The OS X desktop as music video watch!
tuaw.com — A digital filmmaker named Dennis Liu has made an amazing video for The Bird And The Bee's lovely song "Again & Again". The set? His Mac desktop. You sort of have to see it for yourself to understand; luckily, Dennis has dropped it on YouTube so that the world can see it in low-res glory.

- fuzzlog, on 05/10/2008, -36/+18Nicely made. Could be better if the video of the singer was closely synced to the lyrics, some parts of it feel like they don't fit in with the song, but overall very good.
ps. Does it start with Tiger and ends up with Leopard?- VikingZippy, on 05/10/2008, -1/+5Yep, it actually goes back and forth between the two, judging by the menubar.
- irgeorge, on 05/10/2008, -0/+20Yeah from what I heard it took 3 months to make, so it's likely the creator upgraded to Leopard in that time!
- willynilly, on 05/11/2008, -4/+9"Could be better if the video of the singer was closely synced to the lyrics"
WERE closely synced to the lyrics.- MtheoryX, on 05/11/2008, -6/+8No! You are wrong!
The "video of the singer" is a singular noun. Singular nouns use "was," not "were."
As in: He was running. Not: He were running.
If you're going to correct someone, make sure you've got your ***** straight, buddy.- oneoverzero, on 05/11/2008, -1/+7It's a subjunctive clause.
So you use the 'were' form.
As in: If he were running. Not: If he was running.

Since just saying "it's subjunctive, dumbass" doesn't seem to work:
When discussing an event that DID happen, you follow singular/plural for the verb to be. I was running; they were running.
When discussing hypotheticals in the past (i.e., things that DIDN'T happen) using to be, you always use 'were.' If I were running then, I'd be tired now; if they were running then, they'd be tired now. - onionbagel724, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1my brain hurts

http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f ...
The proprietary MS Office ***** is one reason it really sucks. They tried to create their own "standard" office format as well because they were butthurt about ODF becoming a standard and everyone saying "neener neener MSOffice isn't an ISO standard" so they corrupted the standards board and pushed through their own "standard" which only standardizes a container format -- there's still a ***** binary closed blob of data in there.
The other reason is that they still have ***** Office macro viruses because MS isn't smart enough to understand that allowing an application to use scripting that affects the WHOLE ***** SYSTEM is a huge security issue, and have basically been hacking on half-ass "fixes" for this instead of simply creating scripting that can't ***** over anything, but they won't because it'll break all of the corporate billion-dollar scripts already written.
tl;dr, Microsoft sucks, Office sucks. - Greg2k, on 05/11/2008, -3/+2Sorry, but have you ever had to build a macro that NEEDS to affect the whole ***** system in order to get the job done? I have, and it's a ***** godsend. Inside a corporate environment there are times when you need this sort of system tinkering at your disposal. And yes, even inside Office documents.
There's a reason why macro execution is no longer enabled by default; it's up to you to decide if you want to execute code or not. Those of us who DO want to are glad Microsoft hasn't backed down on this kind of scripting.

- MScrip, on 05/10/2008, -9/+109Apple should use this for an iMac commercial. Because it shows OS X. It shows a Mac period. Not like the dozens of other Mac commercials where they always talk about Windows Vista.
I'm a firm believer that the words "Windows" and "Vista" should never be used in an Apple commercial! Hey Apple... you make such great computers. Why are your commercials so bad? Why don't you show us how good Macs are, instead of making us feel stupid for using Windows all our lives? You want to convert us? Convince us!- elliotks, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4I think they should at least advertise at the end of their commercials to provide a base url, because if you haven't noticed a lot of software / hardware commercials really don't spend a lot of time showing all their features. Just making it seem like their product is awesome and let people research the product further.

