The 10 Best iPhone Applications
iphone-app.blogspot.com — With the recent surge in iPhone applications popping up everywhere, it might seem nearly impossible to decide which ones to try out. I have lined up the top 10 applications your iPhone won't be complete without. The following selection is based on parameters such as usability, price, utilization of system resources, stability and update speed.
- 1782 diggs
- digg it
- flipmeat, on 03/02/2008, -2/+68Screenshots would have been nice. Links to videos, not so much.
- linkin2, on 03/02/2008, -24/+4The 10 Best iPhone Applications = oxymoron
- DaffyDuck, on 03/02/2008, -2/+11FAIL
- coldfusion1970, on 03/02/2008, -7/+3I guess its not so easy to save screenshots from a iPhone.
- virtualball, on 03/02/2008, -0/+11Actually, one just needs to download Screenshot.app ;)
- linkin2, on 03/02/2008, -24/+4The 10 Best iPhone Applications = oxymoron
- badjoke, on 03/02/2008, -2/+30iSolitaire takes up more of my time than schooling.
- Mootabolife, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Peggle for ipod!
- CharlesSaint, on 03/02/2008, -4/+41No Vnsea? This list = FAIL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFwnRsJaYvA&feature ...
- ataylor32, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4Wow, that's awesome! VNC gives the iPhone a lot more functionality. Indirect functionality, but functionality nonetheless.
- mrBitch, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5VNC client on the iPhone / Touch is a cute party trick.
"Touchpad" also uses VNC code base, but is leagues ahead (in terms of functionality) :

(quick overview of Touchpad: "It converts your iPhone touch screen into a portable laptop touch pad")
- mrBitch, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5VNC client on the iPhone / Touch is a cute party trick.
- Philbert, on 03/02/2008, -1/+2Very nice, I'm surprised I haven't seen and tried that already.
- ataylor32, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4Wow, that's awesome! VNC gives the iPhone a lot more functionality. Indirect functionality, but functionality nonetheless.
- Spamcan, on 03/02/2008, -3/+29Customize is great (though I still can't seem to get it to work 100% in 1.1.3) but where the hell was Summerboard? A top 10 list of iPhone apps without Summerboard is not only rare but also completely inaccurate.
- mrinternet, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1ditto here, with customize, if summerboard is not in your list of all apps in installer add null river to your list of 'sources' or safari over to it. Oh it is also called SMB sometimes
- PunkRampant, on 03/02/2008, -8/+3Can anyone point me to a tutorial on how to install themes?
Summerboard gives me some themes to choose from, but I don't know how to add my own.- Omgitzurdad, on 03/02/2008, -2/+7google is ur friend diggers are not
- MellerTime, on 03/02/2008, -2/+2Truer words were never spoken...
- badjoke, on 03/02/2008, -1/+1Besides "ur" not being a word. Unless you're talking about the ancient Mesopotamian city, that is.

- MellerTime, on 03/02/2008, -2/+2Truer words were never spoken...
- mrinternet, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1You could go to the website for summerboard http://www.apptapp.com/summerboard/ (smart ass comment)
If that is too hard or you cannot be asked, (as in my case) visit my top 50 summerboard themes story. http://digg.com/apple/The_top_50_Themes_for_the_iP ...

- neiltc13, on 03/02/2008, -5/+23Note to writer:
< b > is really helpful!- Tippis, on 03/02/2008, -1/+20Nah. <strong> is better.
- Zipp425, on 03/02/2008, -9/+3Why? more markup same results.
- blazes816, on 03/02/2008, -0/+8 is deprecated.
- blazes816, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5I fail at typing. It's*.
- Tippis, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4More markup – more results.
<b> has no meaning – it's just a CSS shortcut.
<strong> *has* meaning (strong emphasis) *and* works as a CSS shortcut.
- blazes816, on 03/02/2008, -0/+8 is deprecated.
- Zipp425, on 03/02/2008, -9/+3Why? more markup same results.
- streak, on 03/02/2008, -1/+43<harder><better><faster><stronger> is best.
- badjoke, on 03/02/2008, -0/+9Don't just leave those tags open!
</stronger></faster></better></harder>
Now we've got a website going!- pixelperfect, on 03/02/2008, -0/+8No... you have XML.
- streak, on 03/02/2008, -0/+9No, our work is never over.
- bigsteve, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3Fantastic recovery.

