- ravitek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+96Are there 39 ipods in your pants or are you just happy to see me?
- hellbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59Thank you, Mr. Jobs! 52% smaller packaging sure helped!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+64this reminds me of last year when I would scalp 360s on ebay.
After I bought it at the video game counter, I would walk out the front door with 4 360s. The beeper thing would go off, I could easily have been stealing them as they would have no idea if I had bought for them or not. I would keep on walking and nobody would even check my receipt or try to stop me.
Of course I am white, if I was black I am sure they would have acted differently as I live near detroit (no offense, probably the truth) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52Your name is STEAL APPS
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39no..... I was lying. I was looking for Pokemon cards..... DONT BEAT ME UP!
- indicas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Actual story:
http://www.abc4.com/local_news/local_headlines/story.aspx?content_id=F1C76411-A9B5-45FC-BDBA-F94D04408137 - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Why would police scratch their heads at this? It's an old old trick in shoplifting. Hell, I saw this show on T.V. where they interviewed a guy who used to do this with records (and later CD's). Used to stuff hundreds of them down his pants and simply walk out. I remember how funny it was because he was lamenting that when they first came out with CD's he couldn't stuff as many CD albums as he could records because they were harder to keep straight. When stores started putting them in those "security" cases that made them taller it simply made his theft that much easier.
After that show aired, an old friend of mine started to practice doing the same exact thing. He couldn't match what the guy, I mentioned above, did in sheer volume though. Instead, during the genie pants craze, he stitched pouches to the inside, then fill them with what he wanted (clothes, games, CD's, whatever). He got away with it for a long time as he got better and better.
He eventually got really greedy and got caught for faking employee pay checks around the city. He figured out where businesses would keep their blank employee checks, either lift them or pay a disgruntled employee to lift them, then he would fill them in with his own dollar amounts. Problem was, every business check he stole were meant to be printed on computer, not hand written with ink. When a bank teller noticed the discrepancy, she stalled him while the police was called. Go figure. - fleischner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Here in Massachusetts, the Boston mayor created a "gun buy-back" program, in which people who turned in guns (no questions asked) got a $200 gift card to... Target.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Target is a joke. I was looking for some baseball cards a while ago, IN THE CHECKOUT LINE, and there were some 40+ opened packs of Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Nothing was inside the packets.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23that is so cool, I never realized duggmirror checked the referring story and automatically provided a mirror
...but duggmirror has not mirred it, oh well - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@hammydude
No offense taken, because it's true.
Heck, just last Sunday I was in Best Buy to pick-up two pairs of speakers (I'm upgrading the home theater and I've spent about 3k there in the last week). I'm walking out of the store with the speakers with the manager right next to me. The guy at the front door is in panic mode even after the manager told him that I'm ok and she's the one that rung up my purchase (actually it was a store pick-up ordered off the website). He kept wanting to stop me to ask for a receipt even though I had huge boxes under both arms and manger vouching for me.
(how much for the makeup job they did on Eddie Murphy back in the 80's on SNL, and that TV show Black / White from a few months ago? I want to know how it feels not to be a suspect for just one day). - dilbertmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12First off, props to Target security (both at the site that was robbed and at the site that saw them!).
But more importantly, how did they get to the goods? I thought these were in a secured case, so did they have a key or break the glass? And how was it possible for them to do this, undetected, at the rate of 3 iPods/games per second? Sure doesn't sound like they were stuffing them in pockets.
Someone want to spell this out for me? - saether, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@kevnaca:
Like they do at Fry's and Homedepot? I just walk by them as I don't need them to check my bag for "my own good". They like to say it is to prevent me from being over charged. - meepus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, they don't have any right to search you if you're leaving the property. Law enforcement officers are a different story. Just threaten lawsuit if they come too close, and most store security officers will leave you the hell alone. If they don't, you really CAN sue them.
- hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9didn't they get caught...
- ogre2112, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@floridiot
rofl. thinking the same thing - Abatrour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I see you didn't read the article. The title was wrong. It was PS2 games.
- ModestMoby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Globalized "more for your dollar" retail is getting out of control. This is just another example--quantity over quality. Walmart has so many customers that its more efficient to simply not prosecute shoplifters than to do so, especially taking into account a society so preoccupied with lawsuits that a criminal can sue the victim for getting hurt on their property.
Walmart doesn't prosecute for shoplifting anything under 25 dollars, this caused so many problems in my small, home town. People would steal something and return it (they no longer require receipts for returns! wtf?!), and use the money to buy drugs that people sold in the very same parking lot. Instead of personal responsiblity (honestly...keep the freaking receipt when you buy something) these companies have so much money that they can just write such things off.
My father is a manager for Loew's (which is ironic--I hate large corporations, and yet one is partially helping pay for the college degree I'm working on...) and just a few weeks ago he was telling me how a customer bought a thousand dollar grill, put it in the back of their pick-up truck, and drove off without securing it. When the grill immediately fell out the customer threatened to sue Loew's for not telling him to properly take the grill home, thus they instantly gave him a brand new grill for no charge what so ever.
Walmart, Target, McDonald's...they're slowly reshaping our social values to a level of expectation somewhere below mediocre. - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@hammydude
An easy solution is to have the greeters or a couple employees do what Costco does when you leave. Just check the receipt as people go out the door. They can espcially do it during the console releases. - Farmer77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I doubt any of those theives ever worked in retail chains before because they would have known that if there was a big robbery, their mugs would be distributed to the other stores pretty quickly, with their pictures pinned in the employee break room so it would've been a matter of time before they get caught.
