They Might Be Giants’ new album “The Else” to be iTunes exclusive

    There is no way that an album could be iTunes only and be a hit. Too many Cd buyers.

    • ideapower, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6they're not exactly the "hit" kind of band, anyway, but they were actually the first band to release an album exclusively on an online service when they released "Long Tall Weekend" on Emusic several years ago. anyway, this is not really an "exclusive" release if it's coming out on CD later... but i guess that's just mincing words.

    So because of this if I really want to hear this cd I will have to download a version with the drm cracked.
    Then once I have a non DRM version downloaded I'm going to buy a copy... when I already have it?

    • LordSpam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You can always buy it on iTunes, burn it to CD and then rip it back to your computer sans copy protection. I don't do this often, but I have in the past. Since most of my listening happens on an iPod anyway I don't usually bother.
    • seasleepy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, the physical album *is* going to come with a bonus CD, so, you know, there's some incentive there even if you've downloaded (from iTunes or wherever).

I am also able to get other people to do the same by letting friends listen to it ahead of time. This gets them excited for the release!

But then BNL has always been forward thinking, they currently sell whole albums online in FLAC and MP3, and also recordings from most concerts the same way...

    BTW, The Else is their best work in over 10 years (since Factory Showroom). Thank god they're out of their slump.

      Of course, this is all opinion and some may love it.

    And LordSpam, I wouldn't do that unless it was lossless. Otherwise you get the "cascading codecs" effect if you rip and encode the CD again (like to mp3).

      They will probably take advantage of Apple's new DRM free offering, and with the open AAC files you can then download you could play the music on a Zune or 360 if you liked. Where's the lockin?

      Hopefully they'll offer it without DRM and at a decent price ($0.99 for an unprotected song would be amazing). I might actually install itunes then.

    I still buy CDs and vinyl, better than that crap quality on iTunes.

Although I have an extremely biased opinion (I've been a TMBG fan for a LOOOONG time) they have always been a good band about not selling out. They have been giving away free mp3s for several years, run a podcast that is usually about half an hour of music ( thats almost an entire cd's worth of music, every month!) have their "clock radio", and Dial-A-Song, so I think them releasing their new cd early on iTunes isn't really "selling out" as much as making it available sooner.
