so it is exlusive to only iTunes
...for 2 months
There is no way that an album could be iTunes only and be a hit. Too many Cd buyers.- Cwo655321, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3gotta agree with you on the number of cd buyers, but i'll still be dusting off my itunes account on the 15th :)
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16And I'm thankful for this clarification, because if it had really been and remained iTunes-only, it would have been the first TMBG album I didn't purchase.
- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6@ saska
I wouldn't have purchased it either. I'm not going to pay for lossless DRM. - ideapower, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6they're not exactly the "hit" kind of band, anyway, but they were actually the first band to release an album exclusively on an online service when they released "Long Tall Weekend" on Emusic several years ago. anyway, this is not really an "exclusive" release if it's coming out on CD later... but i guess that's just mincing words.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@sirpocksalot: Yes.
- coldfirenj, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I don't know man they are a real tight band.
- playthev, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3ive never heard of this band :(
- RamboJesus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Ok.
So I will never use Itunes.. personally. You can do whatever the hell you want.
So because of this if I really want to hear this cd I will have to download a version with the drm cracked.
Then once I have a non DRM version downloaded I'm going to buy a copy... when I already have it?
Lame.- LordSpam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You can always buy it on iTunes, burn it to CD and then rip it back to your computer sans copy protection. I don't do this often, but I have in the past. Since most of my listening happens on an iPod anyway I don't usually bother.
- seasleepy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, the physical album *is* going to come with a bonus CD, so, you know, there's some incentive there even if you've downloaded (from iTunes or wherever).
I'm a CD person anyway, so I'll tide myself over for the extra couple of months with the podcasts ( http://tmbg.com/temp_site/podcast.htm ) and things ( http://tmbg.com/temp_site/mp3.htm ). - chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Odds are, their album will be DRM-free..after all, many indie labels (and EMI) are switching to DRM-free AAC files on iTunes in May.
- elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Or you could download it. It leaked like 2 days ago.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Ripping off a small-time band like TMBG is particularly immoral. Buy their stuff: it's affordable! It's also what you'd probably want if you were capable of pulling together a polished album of your own songs.
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2So, sharing something enjoyable with your friends and neighbors, even when the legal channels flat-out refuse to sell it to you in anything but a lossy, possibly DRM'd format for months, is "particularly immoral?" This must be some new sort of sharing I'd never heard of...
- mailman-zero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have downloaded the last 4 albums of theirs when they appeared online early. I always buy them the day they come out anyway. I am also able to get other people to do the same by letting friends listen to it ahead of time. This gets them excited for the release!
- tkerwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The physical release in July will have a bonus disk with a bunch more stuff in it, giving people incentive to buy the CD too.
- kkring24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It would be more interesting to see what would happen if a bigger named artist tried to do this. Don't get me wrong, I love TMBG, but they aren't exactly the biggest band in the world
- openaddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They Might Be...!
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Barenaked Ladies did this a year or two ago with the "Everything for Everyone" album - it was available on iTunes a few weeks before the physical release. But then BNL has always been forward thinking, they currently sell whole albums online in FLAC and MP3, and also recordings from most concerts the same way...
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't know but I loved Istanbul "Not Constantinople" and "Birdhouse in your soul"
- Spacecow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2As much as I love TMBG, this isn't really newsworthy. Anyone remember when Harvey Danger (one hit wonder with "Flagpole Sitta," and an awesome band besides) released Little By Little for free through Bittorrent? http://harveydanger.com/downloads/
BTW, The Else is their best work in over 10 years (since Factory Showroom). Thank god they're out of their slump.- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pity the Harvey Danger album wasn't very good. I got it (actually, as a straight download zip file from their site, I believe) and it was decidedly "eh."
Of course, this is all opinion and some may love it.

- MattB123, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Interesting concept, but I hate iTunes. Too much to lock you into Apple hardware involved.
And LordSpam, I wouldn't do that unless it was lossless. Otherwise you get the "cascading codecs" effect if you rip and encode the CD again (like to mp3).- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Too much lockin?
They will probably take advantage of Apple's new DRM free offering, and with the open AAC files you can then download you could play the music on a Zune or 360 if you liked. Where's the lockin?
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Too much lockin?
- stupergenius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe it will be released as one of them new non-DRMed songs. Considering TMBG's past and their Internet releases it could be a possibility, but I dunno what their record company is like.
- spokenrope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Good to see some They Might Be Giants news on the Digg front page. I've not really liked their stuff that's come out after Mink Car, but I'm certainly going to check this out.
- SouthsideIrish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmm...might it be possible that you will be buying it without copy protection? Apple is rolling that out this month, and TMBG is artist owned an operated.
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2TMBG is no stranger to online releases of music/albums. I remember buying Long Tall Weekend on Emusic. 15 tracks of unDRM'd mp3 glory.
Hopefully they'll offer it without DRM and at a decent price ($0.99 for an unprotected song would be amazing). I might actually install itunes then. - kevthecatslayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Long Tall Weekend was the first online only album for sale on the internet.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Have there been any online-only albums that _haven't_ been for sale on the Internet?

- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3All I know is WTF ever happened to TACO...
The only song he ever did was "Putting on the Ritz" Which was EXXcelllent by the way... - LostInEuphoria, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1i'm so sick of the itunes monopoly
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah me too. Sure wish there was some other online music store that I could purchase digital music from...

- solemnraven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11i ♥ TMBG
- Noctem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If it were non-DRM content via iTunes, I'd consider it (And even then it's still a big maybe. I don't really like i Tunes that much). Otherwise I'll just wait until the CD is released - I've got no problem supporting one of my top 3 favorite bands.
- tuzy2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2And I'm going to see them in concert tomorrow night in Charlottesville VA. WOOT!!!
- zackkitzmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7iTunes + BitTorrent Exclusive?

But really I'm not actually your friend
But I am.
- liberaldigger, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2They Might Be Giants sucks ass
- MadScientist420, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2.....and no one cares.
- SouthsideIrish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5May 15th is a Tuesday, right?
Prediction. May 15th will be the day Apple updates the iTunes Store and releases the new TMBG album and the EMI catalog without any DRM.- MotorOn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Apparently not...
Unfortunately.
I now want it to be July 10th so that i can get the bonus CD.
If you haven't heard the else, it's their best yet - get it.
- MotorOn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Apparently not...
- SteveCUBE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I know that when I buy the CD I'm getting better quality and more freedom in terms of encoding and use. So I'm not that upset LOL.
I still buy CDs and vinyl, better than that crap quality on iTunes. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If they release the album as non-DRM files, then it won't be exclusive to iTunes, they could effectively say its a BitTorrent exclusive.
- ontheplains, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1sellouts.
- TheNivek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I completely disagree with you there. Although I have an extremely biased opinion (I've been a TMBG fan for a LOOOONG time) they have always been a good band about not selling out. They have been giving away free mp3s for several years, run a podcast that is usually about half an hour of music ( thats almost an entire cd's worth of music, every month!) have their "clock radio", and Dial-A-Song, so I think them releasing their new cd early on iTunes isn't really "selling out" as much as making it available sooner.
its nice to see so many TMBG fans on digg! - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here's a number for you to call and complain to:

http://theymightbegiants.com/ - robinator08, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Glad I've already downloaded it.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We hate you too.
- steamedlice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't like these guys. They are just too whiny. I used to like 1 song way back when they were a young band, but not now.
- mowgli2001, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Are these guys still popular? wow, it really goes to show how people just can't let go. These guys aren't mainstream and that is the basis of my comments. Feel free to hate...
