- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Huh? What does that mean?
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I have Leopard right now, its as damn sweet as it looks, trust me. Spaces is cool, that new web widget is very cool, Ive got it setup to show me the top 3 stories on digg, not to mention time machine looks awesome, I only have a few days worth of windows but its very cool...if anyone has a question just ask and ill try and reply.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Wow, Automator 2 looks amazing! As brilliant Automator 1 was, it would begin to slow down after a period of use, then you'd have to restart it.
I'm almost 100% sure that they are working on a new finder. Everything is switching out of the brushed metal design into the gradient metal. Finder has yet to be gradientified and is the only thing that really hasn't seen a change, so I'm guessing one of those "top secret" secrets they kept from us at the dev conference. Same with iCal. - chadu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13if anyone feels the need to ditch the brushed metal look from Tiger early. Try UNO. It does a great job of unifying your OS and Apple app looks. interacto.net (not my site, i just like the app)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It seems noone has noticed one "feature" of Leopard (well, not that it's particularly groundbreaking, or even that much important but) I'm pretty pleased about - Dashboard doesn't spawn a new process for each widget; all widgets run inside a single DashboardClient process. Oh, and it's teh snappier.
- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Its amazing what google can do for you
http://www.xvsxp.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Are you by any chance totally *****' retarded?
I'm using the developer preview of Leopard as I type this and it looks exactly the same as the screenshots at ThinkSecret and exactly the same as in the Stevenote screen capture shown on the damn spam of a site you've linked to.
All that crying "fake, fake!" obviously has fried a circuit in there somewhere. - kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@GhengisKhan
Then don't buy it. It's totally up to you.
Personally, I like the idea of an always-on backup system, multiple desktops, custom web-clipping widgets, and, the thing I'm most psyched for: XCode 3.0 w/ dtrace.
Then again, discussing the value of a pre-beta OS (notice the "developer" part of "developer preview") is kinda pointless anyways, since you don't know what features will come, or how the existing ones will be changed.
As of right now, mainly because of the dev. tools, it's worth $130 for me, but I can see how you might not be ready to buy it yet.
-kethraal - MixedSpleens, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7$129 or $69 with education market discount, as long as it stays the same as tiger
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6my parent's iMac is quicker in OSX than OS9...
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"the newly-surfacing mac viruses are proving that."
Got any links where I can read about these newly surfacing viruses? I was unaware that there were any. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For starters, Windows is an operating system and Mac is a computer. The Apple website has a lot of info for people considering switching.
http://www.apple.com/getamac/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Not trying to pick a fight here, this is honest to god question - what feature (or set of features) is worth $130 to you?
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How exactly did they copy Microsoft?
Instant Search-No.
RSS in the web browser-No.
A good-looking interface-Definitely not (OK, the Aqua has some wrinkles, but...)
A versioning system that the user knows it's there ("Knows" is the operative word)-Who the hell knew Volume Shadow Copies were in Windows Server 2003 before the Anti-Mac Windowsites said so? - halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16You're confusing Apple with Microsoft.
It's Microsoft that has constantly promised features in their next OS release, only to drop them shortly after the news of the features had caused a big splash.
Metadata in the file system for example, is one feature Microsoft dropped from Vista (Before they were even calling it Vista)
The file system was supposed to be a relational database, offering unparalleled search-ability, but they dropped that feature, as it was too complex to implement in time for their 2005 release date.
Of course it got delayed again and again for other reasons, so that the idea of a 2005 release date is, well, laughable.
Even then, I doubt the features were "fake." They were clearly more than Microsoft could implement in the time frame, but I'd be inclined to suspect they actually intended to include those features, as opposed to the conspiracy theorist vision of an evil corporation promising outlandish features for the purpose of killing off competitors with the mere threat of a Microsoft version of X functionality. - ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5VyRuZ - there are no mac viruses - Symantec admitted as much. That doesn' mean "be reckless", it just means you're safer.
Also - you must be lucky wrt drivers. Try a clean install of XP on a laptop (from non-manufacturer's disks). Also, I love how most PCs come with adware/spyware/popups built in. - Kajico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@rodrigo
how many people do you know that disabled Dashboard? everyone I know uses it on a day to day basis, I use it all the time.
Top 10 Dashboard apps I use day in day out:
Calendar
Screenshot Plus
iStat Pro
Calculator
WeatherBug
Dictionary
Unit Converter
Php Cheat Sheet
CSS Cheat Sheet
I see no novelty at all in these utilities, they've become integral in my workflow. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's been my experience that every new release of OS X since Jaguar (10.2) has made whatever Mac I installed it in run faster. Plus being able to install it on any Mac I own for one cost is great as well. I'll most likely wait a few weeks after it's released for the first bug fix.
- pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3130$ is more or less one, one and a half hour worth of work. If I can retrieve ONE document that I spent more than an hour working on, it has paid for itself.
Any more questions? - Barr08, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The new grid spacing feature is awesome! The wide grid apple uses by default for the icons on the desktop has annoyed me for years.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just hope it works nice in my poor Mac Mini...
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That sounds about right. Printer drivers in OS X 10.4 take up about 1.5GB. Apple includes printer drivers for so many mainstream models it's silly. At 2GB it appears that they are adding even more. That's how things can work out of the box. ;) When running low on space the excess printer drivers are always first to go for me.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Adjustable grid spacing! FINALLY!
