Yeah, it has...but the Mac has been able to do that for years - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38It was too straightforward. It looked and sounded more like a tutorial than an advertisement, and there was nothing there worth talking about or anything that resonates in the mind, especially in comparison to the Mac and PC ads as of late.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+42Exactly. I hate how everyone non-computer-geeky at my school is like "a Mac is more creative and a PC is only good for programming stuff"
- Dust3r, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36You really think that is the way it should be? Look at how successful the current Apple ads have been (i.e. Mac and PC guys). I view this ad as very unappealing, boring, and very uncreative. This ad really reminds me of a plain old Dell commercial.
- cptmorgan, on 10/12/2007, -14/+36this is boring and bad. apple's pc and mac campaign is brilliant.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+31That is the first Apple ad that doesn't remind me of negative political ads.
But aside from that, there's nothing there that you can't do on a PC. - JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26Uh, why use those programs when I can use Windows Meeting Space? I just had a conference call/video meeting over it. And not only did we all have videos of ourselves, but we were able to "share" programs on our desktops. So I was able to see the latest numbers via an Excel sheet someone else shared.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19In advertising you sell the sizzle, not the steak.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17i don't think this is a commercial, but rather a promo video. Apple makes those all the time for in-store use, or at events (like MacWorld or something).
as far as non-negative Apple ads, they have made tons. the newer "i'm a Mac..." ones are just stuck in your head. all the iPod/iTunes ads ignore the competition. tons of Apple computer ads going back over the years are not at all negative (though there are some). i'm sure there are a lot on youtube, or Apple fan sites and you'll see. - eschompthis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22remember people windows users are fat, and apple users are slim and stylish
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -12/+25I'd like to see you to get a 4 way video chat going in aim, msn, icq, or jabber (the apps, not the services mind you) -flawlessly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@ ahawks
You can with AIM and with Skype. Both work flawlessly between Mac and PC. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19But demoting PCs is so funny.. Especially when the PC is personified by John Hodgeman.
- vandy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19on any pc? because...you can do that on pretty much any mac right out of the box (mac mini and pro excluded since they dont have built in monitors). it promotes the ease of use of the mac, which is a nice characteristic to emphasize.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18"While it's true that Apple should focus more on promoting the benefits of their computers/os, I think it's time they struck back. Microsoft has ripped-off so much from the OS X. With the debut of Vista, more "stolen ideas" can be seen. Widgets and Gadgets, iPhoto and Windows Photo Gallery, iCal and Windows Calendar, Spotlight and the search menu at the Start menu.
Apple deserves so much more credit for innovation."
Would you be suprised if I told you most of the ideas actually started off in Longhorn development or long long before that?
I do know for sure that Apple invented nor pioneered none of these apps. - lgc90, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12This is quite a technological feat, and although PCs can do it too, Macs have literally been doing it (seamless 4-way video chat on 3-D glossy conference table interface and everything...) for years.
Here's a glimpse of the future: http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/ichat.html - diggn_it, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"With windows, you (get this...) actually have to go /online/, and download the app. The whole process takes /minutes/."
No, with a PC (were not talking about windows here) you ACTUALLY have to go to the store, purchase a web cam, come back, find and download the drivers, set up the webcam, then download the software.
So yeah, thats much easier than just breaking open the box and video chatting immediately - Dweller99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The typical Mac ad seems more about preaching to the choir than it does about educating consumers.
- quetranza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11You seriously don't buy Apple products because you don't like their *advertising*?
I'm sure Teh Steve is wiping away his tears with his mock turtleneck right now. - 20miles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Is this even an ad? It seems to be more like a feature introduction similar to those found on the leopard preview portion of apple's site. Apple wouldn't put this on TV.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Hi, I'm a PC. I feel inadequate cause the Mac keeps saying how cool he is. I know I could just ignore him but, but...
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"You can catch up with your friends wherever you are."
As long as you are at your computer? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Do you know how boring forums can be without flame wars?
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ersnyder,
Sorry guy, but every political party in the United States does that, not just the Democrats. - garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6crimsonnblue,
*Tap tap* Is this thing on? - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13No, you're absolutely right. Since it hasn't been faced with monopoly charges for bundling software, Mac bundles it's first party video chat app with the OS.
With windows, you (get this...) actually have to go /online/, and download the app. The whole process takes /minutes/.
When will MS learn that "out of the box" is the way to go? - TheUngod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When you have over 80% market share and every single person on earth knows about you, do you need to advertise? Besides, Mac isn't competing with Windows, it's competing with "PC." Apple is, after all, a hardware company.
- defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7apple fan boys strike again. it is amazing how useless DIGG is becomming.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10as opposed to MS's deceitful, spiteful, and otherwise repulsive business practices?
- vitaboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9
From an objective perspective, the only people getting pissed off at the Apple "Get a Mac" ads are a tiny vocal minority. How do we know this? Because we know Mac marketshare is growing in excess of 40% per year. That kind of growth is not coming from the existing Mac userbase, but because of hundreds of thousands of PC users switching every year and if "every PC user" is so pissed off by the ads, you either have to believe PC users are true masochists or accept the simple notion that maybe not that many PC users are pissed off.
In other words, the ads appear to be highly effective, even if it gets certain people (who blog) steamed up under the collars. I highly doubt this iChat infomercial style ad will register in the minds of most people even if they saw it 10 times on TV, whereas the current PC/Mac ads register almost immediately. The purpose of all advertisement is to attract attention immediately, and watching this boring iChat ad is not the way to do it. I think it's a good thing that Åpple never uses focus groups to design their products. The same can be said of their commercials.
