69I first read the headline as "Tony Hawk says...", and was like wtf does he have to say about any of this stuff??
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -6/+56Even assuming you had read it right, who the hell is Thomas Hawk and why should I care about his opinion?
- aarona, on 10/12/2007, -10/+49Some choice quotes from the blogspa- erm, article:
"Ok, so earlier this week when Steve Jobs penned his beautifully crafted anti-DRM missive, thoughtfully entitled, 'Thoughts on Music,' I wrote a post about Steve Jobs being a marketing genius."
"Apple makes the best consumer technology in the world right now."
"The Mac is vastly superior to the PC."
"The iPhone will be one of the best phones ever."
"Now if this [the end of DRM] happens everyone will point to Job's anti-DRM (at this point in the canon of great computer literature) letter as being the catalyst for all this great change."
This blog post reads like a primer on "How to Make Front Page on Digg." - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32"This blog post reads like a primer on "How to Make Front Page on Digg.""
Well, yah gotta admit that it worked - joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31interesting story, horrible writing. that stupid blogger loves himself a little too much
- bofhcabbit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Just in case it catches on and gets big, I assume?
I've seen far too many stories hit the front page and no one has bothered to mirror it yet, it's frustrating. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Most bloggers do ...
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"why mirror a story with 1 digg?"
Because it will be on the front page, that's why. - robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Umm... who the ***** is Thomas Hawk and why should I care what he thinks?
Seriously, not trying to be a smart-ass, but this is posted like we're all supposed to know who this guy is and like his opinion matters in our lives or something. Are we treating bloggers like celebs now? It sure would be nice if he could get the grammar thing down too (i.e., it's vs. its.) - Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21"maybe... but is he wrong on those points? i think not."
Um, yeah, he is wrong, because they're not points. They're opinions. If I were forced to come up with an actual definition of a "fanboy", it would probably be a person who supplements facts with opinion to rationalize their own choices. - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -12/+25This guy is a die-hard Apple fanboy. I'd be suprised if he doesn't name his first child Lisa, even if it's a boy. That being said, I do agree with his analysis on how Steve Jobs letter will affect the recording industry, though in all fairness EMI had already been considering a move to a non-DRM distribution model before he wrote this. Metaphorically speaking, Jobs letter is pouring gasoline on a fire that was already started by thousands of disgruntled fans and artists.

http://biz.yahoo.com/seekingalpha/070211/26599_id.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25Thomas Hawk is a total clown. Not even a funny clown that rides around in a tiny firetruck or anything like that...he's just a regular clown with a ***** blog and an even ***** job (as chief whining officer of doomed startup Zoomr.com)
And he can't skate for *****. - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -16/+26Is this an open letter?
"Apple makes the best consumer technology in the world right now. The Mac is vastly superior to the PC. The iPod is better than the Zune. The iPhone will be one of the best phones ever."
Can you say "fanboy"? - CaveMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It could certainly do with a little proof-reading. From the article:
"It offers Jobs a valid defense to the argument that iTunes are basically filled with pirated songs and that's all that really matters." - tbeseda, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15yeah. I'm an Apple fan, but those remarks don't really belong in a publication like this... especially one labeled "open".
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Use the REPLY link instead of "@blahblahuser"
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I download from emusic.com, import into itunes, manage my playlists, and sync to my ipod. I'm just not downloading much from the itunes store but it probably doesn't bother Jobs or Apple one bit
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7> Apple uses a proprietary format for all iTunes downloads which limits
> the download to use on an iPod or thru iTunes
Get your facts straight. AAC is standard MPEG-4 audio and is supported by multiple devices and software; the Zune, for example. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12> Steve Jobs does not want DRM to go away
Only the most pathetic Microsoftie would still try to tow this line.
Apple has 75 - 80% of the MP3 player market, and 75 - 80% of the on-line music sales market. DRM has *nothing* to do with this success. Nothing.
Where do Apple go from here? Certainly not up. Apple created the iTunes music store to make the iPod more attractive, because it's iPod sales that makes Apple their money. There was no guarantee iTMS would be a success, considering that it's so easy to download stuff for free. iPod users are not and have never been forced to use iTunes Music Store. The fact that iPod users do use the service is an attribute only to its impressive quality.
The bottom line is that while other tech companies including Microsoft bend over backwards for the music industry and will happily work towards making DRM more ubiquitous and pervasive, Apple is the only one to stand up to the RIAA and suggest removing DRM altogether. It would create a level playing field on which Apple has already proven it can dominate, and more importantly it would dramatically grow the on-line MP3 sales market, which is the only thing Apple can try to do at this point, since their market share certainly can't get any higher. - H3avyC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Apple doesn't need DRM anymore. Their user base is not going to be eroded any time soon, and they'll still lock you into iTunes software to sync up your iPod. The only difference would be the file format of the music itself. For about 95% of users out there, nothing would change.
Joe Blow is going to buy their iPod, install iTunes, and buy music from the iTunes music store because it's built right in and works. As long as Apple doesn't allow other 3rd party players to work natively in iTunes, they are still going to keep a fairly large competitive advantage with the average user. - insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This guy is seriously confused. Jobs has everything to gain from drm and a lot to lose without it. He loves drm. He statement was made to appease the growing foreign opposition to drm. If Europe bans it, jobs has no choice but to drop it. But without drm, itunes and the ipod will no longer be locked together. People could buy their music from another online source, or use itunes without buying an ipod. Make no mistake Jobs wants/needs drm to be successful.
