- MacParrot, on 05/17/2009, -2/+10It hasn't even been 6 months yet. Getting well known artists on board and having them go through the long process of recording one of these lessons will take time.
- DatDudeWiggs, on 05/17/2009, -3/+11FREE BIRD!!!
- cerealjynx, on 05/17/2009, -3/+11If it really took off and there were worthwhile lessons, I'd totally get a midi keyboard and learn something new.
- sickbag69, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Because there's totally no other places on the internets to learn how to play music
- emptyo, on 05/17/2009, -1/+6I edited this comment, which was the dumbest one I've ever posted.
Move along now. Nothing to see here... - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5Apple TV + Handbrake + Your DVD Collection = No more scratched/broken discs (especially if you have a 2-3 year old)
- enantiodromia, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5I was really excited to see the concept of the Lesson Store. The only problem is, I just don't give a crap about any of the songs offered.
- Rudegar, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4recall something about riaa demanding some of those youtube lessons being removed because some copyrighted songs were being taught
pretty mad with power crazy - somnus, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4Oboe* =D
BTW, the oboe is used for a lot of sex scenes. It's the romantic stripping instrument. (Too bad for the musicians it doesn't work outside of film.) - dinkola, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4Its been more than 6months. They knew they where going to do it a long time before it was released to the public.
- 360modena, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4dugg for honesty.
- CyberSally, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3I feel the same way as the guy in this article. I thought the "lessons store" would have been a huge hit and another way for artists (and apple) to make some extra money outside of the RIAA. I am disappointed though that it hasn't taken off.
- emptyo, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Well, I had written how I had actually gone through the lessons and listened to them, and they were really helpful.
But then I thought..."who gives a ***** if I did that". And then I went and "***** myself", as I would have been undoubtedly instructed to do. - MacParrot, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2True, but in regular Apple fashion they didn't want most people to know what could be coming in an updated version of iLife. Also, these people don't typically do this for free, so many who might do it could be waiting to see what if any payment is forthcoming from Apple for doing this.
- borez, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2OK, now I'm intrigued.
- Niz1, on 05/17/2009, -5/+7shhh we don't talk about apple stuff that's not very successful, what apple TV?
- wilhoitm, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1I only got to lesson 3 on the keyboard before I got distracted... I also want Saxophone lessons! That would be great!
- nitriletiger, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1what ever happened to the one free rented movie a week apple promised?
- cerealjynx, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1Just high.
- tacojohn48, on 05/17/2009, -1/+2There are no girls on digg
- ghinwachannel, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1Free Bird.......this music is a very nice....
- KSUdesigner, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Price is their biggest problem. I've been wanting to get one, but I can't really justify paying $229 for something that basically just bridges the gap between my computer and television.
- reddikilowatt, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1I haven't tried this particular version of computerized music lessons, but I've used several in the past, from the light up Casio keyboards to full blown midi systems on PCs. The problem with all of them is the lack of "personality." They all just show notes you get right and wrong. Apple could do something really interesting with a Guitar Hero style system, but using real instruments.
Another problem is that it takes time to learn, and the basics are always the boring parts. Itsy-bitsy spider is boring, no matter how you try to learn it, but it has to be learned before you can play Chopin (or Zep). There's no computer program that will make it fun. - funkyloki, on 05/17/2009, -1/+2Unless you happen to play for a philharmonic.
- drunkenoaf, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Meh. I think the Apple TV is a little ahead of its time.
Once we all download all of our entertainment and forget about disks (and the price drops by $100), then it will make more sense. - zdiggler, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Go find a good instructor in your local neighbor hood!
- kinseyincanada, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1wait this is already out?
- jbarket, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Agreed. The vast majority of them are uninteresting, and those that are worth a ***** are generally the super insane expert tutorials. If I was capable of running through a tutorial at that level, I would think I could just... I don't know... get the damn tabs and strum pattern and do it myself.
