- wonderwal, on 11/03/2009, -0/+9It can't be here that soon, but this could be a sign of things coming faster than expected.
- Insert31990, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7***** SON, I'LL TAKE TWO.
- darkciti2, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6This means they could be speculating.
- DeadFox1, on 11/04/2009, -1/+5A few things people were speculating about the 3GS that would be nice: OLED screen, camera in front, even faster processor...
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/04/2009, -2/+5i kind of doubt that the 4th rev of the iPhone will hit until the 2 year contracts of the 3G owners are up. This happened, roughly, with the 3Gs. It may not have been the big step up over the 3G, but it very much was a huge step up from the original iPhone. Releasing iPhone revs out of order would hamper the potential sales, since most 3G owners still have 6-8 months left on their contracts, and 3Gs owners have well over a year left on theirs.
- protodon, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3So you're telling me the 4g iphone will be mostly screen, a home button and a camera? shocking..I like the people out there who are hoping for the redesign and get disappointed when all the iphones look the same.. How many lcd monitor redesigns are there because this is essentially the same thing.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2@Bentleyk9
read my comment again. I said the 4th rev won't come out until 2 years after the 3G contracts are up. this happened with the 3G[s] [...] it was very much a huge step up from the original iPhone.
the 3G[s] was roughly 2 years after the original iPhone. it may not have been a huge step up from the 3G, but it was for original iPhones. the same could possiably happen with the 3G (second gen) iPhone, moving to the 4th gen.
Odd numbered releases as an upgrade path for original owners, and even numbered releases for the 3G owners. So the 5th Gen will set up from the 3rd gen, the 6th gen a step up from the 4th gen, etc.
simple math, learn2abacus - lazlonger, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2I'm guessing you might be right!
- xaeropain, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2FTA: Even while Apple COO Tim Cook dismissed Android—saying that Google phones "are still just trying to catch up with the first iPhone two years ago"
I think Mr. Cook fails to realize that even if his fancy phone is better, AT@T sucks enough to convince people to buy something else. - MyNameIsJoe, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2I'm guessing this part is for another phone. I looked through the ifixit teardowns and couldn't find a part similar to this on the iPhone. This must be for another phone the new Motorola Droid phone and Blackberry Storm have similar enough form factors.
- doctordbx, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2The problem with news is in Apple's content delivery model, YOU will have to pay for it, which will indeed make Rupert Murdoch VERY happy.
The challenge of course is taking something that is free now, and asking you to pay for it. - kashk5, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Actually, AT&T provides subsidized pricing 18 months into a two year contract. As such, releasing a fourth gen iPhone during Macworld 2010 would be perfectly fine as all the 3G owners who bought their iPhones the summer of 2008 would be eligible for the upgrade at the subsidized price.
- sourwookie, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Damn. I was hoping for a camera flash/assist light.
- boozedrinker, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1If they claimed it before and were correct, there really isn't any reason I shouldn't believe this.
- Bentleyk9, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1MacHG, not so much. The 3Gs came out a year after the 3G, not two. Therefore the 3Gs did not come out when the 3G's 2 year contracts were up. Hell, I still blazing the Internet on my 2G's Edge network and have a few months left in my original 2 year contact. I agree with you that the 4th Gen will not likely come out until the end of the first 3G contracts are up, but "this [did not] happen, roughly, with the 3Gs."
- kashk5, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2By 4G they mean fourth generation, not 4G network
- sierrabravo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1huh really
- stuffradio, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I have till March 2011 till I can get a phone at a subsidized price... stupid HUP (Hardware Upgrade Policy)
- thesportoflife, on 11/04/2009, -3/+4Look who the drone is. Droid fanboy and you haven't even used the phone yet.
- kefkaantakrist, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1PS Obviously just raising the subscription price does not increase the value of the content. But the higher you raise the price, assuming subscribers continue to pay, the more they seem to value your content, and the more likely they are to read and trust it.
- JoeRW, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2OLED Screen!
- Acidrain77, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Anyone know any rumours as to what they 4th gen will have compared to the 3GS?
- stuffradio, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I'm going to think about this for a while before I reply.
- alexdrod, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1A ton of stuff if they want to compete in a market that is really starting to put competition out finally.
- kefkaantakrist, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1On my Mac, there's this cool feature. I can plug in an Ethernet cord, then broadcast my internet connection via Airport, effectively making my Mac double as a router.
Now, is this something a PC CAN NOT do? I am sure that it is not - I am sure a PC could and can do it. But it was extremely easy to do it on a Mac. I just stumbled upon it one day while tinkering with my Mac.
Again, I am sure there's some way to do it on a PC, but in all my years I never stumbled upon it by accident, and I probably never thought of doing it so never sought out an app. Yet it is built right into Mac and it is trivial to do.
So it's not always about what it *can* do. Sometimes it is about *how* do you do it, how easy is it to do and how pleasant is the experience.
That's my 2 cents, but remember, I have 0 experience with the Droid, and only anecdotes about the other iPhone competitors (Pre, G1, etc.) from people who seem to be disappointed. - Charlotte_Web, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1The first iPhone was released in June, 2007. The problem with Apple releasing new iPhone models too frequently is that most of us current iPhone users are locked into two year contracts, so new models have to focus largely on new users to the platform.
