- piratearggghhh, on 12/28/2008, -1/+36To me, it's not the phone that's the expensive part - going from $199 to $99 isn't going to seal the deal...it's the monthly plans with data is around $100/month that's keeping me from ditching the plain old cell phone.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -5/+39My bad - it didn't show up when I went to submit it - not sure why - otherwise I wouldn't have duped it.
- AgmLauncher, on 12/28/2008, -2/+21Why are people concerned with the price of the phone itself when it's the $2,000 contract that really rapes your wallet?
- RetepNamenots, on 12/28/2008, -0/+14$5 a month? o_O
- statrick, on 12/28/2008, -3/+16IT'S A TRAP!!!!!!
- rolf, on 12/28/2008, -1/+13Damn, I couldn't care less about a $99 iPhone. It's like those people who want 0 money down on a car without considering subsequent costs like payments, insurance, and gas.
I won't use the phone part too much, hence prepaid and not the mandatory $40 month calling plan. But I want a data plan (not the $30 assraping, fios is only $10 more). I will pay more money for a prepaid or unlocked iPhone Apple. Please don't lock me to AT&T. Please don't force me to pay more than $2000 over two years on the assumption that everyone that buys this phone wants this much service as a "minimum." Way too much committment. - meghalc, on 12/28/2008, -0/+9where at?
- JustAn0th3rFace, on 12/28/2008, -1/+8pics or shens
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+7What the *****?!
- frumpsnake, on 12/28/2008, -7/+13Amazing how raw a deal you guys get in the states -- I paid $0 upfront and $US4.75/month for the 16GB model on top my 2 year contract (so a total of just US$114 in handset repayments) -- and it's network unlocked too.
- Mujokan, on 12/28/2008, -0/+6Personally I don't care about dupes -- whoever can get it up should get it up. What I am slightly worried about is systematic patterns of unusual sources making it to the page thanks to power diggers -- and this doesn't count on that score. But: Daily Mail and Telegraph, I'm looking at you.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -0/+6No one likes a 2 year service contract.
- MacParrot, on 12/28/2008, -0/+5The $50 was for what? The service plan? Data plan? You aren't being very clear.
If the $50 was for anything besides paying for hardware, then no Steve Jobs and Apple have nothing to do with it. Except for when the phone first came out, Apple receives nothing from the carriers other than the price of the phone. - ninjaskimo, on 12/28/2008, -2/+7Sincerely,
Imma Scamyu - solidus636, on 12/28/2008, -4/+9You DO know that other smartphones have similar data costs, right? It's not just the iPhone.
- lothar250, on 12/28/2008, -3/+7That's impossible, attention whore.
- Jeffler, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4The dupe checker is a piece of *****, its no wonder it missed a 3 hour old article.
- AaronCo, on 12/28/2008, -3/+7Mine doesn't...
- kinseyincanada, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3i dont understand why people complain about the iPhone prices, im with Rogers and i paid about $200 for the phone, and my monthly bill is only $56 and i get 8GB of data enough which is enough for me and i have well over enough minutes and text messaging for me.
- craiginct, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3The prices of things fall over time.
By the end of 2009 Walmart will sell them for $99. - Timmmm, on 12/28/2008, -2/+5Without a contract the iPhone 3G 8 GB is actually about £342.50 ($500). You pay this price on a contract too, it's just hidden in the monthly bills. That's why they give you a cheaper contract after your 2 years are up (unless you get a new phone).
I can't believe how many people are fooled by this simple marketing ploy. - deadbaby, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Because presumably you are going to be paying a service fee for voice/data on other carriers too. You'd really have to sit down and figure out what another carrier is offering and see what the price difference was to get an idea how much of a premium you were paying. Ultimately as a consumer if I want a product I'll pay for it. $2k over 2 years isn't that much money. If the difference between Verizon is even $500 over 2 years I'm fine with that. I suspect it is more like $200-$300.
- Spoomeister, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2***** AT&T.
No iPhone, no way, no how, until I can buy an iPhone off the shelf and pick whatever carrier I want with no patching / warranty violations involved. - bjornski, on 12/28/2008, -1/+3But Steve said "used to be broken" is just as good as new!
