- WiseWeasel, on 11/14/2008, -0/+52Warning: The article implies that PdaNet is free, but as of the latest release, version 1.40, PdaNet is now trialware, and it will deactivate all functionality except HTTP forwarding after the trial period is up unless you fork over $29 for a license. This means that it will still work for web browsing (as long as you don't need to browse any secure HTTPS sites), but not for instant messaging, email, P2P, or any other web protocols. The article should be updated to clarify this. Shame on PdaNet for not being more forthright about this limitation in their software.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=66004 ... - vtron, on 11/14/2008, -0/+27Wow ATT has some brass balls. Where do they get off charging you twice for the same data? Unbelievable.
- prefixmag, on 11/14/2008, -2/+16$30 a month seems a bit much. I'll be using this guide.
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+12ATT can suck my balls.
- consumerwhores, on 11/14/2008, -2/+14BOO-URNS!
- themonkman, on 11/14/2008, -1/+13Just because a phone uses an opensource OS like Android does not mean that TMobile will give you free reign to modify or use the device in any way you want. Many parts of the iPhone OS are opensource, as well (BSD license, not necessarily GPL). If AT&T thinks they can get away with charging $30 for tethering, I doubt it would be long until the other carriers decide they want a piece of the profits, too.
- Archon810, on 11/14/2008, -0/+11your http proxy is dead. local shot it at around 11:20 today.
- shredswithpiks, on 11/14/2008, -0/+11Which is still a rip since the data is going through the same pipe you already pay for... in my opinion :/
This is kind of like when cable internet tried to charge more depending on how many computers you had on your network, isn't it? - Zippo, on 11/14/2008, -0/+11I'm already paying Rogers $30/month for my iPhone's data plan... I'm not forking out any more for essentially nothing.
- GOVATENT, on 11/14/2008, -0/+10you now realise this? What about the international data plan? My boss ditched his BB to go with an iphone. The week after I see him with his old BB again. Because we do a lot of retail work in Mexico he needs international data. He would have had to pay 2 times his phone bill for limited international data. ATT can go to hell.
- andrewdevlin, on 11/14/2008, -4/+12boo hoo. i trust lifehacker more than you.
- ryleyleckie, on 11/14/2008, -1/+9it's ridiculous that at&t is going to charge their customers for using data in a different way. if you have a data plan that you pay for, it shouldn't matter how you use that data.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/14/2008, -0/+8Wow, I thought pdanet only worked for simple http forwarding. Thanks for the heads up!
- RobotBuddha, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7You should always be able to revert back using the current methods. It's a bit of a pain to do the first time, but once you're used to the procedure you can apply it to new updates pretty easily. The advantages are 'huge'. In particular, being able to run programs from the app store in the background is nice. Not that it always works on all programs, but letting music players get out of the way and just play music while you do other things is really nice. Video recording, better options for taking pictures, there's really a ton of great stuff on there.
- GothAlice, on 11/14/2008, -1/+8ssh -D 1080 root@iPhone.local
HTTP Proxy: localshot:1080
SOCKS Proxy: localhost:1080
Works for me! - JudgeMonkey, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7Don't even need to RTFA, RingTF description would suffice. That's some serious ADD though.
- FreddieD, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7From what I read, the mechanism for flashing firmware is completely separate of the firmware itself, so even if the power went out in your house during a firmware flash, there is no permanent bricking your phone.
- wallryan, on 11/14/2008, -2/+8i was saying BOO-URNS
- superkendall, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6$30 is way excessive to allow tethering. That may well drive people to jailbrake phones left and right... or to WiMax for laptops.
What I'd like to see is someone release the source for a tethering app, so that anyone with a dev account could tether. - species, on 11/14/2008, -1/+7I know someone who is a manager over at an at&t call center and he said he has seen people who have tethered their iphones slapped with fairly large charges (around $500) added for tethering. He did mention that they will usually remove the charges if you call them, but you never know. Basically he said if you're going to do it, don't do it very often because they can tell they you're doing it.
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6Big companies ***** suck. It's only a matter of time before the whole world has free internet across any device that they want. That will be true freedom.
- Vektuz, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6Amusing, because the only reason AT&T they could have a problem with this is if they intend to sell you something you already have. Which they do. So they want to take it away from first, so that they can sell it back to you at a premium.
- 11oops, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6RTFA. They are, but they're charging $30/mo for the capability. This method is free (or close to free).
- FreddieD, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6In case the rumor of ninja charging for PDANet 1.4 is true, here's the link to the previous version... get it while ya can. AFAIK, there's no noticeable difference in end user functionality between the two versions.
http://modmyi.com/repo/2debs/pdanet1.33.deb - inactive, on 11/14/2008, -1/+6We await examples of your better options.
- Bots, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5note - these aren't my instructions - but they did help me revert to 1.33 (free and open) - more info http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=66004 ...
If you want version 1.33, do a google search for "modmyi repo." Click the first link you see, then click "debs2" (or 2debs, or whatever). Scroll down until you see pdanet1.33.deb, right click it and save to your computer.
Then, SSH that into your phone and drop pdanet1.33.deb into /var/root/.
Using MobileTerminal (get if off Cydia if you have to) type in "su," then type in your password, which is "alpine" by default. Then type in the command dpkg -i /var/root/pdanet1.33.deb. Wait for it to get done.