http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/- MScrip, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2> "a lot of software / hardware commercials really don't spend a lot of time showing all their features."
Well, Apple's own iPhone commercials seem to pack in quite an experience in just 30 seconds. E-mail, Google Maps, Facebook, oh it's a phone too. Clever. I imagine they could show off a lot of cool iMac features in multiple 30 second spots. There have been 38 Mac vs. PC ads. That's 17 minutes of content. That's plenty of time to show why a Mac is better. Instead they just talk about Windows. Not clever.
> "and let people research the product further. "
Well, if you've already got a commercial on TV, use that time effectively! Why make someone go over to their crappy computer and visit apple.com? If a commercial is interesting, then I might look it up online. But 2 guys standing in a white space telling us why Vista sucks is not an experience I'd wanna continue online.
- MScrip, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2> "a lot of software / hardware commercials really don't spend a lot of time showing all their features."
- willynilly, on 05/11/2008, -14/+11It's because there IS no clear advantage to using a Mac, and therefore there's no way to visually communicate it in a brief commercial. The entire "elegance" myth is just that: a myth. So a non-specific commercial is the best way to perpetuate the lie.
Notice that this is not an assertion that Windows is better than OS X.- MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -2/+9> "there's no way to visually communicate it in a brief commercial."
I envision an iMac commercial like this: "You have a digital camera. Now get a computer that lets you manage all your digital photos. iPhoto... only on a Mac."
In 30 seconds you would see a digital camera plug into a Mac, and how easy it is to upload your photos.
Everyone has a digital camera. But, not many people have a solution to effectively organize their photos. I'm talking about normal consumers, not tech savvy people. Have you tried to use the software that comes with a digital camera? It's not a good experience. But people install the CD that came with their Canon digital camera anyway. You could spend $100 on Adobe Photoshop Elements to organize your photo collection, or download Picassa or some other application. But are non tech savvy people even gonna know what Picassa is? Every Mac has that software built in. An HP computer from Best Buy can't say that.
There's plenty of ways to show what a Mac does. My point is if you're gonna buy a new computer anyway, why not get a Mac and get some good software with it? I'm with you, I'm a hardcore Windows user. I can do great things on Windows. But can everyone else? I believe that Apple could make better commercials that show off their own product, instead of bashing Windows.
iLife alone could be a series of commercials. iPhoto, iMovie, iDvd, Garageband etc. One commercial for each. All new Windows computers have DVD burners, and almost everyone has a digital camcorder. How many people are using the Roxio DVD Creater or whatever came on their Best Buy PC? None. But if you had a Mac, you could do all that stuff out of the box.
As I'm typing this, I can see how these commercials would be. Why can't Apple see that?- Syphon8, on 05/11/2008, -2/+8Windows: Plug in digital camera, open folder with pictures.
Mac OS X: Plug in digital camera , open folder with pictures.- MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3Then what? What do you do next? Better yet... what does the stay at home mom do, or Uncle Frank? Simply plugging a camera into a computer is not the answer. How do you print photos, email photos, crop, or upload photos to an online sharing site? Does Windows Explorer do that? If you just wanna look at your photos on your camera, that's fine. But there is more to digital photography than plugging in a camera.
I make folders with Year - Date - Event... but I'm a tech savvy person who is comfortable with organizing my files into folders. But, the average person needs software to organize their photos. And what is your solution for that? Opening a folder? - Demens, on 05/11/2008, -1/+4Actually, in windows XP. Explorer does most of those things with the preview software. In Vista we have pretty decent Gallery software, which can be updated for free to the Live Gallery version that is packed with pure awesome. (flickr-support, panorama stitching, image correction tools...)
- Blandyman, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Mscrip:
Demens explained it to you, and it's all there. It's iPhoto, but for Windows. It's amazing and useful. Granted, I don't use it much, but my girlfriend lives with her finger on the shutter button, so she knows it's great. - MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Blandyman:
Awesome! I'll check it out. I'm never too excited about Microsoft software... but I'm sure Microsoft is stepping up their game and creating an awesome OS to rival Apple.

