- mtdna, on 10/27/2009, -18/+50Too bad it's:
41% To-Do lists
63% Restaurant finders
30% Tip calculators
11% Sudoku puzzles
29% Foreign-language dictionaries
18% Dumb-ass Guitar Hero knock-offs.
Total: 192% crap - th3heretic, on 10/27/2009, -13/+4390,000 crappy apps and counting.
- martinlucas, on 10/27/2009, -14/+41That puts all other smart phone app stores to shame surely.
- Awwzm, on 10/27/2009, -10/+30Of the 100,000, how many are actually good?
- rolf, on 10/27/2009, -5/+25You could say that about anything:
movies
games
programs for a full-size computer
There are a lot of niche apps that a common person won't appreciate, but there is definitely an audience for like medical students or people learning another language (something like human japanese), or I use an app to take credit cards without an expensive terminal which most people don't need. - fireashes, on 10/27/2009, -11/+29The main thing is approved. And yet there is no opera, the world's most popular mobile browser. Did i hear google voice?
Hey I am not anti apple. I thank them for bringing the apps to the cell phone. The apps were controlled by the service providers. Their native apps were crappy and suck money like it was a free lunch.
Apple you have opened the floodgate of apps but please dont try to close the gate for the innovation. - mmcgrath, on 10/27/2009, -7/+23Apple Store breaks the 100,000 "We'll decide what applications are good for our users" mark!
- MacParrot, on 10/27/2009, -5/+19And yet developers keep making them and submitting them. I wonder why? Oh yeah, because it seems to work out well for developers mostly, the end users, and Apple.
That's not to say that an open development option isn't a great thing too. It seems to be working well for some of the other platforms, but just because Apple isn't leaning that way doesn't make it a bad thing either. - wild, on 10/27/2009, -10/+23Wait, so what is better? Having a smaller number of useful, productive and efficient apps, or having thousands of apps that are mostly average?
I ask because for years PC fanboys have bagged on Mac fanboys that OS X doesn't have as much software available, but now that the iPhone outshines all others in the number of apps, it's not worth mentioning.
Double standards much? - endustry, on 10/27/2009, -4/+14more like 99,000 crappy apps.
- MacParrot, on 10/27/2009, -0/+9Couldn't that be said for just about any platform?
- mogebier, on 10/27/2009, -6/+1593,000 aps.
90,000 are fart sound makers.
The ones that are actually good, are almost impossible to find unless you know what the name is from someone else having them already. - mbst2000, on 10/27/2009, -5/+14Oh let's see-

So that's a few off the top of my head. I use all of them on a regular basis. And techdever, so there's 1000 useful apps then? Great! Sounds like more than I'll ever need. The complaining about stories like this is laughable.
Whether you like it or not, the app store has revolutionised the mobile industry. Before you were stuck with useless crap and user-unfriendly downloads from mobile operators, now everyone's offering an app store, because they have to compete. Whether apps have been available for Windows mobiles or whatever before the app store is not the point, Apple did it right and now everyone else has to up their game. - M3tALHaz3, on 10/27/2009, -5/+13When you think that about hundreds or thousands of those apps are similar to things like fart machines, virtual lighters/flashlights, alarm clocks.....that number kinda loses it's impressivness...
- sousademiami, on 10/27/2009, -2/+9Of those, how many are "Racing Live - 20 Prestige points" or "iMobsters - 40 Favor Points" and the thousands of variations of those games and others like them?
- lepton, on 10/27/2009, -0/+7With all those apps, it's getting super hard to find the great ones. I think the more apps the better, but as the numbers rise it becomes more and more important to have good ways to search for and browse through apps. I think we need to see improvements in that regard when it comes to the App Store.
I've placed four apps in the store. My first, EMailContact, was easy to find. My latest and best, Myallo HotList http://myallo.com/hotlist is very hard to find. It was a mere flash on the What's New page because so many apps are new each day. And getting reviews or mentions anywhere is tough for two reasons; reviewers are overwhelmed with apps, and the big companies now have aps, and they have PR departments, money, people and resources to push and advertise their stuff all day. - dagamer34, on 10/27/2009, -16/+23How many of those apps are actually useful? I ask because Apple will approve almost anything if you jump through a few hoops.
- SimbaK2K, on 10/27/2009, -7/+14Maths fail
- Vecta1, on 10/27/2009, -6/+12I'm not sure why your comment was buried. It's not much of an accomplishment when the majority of apps are fairly useless and puerile, there are some that are only entertaining for a day or two, and yet an even smaller number that are persistently useful/entertaining.
- mtdna, on 10/27/2009, -4/+10Which one of the 473 calculator apps did you use to figure that out?
- sklassen, on 10/27/2009, -1/+7I think he's getting buried because regardless of the apps' utilities, Apple has managed to create a unique and dominate presence with the app store.
Similarly, the internet is still a wonderful place even though it's mostly filled with utter garbage. - mmcgrath, on 10/27/2009, -1/+6It does for now, but soon the android will be on far more phones, in more markets with lower barriers to develop. You do the math.
- inactive, on 10/27/2009, -2/+7It's amazing how a person can come off as so authoritative on a certain subject without actually knowing anything about it simply by stating something like they believe it.
- Haax, on 10/27/2009, -1/+6People are stupid. There are millions upon millions of websites. Does that mean you're going to stop using the internet because it's "flooded"?