Or maybe there are certain people out there that would rather have a BMW commercial focusing on the amazing stereo faceplate instead of the visceral emotion of driving a luxury high performance car because how insulting it is to Ford or Mercedes owners to have BMW claiming it is the "ultimate driving machine" in every ad. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7quick crim!, if u look up now u might see the joke flying over your head.
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I always loved Apple and its advertising campaigns. Think Different was a work of genius. It celebrated personal differences and portrayed the Mac as the computer for the Misfits and the Rebels. The 1984 campaign was also great. Even the "Switch" ads were kind of nice.
The new Mac vs. PC ads are made to appeal to the masses and to the "cool" factor. You use a Mac if you want to be cool. Only geeks and nerds and squares use PCs. It reminds me of high school. Being a geek and a nerd I took personal offense much like the cavemen in the Geico ads did. And worst of all, a lot of the facts that are presented are either not true or have not been true for the last couple of years. Of course, these ads that are targeted toward our need for social reassurance and popularity have been wildly successful. However, for me they marked the end of an era. I lost my love for Apple. - samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm divided on this one.
On one hand I think it's really nice to see a quick demonstration of what you can do with a Mac - I think the usability aspect is what drew me and a lot of people I know to Macs - not the fact that Windows is boring.
On the other hand, Windows fan-boys have been poking fun at Apple since the early 90's, suggesting to the world that it's some sort of toy that doesn't 'do' games or home office. The current adds fairly represent the relationship between the two camps.
I'm a big fan of the Switch adds. - cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lemme just State something, Random Capitalization is good for The internet, and will Help us All with literacy. I guarantee It.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Hasn't Microsoft Netmeeting been doing this since Windows 98?
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Rule #1 of advertising a well branded company: no one gives a ***** about features.
Maybe not "no one", but a statistically insignificant number of people will pay attention to an ad that talks about features. Face it, people want to be entertained. The most effective commercials are entertaining first, informative second. - PabloMac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8If you see a question mark here: () you just don't get it.
- mdjukic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple's marketing is amazing, period. The way they promote is amazing. They believe their product is superior to PCs and that's what they are selling. PCs and Apples have always been dueling over their customer base and will continue to do so until one doesn't exist any more -- which is very unlikely.
Besides, if you know anything about marketing, you'll know that Apple's commercials are great and successful. They are appealing and bring customers into their stores. They won't stop and they shouldn't. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ulcards2033: I mentioned firmware versus BIOS. Most PCs use a BIOS whereas macs use EFI or Open firmware. BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output system. It provides an extremely limited set of functions whereas EFI stands for Extensible Firmware Interface. While the latter can emulate the former, the opposite is not possible.
Part of what makes a mac a mac is the software but it is also the niceties such Firewire Target disk model and scheduled startups/shutdowns provided by a combination of a custom power management unit and customized EFI/Open firmware. - VulcanMike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The current Mac ads are more effective at conveying the Apple brand experience than anything I've previously seen. This, as pointed out above, is little more than a product spotlight and is certainly not an ad.
Putting down PCs? The current campaign is quite friendly, quite clear and quite entertaining. If you want to see PCs put down, check out the 1984 commercial when Apple was trying to carve out market share against the ubiquitous "IBM PC."
PC in the current commercials is a likable character, but he just doesn't always get it. I've been using PCs since the first PCjr and "Doesn't always get it" and the PC character is just about the most perfect personification of my PC and Windows experience. I'm still a PC user, but if I had to start all over again today, I'd more seriously consider the cooler machine that recognizes devices as soon as they're connected, has an attractive design and "just gets it" when it comes to simple everyday things. You shouldn't have to spend your entire life trudging through a operating system to comfortably use it.

You will be able to share your desktop on the new AV it is another one of the features not included in this promotion. Best of all it's free and you can do the video chat with anyone who has video chats enabled it is just easier to do it with mac users because all of their computers are now coming out with built in cameras vs. pcs where you have to buy an external camera. - moudig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6> Nice to see something about Apple that does not focus on how much the other guy sucks.
But the other guy really sucks! - clickmyface, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I didn't purchase a Mac 5 years ago because of any ads. I purchased a Mac because a friend of mine had a PowerBook G3 that I used a couple of times over at his house because I was curious about the idea of having an OS alternative. I was very critical, but Mac OS 9 was amazing and when I finally decided to buy a laptop of my own I got a PowerBook and got to experience OS 9 and the OS 10 release. I know a substantial amount about Windows and the PC world (where I make part of my living) and I choose the Mac based on its better user experience than Windows.
I could debate why I find the Mac experience more enjoyable, but I would merely be expressing my personal preference. Part of the reason why I am so loyal to Apple is because people at Apple are so loyal to their products. Jobs might be an *****, but he sure as hell is passionate about the products his company releases, not the dollars that follow. And they never had to tell me that to get me to believe it; I used a Mac and found out.
Regardless, it's experiencing a Mac that brought me to Apple and clearly Apple recognized that because since then they have opened 200~ retail stores in the world full of computers where people can go mess around with them. Thats what sells Macs. Thats what should sell computers. - netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8...Because there aren't any Windows ads, perhaps? And because Windows ads don't try and tell other people they're better?
- Macam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The whole PC vs. Mac thing aside, this isn't an ad and there's nothing new here.
- heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4maybe he meant microsoft ads, theres plenty of them
- vandy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that sounds like an issue with your internet service, not ichat
- mnrosebud, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7This isn't an actual ad it is just part of the features preview of the new OS.
- hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3www.stardust.tv
click on work, there are your windows ads.
they're pretty cool too. I love stardust :) -
