- Jaq524, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I think it's about time we stop calling it "iPhone". Didn't Gizmodo teach us all that lesson?
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12i don't want to hear crap about the iphonemobile until apple says something. these rumors have been floating around for years and apple's never said ***** to confirm any of them.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think the real lesson from Gizmodo is to cease the Apple phone rumors which have been going on for literally years.
If Apple comes out with a phone on or before MacWorld, I will personally buy one and have someone launch it via slingshot at my genetalia. This event will be filmed, placed on YouTube, and submitted to digg. However, since the number of iPhone rumors to date that contain factual information have yet to break the "1" barrier, I wouldn't plan to watch me writhe in pain on the floor any time soon. - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Duke Nukem Forever.

- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Apple is against everyone and their mother of the Cell Phone biz"
Not really.. The cell market is broader than the mp3 player market. For instance I doubt Apple's first generation of phones are going to compete with a bargain basement Nokia, and a Motorola Razr, and a Blackberry. They'll pick their market segment (probably mid-priced, fashionable handsets like the Razr) and go for that. I don't think they'll be up against everyone at once. - Rezzy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13The title to this is the spark to the powder keg that is the fanboy.

- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Who Is Apple Up Against?"
Hmm, a bunch of cell phone makers who can't seem to figure out how to make a decent user interface + a bunch of carriers who insist on crippling phones anyway, besides offering infuriatingly bad service, complex calling plans with long-term stranglehold commitments, and a general disregard for customer satisfaction?
Seems like this market is Apple's for the taking, if they do it right. - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Someone check who "banana phone" is trademarked to guys, I have a hunch.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I have no doubt it will be a monumental failure"
I seem to recall this same blather back in 2001 regarding a little product called the....iPod. - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can we have a separate category created just for iPhone stories please? Then I can unsubscribe from it.
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First of all Apple has always had to fight against everyone! The record labels, the giants MSes of the world, and they have always survived, not only that Apple is worth more than Dell, which had 80% of the computer market to date.
Don't under-estimate Apple's "phone initiative", Apple now holds ace card in the form of a patent it purchased from two record shop owners. The patent has been enforced 27 times by the court system. The patent covers the transfer of all digital media sales, meaning music, video, and other motion multi-media. The patent covers cellphones as well. Do you think it was an accident that the attorney that helped sell the patent to Apple leaked the information, the day after Universal said it would go after the iPod for a percentage of the hardware sales?
Apple now has the right to go to every single cell provide in the US, and charge them for ringtone downloads, video downloads, music downloads, and can use that same power on EVERYONE that ever sells music or movies on the internet in the united states.
Apple won't have any problem getting into the cellphone market with this ace card. It's very simple, if the cellphone MAFIA, won't let Apple or anyone else in the market, Apple will just make it clear what's going to happen to them, and things will go very smoothly. Imagine if Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint had to pay Apple backdating to the date of the patent (1992) for every media file ever transfered... Apple won't go this route, but it can mention it when the cell mafia tells Apple to shove off.
People really don't have a clue what's going on with Apple. MS really needs to get a grasp. Google has bought up 50% of the dark fiber in the US, Apple and Google are teaming up for video on demand, Apple is also negotiating with Sony on movie distribution through the PS3. Over the next 5 years Apple will have a complete IP telephony network that will make AT&T and the telecom cartel shiver, Apple and google have huge plans for blanketing the entire US in free wifi, and HDTV everywhere.
Apple isn't just going to be selling computers, they are going to crack the telecos, the cell mafia, and break it open so other people can get in too. One day the ability for anyone to have a cell network will happen, and all sorts of fun future stuff is happening at Apple. Apple has HUGE plans. Steve Jobs is now a media mogal with his hands in Disney, Pixar, and now ABC. He has big plans on changing the way the movie industry works, similar to shaking the recording industry. It's clear in 5 years, because of online music sales, that the RIAA will ceast to exist as people deal directly with the record labels and dont' have a middle man they are paying off for "protection" (which is all the RIAA is).
