Third Party Cocoa iPhone Apps Coming... "Soon"
macapper.com — During one of the many evening parties which took place during WWDC I overheard something very interesting from a key member of the iPhone development team that answers at least part of our question.
- 809 diggs
- digg it
- Chewie67, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33I know that will make a lot of people very happy.
Now, how about Flash support?- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -10/+5apple can't just add flash support, take it up with adobe.
- TomFrost, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6Do you seriously *want* flash support? I have a 1.5Ghz laptop with 512MB of ram. Flash, especially the heavier stuff, slows my browser down considerably. Imagine this on the iPhone's processor! Hell no, I'd rather my phone be responsive than have Flash.
- judgeFire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2QuickTime already does Flash playback to some extent, so there shouldn't be a problem in that. But I've understood that the video decoding is pretty processor intensive. The H.264 format now used by YouTube is more friendly to battery life.
- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4Learn Ajax until Adobe plays ball.
- willi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Ajax != Flash
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ajax and Flash don't are not interchangeable.
- ichibanjay, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I bet it'll be coming... Apple's website has a job listing for an iPhone Flash File Systems Engineer.... If that doesn't imply that it's going to happen, I don't know what would.
http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?BID=1&method=mExternal.showJob&RID=8053&CurrentPage=1- netkid91, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's for the iPhone's FILE SYSTEM or MMC/SD card support, not Adobe Flash!
- frozonecold, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36Flash support will probably come as an apple update. But I think Cocoa support is far more important than flash. Developers shall rejoice!
- mightytribble, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2My money is on NO flash support until there's a 3G iPhone. AT&T and Apple know flash-based media players will bring EDGE to its knees.
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It would have been nice to have Flash enabled only when you are on WiFi, but we don't know if the CPU is up to task.
- mightytribble, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2My money is on NO flash support until there's a 3G iPhone. AT&T and Apple know flash-based media players will bring EDGE to its knees.
- alexology, on 10/11/2007, -9/+26To be honest, it was probably some drunk fanboy...
- eybear, on 10/11/2007, -10/+13apple tends to hide key features and unveil them last minute as a surprise (cue battery life announcement and screen material change)
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+17Unsubstantiated BS. alexology is likely onto the real answer.
- wvaughan, on 10/11/2007, -14/+2If this is true, it will be the best news out of Apple in a VERY long time!
- kevinmotel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4better than intel chips? better than built in webcams? better than the iphone itself?
- unclemeat, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9Has the word 'soon' stopped meaning anything to anyone else?
- mrfeetio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7soon, use to mean something..... but then Duke Nukem forever was announced
- Lazyboy0172, on 10/11/2007, -2/+49so some guy at a party said real iphone 3rd party apps are coming? alright then.
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1LOL ˆ
- mrsteve007, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3Hey guess what, it may be coming soon, but this is already here!

It may not be as shiny as the iPhone, but it does quite a bit more for a whole lot less cash. I'm getting tired of all the iPhone FUD about it being so revolutionary.- lostboy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4you know what FUD stands for? Your use of it is inappropriate
- zeejay, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4FUD means "Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt." Not whatever you think it does.
Actually, that video you linked is designed to create iPhone FUD. But it fails. Miserably. The UI on that device looks like ass.
- tac0flicker, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3disinformation
- zephc, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1My pants just exploded. I hope this is true.
But then, wish in one hand and ***** in the other, and tell me which fills up faster.- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Depends on how often you *****. There's more sanitary ways to solve this than ***** in your hand.
- zephc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1It's meant to be illustrative - I'm not suggesting you actually ***** in your hands. I'll even spell it out for you: the ***** is a metaphor for something that's worthless, and the wishes are more worthless than the *****. Comprendez-vous?
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Depends on how often you *****. There's more sanitary ways to solve this than ***** in your hand.
- gbarger, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3That would take care of almost all of my concerns except 3G and GPS. The GPS isn't a big concern since I've never had that, but 3G would be nice. As far as everything else (flash included) with 3rd party development, we might soon start to see those problems being fixed. I hope I'll wait for the 2nd iteration to see if it has 3G. I'm so tempted to sell my iPod and small pocket camera and be an early adopter with this news.
- kitchung, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I think it'd be trivial for APPL to add serial profile to the bluetooth stack and we'll all just connect bt GPS to the phone. Simple answer. This goes same for the lack of A2DP; just a software fix *could* fix these problems.
- mightytribble, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I'm betting the 3G iPhone will arrive when they announce their European and Japanese launches. I can't see EDGE flying in Europe or Japan.
- netkid91, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Comon, GPRS should be enough for anyone! Who needs EDGE or 3G?
[/Sarcasm]
- netkid91, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Comon, GPRS should be enough for anyone! Who needs EDGE or 3G?
- network23, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4Forget Flash support since 1) it requires a hefty licence fee per phone and companies like SonyEricsson already told them to ***** off and 2) the mobile version is "Flash Light" and quite useless. Go for AJAX instead!
http://int.gov.mil.net.com.edu.org/ - judgeFire, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1There are many interesting things for both Apple and developers in this.
Third party applications could well be sold through the iTunes store, as the app already functions as the main interfacing method with the iPhone. For that, Apple would perhaps set up some sort of testing/certification program for developers, before the apps would be made available.
iTunes pages are already fully linkable, so a developer's 'download now' button could simply point there.
