- Protoss, on 03/31/2008, -2/+25I am hoping they come out this summer, with 32GB flash too. My HTC Wizard is good, but the iPhone is so much better, and with 32GB I can also store most of my music on there and retire my iPod.
- connorf, on 03/31/2008, -6/+29I'm going to buy one :)
- TommyBoy919, on 03/31/2008, -5/+16Its a shame that even when 3G is integrated with the iPhone, it's still AT&T's second-rate 3G. On average, Sprint and Verizon's networks are at least twice as fast. Its a shame Apple screwed us by picking the worst provider.
- redfan, on 03/31/2008, -2/+13Apple figured (correctly) that GSM was the way to go if they wanted to sell the iPhone internationally. T-Mobile is the other major GSM provider in the US, but they are much smaller than AT&T and don't currently have a 3G network anyways. That pretty much narrowed it down to AT&T.
- CLShortFuse, on 03/31/2008, -3/+13Btw, for those of you who Digg but don't read the article, the "evidence" that a 3G iPhone is coming in June 2008 is speculation and analyst predictions, nothing conretete. Good job digging this up. This is still guaranteed to hit front page though.
- luchid, on 03/31/2008, -3/+10Then why the ***** are you reading the Apple section, then opening articles and taking your time to comment?
- namelessXsilent, on 03/31/2008, -0/+63G iPhone will be the "premium" iPhone... Meaning its going to be crazy expensive. Everyone will complain its too much, but still buy it
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5They were never in short supply to begin with. Remember the fat ***** who tried to buy them all for resale and not only would they not let her, but they had plenty to go around?
Also I doubt a price drop will happen within 90 days. - nbcaffeine, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6dugg down for central time
- cleric04, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Cause CDMA networks are so popular.
- LilBoyLuver, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5I would hardly say that the current model will be obsolete with the release of a 3G iPhone.
- redfan, on 03/31/2008, -4/+9Or those of us who already have 3G phones in the US, like me. As nice as the iPhone is, no way I'm ever going back to those dial-up speeds.
- wrestlingnrj, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6Verizon was actually Apple's first choice, but they turned Apple down.
- CarzorStelatis, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4The lack of 3G is the reason the iPhone hasn't done very well in Europe (borderline flop). It's just ubiquitous here (far more widespread, and more reliable, than in the US due to Europe's relatively urbanised population), and a smartphone without 3G capability is, to Europeans, like an mp3 player having a headphone socket - it meets with "wtf is the point of that" reactions.
- SnuKs, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4I love how current iphone users on the iphone boards try to debunk everything associated with a 3G iphone as if to feel less retarded for buying an iphone so close to a 3G release.
I'm sure we'll see a flood of EDGE iphones on ebay during the summer. - DavX, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4I don't know what phone you think has a better mobile browser, but I sure as hell haven't seen anything to rival it yet. Lack of Flash and Java is a problem, but aisde from that, I can't see anything better.
- cawpin, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5Actually, Verizon screwed us. They had first dibs and passed. I'm a Verizon customer and have been for a very long time. There's no way I'm switching to AT&T for a phone but damn it Verizon, stop being stupid.
- armas89, on 03/31/2008, -2/+6I'm going to wait for sure.
- dlehman, on 03/31/2008, -2/+5For the love of bacon, please let us have the iPhone up here in Canada... (Remember us Steve, your friendly neighbors to the north?)
- saisumimen, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4The difference being that the US telecom companies received several billion dollars in taxpayer dollars in order to build up their infrastructure to keep up with the likes of Sweden, Japan, etc.
Instead, they pocketed the cash and made us all look stupid. U-S-A!! - teh_spazz, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3Tell me a better browser, please.
- luchid, on 03/31/2008, -3/+6Yeah and Intel and AMD screw us by developing newer and faster CPUs each month! And damn Ford for upgrading their models each year!
- Yousty, on 03/31/2008, -2/+5Where the hell is GPS, Steve?
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3Rogers is very evil, but Bell isn't very far behind.