- appleKKK, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5as an app developer, im starting to wonder if the iphone actually will dominate the smartphone market...like it dominated the MP3player market
- rayskin, on 10/27/2009, -4/+8This title sucks, I thought Apple literally broke 100k applications
- tiroger, on 10/27/2009, -2/+6Wish they'd approve just 2 apps:
1. Google Voice (I have 3 numbers and would be cool to have a centralized way of handling all of them on my iPhone)
2. Native Gmail (the iPhone mail is really lacking in features, e.g. threads, unified mailbox...
Don't really care for fart apps and tip calculators which seem to make up about 50% of the apps available. - eric1, on 10/27/2009, -2/+6The people complaining about the App Store's app quality obviously haven't used it. Any other platform would be lucky to have the quality and number of applications that the App Store has and to pretend otherwise is stupid. It's a big competitive advantage.
- sklassen, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4So... there's at least 1,000 good apps, right?
How many apps do you use on your computer? Surely 1,000 apps is more than enough for your phone. - dagamer34, on 10/27/2009, -1/+5Yep, 18 Android phones by the end of this year and 52 Android phones by the end of 2010. All each phone needs to sell is 1/20th of whatever Apple sells to make an equally compelling platform.
- bvskoog, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4Do other smartphone "App Stores" have a higher percentage of "useful" apps than the app store? And even if a big majority of apps are pointless (which they are), how does having a large selection of pointless apps instead of a small selection of them hurt the app store? If it were a brick and mortar store and you had to wade through 100 iFarts and 200 iFlashlights to find a Recipe Manager or a Medical App, that would be a problem, but in a searchable, virtual store like the App Store, higher numbers of apps, if not good for everyone, don't hurt anyone.
- bobbyklinger, on 10/27/2009, -3/+71. 90% of them suck
2. Multiple of the same app (free version, lite version, etc) - inactive, on 10/27/2009, -1/+4You're not that far off the mark. There's a Cult of Mac and there's a Cult of Anti-Mac... and there's no getting through to either of them.
- Haax, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3Screw implying...
Android won't hit 100,000 apps. - insidiousraven, on 10/27/2009, -5/+8who cares
- MWeather, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3"You think most of them care whether or not it's an open or closed platform? Really?"
You think they don't care than months of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars can be rendered useless on a whim? - Iwantawii, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3Don't call me Shirley.
- FLCProductions, on 10/27/2009, -1/+4Thats a ***** load of apps!
- jonahan52, on 10/27/2009, -1/+4Oh so you're gonna just change your battery in two years when your contract is up instead of getting the new phone? Riiiiight.
- MWeather, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2"Except that Windows has not only more programs, but more useful programs."
Not if you count the userspace apps. Gotta love sed, awk, cat, etc. - saikyan, on 10/27/2009, -3/+5Wow. That's some amazingly arbitrary decision making. What are you so intimidated by? I support both on a daily basis, and while both camps have their zealots, most people are just trying to use their computers as tools. Why let a user base prevent you from exploring options and having a broader base of knowledge?
That's like refusing to visit a city because you once met someone from that city who you didn't like. - HavocStyles, on 10/27/2009, -6/+8And twice as many rejected!!! =)
- paulsmith288, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2gmail app on android is really good.
Wasn't worth me swapping my iphone for an android one - but was a nice little bonus.
Standard use of memory cards and no need to use iTunes is worth it. - MethodOne, on 10/27/2009, -2/+4The only thing called Firefox in the iTunes Store, excluding podcasts, is the Clint Eastwood movie of that name because Apple doesn't allow browsers with other rendering engines.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2What a surprise.
- bobasaurus, on 10/27/2009, -3/+5Yep, my app got buried immediately after release by the ***** of others accepted at the same time. Well, I guess I can always shamelessly plug it here:
[shamelessplug]
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/ ...
[/shamelessplug] - paulsmith288, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2+1 for Opera mobile or mini.
iphone you cant upload files with web browser. Android (or perhaps HTCs) default browser ditto. Opera mini you can. - MacParrot, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2What? Where did I imply that Android (or any other platform) won't hit 100,000 or more apps? Developers will go (mostly) for the platform that is making them money. You think most of them care whether or not it's an open or closed platform? Really?
As far as the battery goes, that will depend on what's on the market after 2-3 years using my current phone. Currently iPhone battery life pretty much sucks, so I added a Mophie Juice Pack Air which extends it to 2-3 days if I'm not hitting it too hard. Google Voice? I have no use for it currently but do agree that Apple and ATT shouldn't have rejected it.
Oh and because I don't want you feel all frustrated and cause any harm to your obviously fragile pysche, I hearby acknowledge your little insult at the end. Keep trying though, you'll piss someone off eventually! - knobbysideup, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2I concur
-Pre Owner - EverGlow89, on 10/27/2009, -3/+5Seriously, you guys act as if this is ruining your day... So what if iPhone owners are getting more apps than they know what to do with. Why the hell are YOU complaining that THEY have "too many" apps. What on Earth is wrong with "too many" apps, anyway? I, myself, don't even have an iPhone, but the apps I buy for my iTouch (that they gave me free with my Mom's computer) either keep me entertained for hours, or, though limited with lack of phone coverage on an mp3 player, come in quite handy. Even if they do have so many useless apps, I've yet to see another phone even have the amount of useful or entertaining apps that Apple provides.
TL;DR - If you don't have/like Apple products, be quiet and enjoy what you have instead. Let people who do own Apple products enjoy them.
Can't we all just get along? -