- akeldama, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Ever hear of Picasa?
- MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Yes I have. And I mentioned it before. But we're talking about average people. Look at all the people who have digital cameras... it's not just tech people anymore. If people can download Picasa and make it run, that's fine. But, these are the same people who have spyware on their computers and not even know it. So how are they gonna hear about Picasa?
I personally set my Mom up with Photoshop Elements. It's easy for her to use. But "I" had to set it up. She probably could install it herself, but it would be a mess, and who knows the outcome. - Blandyman, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1You mean your mom can't hit "Next" a few times and double-click the desktop icon?
- MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Blandyman:
She probably could. The point is, Apple comes with the software. Now Vista has some great photo software. Are you suggesting that people buy a Vista machine instead of a Mac?
- MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Yes I have. And I mentioned it before. But we're talking about average people. Look at all the people who have digital cameras... it's not just tech people anymore. - KeithA45, on 05/11/2008, -2/+9Wow man, I agree. I'm a mac fan-boy and still think you're absolutely right.
I love my bashing Windows Vista, but even I think it's getting kinda old - poxonyou, on 05/11/2008, -1/+4I agree.
One of the main reasons people don't convert now is based on lifestyle perceptions.
They've advertised the Mac as the smug, douchebag, coffee-shop boy's computer.
They should take a hint from the US elections. People are really sensitive about lifestyle, so avoid tying your product to one. You may draw in some people, maybe those who wish they were smug coffee shop boys, but you can do better.
Advertise the product. OS X looks much better than Vista. I think more people will want it when they see it in action. - KMartSheriff, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7This would be the best Mac ad they never made. Let's hope Apple is smart, actually takes some initiative and contacts this guy. Awesome video.
- p0tent1al, on 05/11/2008, -1/+4Mainstream don't even know what a Mac is, and the people in mainstream that do know what a mac is, think you still can't right click or use MS Office on it.
Apple is doing exactly everything it needs to do to put itself in the public eye. Remember: Diggers are the minority, not the majority, and to market to mainstream, you need to make a commercial that even idiots will understand, which is exactly what they have did.- poxonyou, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5People know it exists. Mac ads air far more frequently than Vista ones, and many stores carry Macs now and have them on display. They just don't know enough about it. Their current ads hardly help. They give a lifestyle impression rather than how it's useful for the average user. The ad says, "If you're uncool, old, and corporate, you'll use Windows. If you're a cool twenty-something, you'll buy a Mac." The average user doesn't fit either and doesn't want to. They're assuming the average person WANTS to be the (smug, coffee shop) cool guy, and not the uncool guy. I doubt the average user wants to be either, and in some ways the "uncool guy" is more appealing (funny, likeable character and not smug). They never show the products, and occassionally name some software, but that means nothing to the viewer. "iLife? Wtf is that?"
Instead, they can still make cool ads, like the one in this article, but show users what OS X looks like and what it can do that the average user can relate to.- MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2> "but show users what OS X looks like and what it can do that the average user can relate to."
Exactly. Remember those HP digital photography commercials? Those were so cool! Apple need to do a commercial like that, then show someone using iPhoto on Mac OS X. The HP commercials were for their cameras and printers. But digital photography is so much more with Apple software.
- MScrip, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2> "but show users what OS X looks like and what it can do that the average user can relate to."

- mrwright613, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3they got it right with the iphone commercials, showing the interface and its uses and whatnot. why not incorporate the same idea into commercials for macs?
- elliotks, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4I think they should at least advertise at the end of their commercials to provide a base url, because if you haven't noticed a lot of software / hardware commercials really don't spend a lot of time showing all their features. Just making it seem like their product is awesome and let people research the product further.
- karolisonline, on 05/10/2008, -9/+7m.. viral marketing, delivered by apple and always perfect.

And yeah, because no other OS could possibly pull up a bunch of windows containing type, images, or video.- PabloMac, on 05/11/2008, -3/+3Of course Windows (I'll give in just this once) could "pull up a bunch of windows containing type, images, or video." My point related to the overall elegance of how OS X does it.
- soopafly, on 05/11/2008, -2/+5Windows couldn't pull this off. Too many popups.

- djcreamy, on 05/10/2008, -46/+67He originally tried to do this with Windows Vista, then Windows XP. Of course, the numbers of processes either froze the system by :30, or the track was repeated four times (again and again) so Windows could catch up (and it was all out of sync anyway).

Apple should use this officially! - bryantee, on 05/10/2008, -5/+2For some reason it gradually began to piss me off. Maybe because it looks like it would be so tedious to make.

- optimuscrime, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3There is a time and a place for torrents. When you hear a song in full and subsequently decide you want it, it's time to pony up $0.99
- Ellipsys, on 05/10/2008, -10/+17Okay... fine "desktop artistry" so to speak. However, I didn't see anything that would be unique to a Mac's desktop that he used to actually facilitate the 'art' to the video. The same damn thing could be done on Linux or Windows, easily enough. Appreciate the guy's work, folks - but to categorize it as being something special that could only be done on a Mac would be a fallacy.
- jeriqo, on 05/11/2008, -8/+3Of course Linux and Windows can do it too, they are Mac OS X clones.
- macricio, on 05/11/2008, -3/+6Easily enough!? well i would like to see you do it and let us see the result. it´s too easy to say easy...
- Ellipsys, on 05/11/2008, -2/+2I really shouldn't even justify a reply to someone named "macricio" with an apple logo for their icon, but honestly its really just common sense. If you look at all the programs that he uses for the video, there are equivalent programs on other OSes. Many are even cross platform. All of the devices he used (word processing, photo manip, webcam ) to create his artwork could be found on Windows or Linux, thus "easily enough". I don't want to take the time to try to imitate his artwork just to prove a point.
- soopafly, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2So to shut you up, this guy should do a version in Windows? No one ever said that this couldn't be done in any other OS.
- otis12, on 05/10/2008, -5/+9This should be a Mac commercial because it would be really kick ass