- Oetzi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'll agree with that. Here's a few diggs for your correct statement
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14@jgreene777
Whatever dude, how do you breathe with your head up your ass? Those were not "facts", they were opinions and didn't belong in that post at all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I would suggest that you stop looking for "articles" on blogs. The two are conceptually exclusive in most cases
- DerekV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I stopped reading after
"Apple makes the best consumer technology in the world right now. The Mac is vastly superior to the PC................"
Why does this need to be in the article at all? He was making a lot of valid points, then he feels the need to insert opinions that have nothing to do with DRM, the RIAA or the iTunes Store.
And please could you people stop saying the word fanboy? - tbeseda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This supplements Alex's point made in the recent edition of Diggnation.
http://digg.com/podcasts/Diggnation/248607
Jobs will come out of this looking like the good guy, no matter what.
Fine by me. Like Alex said, whatever gets rid of DRM. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Apple makes the best consumer technology in the world right now. The Mac is vastly superior to the PC. The iPod is better than the Zune. The iPhone will be one of the best phones ever."
I know that statement has been paraphrased several times already, but damn, I just have to say this;
Thomas (whatever) Hawk and those type of people ***** me to tears. You know - the type of people who instead of saying "I _prefer_ product x over product y" they say "product x is the best" - with no bloody explanation.
Just because you prefer something, that doesn't mean it is better! - thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Um... iTunes tracks are standard AAC with a DRM layer. Once the DRM is removed, any device which plays AAC can play the tracks. If Apple is able to get the music industry on board with no DRM, they can simply remove the DRM layer from the already downloaded tracks & boom, everyone has restriction-free AAC. AAC is the replacement for MP3 & doesn't require the patent tax of MP3, it's an open standard often times refered to as MP4 audio. It's a common misconception that AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) was created by Apple. Check out the Wikipedia article.

"Fanboy isn't a bad term - is it? Are their fangirls? Can fanboys and fangirls have fankids?"
Yes, fanboy is a bad term. It implies that the fanboy (or girl) are irrationally loyal to a brand or company and will outright deny any flaws in that brand/company while bashing the competing brand/company. Fanboys blindly think that their brand/company is best and can do no wrong, no ifs ands or buts. Nothing can dissuade their loyalty, especially logic and reason (possible proof from this point will come to light if and when this comment is burried). - Kryose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Distinguishing between fanboy and fanboi is like distinguishing between crap and feces. When all is said and done its still the same old *****.
Crap = Feces
Fanboy = Fanboi
Dont try to justify yourselves, a fanboy is a fanboi is a Ph4||B0'/. - lysdexia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It might have been more interesting than that article - a heart-rendingly *****-erotic paean of man love for Jobs from hawk. It was almost embarrassing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Apple makes the best consumer technology in the world right now. The Mac is vastly superior to the PC. The iPod is better than the Zune. The iPhone will be one of the best phones ever. And..."
This article needs a disclaimer: "Beware, Fanboy Rant ahead..." - tyho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yea I agreed with most of what he says in the article. But the line "The Mac is vastly superior to the PC." is not even an arguable position. The difference between the two is purely subjective from each persons own perspective.
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Apple fanboys make Sony fanboys look like intelligent observers.
Incurring their wrath will get you dugg down and you car rigged with an explosive shaped like a brushed metal, clear round fruit. For logic is their bane, and turtlenecks their uniform. - offspring06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Parasitic music industry as it destroys itself"
I'm always reminded by this line in the NOFX song "dinosaurs must die" when I read something about the music industry. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A digg up for you sir.
- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -15/+19I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
- AdamGott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Just once I would like to read an objective (i.e. fair and not slanted) article about Steve Jobs or Apple.....
- artemster, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13"fanboy" to a degree - but his statements are not that far off. I think he overgeneralizes a little, but if you think Zune is better than iPod, you, sir, are much farther from the truth.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Umm... who the ***** is Thomas Hawk and why should I care what he thinks?"
He has a blog...you don't.... instant web credibility - realyst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yarrr, I feel ye might be too late, laddy boy. The fanboys done caught up with me. I'll fend them off as fast as I can, but they've begun throwing their onslaught of mighty mouses and iPod Nanos. I fear the end of me once they start throwing iLamps...
Save yourself, and tell people what you've seen here! - tbeseda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I agree with your point.
He was fanboy-ish, but more of an enthusiast. Still, the rant about Macs being vastly superior was not needed.
He did make a few good remarks about the effect and true intention of the letter written by Jobs. You and I both agree on this. I'm just hoping the fire doesn't go out and DRM becomes a laughable thing of the past. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6> they've never heard of anything else
What are you talking about. People who buy MP3 players are music fans who already have a collection of music they want to listen to. To suggest that iPod users don't know where to get their music other than iTMS is ridiculous. - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6the Apple fan boys are just pissed off that we can digg and undigg using our left and right mouse buttons respectively ;)
- unit101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The difference is that unlike most diggers, Jobs is the CEO of a company that has ~80% of the mp3 player market and is one of the largest music retailers. When someone like him comes out against DRM, it's a big deal, like it or not.
- Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10"The Mac is vastly superior to the PC."
Yeah, that was my cue to stop reading.
A big player does need to drop DRM and see what happens. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> Apple had no choice but to use DRM
Agreed, it was a condition imposed by the RIAA
> and the nature of the DRM does not give them the option of opening it to other hardware venders."
Then Microsoft must be doing something amazing because they seem to have succeeded in licensing their DRM to third party hardware manufacturers. - shastafir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I especially appreciate his post hoc attempt to come across as impartial about Apple products...
"And... you almost thought I was going to say that iTV was the best way to consume television didn't you? Psyche." - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2--oops--