- bogdan77, on 12/28/2008, -1/+3@ damirceadamircea:
What are you talking about?!?
Orange is the sole distributor in Romania, and the 8 GB model is available on a 24 month contract for 350 dollars (249 euros), not 175 dollars, plus a monthly payment of 39 euros, VAT excluded.
Nowhere in Romania did Orange advertised the iPhone pre-launch as "going to be available for 175 dollars". - JustAn0th3rFace, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2..so you expect the cellular service to be free?
- archer75, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2It still doesn't make the monthly fee any cheaper. And that's all that matters.
- srodolff, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2You know, buying an iPhone with AT&T is like buying a Macbook that runs only Windows Vista.
How many fanboys would there be then? - frumpsnake, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Did you miss the part where I said I wasn't in the US?
At launch, Optus in Australia charged AU$7/month for the iPhone 16GB (or AU$2/month for the 8GB) if you took the $59 phone plan for 2 years. Which has since gone up to the exorbitant price of...au$9/mo. More expensive plans were $0. - scootinger, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2But with other smartphones, you are not *FORCED* to buy a data plan as a condition of use as you are with the iPhone.
- runnin17, on 12/28/2008, -2/+4Yes, it is if you buy it from Apple. NOT if you buy it from AT&T. The refurb iPhones are being sold and warrantied through AT&T, not Apple. So that means you don't get anything at all when it comes to Apple service. I really cannot wait until Apple breaks away from AT&T.
- bogdan77, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Sorry for the double post...
- fandyboy, on 12/28/2008, -2/+3You lose at the internet.
- itcoll, on 12/28/2008, -1/+2for those of you voting me up iam gifting you an iphone !
- rolf, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1No it's not. It's a decent metric to go by for the simple reason that it's a competing service serving a different niche. It's like as if a landline phone call to a foreign country will cost $5, and the same one on a cell phone costs $25. Most people will wait until they get home but a few won't. The telephone companies can't price cell phone rates without any acknowledgement of the landline rates without getting their ass handed to them. Without that indirect landline competition, the cell phone would probably be even more expensive.
I would bet they would get a bunch more customers at $20 (or $19.99 for market droids) for monthly cellular internet than at $30. For myself, I can see spending $20 for almost anywhere internet, but I just don't see $30. Expensive call plans is why a lot of people to prepaid phones in the first place, esp. in this economy. - DanBoodro, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNEYEIKjLlo
fake btw. - deadbaby, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1It's irrelevant how much FIOS costs. $30/month for a 3G wireless data plan is the going rate on most carriers.
- se7en11, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1The ones complaining are not in Canada and have to use AT&T.
- earlvanze, on 12/28/2008, -1/+2Yeah seriously, their refurbished stuff is like brand new.
- seiya42, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1Why would you get a smartphone without a data plan? Seriously.
- kodek, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Show me a phone you can buy that you can use without service and I'll buy 10 of them.
- deadbaby, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1You may want to call AT&T. My monthly plan is not $100 month. I believe it's $69. Sounds like you're either adding more features or getting a raw deal.
- frogstik, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1I just added the iPhone data to my existing AT&T plan... it went up about 15 bucks a month.
- Sparky9292, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1That's why I pirate all my apps. I love Jaadu VNC but NFW am I paying $25 for that app when I'm shelling $85 a month for the iPhone thru AT&T.
http://beta.macnbits.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=841 ... - solidus636, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1Unlimited texting would make it 100 bucks a month.
- bogdan77, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1There's a big difference between 175 and 350 bucks, don't you think? It's not "almost the same thing".
Ok... about Orange's monthly payment of 43 euros: Apple and Steve Jobs has absolutely nothing to do with it, but they didn't fight for an even price of 199 $ in all countries, like in USA. That's what I don't like...
(As for me, I'm waiting for Vodafone to also offer the iPhone next year, maybe at a *slightly* reduced price of entry).
;^) - wtfkeyhole2pro, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1does anybody know the best way/place to get an iphone 3G without contract? (locked or unlocked)
- slyzxx, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1ebay but u`ll pay like 500-800 bucks
- migitalwarfare, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Some people are funny, and others just think they are. Guess which one you are.
- linagee, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1How is a $50 reduction in price that significant when the average cell bill is more than $50/mo?
