Digg for the poster. - faceness007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Intersting, the Apple Music Store is now featuring the music video on their front page...
- Pluckie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Postal Service is amazing. And most definitely not emo.
- YouKnowWho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh cmon, by the looks of things the director was the one with the idea of the video, not the band, not this dude. If anything he should be mad at the director because he gave the same concept to Apple and in turn made it into a commercial.
- andreascliment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ben has all right to be disappointed. Using the same concept for two different clients is a very weak move by the filmmakers. If anything, I thought Apple encouraged creativity, not repetition.
For those of you complaining about Postal Service's name conflicting with USPS, they actually have an agreement and both parts are cool with it. - willhaney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5emo: A group of white, mostly middle-class well-off kids who find imperfections in there life and create a ridiculous, depressing melodrama around each one. They often take anti-depressants, even though the majority don't need them. They need to wake up and deal with life like everyone else instead of wallowing in their imaginary quagmire of torment.
- satanscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone remember the old Intel ad's??? The director did the Postal Service video in homage to those ads as did Apple. I doubt they cared about the Postal Service. Yeah they have the same director, but thats because he knew what he was doing?? They are switching to intel so the obvious thing would be to spoof the old intel ad's. If someone could get ahold of the old Intel ad's I bet they would match the apple ad and the stupid Postal Service video.
- David513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I were the band, I'd be upset with the directors for making a video that has nothing to do with the song. At least the shots actually fit the subject of the Apple ad. What in the world do the shots have to do with the music they're paired with in the Postal Service video? I actually like the music (despite being an "ancient" 45 years old), but the video doesn't make sense to me.
David - digid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No publicity? I'm sure they don't mind.

Actually, they tried to sue them once, now the USPS can use the band's songs when they want. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I wouldn't piss off USPS...they crazy AND they got guns.
- mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had never heard of The Postal Service before this debacle. Now I've been listening to them in my car for about a week.
Win/Win in my opinion. - mtrutledge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IMHO, While the video and the commercial feature similar attributes, this is not a shot for shot duplication. No digg!
- mynimal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4How the hell is The Postal Service emo?
- liquidedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That is so strange. Apple has never stolen anything from someone else *before*!!
I mean, if you don't count GUI, fonts, applications, or hardware designs, they've never stolen from anyone before. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First off, The Postal Service didn't get their song used in an ad, just the entire "look and feel" of their video was recycled for an advertisement.
Secondly, there are plenty of "the postal services" in the English speaking world, so I doubt there is any agreement between the United States Postal Service and the band. Given a "postal service" is a common thing, I'm guessing a band name as such is fair use.
Finally, regardless of whether you like their music, I think it's fair for the band to be disappointed the artist they hired to create a concept and shoot their video sold basically the exact same concept to a company. Think of it in terms of another band that you like putting out a pretty freaking cool video, and then having nearly the same video rehashed for a Budweiser ad. Then imagine that ad gets crazy airtime. What before was a fresh idea for your video now becomes stale, and everytime someone sees your music video for your band, they think of the lame beer commercial they saw instead of focusing on the video and your music.
The people who produced the video are pretty crappy, if you ask me. The whole thing strikes me as having a total lack of creativity. If's as if the people who produced the video thought to themselves: "Let's sell this idea to as many different outlets as possible and cash in, because we are completely incapable of coming up with something new." Ugh. - azar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh god.
1) I am a fan of both apple and the postal service
2) the postal service is not emo in the least.
3) it seems most of you have skipped over this article posted earlier- the similarities are too great to miss: http://www.eliteproductionswi.com/apple-ps.htm
4) it isn't anyone's fault but the advertisment agency that made the ad. Unless it was apple knew about it. I don't know, don't really care that much either. But still, copying ads either way pretty much sucks. - mulletproof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1video for sgh by tps