Steve Jobs, wants to change the world, and I for one, with the secrets I've seen at Apple, see a very bright future for Apple computer. As many of the stock analyst are saying Apple is the "Buy of the Century", and I for one believe it. Change is in the wind... - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It will be called the "Mighty Phone" and have buttons that are nearly inaccesable and a scroll wheel in the middle of the display. Kidding kidding. I do dislike the Mighty Mouse though.
- romeosc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It will be called iPod Communicator ..... like in Star trek Communicator.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4iPhone is already taken.. why not just Apple Phone?
- qpid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8It is not "all but certain", there have been iphone rumors for YEARS
There will NOT be an iphone announced at Macworld, hell there will not be an iphone from apple ever, they will do what they continue to do which is license itunes and related software to Motorola and the like - fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As for the Mighty Mouse.
I just got a 24" iMac a week ago and at first the Mighty Mouse was fine but now the only issue I have with it is right clicking. The only other hardware fault I can even think about is the dammned UK keyboards - they're great to type on but Having the £ above the '2' key (where we usually have " is not entertaining) and the @ in place of the "
Anyway other than that I'm loving my mac. I was expecting to have to force myself to get used to it but other than the odd mistake with keyboard shortcuts its easy to get used to. - beatmenace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2iPod/phone hybrid = Apple's first big mistake since Jobs returned. If they go aggressively to market with the product that everyone is speculating about, I have no doubt it will be a monumental failure. The only demand that exists for this type of product is with Apple fanboys.
- mattp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mrASSMAN:
Not necessarily. Apple could still use the name, even though Linksys is using it too. It might not be the smartest idea, but perhaps still legally possible:
http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/12/19/iphone.name.still.open/
" There are actually four iPhone trademarks filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, and of those, only one has been granted to Linksys and its parent company Cisco. Two others have initially been refused, and a fourth (by Ocean Telecom) has yet to formally enter the approval process.
The Ocean Telecom patent is unique as the only one of the four filed patent applications to actually address music. In addition to telephone services, it specifically refers to "MP3 and other digital format audio players." The Cisco/Linksys patent, meanwhile, limits itself to "integrated telephone communication with computerized global information networks." The diversity of patents may actually work in Apple's favor -- since no one company seems to have a dominant claim, the USPTO may not be able to refuse an Apple trademark." - wolver1ne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who needs "iPhone" when there's a Walkman phone (W950).
- ChrisThornley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not the iPhone. Another company already took that name. I can definitely see Apple coming out with a phone though.
iMobile or iCellular might be cool though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they want to make some money, make it an unlock 3g quad band gsm world phone. Yeah the price will be insanely high and not a lot of people in the State will have it. But that's a very good thing :) Honestly though Apple is looking at a very tough market here, with Samsung, Nokia, and Sony pushing out new and better phones with new technology every 6 months, there is noway Apple can keep up. Samsung D900 is already a bad ass phone with a 3mp camera and tons of multimedia capabilities, and yeah it's thin as *****. Nokia N95 is a freaking beast with dual sliding screen, 5mp camera, built in GPS. Sony already have several awesome music phones like the W810i, w850i, w950i (with 4gb of flash memory.) This is NOTHING like the MP3 market, it's more like the computer market but with better and more experience competition at the high-end market. One thing i wanted to see is how Apple going to market their phone to the price conscience American consumers.
- Pelapp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Another roumor about an Apple phine, doesn't get me 1/10 as exited as this;
http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/26/nokias-n95-smartphone-goes-legit/
Apple will have to pull out something special if they want to make a serious entry in the mobile phone market. Or, they could target a specific target group like paulmdx mentioned. - runforcover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a message from the future! The iPhone was released in early January 2007 at Macworld.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iPod, iPod Mini, iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano & iPod Phone.
- HeaDiggrNCharge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iDontgiveadamnwhatitscalleduntilitsreleased
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And the iPod took a couple years to finally catch on. At first, they were nothing but expensive MP3 players that only worked with Macs.