- Tippis, on 03/02/2008, -1/+20Nah. <strong> is better.
- tejesh2086, on 03/02/2008, -29/+0pls dig mine also i digg urs thanks
- borez, on 03/02/2008, -0/+9Yes...indeedy
- Nath4n, on 03/02/2008, -4/+42lame
- BrendanSheehan, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3I don't know about lame, but I would have included Pool and iBlackjack myself.
- jjpertusch, on 03/02/2008, -3/+61it is my guess that most people who dugg this didn't read the lame article first
- badqat, on 03/02/2008, -2/+8Agreed. Simply saw the "iPhone" in the title and dugg...without seeing how crap it was.
- kenvsryu, on 03/02/2008, -0/+10Welcome to digg, we hope you enjoy your stay.
- digginamish, on 03/02/2008, -1/+2You must be joking!
That article includes the words "Apple" and "iPhone" multiple times. On top of that it says "top ten" in the title. Doesn't that make it an automatic digg for everyone?!?
- filmasia, on 03/02/2008, -6/+0technology can only get better in many years to come...
- kevinwiz, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4What a useless, generic comment.
- mrinternet, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1and old things die, welcome to .. mr obvious goes to digg :-)
- motheroats, on 03/02/2008, -14/+8worst list ever! tell me, how many of you actually use converter or dictionary!
here is the right list:
1.installer
2.nes
3.snes
4.tap tap revolution
5.iphone apps for ipod touch
6.mobile finder
7.pool(its a new game, totally cool)
8. iphysics
9.mobilescrobbler
10.apollo
you cant fit the many of the best apps on a top 10 list, top 20 or 25 would be better.- IcyStorm, on 03/02/2008, -0/+7I use Converter and the Dictionary app quite often. Why is Pool on there? And if it's the best IPHONE apps, why the hell are included stuff (number 5) in there?
- Philbert, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1I just downloaded Pool while reading, pretty cool. Tap Tap Revolution hurts my wrist.
- fudsak, on 03/02/2008, -9/+5I'm not entirely up on the iPhone information, but last I checked, installing 3rd party apps requires having an unlocked iPhone right?
- luddep, on 03/02/2008, -1/+7Nope, it only has to be Jailbroken. Unlocking, Activating and Jailbreaking are all very different.
- badqat, on 03/02/2008, -0/+11Unlocked, no. Jailbroken, yes.
- Konformitee, on 03/02/2008, -17/+1Be aware that doing this voids your iPhone warranty and is an ILLEGAL violation of the DMCA laws of the United States. The people installing these applications are thieves and criminals who are using illegal iPhones cracked to use software which they are not entitled to be using. Just wait until next week when the AWESOME iPhone SDK comes out and we can get some real quality Apple-approved applications finally instead of this cheap parade of virus-laden garbage.
- badqat, on 03/02/2008, -1/+3troll much?
- naonao, on 03/02/2008, -0/+6Uh oh, who let The Man in here?
- rayray14, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3And do you have examples of virus-laden garbage to support your claim?
- JaggedToaster, on 03/02/2008, -5/+7"The following selection is based on parameters such as usability, price, utilization of system resources, stability and update speed."
Yes, I'm sure price really helped make his decision. You know, considering they are free.- nmaster64, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1#9 isn't...
- MaverickC17, on 03/02/2008, -11/+2That list sucked. Here is mine:
1. Installer
2. Customize
3. Snes4iPhone
4. gpSPhone
5. NES
6. iAno
7. RSS
8. Locations
9. DressUp
10. iPhysics- badqat, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4iAno is out of date, and has been replaced.
DressUp? LOL! I think you forgot your 'hello kitty' theme!
- badqat, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4iAno is out of date, and has been replaced.
- Weejay, on 03/02/2008, -13/+2iPhone, LOL.
- aqzman, on 03/02/2008, -8/+2Yay! Another top 10 list that everyone is going to bitch about because app xx isn't on the list!
- badqat, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Or perhaps just because it sucks...
- captaindigger, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3NetStumbler is another good one that isn't there. Very useful app for the ipod touch/iphone.
- Proctor, on 03/02/2008, -1/+7I would say iRadio and gpSPhone would have to be somewhere on the top. I have not used any of the other emulators, so I cant comment on those. Navizon is by far one of the worst programs on the iPhone. Nobody gives a ***** where the nearest god damn cell phone tower is unless you want to climb it and fall to your death. It certainly does not find where you're located, or anywhere near you. It's at least a mile away each time.
- Konformitee, on 03/02/2008, -1/+1The Google Maps locator feature works fine for me. It finds my location within about 50 meters which is amazing considering this device doesn't have a GPS in it.
- Proctor, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Eh well I haven't updated to 1.1.3 yet, so I have no idea.
- betobeto, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1At first I was enthusiast about having GBA/NES emulation on the iPhone. Once I learned how both suck up battery life like there's no tomorrow, not so much. Pity.
- Konformitee, on 03/02/2008, -1/+1The Google Maps locator feature works fine for me. It finds my location within about 50 meters which is amazing considering this device doesn't have a GPS in it.
- OneManArmy, on 03/02/2008, -0/+19I can't believe he didn't mention MobileScrobbler. It is handsdown one of the best looking iPhone apps out there, and it works.
- DaffyDuck, on 03/02/2008, -5/+1And it drains your battery like nobodies business.
- truelier, on 03/02/2008, -3/+3Most ridiculous top 10 if you ask me...
With Google Locate Me feature being there why the heck have Navizon... and seriously Coverter?!?!
Whatever happened to Summerboard
The most useful app I find for iPhone by far though many people I am sure would not have used it much has to be iMoneyTrackin
This app lets me keep track of the money I am spending.. before this I used to have no clue how at the end of the day I am only left with $10 in my account..
Apollo maybe top 10 for most people but def wouldnt be in my list... The client doesnt keep you connected to your sessions as soon as you start using other apps. I cant get to see how this is any different than using meebo on safari...- bigsteve, on 03/02/2008, -1/+1You pointed out that an Apple feature depreciated Navizon, but missed the point that the new pages feature in Springboard took away the main point for installing Summerboard.
- dawglse, on 03/03/2008, -1/+1Summerboard is more than just new pages... Have you heard of the ***** themes?
- bigsteve, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1I've used a few themes, but not the ***** theme.
I was speaking to it's main and original purpose, which I interpret as getting more apps accessible. Theming felt like a secondary purpose.- dawglse, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Well, then now the theming is the main point for installing summerboard. Apple has yet to provide ways to theme our iPods & iPhones.
Besides, I would have the extra pages without installing summerboard. In the later jailbreaks (from the first 1.1.1. I believe)... the jailbreak automatically included new pages support.

