- johnny222, on 12/04/2007, -1/+21It's built into iTunes and iPods, and it's called "Sound Check." Just go to Preferences in iTunes, and you should find it. It's also in the iPod settings.
- miken32, on 12/04/2007, -0/+12iTunes doesn't make you convert anything to AAC, it works fine with MP3.
- Tippis, on 12/04/2007, -0/+9What? This topic hasn't been plastered with DRM-strippers yet? You're slacking off, Diggers! ;D
- ravan46, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7Wasn't there a utility to make all your songs the same volume? Anyone remember what that was?
- johnny222, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7There's a "reply" button for a reason.
- ndiderrich, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5dugg for the ability to upgrade firmware to get abilities of an ipod classic on a 5th gen. ipod.
- SwedishNinja, on 12/04/2007, -1/+6Am I the only one who wasn't too fond about the iPod Classic's new interface? I think it lags more than the old simple one.
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5You aren't sorry.
- vibez, on 12/04/2007, -2/+6mp3gain?
- jericko, on 12/04/2007, -1/+4What about Anapod? I am getting a IPOD for x-mas and from all the research and suggestions, I am going to use anapod as a Itunes replacement.
- Grummond, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Is there a tool to make my 2 year old iPod's battery functional again?
Amazing how the battery died just after it's 2 year warranty expired. - stalefries, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3You're converting from one lossy format to another lossy format. You certainly won't gain sound quality, that's for sure. Of course, if you only listen to heavy metal and the like, sound quality isn't much to worry about. :)
Conclusion: don't do it if you don't have to. If you do have to, make sure the original file is the highest quality it can be. - 1CHAMONIX, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I did not know there were so many of these probrams for ipods. I actually used one just now to put all my songs back on to my computer. plus the update to make it look like the new one is awesome.
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Is flac the better alternative?
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Shame iSproggler is only available for use with iTunes. :(
Winamp comes with a fantastic iPod pluggin as standard, and can also handle things like music recovery, album art, video, last.fm (when playing music off the iPod at the computer).
I'm not confident enough to hack the firmware on my 5G iPod... - stalefries, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Um, why not select each file individually, hit Cmd+I, select the artwork tab, and then delete what is already there? Then, you highlight the entire album, and drag-n-drop the album image to the "Selected Items" box in the bottom left.
- OwdenBowden, on 12/04/2007, -2/+4I think it is about time that someone create a program for your portable apps that will upload into the chips memory and allow you to turn on and off the product while displaying the fact that it is stolen and if you give it back your karma will improve. As well as Maxing out the volume so that it plays a loop of _"THIS IS STOLE MATERIAL PLEASE CONTACT THE POLICE" or my favorite and should get the best attention - "I HAVE A BOMB AND WILL BLOW YOU ALL TO ALLAH - YOU WESTERN DEVILS".
- stalefries, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2EQ: (random guess) I think if you save a preset in iTunes' equalizer window, it should copy over.
ogg and FLAC: Um, iTunes refuses to import these (as you probably already know). I did manage to import FLAC files and convert to ALAC (no quality loss at all) with these directions: http://tinyurl.com/29g5nf
Gah, took me a long time to track down that blog post. - noots, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1no sharepod? i use that app constantly for my ipod.
- miken32, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2I've got an 8GB Nano and space is tight. About half my files had the album art stored in the file, and I wanted instead to use Apple's album art database to reduce file size. Unfortunately only music sold in the iTunes store will work, so I needed a way I could edit the database to include my own album art for other artists like Radiohead, etc. who aren't in the iTunes store.
I found tons of complaints from people about how the album art database wouldn't work with other music players and how this a travesty, but only one person had done what I needed.
This guy made a web application in Python that you run locally on your PC; it intercepts calls to Apple's album art server and gives you the opportunity to send your own images back. Very cool (although directly editing the database would be cooler) and just what I needed.
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20061 ... - stalefries, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Have you installed the updates? I've had my 3rd Gen nano since about a week after they got announced, and the recent updates (they released 1.0.3 the other day) have really improved a lot.
- noots, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1also does anyone have any experience with Rockbox? are there any underlying flaws that prevent most people from switching?
