- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Without reading the article I know what App finally pushed him over the edge to write it, and it begins with "d".
p.s. I like AppZapper because it's both useful and fun. - Sarki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I think MyDreamApp really is the cause of all the complaining, but I can't help but thing that ANYTHING that makes people more interested in independent, small developer applications is a good thing.
And call me a dirty whore, but CoverFlow and its kind while flashy, is still awesome. - EnsErmac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10This isn't just an OSX fad, look at all the press Songbird got before ever releasing a version…
- mouthster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Smoke-ware.
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Disco is a funny thing because all the functionality it has it built right into OS X for free and can be found in Disk Utility.

Good one afruff, I laughed so hard I cried! - spartyboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The mac app hype machine has been a bit unwieldy, but generally I find the freeware/shareware community in MUCH better shape than on the PC side.
I can't imagine PC forums arguing over smoke in a Windows shareware app. - spartyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wasn't advocating unnecessary eye candy, just making the point that both users and developers are more engaged on the Mac side. My favorite indie apps do one thing and do it well. No, I don't need my apps shrouded in smoke or surrounded by dancing hamsters.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4AppZapper had free upgrades for life, while Disco... is one of 'those' apps.

I know that doesn't sound fun, but either does going in to a room with loads of people, nobody talking, and you sit there a watch a big screen for about 2 hours, but I promise you that can be great fun.
It does exactly what it's meant to, and does it in a slick and quick way, with a few different features it works seemlessly, and looks and sounds good too. Besides I got it for :) - BabyBlueShoes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Hypeware. Not to mention AbandonWare. I'm sure iClip 4 will be grovy when the graphic artist finally finishes it since it was annouced 18 months ago.
I wouldn't buy any of these new 'smoke and mirrors' gui licious apps. These are made by kids that will drop support and never make a 2.0 because there they've been distracted by the next best thing. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Disco is so young and there is so much more they can add if they really do want to rival Toast (video burning, nuff said). Things they might add are not trivial, so if they do it properly they might really deserve the upgrade cost, and I might consider buying it if it can ever compete with Toast.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I'm also a bit concerned by the "Delicious generation" name, I think Delicious Library is a nice, innovative and useful application, and I would never compare it to Disco or the relatively crappy stuff that came out of MyDreamApp."
I was thinking the same thing. Delicious Library had an elegant functional UI. I wouldn't compare non-functional smoke to an elegant UI just because they're both pretty. Delicious Library had reason behind it's nice looking UI. Stuff like Disco just throws in stuff for the hell of it. I don't think Delicious Monster would take too kindly to this group applying this name to themselves, but maybe Wil Shipley will be an advocate for this new fad. Hard to say. He's crazy like that. - flernk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why would anyone around here think the hype is BAD? Sometimes the hype doesn't deliver, yes, I'll give you that. But every major movement of the modern marketing era started with healthy hype. From cars to shoes to toothpaste to scented candles, every market benefits from hype.
If the hype these days is great looking and streamlined software, all the better for us! Sure some companies will fail and others will under-deliver, but, for heaven's sake, it's about time software got some industry-shaking hype for cool software! - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i predict none of the above.
its automator that is the long term winner. while it isn't quite ready for everyone... a little more development is going to make it possible for any mac user to produce very nice applications. you already can already do it with a little knowledge. - matgorb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some stuff are useful, some are not.
AppZapper is simple and efficient
Disco is just well… useless
I'm also a bit concerned by the "Delicious generation" name, I think Delicious Library is a nice, innovative and useful application, and I would never compare it to Disco or the relatively crappy stuff that came out of MyDreamApp. - toddtmw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Paul & the gang has dubbed the new generation of Mac developers the "Delicious Generation," named because of the rapid succession of new software that proudly touts inspiration from Wil Shipley's Delicious Library. It's flashy, it's snazzy, it's fun to play with and watch on the screen... and then it leaves you without saying goodbye in the morning and stops returning your calls."
They should talk! They (Rogue Amoeba) had a fine product called Detour. I registered it and used it on my G4. Then they decided they weren't going to support it any more. They gave all kinds of excuses on their web site about it, but it boiled down to they didn't feel like it was worth the hassle to support their paying customers anymore. When people started responded negatively in the forum on the page that had their reasons for discontinuing support, they closed the board and prevented further posts. Rogue Amoeba stated that the current release still worked and would probably work for the foreseeable future. Then Intel Macs came out and broke all apps that used control panels. I have an Intel iMac and cannot use Detour anymore. I have been unable to find an app that does what Detour did. Detour wasn't flashy, but it worked. I'd be perfectly happy with a flashy alternative.
Maybe they should clean up their own act before they start trashing other developers. - afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's take iTunes..one of the most coveted Apple apps. Yes, I know it runs on windows a sw ell, but the original was not. It takes more RAM than all other media players yet does the least (except maybe WMP does less). It is not as customizable as foobar2k, winamp, or Mediamonkey, yet people praise it. It's bloated, as are many other mac apps. How is XP bloated? And don't respond "fanboi". Give an actual example.

Hypeware has always been around, its had its strong times, but they always pass
MDA triggered a hypeware strong point, in less then a year the hype will be gone, and the hypeware will be forced to integrate the features they curently lack - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Here's an alternative to appzapper. While it may not be as "fun" (since appzapper only gave be 5 tries I wasn't able to evaluate "fun-ness"), it's free.
http://reggie.ashworth.googlepages.com/appdelete - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i thought that was most 2.0 crap out there
blogs are like blah blah blah
then so and so gets another million $ of funding
for VAPORWARE !!
at least they arent putting out IPO's like web 1.0 ... - ModernGeek, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2How is hypeware different than normal vaporware on other platforms?
- afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Umm..many windows apps are to-the-point. Just stay away from that shareware crap made by a first-time developer. Smoke effects are just pointless, and I'll bet you'd never see such effects on a windows app. Why? Demographics. The "young and hip" use Macs and want eye candy, while everybody else wants features. Mac developers net to think a bit straighter about what's important (features) and what is secondary (eye candy). This is another reason I stick with a windows machine, most apps are concise and are not as bloated or too simple like some mac apps.
- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Would one go so far as to compare the "Delicious Generation" to the iPod accessories industry?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3"OS X to applications (and ideas) built around flash and sizzle, with plenty of marketing hype to fuel the fire."
Well duh.... thats why all these fools were parted with their money in the Apple shop

What is Digg?