- PabloMac, on 03/02/2008, -0/+11The best part of this story was near the bottom:
"This post has been removed by a blog administrator."- GentlemanFox, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5ya, i guess they did not like negative responses. We the ppl here at Digg will fix that.
- GentlemanFox, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1this is is totally lame. yes they put in a few cool apps. but come on.. how about drummer and pianist buy moocowmusic, or Pocketguitar or vnsea. Well I am sure the writer of that blog will delete my comment. They can't delete it here.
- autoankauf, on 03/02/2008, -2/+0that is very helpfull ! Thank you
- browny1978, on 03/02/2008, -0/+6this is a very lame 10 top
- PPP777, on 03/02/2008, -4/+2here's my contribution:
1- Installer
2- Customize
3- weDict
4- Converter
5- Touchpad
6- Locations (world webcams)
7- Pool
8- iZoo
9- iPhysics
10- Crosswalk (NYC)- likwidfuzion, on 03/02/2008, -1/+21, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 are all on the list already...
- danjnk, on 03/02/2008, -1/+2Do all iphone apps work on the ipod touch? I'm gonna get one of the two but i'm not sure whether the apps that're on this list and all the other ones out there (EvolutionRBG etc) will work, as the emphasis in such articles is always on the iphone :S
- fani, on 03/02/2008, -12/+4I prefer the plain old iphone. Hacking it provided features that were, yes, on paper "cool", but after a few days, realized I didn't need or care about it. The iPhone is primarily a phone. Its supplemental default Apple provided features are more than plenty for my need ( Mail, Safari, iPod, Weather, Maps, SMS ) are pretty much all I need.
This argument is similar to PSP - its first and foremost for gaming. Same for iPhone - its a freaking phone.
These hacks are good and all but its novelty wore off after about 2 days just like the Wii.- Torv, on 03/02/2008, -2/+1You can also say that you don't like the quality (or the feel) of the current application stack, and that you would rather wait until the SDK is settled. Who wants to play hackers?
- ectocooler, on 03/02/2008, -4/+1Agreed
- adinu79, on 03/02/2008, -1/+2I actually wouldn't have bought one if it weren't for the current application stack. Saying you don't like it because it has so many apps is plain stupid. If you don't want a lot of functionality on a phone, it means that you didn't actually need an iPhone and you bought one just to show off.
BTW. where is Terminal.app? That's one of the most useful apps out there.
- datdamonfoo, on 03/02/2008, -6/+1Do any of these turn it into a good phone? Didn't think so...
- Thanehand, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4It's already an awesome phone.
- ronaldpoi, on 03/02/2008, -0/+6So the first top app is app installer. Really? Isn't that required for the other 9?
Lame- MaverickC17, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Not if you install them manually...Installer might be on the iPhone/Touch, but you can install them manually if you want
- birkoph, on 03/02/2008, -3/+19Was that article written by a 12 year old?