I've been waiting for this to come back for so long! - ripcord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If they were creating a Brand New Finder(tm), why would we be seeing incremental updates in the Leopard Finder, like the changes to the "Trash" folder and grid size shown in the Think Secret article? To throw us off the track? Apple development doesn't have spare resources to waste like that.
I'm not saying that we're not going to see some more changes to the Finder between now and Leopard release (maybe even some substantial changes?), but I think any talk of a re-written, brand-new finder is just nonsense. They're sticking with the Dock, they're sticking with the Finder. We're going to see incremental changes only in Leopard, the question is how large is the increment going to be?
Maybe we'll see a replacement in 10.6. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7That's not just stupid, that's Teletubbies stupid!
- brutan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Has anyone else noticed the space required to install the printer drivers? (first image) 2 GB, WTF?? Why would anyone want to throw away that much space on printer drivers? Does this seem unusually large to anyone other than me?
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The phones came with their own USB cables and driver Cd's..."
Notice the part with "driver Cd's" in it. It's not somehow better just because it comes on a CD and you don't have to google for it. It's still another 3rd party driver to load on. - bmobile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i agree. i always thought the mac grid was way too large. cant wait for this release!
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use an application called Amnesty which allows me to convert my Dashboard Widgets into double-clickable applications.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22226
Its fantastic as i can keep my BBC radio widget (or any other widget) open all the time, but i dont have the overhead of running Dashboard. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This may be off topic a little, but does anyone know what the cost will be for Leopard? Should I wait to buy a mac until Leopard comes pre-installed?
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Who the hell knew Volume Shadow Copies were in Windows Server 2003 before the Anti-Mac Windowsites said so?"
Who cares? I can't name a single home user who uses Windows Server 2003 in the first place. I can't imagine my grandmother wrangling with VSC and typing in a reason every time she reboots. - Lardquake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Meh. Sarcasm takes talent. :P
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@DaffyDuck; Maybe he's contemplating the concept of reality in itself. As in stating, "Yet somehow, even if those pictures did exist within the dimention we percieve as 'reality', they'd probably still be doctored to display non-accurate information".
:-) - hexix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I agree. I'm having a very hard time getting excited over what I see here. Looks like the same stuff I already have. Although there are tabs in iChat that take up way more space than they need to... I guess that's cool.
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Im running the developer preview as well, i havent found an app that i had in 10.4 that wont work here so its not bad for day to day use.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, actually I've come across two "bugs" so far, but they are nothing major; at least those won't stop me from using Leopard full time for now.
For one, i have a problem ejecting CDs, DVDs, and DMGs. It looks like Spotlight is indexing them, but for some reason fails to release them afterwards. This is surely to be fixed as soon as the next developer beta build.
Secondly, Leopard messes up NetNewsWire. The app crashes the second time it is launched, during the loading of the subscriptions plist. My guess is that this is due to a workaround for a bug in the XML framework, that's been fixed in Leopard. If you don't quit the app, as I generally do, there is absolutely zero problem. (And if you happen to quit NNW for some reason, you just move the plist file out of the Application Support folder, start NNW, quit it again, move the subscriptions plist back, overwriting the newly created one, and start NNW yet again, and you're done.) - Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Back up your argument with any evidence of this and I wouldn't have modded you down. Until you make a better case, you are just trolling.
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That can't be right. Remember this is still in development....
- gregulate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice!
I'm glad to see OS X is unifying a lot more programs by dropping the brushed metal look, but I can't figure out why they just wont do it for Safari and Finder.
Grid spacing, and the unique trash are some cool new features too. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24.63 gb is a dvd size burn the one released on the 11th should be it.
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've set up WebDAV on my Mac so I can share iCal calendars over my network. We've got three macs all pulling the same calendars now. For a family or office, this is very convenient. However, as things stand now only one computer can edit the calendar. This means that when my daughter gets a new gig she can't just update the shared calendar from her mac. She's got to tell me to do it which she usually never does. iCal3 would allow her to be given permission to change the calendar on the network making my job so much easier while making the calendar more interactive for subscribers.
I'm pretty excited about getting that added functionality. That's one of the features that has me more than willing to shell out $129 when the time comes. - tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I, for one don't really ever use the dashboard. I load it up 1 time every 2 weeks for some reason and then realize I don't use it, so I kill it.
- xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In Interface Builder it literally takes .5 seconds to switch from brushed metal to the unified look and feel (what he calls gradientified.)
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Psst.
That article was sarcasm. - smackfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a bit crazy, but I assume they include them on pre-installed systems so that almost any printer works flawlessly without needing to find drivers. ...and if you're including them on pre-installs, you might as well include them in the default install from DVD.
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh dear... and I was hoping they'd at least reduce the fancyness in Windows Vista to be finally sleek, fast and usable... but noo...
- smackfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, $129 is a lot to some people.
- barrald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1indeed, it begs the question of all of us:
what is real? how do you define real? If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain... - dfunct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I figured that, but that said I couldn't get it to go any further than it just sitting at the boot screen (the one with the grey apple and the spinny bit, but with out the spinny bit)
- Lardquake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By all accounts it should be much faster than Tiger. Just throw as much memory at it as you can afford.