- mysticjim, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2just curious, why would Bank of America have any inside info on a possible 3G iPhone????
- ferrite, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Never underestimate the purchasing power of a foolish American wielding a $600 tax rebate mailing the same month.
- turbo2ltr, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2This is true. Last year I worked for ATT as a contractor adding capacity to the Nokia base stations all over the southwest in anticipation for the iPhone release. If you guys knew how bad the 3G network is (at least around here) you wouldn't be so excited about a 3g iPhone. Lucent 3G base stations suck. But I do know that over the past few months they have been adding additional T1s to the 3G network..
- MacParrot, on 03/31/2008, -2/+4Hmmm, looking at map of Sweden...looking at map of the US. What seems to be the difference here?
- redtornado, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3I cannot wait for the 3G. Even now my iPhone is in the top ten coolest things I have ever owned.
- HolyChimp, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3As someone has stated above, a 3G iPhone would be more for us folks in Europe, and those in Asia , where 3G is available just about everywhere. It's just a nice bonus that America would get it too.
Also, the UK had no EDGE network before the iPhone came here, o2 built one specially for the iPhone, so that's no indication that an iPhone coming to Japan is guaranteed 3G.
On an unrelated note, I wonder how buying the new iPhone and continuing the current 18 month contract will work, if I wanted a new iPhone before my 18 months are up. - RajAtWork, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2from what I know, it is only held up by ATT not having enough 3G capacity at the moment. They are currently rolling out tons of new cell hardware in anticipation of network traffic spike proportional to what GPRS/Edge experienced last year.
- Protoss, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2I don't see Apple making 2 models of the iPhone, much more manufacturing costs to make 2 entirely diff chipsets.
- theOster, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3should've said "spacific time" - that means it starts "spacifically at 8"
- mrsteve007, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3I was testing/benchmarking my ATT 3G connection (on an HTC 8525) this weekend. I get 1500kb/sec down and 350kb/sec up with a 300 ping, in Seattle. That is twice as fast as I've seen it before. I think ATT is tweaking their speeds. Not too bad in my opinion, except for the ping, it's as fast as my cable internet at home.
I don't know what speeds Sprint or Vorizon are, but 1.5mb is nothing to scoff about. - mlostracco, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2For those who don't know how evil Rogers is:
http://torontoist.com/2008/02/unlimited_meani.php - Protoss, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2What phone allows you to reflash and still have your warranty? None that I know of.
- codewater, on 03/31/2008, -2/+3It was sooo many years ago Sweden got over 90% 3G coverage... American providers really stink :)
- luchid, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Why not? It has the best mobile browser out there, excellent email app, best iPod ever (most people's music collection could probably fit in the 16 GB model).
- ferrite, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I don't know, Apple could always find a cute name to differentiate it without saying what network technology it uses.
Apple iPhone Extreme... Express... Turbo.... and for the Japanese release Type R - JosephDurnal, on 03/31/2008, -7/+8"We cared a lot about battery life and we cared a lot about physical size. Down the road, I'm sure some of those tradeoffs will become more favorable towards 3G but as of now we think we made a pretty good doggone decision."
Yeah right - they cared about selling everybody a newer and faster iPhone in two years. How else would you get someone to part with their device? Built in obsolescence. - inactive, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Dugg for use of "conretete."
- daborg, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1The difference here is that the US has 50% more people per land area, which means 50% more customers per 3G area covered, which means that it should be much more feasible for US companies to upgrade to 3G than for Swedish companies.
- 12340987, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1why does apple need a loan?
- Marlic, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1maybe b/c that's where apple gets their money from, you know a loan.
- mitch37, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1I'm not digging you down, intresting read.
- shushimeng, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1patiently waits...
- Protoss, on 03/31/2008, -2/+3But Apple is ***** brilliant!
- ep53, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2Now that prices are coming down i was gonna buy an iPhone with next months salary, and was really worried about this.....Now all i have to do is wait....Another 7 months for price to come down on iPhone 2 :-(