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah yes the fabled Nokia N95, sorry to burst your bubble but that cellphone is out of date. It was barely fresh when they "announced it" almost TWO FREAKING years ago, yet it has never to exist. By the time it comes out you'll have a cellphone from Apple. Do you really think Apple doesn't have every cellphone made on the planet? They probably have played with every phone you can think of, and torn everyone apart. Apple is taking it's sweet time because it's going to give you something that's completely different than you expect. Don't expect a cellphone that you've ever seen before in your life. It's going to change everything. Apple isn't just think about making calls, dialing numbers, what they have is beyond anything you expect.. You'll see at macworld ;-) January 9th
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "iPhone" has already been released by cisco systems. Geeze. Refer to it as the Apple phone, or something other than iPhone!
- defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5LET - IT - GO
seriously people who cares, youve been hyping a non-existent product for 2 years now. the iphone was out, by motorola, it sucked, no one wanted it.
g-damn fanboyz - KansasKnab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0runforcover it has not been released to people yet! and for all of you it will be cingular
- kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Creative already has an MP3 player with a harddrive, it's going to be too hard for Apple to release their first player with everything that the rest of the players have, and still for a competitive price. It's simply a matter of costs of the first production and getting them out on the market.
Sound familiar? - JoeCabot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like to see more iFacts, iKnowledge and iTruth on digg rather than endless speculation and rumors about Apple products.
- lemmingscanfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nooo, :P So with 4 days left of 2006 its not going to be released in 2006 after all? :(
- KansasKnab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0qpid or however you say it is so effing dumb the iPhone was just released at the keynote address in San Fransisco. iPhone aint taken and Steve did not get fired he is the owner and founder of Apple and an old co founder of microsoft when bill and he worked together and then went there seperate ways. I cant beleive you are all so dumb except the smart ones of course which is not qpid!
- arjayl642, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Best guessing article for the "iPhone" I've seen so far.
However, I doubt that it the finished project will be called the iPhone. People tend to say it bceause everything else Macs have begin with i; but then again, iCould be wrong. - ahuxley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dual-mode cellular/VoIP would be interesting.
If Apple could get out in front of other telcos with desktop or computer based plans.
Service contracts will be the killer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple would have to do a lot to get me to get rid of my Samsung D900.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The iPod Phone
and thats it - WoahPuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2n00b
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Its gonna be called 'Suck on Steve Jobs' Big White Phoner'
- MScrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've heard the Apple phone rumors for years. So much, that I've become desensitized to it. What exactly will the Apple iPod/phone be? Will it combine a 4gb nano with a cell phone so you can have the functionality of both in one device?
Will it be 4gb, and compete with the nano? A cell phone that costs $200? Or, an iPod with a 2 year contract? - presdentbuypork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0mmm apples
- Cowboy1015, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Who needs iPhone?
Wait for the release of Nokia N95 early next year.... it's the monster of all cell phone. Talk about 5mp camera, GPS, WiFi, Stereo Bluetooth, MP3, Internet Browsing, Document editing and more. Being a cell phone is just a small fraction of it's purpose. One downside, 3G is on 2100... as the rest of the 3G world.... and America is 1900 only. Crap!!! The good part is, it has EDGE.
http://www.technovibe.com/news/mobile-technology/new-nokia-n95-introduced.html - mattcampbell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2iPhone, iMobile,iPortable ???
what the hell is it going to be called? - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm really curious to see if Apple ends up porting iChat and iCal to Windows. I assume the iPhone's #1 selling point is excellent software integration. I can't imagine it being successful if only Mac users can enjoy that.
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0He'll name it after one of his daughters.
Basically he's copying Windows Mobile.
Can't wait till they make an Intel based games console. Dual Cpu X Dual Core with a Intel GPU. - ChrisThornley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2PhoneBook Pro would make me really happy. haha
Might be the best name for anything ever... -
