- goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40This is inaccurate. Title should read "The 9 ***** Widgets".
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13What's that brown stuff on your nose? :)
- ionbattle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7could I possibly understate how crappy this article. the answer is yes.. I could... very easily.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7who made that list. it sucks
out of that iStat Pro is good....the rest are novelty items that do nothing but eat ram
yes i saw that digg one, but if i want to see digg stories i come to digg so i can actually digg stories and read comments. RSS widgets are pointless imo. you use them for a day or 2 then its just more work to check the widget then go to the page....your browser is open all the time anyway, at least mine is - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Any title like that is going to be way too subjective. I like to stick to about 4 useful widgets that spare me having to fire up a full blown app. Calculator, calender, dictionary and the converter one, set to $ { } £.
- Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7They also forgot the versiontracker widget, which I can stand being without.
And the Tigergotchi? Give me a break..... - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wikipedia widget
ColorBurn (daily colour selection themes)
TubeTrack (keep track of tube and light railway times in london)
Say Cheese (comic widget)
iStat pro
+most of the included ones - davesuede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not a fan of dashboard/widgets, big resource hog.
Spotlight changed the way I work on my computer, dashboard......nehhh
Password generator & Latin generator I can use to make my day easier (im a web designer) , but not worth the lag on the system - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are lots of great widgets out there. I personally use:
Google Maps
Weather
Reverse Phone # lookup
Xbox Media Center Controler
Piano Chord finder
Guitar Chord/Scale finder
Family Guy quote of the day
Simpsons quote of the day
(Yes, I have a lot of RAM... that's the only drawback to dashboard. It's a hog) - drgnmstrnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow the widgets on this list SUCK. Not to mention that one of the widgets listed is for the website its on and one is to pander to us digg geeks (and its not even high on the list).
My current widgets that are on my dashboard include:
whois- Lets me find out the ownership info of any IP or website
SingPod- Gives me the lyrics to any song playing in ITunes
RADMovieTimes- Shows me the movies playing in my area sorted by theater or by movie
SMS2.0- Lets me send text messages from my computer to any phone with information from my address book (really usefull since it costs me to send text messages)
Level- From the international agency for computational carpentry, it uses the HD motion sensor to determine what is level
Quote.com- Lets me check the stocks
Accuweather.com- Enough said
Buzztracker- lets me see what percentage of the news is coming from where in the world. I don't have a TV so this is really usefull for finding out about new big events cause the circles in that area of the world will grow
PreekoutTremorSeeker- Shows me the latest earthquakes with info on location and power
Oblique Strategies- Gives me a random quote designed to break writers block (hasn't worked yet but the quotes can be funny)
Any games and stuff I don't keep up cause they take up too much processor speed when I am not using them and they take up too much space on my poor 12" monitor. - Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@kimos
Wireless widget = Air Traffic Control
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/networking_security/airtrafficcontrol.html - SWCarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Widgets have not ended up being that exciting have they? I would add App Update to the list. Maybe not exciting, but useful.
- tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Exactly.
- bugfaceuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No they haven't,most of the widgets I use are the ones apple supply + 1 (iStatNano... and that's only because I'm a geek).
Guess there's just not enough porn widgets. - Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Writing your own widgets is fairly easy and I've often considered creating one that would arbitrarily inject pointless fanboy comments into random digg articles. I'm thinking of calling it the "screamokid" widget.
But I see that somebody has already beaten me to it. - netwookiee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These widgets suck!
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't use ANY of those Widgets... I usually have two clocks, the translator, two stickies, and an iStat Nano.
- Nyfeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah... uhh... Who uses iPhoto mini regularly, if at all?
- happbando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i'll agree that for any widged that uses RSS, i'd rather just look at it in safari or firefox. however, there are some useful widgets with functionality you can't easily get through anything else:
iCal events - what apple's iCal widget should have been
DoBeDo - todo list
bezelTunes - an iTunes widget that doesn't slow down due to memory hogging
pearlyrics - iTunes lyrics - mabino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For the most part I use widgets that function as a lesser version of a parent application too.
iPhoto - iPhoto mini
iTunes - Symphonic
iCal (Calendar) - iCal Events
iCal (To Do) - DoBeDo
Calculator - Calculon
To check TiVo's recordings - NowPlaying
To check for new widget versions - Widget Update
To check for new app versions - App Update - wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Countdown
Weather
Dictionary
CPU Heat - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My selection is similar, with a Swedish-English translation widget as well. Plus Dashr, which shows daily "street art" from flickr. The rest I removed as I never used them.
Though often it's almost as quick to bring up the real calculator app (and others) using Quicksilver. - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That Unit Converter widget is brilliant, i must use it all the time for converting US dollars and Euros into British Pounds and vice versa.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same here. I also have a wireless network widget so I can see at a glance what is available in the area.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What metric was used to give these a best rating?