Then restart/respring your phone. This method works as of 11/13. - ramsinks.com, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5Um, you trust them more than him for the same obvious and accurate tech article?
you have issues or you don't understand the tech.. - orvtech, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4How the EFF will ATT know that you tether ? besides unusual spikes of traffic? but if you just used it every night to surf the web, post on digg.com and check the lotto, who would they know ?
- zbeast, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4ATT's charging you more are they also giving you 10gig's download cap.
5 gig's for the phone and 5 gig's for the tethering feature or does the 5 gig cap come out of the same download limit.
it really doesn't matter to me.. because I'm not paying extra for a data plan that I already have with the phone. - Shambla, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4I tethered at my old work to circumvent Websense and get around port blocks...
- mos6507, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4This is an iPhone, not a crippled candybar phone running a wap browser. The iPhone can already consume lots of bandwidth. It can stream video and audio over the web, and browse full webpages. Unless you are planning to run bittorrent on your laptop you probably wouldn't use that much more data than an iphone could.
- Invid, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4You can still grab a PDAnet 1.3 deb from Softpedia prior to the trialware *****, so get it while it's hot. I have no problem with them charging, but I was pissed to update and see nothing about the change in the changelog.
- ramsinks.com, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4It's simple to do. If you mess up, you just "restore" and you back up.
The FUD of bricks is from UNLOCKING not Jailbreaking. - inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4No they cant, they are bluffing. The just flag people with large amounts of transfer rate and assume they are tethering.
- orvtech, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3thats what i though, they will be checking for that sort of HTTP headers and protocols that the iphone is not suppose to use (ssh, ftp, smb, etc...).
In my case i have allways been paranoic about this kind of stuff (Note... the fact that im paranoic does not mean that they are not really out to get me) so i change my browser to send:
"Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20"
as ID on the HTTP header.
but even that. what if i am using another browser in my phone, lets say that i manage to compile and get Firefox working on my iPhone. that does not mean that i am tethering necessarily. - kkiran, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Wow, I get dugg down for stating a fact too... Thank you guys!
- FreddieD, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Just tried it, and 1.33 works fine with TightVNC.
- FreddieD, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3If nothing else, they could check your browser version when you initiate HTTP connections.
I think the bigger question is, how will ATT know that you tether *with an iPhone*. Right now I can take my SIM out, put it into my Treo 650 and tether til my heart's content, 100% free and 100% legal (legal in the sense that I am not using any hacked firmware, just plain jane Windows Mobile 6). - arjie, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3See, I live in India, and the best we have is EDGE. Still, I can't help but laugh when I see this *****.
With a standard Nokia phone, all you have to do is get your SIM card from your operator, get a data plan, and use the Nokia software to connect (Nokia has a program with all the settings for your operator, for Linux some people have copied the relevant settings).
Why do you guys pay for _everything_, man? - TehDoctor, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3The horror stories are mostly before Pwnage tool was released. Problems after that are mostly from total morons who can't follow the instructions. Don't worry about bricking it and jailbreak it. You'll get more apps, video recording, free music players, the ability to download and play any formats (including a player that is a total replacement for the iphone player with the same interface). You can browse and download stuff on seeqpod and vtap. And more.
There are also other tethering apps in the jailbreak that are not trialware. - miriv365, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3PDANet worked great for me, but I had to stop using it. I needed to keep my phone on the charger because it would drain the battery in a couple of hours... Then my phone would get hot... and I eventually noticed that the battery indicator was just messed up. It would show a full charge, but as soon as you unplugged it, it would show a charge of 0%. My guess is the battery would fail to charge if it got hot. I reported it to PDANet, and they were looking into it, not sure if they fixed it.
- GeneralFault, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3There really is no need. Most operating systems today come with the software necessary to create a router. AT&T disables this feature on phones that it sells, but at least on Windows Mobile phones, re-enabling it is a snap.
- superkendall, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3They are now free for iPhone users.
- ngmcs8203, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Great, thanks for the tips. I've got myself a project for the weekend.
- nesagwa, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Most of the starbucks Ive ever been in have "free" AT&T hotspots that you have to pay extra AT&T to use.
- fluxion, on 11/15/2008, -1/+3when you dont have free wireless nearby but need to use your laptop?
- kkiran, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Andrew : Trust LifeHacker for publishing false info? ... PDANet 1.40 is not free anymore! You have to revert back to v 1.33 using some terminal hackery not published by them which I did already! Trust the content buddy :)
- whuddadumbsn, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Much like ATT may charge an extra $30/month to tether your phone to your computer, Verizon has already implemented such a plan... and I think that they are charging something to the tune of an extra $20 on top of the $50/month data plan.
I've used PDANet for my Palm (yeah, I know my phone and carrier both suck, thanks -- but not my decision) for a while. It works very well. Since I don't download anything significant or use it too often, Verizon hasn't yelled at me, yet... - inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Thats normal, and you are correct that the battery stops charging if it gets to hot. Same thing has happened a few times with my WM phone while I tether (but its rare, only happened a few times during long WoW sessions and I tether every day). But once my phone stops charging it quickly cools down and then starts to charge again.
- NippleNutz, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Tethering works for the Android in a limited fashion already. Even with the WinMo phones T-mobile does not charge extra for tethering. T-mobile is not going to provide a tethering app for the G1 but they said they have no problem with one.