- bigbangbuddha, on 05/17/2009, -1/+2While software and internet resources are decent for aiding in ones practice they are NOT a substitute for real instruction and playing with other musicians. In my opinion this kind of software is only interesting two types of people, but with caveats:
1. those who have no musical history whatsoever, so they can sit down and get a few notes and feel success. But It doesnt teach them how to think musically nor can it diagnose their problems and provide feedback. Get an instructor this is way more valuable; even a cheap $40 digital recorder will help you more.
2. Those that are already proficient with music and just want another way to aid in daily practice. But unfortunately the lessons are so introductory that this may would not be of much use. Specialized software like Ear Master may work much better for more advanced levels and theory training.
So unless they plan on creating a Pro line of software for advanced musicians, then I see no reason for them to put any more money or time into this.
BTW, I love macs, as a musician I use them extensively for recording and creating (but not iLife) , this is NOT a reason to go out and spend $2000 on a new machine. Spend $100 and get a few lessons first, if it sticks it will change your life, if it doesn't then you can spend that money on something else that will. - dizavin, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1you're kind of missing the point.
the lessons are aimed at people who just want to pick up an instrument and be shown how to play a song that they like proficiently enough to get through the whole thing without screwing up.
this is a common mistake that a lot of other audio specialists make all the bloody time: they think everyone with a guitar and a computer is looking to record an album. 90% of 'musicians' just want to know how to play their favourite tunes and having an avenue where the artists themselves guide you through playing the song you want? hell, that's worth WAY more than 5 dollars. it's a complete bargain as-is, especially when compared to looking online and finding Joe Internet's "this is how I THINK this song is played" website or youtube channel.
if Apple put some effort into it, this could be HUGE with amateur home musicians. - jbarket, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1While I like your idea, the problem is that nobody wants to learn your music.
- Tmannen, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Especially as PS3 and 360 do the same job with the added benefit of games.
- somnus, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Still doesn't work. You'd need an oboe punk band or something.
- LordofChaosIori, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1I love my AppleTV I haven't bought a DVD since and it's saved me a ton of dough. Thanks TPB! ;)
- willhaynes, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Let me stream Hulu/Netflix and I'm all in.
- quiescen, on 07/31/2009, -0/+1It's hard to find good music lessons on the web. I found a great (and somewhat unusual) piano lessons site at http://www.quiescencemusic.com Teaches you how to play piano in the New Age style.
- iericg, on 05/17/2009, -1/+1I'm just waiting for the lessons on how to play the cowbell.
- DulcetTone, on 05/17/2009, -0/+0Maybe it went to well once too often?
- Rudegar, on 05/17/2009, -4/+4I want my obo and or bassoon lessons
well I don't just find the names amusing :P - kelsij7n, on 05/17/2009, -0/+0I like the idea of the store and I would definitely take a lesson if there would be the songs I know well.
- svensksvamp, on 05/17/2009, -1/+1Maybe the music store didn't go to well? now, why waste money and time on a concept that doesn't work?
- muleskinner, on 05/17/2009, -2/+2not me.. but maybe its because I'[ve never bought music from itunes...
- ShyGuy91284, on 05/17/2009, -2/+2I blame it on poor marketing. I didn't even know about that part of the store until I had gotten a midi keyboard and was actually using garage band, which most people aren't going to end up doing. Not to mention it is playing music. Most people enjoy listening to music. Playing it on the other hand is something most say they have memories of from when they were a kid, or they pick up and quit fairly quickly. *Hopes he can stick with it*
- Xplorer, on 05/17/2009, -2/+2Who knew it was even there?
- DulcetTone, on 05/17/2009, -1/+0They need to open up the authoring tools for creating these lessons. I can figure out a Ben Folds song, probably, without his help. What would really excite me is if I could share MY MUSIC with others in an easily accessible way.
- MightyUpsetter, on 05/17/2009, -2/+1Everyone
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -1/+0I think Apple is testing the waters. Lots of people are doing music tutorials.
- tibbon, on 05/17/2009, -3/+1When I read the headline I thought, "what other store?"... so it appears I forgot about them too!