Is there enough demand for Apple to put the iPhone on a six month refresh cycle rather than a one year cycle?
OR... I'll take a SWAG at it and say that they could be building up inventory for the release of the Verizon-enabled iPhone. If Apple were to release the Verizon iPhone, it would be a whole new market they would be tapping, and they would want to have a hefty inventory on hand for the launch. - VitriolAndAngst, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Apple is getting ready to become THE content deliverer for video and newspapers with iTunes.
So it only makes sense that they may jump the gun with a system that can get you entertainment anywhere in a form factor you want. What was it Steve Jobs said about never wanting a phone to play movies? - Charlotte_Web, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I dunno, I didn't see a hole for a flash... sadly.
- Bentleyk9, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I get the alternating years idea. That's nothing new. What I (still) don't quite get is: "i kind of doubt that the 4th rev of the iPhone will hit until the 2 year contracts of the 3G owners are up. This happened, roughly, with the 3Gs."
What are you referring to when you said "This happened"? I'm confused because it seems to me that "This happened" refers to "2 year contracts of the 3G owners are up," implying the 3Gs (3rd gen) served to replace the expiring 3G contacts. I don't understand why "happened" is past tense and what exactly happened.
It's not a big deal. I obviously just missed understood you. I completely agree with you on the whole alternating release thing. - kefkaantakrist, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1... $10 a year? For real, dawg? I'm pretty sure my town's paper is more than $10 a MONTH ($12.25/mo to be exact). Granted, that's probably barely enough to cover the cost of printing and delivery...
Anyway, the more you charge for the paper, the more it is perceived to be worth by the readers, and the more likely they are actually reading it, and that's a nice little claim to be able to make to your potential advertisers. Why would I want to put an ad in a free paper that everyone tosses directly into the trash? (My hometown has a free paper that is delivered to pretty much everyone's mail box, and pretty much everyone just tosses it right in the garbage. The Post Office garbage bin is full of them every time one comes out.)
On the other hand, in the age of the internet, there are better metrics for how many people are *ACTUALLY READING* the news, and more to the point, how many people are *ACTUALLY PAYING ATTENTION* to the ad. - Schwab, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Perhaps for a competing wireless carrier here in the US?
- tacojohn48, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1@Charlotte_ web - Your logic is spoiling my fun.
- doctordbx, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2His fancy phone only just caught up to the Nokias of 2 years ago.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1If you want quality content that reports NEWS, someone will have to pay for it.
Commercial TV and traditional newspapers, are more and more driven by their advertisers, or some corporate connection with interlocking directorates. You don't get reports on Corporate Crime anymore, or exposes on Monsanto's GM foods causing health problems.
So I very much welcome Apple as the new news distributor - and if you don't think that sort of pay model will work -- we shall see. But I think you underestimate the demand for REAL content that isn't re-hashed AP newswire garbage at a reasonable price.
I'd pay $10 bucks for a yearly subscription to a good news magazine and no trees would fall to do it. The Publisher, would likely make more with $6 a yearly subscription with no print and delivery costs than they do now.
Maybe some might start out free -- but I think that's a bad business model for a healthy industry -- Apple started the iPod and iPhone as a premium product, and they haven't chased the bottom dollar for some time -- they upgrade the product and avoid it becoming a commodity. - deslock, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I have yet to have anyone list something the iphone has that the latest android does not. Let's see if the 4G iphone can step it up.
meanwhile android:
free integrated turn by turn
maps overlays with live traffic, public transportation maps, etc.
compass/magnetometer was in android long before 3GS
widgets on desktop
background apps
tethering apps (without jailbreaking)
customized themes (without jailbreaking)
integrated social media with contacts
video capture was in android before 3GS
flash and 5mp+ cameras
heck... even having a desktop with folders and organization would be nice on iphone.
The Droid has twice the resolution and a larger screen.
Open GL support -- check
Ability to code apps without having to learn a new code language
Ability to code apps on any platform, not just an apple machine.
And yes, android does have multi-touch so don't try that card. android has virtual keyboard and physical. And the same crap apps on itunes exist on android except you get 80,000 more of farts and soundboards.
The Droid, even with a physical keyboard, is only 1mm thicker so it aint the thinness. - jtechs, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1is this it?
http://imgur.com/5S7Ijl.png - jtechs, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I was just at an internal meeting with Stevie (we call him that, he prefers it) and he announced some of the new features that will be given to the people in their next contract renewal. Although some features will change the way we work, we all felt that Stevie knows best and unilaterally agreed with his wise words. On reflection I feel somewhat superior and so I wish to bestow the same feeling onto you all.
finally here it is, http://imgur.com/5S7Ijl.png - Surkit, on 11/04/2009, -3/+34th iPhone? /yawn
- fluidfoundation, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1make it so.
- Velnich, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1That's possible, yes.
- cbeach, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1Why? They're unusable in sunlight!
- Velnich, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1I just assumed there would be a new iPhone this coming summer. I don't think there'll be a 4G phone though until LTE is settled.
- deslock, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1I have yet to have anyone list something the iphone has that the latest android does not.
Please enlighten me someone.

- jshhmr, on 11/04/2009, -9/+7Meh, Droid will finally take the piece of ***** iPhone out. Then again, Apple drones don't care about how good and inexpensive something is unless it has a picture of a ***** apple on it.
