- chickenloco, on 10/21/2008, -7/+89This could have been huge for Apple. But,
1) They raise the prices on the new Macbooks, even while the economy is falling: people don't have the money to spend.
2) No Matte display on the Pro? These are notebooks, Apple. They are meant to be used on the go and outside. The glossy display ain't gonna work for a majority of professionals, the ones who will buy the Pro.
3) A speed bump wouldn't have hurt on the MB's, either. - spargett, on 10/22/2008, -15/+64I just purchased the new Macbook Pro. I’m incredibly disappointed by how insanely stiff the key’s and trackpad button are.
Its the most uncomfortable Apple product I've used since the beige boxes. Not to mention loud, especially the trackpad button CLICK-CLACK. I have no idea how I’d use this at a coffee shop without getting dirty looks.
I returned the machine. They were very sympathetic to my reasoning at the store, expressing that many of the employees didn’t purchase one for that very reason. They even waved the restocking fee. No matter how much I wanted it to be, it just wasn’t for me.
I could have lived with new keyboard, which was also stiff and rather noisy, or the glossy, which made me appreciate the comforting matte display, but the trackpad button noise was unacceptable. - jrm125, on 10/22/2008, -4/+28Bought the last gen MacBook Pro in August. Glad I did. These new ones have crappier battery life, look uglier, don't perform much better, and what's the deal with the glossy screen!?
- jmuh, on 10/22/2008, -0/+22Look, he didn't want to get dirty looks at the coffee shop!!
- Lionhart, on 10/22/2008, -6/+23I really really REALLY hate the black keyboard on aluminum.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/22/2008, -5/+22"Some users will find the glass screens distracting -- we did -- and that's more than a minor niggle when you're talking about something you'll use for years that costs $2000."
Years? Don't you mean "until the next model comes out?" - SuperHyperKid, on 10/22/2008, -10/+26Seriously? You returned it because of a loud click noise when you click the trackpad? I can think of many reasons to return a notebook, or to purchase one over another, but button clickyness seems kinda outlandish.
- cmer, on 10/22/2008, -6/+20So am I the only one who LOVES his new Macbook? This is my 5th mac and it's the one I like the best so far. I own the external bluetooth keyboard and it's great to have the same keyboard on the laptop (had a MBP before). The screen is much better than expected. Not a big fan of glossy, but it hasnt been a problem for me. the LED backlit display really helps i think.
Did I mention it's pretty darn fast too? - nailer, on 10/22/2008, -0/+13I'm actually typing this on my HP dv2000 in Starbucks near Embankment Station, London.
I'm not sure what you wrote as the screen's damn shiny. I'm sitting near the window, and there's a light on the ceiling behind me.
But I'm glad the finally Mac users get to enjoy this annoying ***** too. - chickenloco, on 10/22/2008, -0/+10YES lol
- Dagolith, on 10/22/2008, -0/+10I love how people insult the guy for having an objectionable opinion. So ***** what.
- MikeCerm, on 10/22/2008, -0/+10Apple always charges a restocking fee.
- inactive, on 10/22/2008, -6/+15Glossy display and weird trackpad button = Not buying.
- joeyvesh13, on 10/22/2008, -7/+16Poor people are such haters.
- Wooaha, on 10/22/2008, -2/+11Don't the blackbooks only come with a glossy screen?
- collution, on 10/22/2008, -2/+11I must say, the keys on the new MB's are awful loud. You can't take this thing to the library without getting a couple of looks :/.
- Chiefster, on 10/22/2008, -2/+10This F'n laptop (MB 13") is awesome, you'll find it on my lap being awesome. If you see it, watch for the glare while I'm having an awesome time!
- BossKey, on 10/22/2008, -0/+8No, actually I have owned 4 Mac laptops since 1992. That's 16/4, or 4 years each...average. Some got replaced sooner, some later.
My last one, a PowerBook G4, almost went *5* years before I finally caved and bought a MacBook Pro, and that 5-year-old PowerBook was still being used for daily production with current software, thanks to having upgraded the RAM and HD over the years. I helped a friend install the latest OS, Leopard, on her PowerBook G4 of the same age with 1GB RAM, and she uses it every day. So how well does a 5-year-old PC laptop with 1GB RAM run Vista?
I have also owned two Mac desktops. One went 7 years, I got my current one two years ago and it doesn't even feel close to old, and I haven't come close to maxing out all the slots and bays.
This is a big reason you find that Macs typically have better resale value. They stay usable longer. - Rockkybox, on 10/22/2008, -0/+7***** tap to click, its horrible
- Stegg, on 10/22/2008, -0/+7I never get tired of listening to people bitch about the price of Macs. It's as puzzling as hearing someone bitch about the price of BMW's would be.
- digitalpencil, on 10/22/2008, -0/+6^ got to agree with the resale value.. it's really the one saving grace with Apple products, they just don't depreciate as fast as other alternatives. I sold my iBook 4 years down the line for £300 less than i bought it and my current MBP which i bought for £1050 almost a year and a half ago is currently on eBay for £890.
when you factor in that resale value, upgrading next year won't leave such a scorching hole in my pocket.. - bbardlbradd, on 10/22/2008, -1/+7I'm not sure about how squishy you like your keyboards, the MBP doesn't bother me.
Also, about the touchpad not having a button, it's seriously not that bad at all. In fact, when I first started ***** around w/ it, I didn't realize there wasn't a button until I walked away.
The trackpad extends to the point where the button used to be, so if you use your thumb to click, like I do, your thumb will still be clicking down on the same place, and it will function the same.
The only issue that I had was, because it's longer now too, I would have a finger resting on the trackpad that normally wouldn't be on the trackpad. Something that I could get used to. The buttonless touchpad really functions the same way the old one did, but there is no separate button.
