- RedCt, on 07/14/2008, -3/+63As usual, a great review from Ars. I also like the fact that they actually took the time to notice stuff like the fact that the new camera is 1mm larger than the old one.
- CosmoIaccavazi, on 07/14/2008, -5/+31Excellent review. It's disappointing that it doesn't appear ready for business use just yet. The lack of ability to send calendar invites from the iPhone is going to keep a lot of BlackBerry users, well, using BlackBerries.
- astrobela, on 07/15/2008, -2/+25"it's all the same, except for the "3G" printed on the side of the box." wow so they notice the camera is 1 mm smaller but they don't notice the box is much smaller. http://i35.tinypic.com/5v53pl.jpg
- astrobela, on 07/15/2008, -0/+15"If the change is so dramatic, we should be able to tell, right?
Wrong."
I think it's pretty obvious what jobs meant by improved audio quality: flush audio jack and improved speaker. - Jeezoflip, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11wow. i cant believe how thorough that review was. thank you.
- ibeetle, on 07/15/2008, -2/+12Newsflash! All the telcos' spy on their customers. And all turn information in to the feds about suspicious activity.
It is just AT&T got caught. - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6if it could record H.264 video, add it immediately to your video playlists and be able to play it back on the fly it would turn into something useful...
- shutaro, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5You know, I've always wondered about the quality of the new iPhone/Bloomin' Onion interface...
- Hkessell, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6It's just not worth the $175 termination fee from the grip of Verizon + $200 for unit, and $80+ a month for me to switch. Looks like a solid phone as the original was, but the poor battery life is a serious upset.
- elister, on 07/15/2008, -4/+8Thee things some people care about...
1) Is this actually better than my company issued blackberry.
2) Is the battery life as advertised (it wasnt with the Mac Air).
3) Speed and voice quality.
Or you can ignore everything, buy an iPhone even tho it hasnt even been a week since it went on sale, only to find out (from your own personal POV) that it isnt much better than my current phone or original iPhone.
PS
This review is far better than ones ive read. ARS isn't shy about pointing out flaws in devices, which is why I appreciate its ability to review Apple products without sounding like a zealot. - elmetald00d, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5learn about photography before you diss a 2 megapixel camera retard.
if you add megapixels without makingthe lens bigger you generate noise in the photo resulting in ***** pictures
moron - briguy200, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5I laughed at that as well as this:
"This change shaves 0.1 ounces off the weight of the device, to 4.7 ounces, which is surprisingly noticeable when holding the iPhone."
just amazing - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -2/+5NOW CAN WE PUT ON A FILTER!!
- BentleyGT07, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3It's true though. I have had owned both iPhones and its rounder and smoother on the back which gives it a slicker feel. The older iPhone is just flat on the back but its still thin to begin with. It's just one of those things you can really noticed if you compare them side by side.
- mmacpherson2, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Wouldn't it be better for a company to openly spy on your phone call rather than hide it from you? Just a thought.
- SteveMax, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4News for you: it's NOT limited to AT&T, unless you're among the ~4.5% of the global population that lives in the USA.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Mac user and Apple fan, but Steve Jobs sceptic. It's the safe route.
- gllopc, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2I think saying that it's not business ready is a bit of a hyperbole. Although a Blackberry may still be more business capable, I'm receiving Exchange emails now, adding and removing calendar items and accepting calendar invitations; something I couldn't do before (although I think it should have).
There are plenty of business users happy that their iPhone has features the Blackberry doesn't do or doesn't do as well (i.e., movies/shows on a larger screen, touchscreen games, audio player). - theurge14, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2It's called topic filters. Check it out in your profile settings.
- ExSlashdotter, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Okay, serious question from an IT guy:
Has anyone tried to use RSA securid keychains with the exchange mail?
I see docs all over the place with RSA for the vpn app, but what about for exchange mail? On our windows mobile devices, we've got it set up to throw an RSA webpage up in front of you when you hit activesync. - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3tl;dr
- Sairynn, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3Except it's not ***** at all, every reviewer has said it's much louder and sounds at least reasonably better.
- wildsnake, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3I hate Lexus
- SurrealDream, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2My Sony Ericsson K750i (which I bought 4 years ago purely for its 2mp camera, and has only recently been binned for the new iPhone) takes better snaps than my iPhone. Slightly dissapointing, but it's not a feature I use much anyway these days.
If it's a major factor in your choice of phone, don't buy an iPhone. Simple as. - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3It was released on Friday. It is only Tuesday now.
It is still very new. - TheWorm, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Soo, in other words everything good about the new iPhone is available on the old one as well?
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/15/2008, -4/+5I couldn't see a less important thing to mention after that in depth review like that. It means nothing. The Exchange support review was definitely the most revealing, still no email search etc. Sometimes I wonder Apple.
- incandescent, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1elmetald00d, why don't you try using the camera on any Nokia, Samsung or Sony Ericsson phone before insulting people? The iPhone's camera is a complete joke by comparison.
- axemachine, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3I use my HTC Mogul with MapQuest Navigator and it works great. Just like TomTom.
- MixMasterK, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1dugg for title.
- kinerry, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2you didn't read the "openly" part, now did you?
- Remmiz, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2How nice of them to test speeds in Waukesha, WI; right outside my school.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3He was talking about the speaker when he said "dramatically improved audio". I called it as his usual ***** when I heard it, however if it is in fact louder like Ars said, then that is certainly an improvement.
- qpdb, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Indepth review. Dugg
- AvidPreatorian, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2jealousy....it's a *****
- d0ugfunny, on 07/15/2008, -3/+4good read, even though I'm getting kind of sick of hearing about it
- Maddcovv, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Whoah Whoah Whoah, Don't go cutting in to my drinks.... food I can do without.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1retard.. really?
***** you.. tosser. - Sairynn, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2Hardly a "nutsucking" review. They gave it a pretty low score.
- e2superman, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Lots of companies do not use exchange. My work uses (*eek) Lotus Notes. The iPhone is just not universal in features and support like Crackberry.
- disoriented, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Get the dare holmes.....
- dbradman56, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1iPhone is not as good as the new Nokia 5800. I have one and I love it :)

Wait... damned if I'm not...
Oh, well. Guess we all have to hate on something. - wildsnake, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1I hate Sony
- SeanJuanAO, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2Just buy it, I got the 1st Gen and wanted the 3G the second I tried EDGE out. This is the most technologically advanced phone out there. Who cares about $30 more a month, that is a few drinks that you can do without.
- incandescent, on 07/15/2008, -3/+1I don't hate it, but I'm deeply disappointed by it.
- ibeetle, on 07/15/2008, -9/+5*****! At this point the only people that haven't done a review of the iPhone is Taco Bell and Outback Steak House.
The thing has been out for five days now and we are still getting in-depth and first look at articles.
Not counting this article ars technica has done 20 stories on the iPhone sense launch day July 11th. 20 stories; I think we can say ars technica has already looked at the damn thing pretty much in-depth by now. -