- Authustian, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Thank you for this posting, as a WinXP Pro x64 user who received an ipod nano as a gift, i was disheartened to discover that 64-bit windows isn't supported by apple. Funny thing though, right after i installed itunes, and imported some music, it let me transfer the whole play list over. But only that first time.
Now i can use my new toy in ways apple never intended... take that steve jobs! :) - nunofgs, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I have yet to see a small PHP app that I can install on my ubuntu server and would let me convert my videos through a web interface. Preferably, an iPhone web app interface.
- skyshock1, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Anything that lets me play my ogg or FLAC files besides iPod Linux? Gapless playback? Anything that gives me a proper parametric EQ rather than those ***** EQ presets Apple sticks on there?
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2To those who changed iPod so it can play Oggs. Anyone convert MP3s to Ogg? How were the results?
- staxofmax, on 12/04/2007, -5/+6iTunes for Windows is the number one reason why I no longer have an iPod. I can't think of a single software program I hate more than iTunes. Maybe QuickTime.
- BigGourgues, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1The Wikipedia one seems real cool. there's been so many time me and my friends have argued over the dumbest little fact. Or in class i'll have to try and argue with partner that i'm right. This would change everything.
- thundros, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Actually, I've had a few iPods (4G, 1G shuffle and 1G nano) and I've activated them with new codes, on different machines, without issue and without the need to fork over another $30 (of course I haven't "upgraded" to the 5G and higher, which do required the "new" universal anapod and the $ that goes with it).
I do agree support is sketchy at times, but I have noticed that they then to fix issues reported to them in future versions of the software. I mainly use Anapod now to access my iPod at work and to stream music over the network without resorting to iTunes (since my iPod is setup to sync only at home). - johnny222, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1And then they changed it, because it was flawed.
- tuh2, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1With Floola u can copy files to ur ipod and take them off your ipod.
- stalefries, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Not really. All you're going to do is convert a lossy format to a lossless format. Essentially, more hard disk use, same sound quality.

- AppleGeek, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I liked the stuff that they said, but I think that I have probably tried most of that stuff at one point. When it comes to putting linux on your ipod and stuff, it's cool, but for the most part I found it impractical and of little value.
- jydesign, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Senuti is great
- worxman02, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2I dont like the split interface as the screen is already small and I care more about being able to read the text, rather than seeing the album art. Though cover flow on an iPod is a cool function. If I could update my iPod so it just adds cover flow, I would be a happy man
- anarchyx34, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I wonder if I can use "Floola" to copy music to my Ipod or Iphone from my work PC (windows), listen to the music on my way home, and then transfer it onto my Mac into my Itunes library. That would be schweet.
- skyshock1, on 12/04/2007, -2/+2Dugg for excellent use of engrish.
- darthleppard, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1Must be someone who works with Redchair digging me down. You're doing people a disservice by doing so and acting like Anapod is a worthwhile use of your money!
- geekworking, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0If you have 5.5 gen or older, Rockbox fits the bill.
- darlyn, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1CLASSIC
... - awhiteflame, on 12/04/2007, -2/+2Back in the old days, there was only one reply button! And people just said the person's name before their comment! And it worked great! *getoffmylawn*
- sumanbhatta, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1I found sound check fail on me on many occasion, volume too loud etc. I wish there was a decent implementation of Replaygain.
- darthleppard, on 12/04/2007, -2/+2Go with Anapod as long as you are POSITIVE that you will never need support of any type! They will never answer your emails. You will need support, adding an Ipod after initial purchase requires it for a new activation code. I bought an ipod for my wife just recently and it was a month before they ever replied to my many email requests for activation of the second ipod.. By that time I had went to another program. $30 wasted....
- ravimohanv, on 12/09/2007, -0/+0important information for i pod users
- lolo2007, on 03/05/2008, -0/+0I liked the stuff that they said, but I think that I have probably tried most of that stuff at one point. When it comes to putting linux on your ipod and stuff, it's cool, but for the most part I found it impractical and of little value.

- acu8509, on 12/04/2007, -3/+2Is there one to bring my stolen nano back?
I can see it now, the thief is plugging it into his computer, and OH GOD NO, DON'T DO IT! DON'T PUT 'HOLLA BACK GIRL' ON MY iPOD!
Now i can never take it back.... -
