- pfranz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9dmg is a disk image format for OSX. Usually inside is the application (as with this case). Dmg supports compression, encryption, and is easily burned to a disk if needed. Only very few apps for OSX have installers (Word and Photoshop do).
Sorry, Mac only. - nevenmrgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I tried the beta and found the app beautiful but essentially pointless.
Version 1.0 is producing the same results. My top 20 "fastest" and "most intensive" tracks (out of a library of 6,000) include a scratchy Django Reinhardt ballad, Neu!'s "Neuschnee" and Tricky's "Ghetto Youth" - tracks I'd describe as fairly slow and mellow.
Also, your iTunes-purchased songs will not be included; I understand that Potion can't legally break Apple's DRM, but it does cripple the whole enterprise significantly.
Keep the UI and rethink the algorithm. - machiabelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MoodLogic
"Moodlogic was bought by All Media Guide, the company that runs allmusic.com, in May of 2006. It is not yet clear whether All Media intends to resume development and reactivate the community."
This was around the dot-com crash, so my guess is that they ran out of funding. - AlexT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's an app called filter that I've been waiting for to come out w/ a mac version. But there is currently a windows version of it here: http://www.thefilter.com/download.html. I haven't tried it out though.
- carl201167, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's also http://www.thefilter.com/ which is pretty good
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5buried spam
- aychamo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree with nevenmrgan. It's one of the most beautiful app's I've played with, but it didn't work really at all. They really do need to re-think the algorithm to determin BPM of the songs. In no way did it create any kind of pleasing playlists with similar BPMs or anything.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Both Word and Photoshop come with installers, you don't actually need to use an installer to use them though.
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's also MusicIP for Mac, Windows or Linux. As a bonus, it works with Slim Device's SlimServer & Squeezebox/Transporter. Free basic version available:
http://www.musicip.com/ - paulua, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For Windows users, check out Soundflavor DJ. It picks songs from your library that sound like songs you're listening to in iTunes, and can either make playlists from them, or just play them for you (DJ mode). I've been using it for a few weeks, and it's quite good (and free)
http://www.soundflavor.com - DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes, which is why it was renamed to "Tangerine!" recently.
- conman16x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So I have yet to find any application that utilizes a very good BPM detection algorithm.
- MattJF317, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Direct link to the Beta product (15 day trial)
http://www.potionfactory.com/tangerine/Tangerine.dmg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3And if you blogged about it durning the beta, you got an email with a free license!
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2moodlogic: http://www.moodlogic.com/index.html
was, by far, the best "themed/mood" playlist creator that i have ever used. the software seemed to be critically respected, but without explanation, the project quietly disappeared.
does anyone know what happened? - reedreeder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I was using a beta version several months ago, and was never very impressed with it. Beats per minute doesn't always mean speed of the song, so my "upbeat" playlists included artists like damien rice.
- SicKn3sS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The whole I-Tunes market should be classified as spam.
- tunesfan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Check out MoodShuffle at http://www.moodshuffle.com It figures out your mood on the fly. Pretty cool.
- gauthierm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's also a cross-platform DAAP server that can talk to iTunes http://directory.fsf.org/all/tangerine.html. How very confusing.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's also the name of the default Ubuntu icon theme, and an open-source DAAP server.
- condormcs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i think its better to just use Pandora to discover new music. more acurate and will wont be windows racist
pandora.com - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6.dmg are OSX files. Im not very smart at this, but most OSX files I encounter for installations are .dmg files, which leads me to think its similar to .exe files.
Can someone correct me on this?
Incidentally, is there a Windows equivalent? - coolmacuser, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Save $5 off of the price, until Dec 31.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3This looks really cool, but can you install this with Windows? My computer doesn't know what a .dmg file is :(
- treymdnc, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7Word! Where is tengerine for Windows. Cmon... everyone knows that macs are for little girls.
