    * There are plenty of iPhones on carriers other than AT&T.
    * There are no 'customers' to deal with here - just people having fun with technology _they_ own, not Apple or AT&T. Of course they're going to be at the 'power-user level' to do an unlock - if they're at all interested in unlocking their phone to run hackish 3rd party apps of course they're gonna be. Not many other people see the beauty in it.
    All in all, quit being a douche.

    No, it isn't. The only law relating to unlocking says that hacking a phone to unlock it is not illegal. There is no law that in any way disallows companies to keep their phones locked to the best of their ability.

  • MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't think it's going to cost people more money to use an iPhone with another carrier (as long as you don't have to go through contract cancelation hell), but what I'm having problems understanding is all the whining over what Apple did with the last update. Were ANY of you surprised that it killed all the unofficial 3rd party apps? Were ANY of you surprised that it didn't support unofficial SIM hacking (or otherwise) to use with another carrier BESIDES the one Apple is getting money from for each phone?
    I feel meh about the iPhone so I didn't buy one. But to hear the amount of bitching on digg (mostly from people who didn't even have an iPhone and just hate Apple for some psychotic reason) was ridiculous.

    But yea he did want third party apps, who doesn't. I was running 1.0.2 and while app tapp was cool, but there was nothing really there that made me not upgrade to 1.1.1. I mean third party apps were cool, but not as cool as the Wi-Fi music store. So when they get them running on 1.1.1, I am down again. If apple keeps giving me better reasons to upgrade every-time, I really don't care. (Or if really productive and awesome third party apps come out)

  • EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If you love the hacks than you love this. If you hate the hacks than you love this because it forces Apple to release a new firmware (or give up). Since Apple knows few people will update their firmware without new features, I'll assume new features are on their way.

    I bet Apple had hopped 1.1.1 would get them to 1.2.0 which I think is coming with Leopard. Perhaps a 1.1.9 will be a stripped down 1.2.0 and be released soon.

Despite the fact that Apple has added extra protections to SpringBoard and created a list of approved identifiers, iPhone hacker asap18 has managed to port several applications to the iPhone and gotten them to appear properly on the home screen