I find it hilarious these guys flew all the way to Utah probably thinking that Utah people are soft or not alert on crime. Now they wasted money flying all the way from NY and they get put in the slammer. Haha - Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've been there when they change the display cases, they leave things like the glass Xbox 360 window just sitting open, then they wander off for 10-15min at a time. I'm sure you'd get caught by the cameras and the fact that the electronics are at the back of the store, but leaving the Xbox + >100 games just sitting open?
- Eccohawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's because target goes after the top 5 theft categories more than others. They hardly would notice or care about the occasional theft of Trading Cards. They care about DVD players, DVD movies, Electric Razors, Crest White Strips, and Nicotine Gum, straight up. That isn't to say you aren't gonna get busted for the other crap, but if you go after those, expect to get caught.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sometimes the only attacks/thefts your arent ready for, are the most simple and easy to over look. On serveral occasions i have ask a rep at a store to see something behind the glass counter, after holding "blah" item for a while, and standing there they will say " just come find me when your ready" and walk away with the glass wide open.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Where did he say nothing was done about it? He's just saying this story is nothing special, as stuff like this happense all the time
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ROFL @ the article...
like come on... how did you manage to get 39 ipods in your pants.. i dont care if its oversized its just crazy! - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Title should have been:
iPods: Gone in 15 Seconds - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You want to steal from target do it the right way, a friend of mine worked in the stock area he would dump whole pallets of stuff into his buddy's pickup truck every day at lunch time.
Seams that the mangers all go to lunch at the same time and one part of the loading dock is not covered by cameras. - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@foolfromhell: This is Magic the Gathering territory, bitch!
- TPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For the criminals, it's like the store had a bullseye painted on it or something.
- Sham3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"These tactics may be clever in New York, but not in Utah..."
haha - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"They like to say it is to prevent me from being over charged."
Sounds like a corruption of the concept of not having to raise prices to make up for lost revenue due to theft. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2target actually has face recognition software so the alarm would go off if it saw your ugly mug.
- Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but make sure he doesn't see you steal that copper cup, even after you boosted 50000 other things, otherwise you have imperial guards chasing your ass EVERYWHERE..
~Soniti - krellor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8@steal_apps01
Personally I don't condone stealing because I find it immoral. But there are worse things in the world, and harder things to live with. You've probably made some mistakes, treated someone badly, etc... So get off your high horse and in the real world before you try judging others. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am so pro at Digimon.
- Darkshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is how you theif in Oblivion.
Get the shopkeep to look the other way and *clickclickclickclick* you steal 50 items and leave. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ ultimathule
What the heck are you talking about?!
Hmm, lets see, what have I done in my past...
Oh, yeah, college degree, great job, great paying job, no kids, no illegitimate kids, owned 2 houses before age 30 (one was being rented out), no debt, great credit, lost over 80 pounds in the last 8 months, exercise almost every day, normally average 50 - 120 miles a week on my bicycle, give generously to charities, I have a financial plan that I've setup that includes: long term savings, mid to long term savings, local cash reserves, and cash reserves that sit at the bank that I use to pay all my regular bills which has the checking account / debit card that was used to pay for the home theater upgrade (only $100.00 came out of the reserve for this account, all the rest was money that was left over after bills were paid).
... explain to me what you think the problem is again. this time type really slow so I can understand... - misterjangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fine upstanding friend you got there LP. Hang onto that one!
- ogre2112, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People still play that?
- kidko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@kevnaca:
That would probobly be both the best, and the only thing that they could do to retain security. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2is stealing apps really stealing?? were in a grey area here... its not like the company is losing out on production cost :P insert sarcazm here and here.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was wondering if the sheer number of tags made the security sensors think it was a malfunction and not operate.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are supposed to be locked up, but I have seen coworkers leave the keys sitting in the locks and forget they were there. I would find them 15 minutes later, still in the locks.
- cathars1s, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5yes, being mean to someone is the equivalent of stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise. Right.
- halfnormalform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So when is everyone who doesn't like the corporate stores going to be starting their own socially friendly stores?
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -3/+4"They had one look out down the aisle, and a driver in the getaway car," said Riverdale detective Bill Fuchs. "What's amazing is that he did it in fifteen seconds."
HAHAHA...dectectie bill fuchs...HAHA....he thought he was the only who was done in 15 seconds. - kidko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow. That's just crazy. I mean, yeah, like suMMx said, this kind of thing happens every day (the robbery part). But to have it happen in only 15 seconds? That's barely enough time to run out the exit. Another interesting thing is looking at the full story (thanks, indicas), the theives walked out WITHOUT SETTING OFF THE ALARM. Target's going to have some major problems if they keep this up.
- XFLOP20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if Fuchs is pronounced "*****".
- Insimbi, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8It's not retarded - what's retarded is saying "It happens everyday - let's not do a damn thing about it" I'm glad they caught the bastards. Sounds like the CC you worked at was pretty lame if nothing was ever done about it.
- Esikiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What I wonder is if the time he walked to the ipods is taken into account.
If he ran for the 15 seconds in and out of building I would find that amusing and suspicious -