False Alarm: Same Directors Behind Apple Intel Ad/Music Video
There's a simple explantion why Apple's new cleanroom ad looks just like a music video for The Postal Service: they were both made by the same people.
Sarah Moody of Sub Pop Records, The Postal Service's Seattle record company, writes:
"... the Apple commercial is indeed very similar, it wasn't licensed in any form, and was made by the same directors as the Postal Service video. We weren't alerted to the fact that it existed until the day it came out."
Moody didn't say, but The PS's Such Great Heights video was made by directing duo Josh Melnick and Xander Charity, whose working name is Josh & Xander. " - rrodriguez2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1typical steve jobs crap! down with the cult of mac!
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Agreed with Cgorman68. The Postal Service are not emo. There songs are all happy and lollipos and rainbows. And Mancat also has a valid point. A cool band, with a cool video, been compared to a VERY cool ad from a VERY VERY cool company, and shown around on a somewhat even COOLER website.
- GeneralChang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5600934255578934893&q=apple+commercial
forgot to link a side by side video of the intel/postal video. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad this became less of an area of understanding, and more of a flame-fest for certain types of music.
Further proof that digg needs a ranking system for users that actually implements limitations.
And, for the record, the Postal Service is terrific. - GeneralChang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm seeing a trend here. Apple likes your commercial or video or some prior work you've done so they hire you and have you recreate that exact same thing but with their product.
In the case of eminem they even used a look-alike!
It's dirty and underhanded but I guess that's thinking outside the box. - ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd be disappointed too since the Apple ad used Moby for the music and they didn't even approach the Postal Service for an offer to licence their music.
- jobeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wonder if Ben is still disappointed now that they are on the front page of iTunes
http://digg.com/apple/The_Postal_Service_music_video_put_on_iTunes_frontpage_:) - catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to Scientific Proof Magazine, Vol 31, Issue 28: Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie are not emo. Conversely, the study reveals, they are awesome.
- boombashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did respect the Postal Service and their music, and while I still like their music, I feel like they are being a little reactive with this whole thing...I think a classier act would be to let Atlanta Record's lawyers contact Apple and handle it, I'm sure Apple would throw them a few hundred grand for their trouble and to settle.
Soak in the lime-light, but don't let your pants fall off in the process. - desiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sad about the posting here..
If the article said Apple stole a commercial shot for shot from Green Day, there would be outrage.
The "lameness" or lack thereof of the subject should have nothing to do with it. - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I posted this to simply pass on the info as an unbiased submission. There needs to be a better way to handle reporting stories since it seems people are reporting this story as lame, when in fact they feel that The Postal Service is lame (and thus missing the content behind the story). A "lame" uninformative bragging story about Apple is not the same as a story passing on the opinions of a band - make sense? Digg the content please.
- gModo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if it was the directors idea, he does not own the video, and he did not pay for it. So I think he sould have consulted the band, and/or label that owns the video before recreating it.
- natemc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the second commercial in a 12 month span for apple's ad firms to use other ideas that worked well for bands and commercials.
The lugz ad vs the eminem ad etc.
Are advertisers getting lazier? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm old, I guess, I've never even heard of that band.
But if I was them I'd be a little upset, because you just know that some people will inevitably see the apple ad first and think the band ripped off an apple ad for their video, which would be pretty lame. - rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is all to be taken light-heartedly. For all we know, the director did it as a comical aside to the Postal Service, who has enjoyed enormous popularity lately. The only thing that bugs me, then, is that Apple used this commercial but still stick with their slogan "Think Different" (which, by the way, should be "Think DifferentLY"
- natemc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also forgot to mention to the first poster that The Postal Service has licensed the name from the USPS and even played a show for the USPS as part of the agreement.
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if there is any coincidence that the "From Such Great Heights" video has suddenly been highly promoted on the iTunes store? Hmmm....?
- kram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To those of you who doubt the validity of the USPS and the postal service coming to an agreement...
From www.pitchforkmedia.com
"To that end, part of the deal involves the possibility of Postal Service tunes being used in USPS ad campaigns and promotions. In turn, Sub Pop is considering, under the auspices of their newly minted licensing deal, using local postal outlets as distribution points for Give Up. Additionally, Tamborello and Gibbard will be tapped to play a gig at an annual USPS conference. No, we are totally not kidding. Stop laughing. If you're somehow fortunate enough to legitimately attend this conference, or crafty enough to impersonate one of the 800 senior executives who will be present, please do us a favor and bootleg that sucker. Surreal events like this one don't happen every day, and they must be documented for posterity." - oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Emo (like punk) i just like the bible.... everyone has their own interpretation of what it means
- greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they have a comparison on MacTv videocast
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2digg is really turning into a bunch of over agressive idiots yelling at each other. it's really sad.
A few people here have seen the issue. The band paid a guy to give them a cool, original video. He did. (well, maybe it's not cool, i haven't seen it) the director of said video then goes off and makes a very similar commercial. That's pretty lame. I think we can all agree on that. it's not a dig on Apple, and Apple's not digging on TPS, it's a "you suck" to the director. cause I think we can all agree what he did was pretty lame. If you can't, then you have no common sense, and if you're just here to say things like "emo sucks, go cry somewhere else" then you really should go elsewhere.
/doesn't like emo, the postal service, or apple. also doesn't like idiots. - gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Welcome to the entertainment business. The band should be flattered that they are getting all kinds of additional press out of it. Happens all the time, but usually you don't hear so much whining. It's the nature of the business. Find something cool, milk it for all it's worth.
- junkfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL. It's always funny to read the opinions of the Mac faithful - the inventors of "that's such a rip off of [fill in name of Apple, Mac, Jobs, etc.].
I got a Mac, but not fanatical enough not to be disappointed in this from a company who prides themselves on marketing.
But hey whatever. I never heard of the band before anyway, so I'm not that broken up about it. - flashmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.postalservicemusic.net/

A Note from Ben
It has recently come to our attention that Apple Computers' new television commercial for the Intel chip features a shot-for-shot recreation of our video for 'Such Great Heights' made by the same filmmakers responsible for the original. We did not approve this commercialization and are extremely disappointed with both parties that this was executed without our consultation or consent. -Ben Gibbard, The Postal Service"
The band wants to know what you think:
info@postalservice.net - QuickFix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet he's more pissed at not getting any action ($$$) from apple on the commerical.