Now, how to test and build apps for the phone, well... tricky.- TomFrost, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"Apple would perhaps set up some sort of testing/certification program for developers, before the apps would be made available."
Please, please no. No more suggestions like this. If you own the phone, you should be able to do whatever you want with it. If you write software, then you should be able to do whatever you want with the software. It would be super nice of Apple to write in crash protection to the phone's copy of OS X to help with not bricking the phone if someone loads unstable software, but regardless, when you OWN the products, you should be able to use them in ANY way you see fit.
That whole certification thing is what Verizon does. It's horrible and it drives me freaking insane. THEY don't get to say what I can and can't do with MY phone, *I* do. - netkid91, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Let's NOT go the way BREW did that made me shun Sprint/Verizon for the rest of time!
- TomFrost, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"Apple would perhaps set up some sort of testing/certification program for developers, before the apps would be made available."
- Sticky_icky, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17If this took place at WWDC why didnt anybody post this right after WWDC?
- kelly, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Most people don't care about the lack of app development. The iPhone already comes with the apps most people need.
In response to your question... The reason why it didn't come up has more to do with people not care about that issue but later making it made known as a result of the iPhone detractors changing focus on reasons not to buy it. Believe me, if it weren't for this applications issue, there would be a different primary issue why they wouldn't buy an iphone.
Thats the way its always been with Apple products. If you don't see that, you either haven't been following Apple for very long or are too jaded by the anti Apple propaganda to see what's right in front of yours and everybody else's face.
- kelly, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Most people don't care about the lack of app development. The iPhone already comes with the apps most people need.
- donkeydrop, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Read more carefully; what's coming soon is Wifi not 3rd party apps.
- TomFrost, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I read that comment too, but seriously, doesn't that sound hokey to you? Jobs said during the announcement speech that Wifi would be on the phone. Why would anyone ask if it's "coming soon"? That doesn't even make sense. Sounds like a comment troll to me.
- lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10"Third party" probably doesn't mean everyone... it probably means Google, Electronic Arts, and those few companies that write games exclusively for cellphones. The rest of us are probably not "worthy" of development tools... These limitations would fit perfectly into Apple's "embrace and control" agenda...
- f8tbrautmehere, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1@mrsteve007
That video was amazing!
I mean that it was amazing in the way someone masks a slap in the face with a backhanded compliment kind of way.
What is it with all the anti-iPhone posts? If you don't want it, or like it, then don't buy it or comment on the stories. I think I understand you though, because "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish things. What? It's Corinthians one, chapter thirteen verse eleven. "
That means, grow the ***** up. - flaminio, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Are you kidding me? Someone overheard someone who probably knows nothing at a party that took place two weeks ago? Sounds like someone is digging deep for iPhone Week.
- etx313, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1I call BS. This is just apple marketing.
- chazuk, on 10/11/2007, -8/+17I was there and I overheard that steve jobs has a 15 inch ***** and ejaculates gold when he makes love.
Must be true.......- zdiggler, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Lol.. Apple Juice.
- d00d, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I overheard at that same party they're working on a new version of Steve jobs that features a 17 inch *****
- zdiggler, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Lol.. Apple Juice.
- etandrib, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1A comment on the page says:
"Interesting I was there too. In fact I was standing just behind your right shoulder. The “Yeah. There will be.” was in fact directed at someone who was creeping behind my right shoulder and asked “Will there be wifi support.”
Sorry to burst your bubble like that."
I trust the guy commenting more than this story. Buried as inaccurate. Until Apple posts a News story and an actual SDK I won't believe it. - ktan91, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0Anyone know how much money I need to bring to the Cingular/AT&T/Apple store to buy a iPhone? And what info I need? I'm on a family share plan and my 2 year contract is over. Hope someone knows. Thanks!
- DCstewieG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't see why you'd need to bring anything more than a credit card.
- ktan91, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0When they say activate it at home I hope it's like Walk in. Get it. Pay. Walk out. No need to see papers... pay anything extra.. just go home and set up a 2 year contract.
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Riiiiiiiiiiight, because the "engineer" "diligently declined every invitation" to show the actual device (which in real-people terms means he doesn't even have one) but willingly divulges NDA-like information regarding future development on said device? If it doesn't make sense, it's not true.
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Can we all agree that Apple /usually/ doesn't announce or release things until they're pretty much ready for mass consumption? And that an SDK with documentation doesn't just bloom from the womb? And that there's more to building an incredible new device than just saying you're going to do it? If yes, then please give it a bit of a rest.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3*sigh* Another Apple fanboy's wet dream on Digg...when will it end?
- jimbochicago, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The strategy we're doing is to take as much from the style sheets in Safari to at least *look* more native. It's frustrating, because we do have an actual app that supports GPS, but in the browser, we've had to get around it by putting in a bunch of ways to set location (drop-downs of cities, address, intersection, etc.) Java would certainly have helped, but as Tony Soprano used to say, Whaddyagonnado?"

Note: This won't *look* iPhone-ish unless you're using the iPhone's browser. So here's a sneak bonus for making Firefox fake like the iPhone browser:
Type "about:config" into Firefox's url bar.
Then, in the filter bar, type "agent", and look for "general.useragent.override" Double click on this.
In the input box, paste this string for the iPhone user agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML,like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A538a Safari/419.3
Click "OK". A new bold line will be there with that user agent.