Last week I was complaining about the touchpad and the glossy display, now that I've seen one, these things aren't a problem (And I'm not being biased, I would as soon pick up the earlier model Macbook Pro if the new ones sucked). - Wooaha, on 10/22/2008, -0/+6I have to turn around to look in class a couple of times to see what people are banging on that's so ***** loud. It's like they are typing on one of those keyboards they made for the ps2.
- Gloony, on 10/22/2008, -0/+6If I'm shelling out cash for two graphics cards, then yes!
If you're going to have two then why not one low end and a high end, not a low end and a mid range. - inactive, on 10/22/2008, -1/+6Don't click it and comment on it if you don't care
- Antialias, on 10/22/2008, -0/+5I love mine as well. I don't know where they are getting the loud keyboard and trackpad clicks. I'm using it right now in the room with my sleeping wife and it's much quieter than my desktop mouse or keyboard. Overall the best mac I've owned so far.
- Gloony, on 10/22/2008, -2/+6On the subject of speed bump: why can't we have a top of the line mobile GPU for once? Having to buy an OEM solution to get a performance laptop sucks.
I'd happily pay more for a better graphics card. - cdawzrd, on 10/22/2008, -3/+7What, for gaming and CAD? You really want to buy a MBP for that?
- GreenAlien, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4I agree with Gloony. A better graphics card wouldnt hurt. The 9600m GT is practically the same as the 8600m GT thats been used the past couple of years. A hardly noticable speed bump on a slightly smaller die that's all. A 256 bit graphics card would be welcome. The blame is probably more with nVidia though. They've been dragging their feet the last couple of years and it probably isnt practical to put one of their higher end cards in thin form factor like the macbook pro yet. One or two more die shrinks maybe...
- aydoubleyou, on 10/22/2008, -1/+5Also... the stiffness of the trackpad eventually gets broken in.
Ive noticed mine is a bit easier to click than it was when I first pulled it out of the box. - rjinso, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4"arguably the most anticipated laptop release in recent memory" (with recent memory being the last time apple updated its laptops, which is oh so long ago)
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 10/22/2008, -2/+6You've definitely expanded the message that you posted on MacThemes.
- digitalpencil, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3agreed.. the chiclet keyboards are meant to be excellent and a definite improvement on the older model but i just love the older, all gray keyboard.. that said, i still use an IBM model M ;)
- vocalyouth, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3the 17" is the old model.
- Mithivh, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3In this case, poor AND average people are such haters.
- fowleryo, on 10/22/2008, -1/+4thank you, i had just written my annoyance with the trackpad sound off as ocd...
- wolfboyZ, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3I'll admit I'm really impressed with the engineering and design. Not initially, but after a couple hours...then I tried it out myself today at the Apple store.
The glossy-only display is a definite deal breaker. The trackpad is very awkward to use. It functions the same way as if the clicker was still there, but it just feels empty without it. My thumb kept trying to find a place to rest only to find nothing was there. The precision of clicking is very low. When you press down into the trackpad, the mouse icon slightly moves. It's a little bit more precise if you click with your thumb, but still isn't as precise as with a button. You'd no doubt get used to it, but I still don't think it'd be as effective. It's sort of like what they did with the Mighty Mouse, worst mouse of all time.
If it weren't for these two big drawbacks, I'd gladly switch, but as of now, I'm kind of glad I stll have the old model. - RealHyperX, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3How do you guys like the no button track pad? Is it easy to get used to?
- bigmrjohn, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3I'm with you, I'm a photographer and I need the matte screen. I do editing on my MBP now but I will not be getting a new one anytime soon. Glossy = False colors on the screen.
- flammablewater, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3So a valid counter point is being dug down? no one likes an apple fanboy, but that's not what his post is about.
- digitalpencil, on 10/22/2008, -1/+4^ i don't think i could live with a 17".. it'd be like lugging around a paving slab. that said, i use external monitors so the increased screen estate isn't really an issue.
- 1nhuman, on 10/22/2008, -2/+4If you don't like glossy, the 17" pro comes with a matte screen. Now I guess 17" is not for everyone (that's what she said), but personally I prefer it (that's what she said).
- lifeimages, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2Memory alone will not help gaming! The new MacBook has "Up to 5x faster NVIDIA graphics performance" over the white model. Multi-touch is a lot better then old track pad. LED Backlit. Ability to easily replace HD to a Flash Drive (when they become cheaper).
- VideoGameMatt, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2It still has a button in it. its in the same location as before but all apple did was extend the trackpad for more room. so the button is now hidden
- smakusdod, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2hahaah, i laughed.
- nipterink, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2arstechnica seems to disagree with you.
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/2008-macbo ...
..."In a properly light-controlled environment (without which there is zero point in talking about professional work), with all tech specs being equal, and with properly calibrated screens, a glossy LCD is going to outperform a matte one every time. This is particularly evident in the higher contrast a glossy screen provides, the deeper blacks are what give it the richer look people often comment on when first exposed to a glossy display. Like any consumer tech this can be abused and cranked up to impress people in stores, but no pro uses a screen the way it comes out of the box."
glare is one issue. but the color accuracy issue people seem to be tossing around seems false. - guybrush, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2I went in to the Apple store in the same boat as you. I walked out with the new MacBook. It looks amazing, much sturdier next to the white one - and feels sturdier too. This thing zips along, and the trackpad makes life worth living. I don't regret spending the extra cash.
- SwitchXFactor, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2Who's to say the functionality of that is exactly equal to that of the clicking function? I can't say from experience but I'm willing to bet it's much less precise...
- dieboldcracy, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2double dugg for swagger, and being awesome