Whatever metric was used, it sucks, just like the widgets. - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I prefer the Nano version of the iStat widget to be honest but that list really sucked.
iTunes Artwork
http://sophiestication.de/?page_id=33
NoteIt is a good one, you can write small notes using it and have them sent to your mobile phone via Bluetooth, similarly DoBeDo is a pretty good one for managing your tasks using iCal.
Plus the usual Skype widget, Transmit widget (for Transmit users), Google Maps, Wikipedia, Capture (screenshots etc), UK Yellow Pages, Royal Mail postage calculator plus many of the ones Apple supply. - zezak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the article:
"So above is my list of widgets I use on a regular (or not so regular) basis. There are of course thousands more useful ones available and I don’t claim to say that these are the best."
They why does it say "The 9 Best Widgets" in the Apple Matters headline?
Anyway, this is missing a couple of real gems:
- iCal Events (http://www.benkazez.com/icalevents/)
- Storij (http://mitso.org/widget/)
- A variety of Apple widgets: Dictionary, Weather, Stickies, etc. - cuttlefish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Widgets that offer functionality that I don't get from, or don't need a full blown app for.... iPhoto Widget? I have iPhoto... why on earth would I want to scroll painfully through my photos as thumbnails?
Widgets I do use:
Apples Unit Converter, good for in the kitchen, Fahrenheit to Celsius, ounce to gram etc...
World Clock
And a GMail notifier on my desktop put there by putting Dashboard into developer mode. - viperman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess I don't have to write my response some one all ready did. ;-) Thumbs up man
as of writing this 690 people dugg, Come on people even searching apples web site I found better ones than this. Maybe are just finding what widgets are. - sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here is the Digg Search Widget for windows users:
http://www.skattertech.com/2006/04/digg-search-widget-170/ - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@DaffyDuck: Link to the wireless widget?
- starbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, this list is pretty useless. I have a few of the Apple supplied ones, like weather, but I like this one.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/music/amazonalbumart.html
Get's and updates missing album art. good for when I upgrade from my 3G iPod and get my new DVD player/recorder (a Mac mini) to serve as a media center.... - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Occasionally amusing content that stays permanently resident in memory and is 3D rendered, gobbling up huge amounts of resources? Sign me up!!!!
$widgets == st00pid
Firefox extensions are the way to go for almost all this stuff. They may be ugly but they get the job done and they're lean on resources. I'd rather use RSS over a digg widget any day. - Ashan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iStat Pro
Apple's weather widget
IceTV
2 x RSS Bean
Calculator
Calender
Flip Clock
Say Cheese
Unit Converter
Dictionary
PeerGuardian
pearLyrics
All arranged carefully to fit on my PowerBook G3. It will be great when I get my next mac hopefully a 20 inch Intel imac i could fit the shiira mini widget on it. http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/mini/en - Brutal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is just stupid. I would never use any of these widgets.
The only ones I've found useful are:
- Album Art (Makes finding and adding album artwork a blast!)
- AirTrafficControl
- the Apple Weather widget
- iStat Nano - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4the only good one on that list is digg
- zezak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's actually one of the only widgets on that list that I enjoy. Give it a try if you're an iPhoto user.
- jorvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like a lot of the things Apple is doing but the article bothered me (aside from the generally crappy widgets) when it said Apple has made widgets "the ‘in-thing’ in operating systems". The 5 or 6 people I know that have Macs don't use widgets that much. And they've been around in linux for much longer (gDesklets, for example).
I prefer a clean desktop:

: ) - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Am I the only Windows user whose illusion was destroyed after realize that this article is for "The 9 Best *Tiger* Widgets" ? I'm not against this article, it's really cool stuff, but the title is quite misleading.
- DrAtheist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Only 9? I'm used to top ten lists. We've been shortchanged! I want to talk to the manager!
- mijlee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What a crappy list!
Here are the ones I use when lucky enough to find myself on a machine running Tiger;
1. TheDailyGrind - records time on myltiple projects
2. Wikipedia - brilliant
3. iStat Pro - Everything you could want to know about your system
4. Snake - for when I get bored
5. WeatherBug Local Weather - best weather widget by far
6. Calculator 1984 - Retro calc
7. ColorBurn - for when I need look and feel inspiration!
8. Sol - See how much daylight you have left
9. Chromo Clock - See what colour of day it is
Anyway for what it's worth here there is my 9! - lancesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I personally like the widget for my Backpack account. Includes viewing and posting to my reminders, lists and notes. Get it here http://www.chipt.com/widget.html
- dannygutters, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This article seems to be implying apple invented the widget, tho MS implemented memory hogging usless desktop items with the Active Desktop in windows 98, Apple just popularized resource wasting.
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Oops... Wrong reply...
[Thumbs Down] - screamokid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3at least we dont get viruses and spyware and crap, and now we can run all (most) windows apps on our intel mac so suck it!
- cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@ screamokid
Did he say buy a windows computer or something? Dapper Drake is out...
Mactard/ - infra172, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Sell your mac and buy a real computer.