You FAIL at English.- Kalakov, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5The dude is from Norway, give hm a break...
- Cine, on 03/02/2008, -1/+2***** you, I'm from Norway, but I can write better articles and that.
The basic rule of not beginning every paragraph with the same sentence goes in every language. Having english as your second language is no excuse, and I'm sick of it being used as one.
- Cine, on 03/02/2008, -1/+2***** you, I'm from Norway, but I can write better articles and that.
- Nyctobello, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1One day, a grammar Nazi partied is going to be formed out of all these proper English speaking diggers.
- Kalakov, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5The dude is from Norway, give hm a break...
- cocokr1sp, on 03/02/2008, -0/+6This article is terrible...
- WarezAppz, on 03/02/2008, -1/+11WTF is 'FAIL' the new Digg Buzzword or what?!!
- chuckpoole, on 03/02/2008, -2/+1You obviously aren't part of the 12-25 age demographic. You have to keep up with the lingo my man...
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fai ... - joel8x, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Combined with the word Epic, you can figure out who the douches are!
- chuckpoole, on 03/02/2008, -2/+1You obviously aren't part of the 12-25 age demographic. You have to keep up with the lingo my man...
- juniorlikespie, on 03/02/2008, -5/+1nice. but where's my list for symbian and windows mobile?
- AceyS, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1We don't like that. >.< Now getouttamyface.
- rankftw, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1I stopped reading at the word price.
- likwidfuzion, on 03/02/2008, -1/+3Here are some apps that I use often that's not from the list:
Insomnia.app
Mahjong.app
Labyrinth.app
Pianist.app
Pool.app
SuperPong.app
VNsea.app
iBlackjack.app
iSolitaire.app
iZoo.app
snes4iphone.app - israelanderson, on 03/02/2008, -6/+1http://GodsiPhone.com should have been included.
- spargett, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2No thanks.
- subduck, on 03/02/2008, -4/+0Seriously one of the most amazing sites that nobody knows about is iPhone Lyrics. It's not really an app, but you guys should really check it out:
http://www.iphonelyrics.com - cli006, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1I could have made a much better top 10 list, but these are the reasons that the iPhone is so great. I used to think the iPhone was overpriced but when I bought one to resell, I immediately decided to keep it. I decided to sell my Blackjack 2 instead.
- likwidfuzion, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1You bought an iPhone to resell when it is readily available...right...
- nehalp100, on 03/02/2008, -7/+2iPhone Google Earth BETA (unreleased, private) didn't make the top 10. Only sneak peak is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU

- Gregsaw, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1I haven't had a good rick rolling in a while. thank you, sir
- zzz@tkz, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3Awesome, getting my iPhone in 2 days (hurry up FedEx!), and this will surely help, dugg.
(can't wait :|) - joshzam, on 03/02/2008, -2/+1Someone wake me when VLC (or any other DivX player) is available for the iPhone.
- bigsteve, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3It already has h.264 encoder hardware on board. As a DivX decoder already exists for the ARM platform, porting it to the iPhone might be trivial. But encoding on your computer first into the iPhone's native format will save you space on the device and quite a bit of battery life.
I could see people saying "but but I have 100 GB of DivX! It'd take forever!" then only encode what you want to put on your device. The iPhone/iPod Touch only come in 8, 16, and 32GB.- joshzam, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2but but I have 100 GB of Divx! And I'm not jumping through unnecessary hoops for this or any other platform. Give me a player that plays what I already have. Why is that too much to ask?
- naonao, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3Get another player then. Would you really watch 100GB of stuff on the iPhone's screen?
- joshzam, on 03/03/2008, -1/+2You're absolutely right, another player is just what the doctor ordered. Until Apple pulls their finger out and lets their customers experience a little thing called freedom.
I currently use my Palm TX to watch vids on the train on my way to and from work everyday. The Daily Show, films, sitcoms... I would love to trade it in for an iPhone (they're gorgeous!) but this one sticking point really is a deal breaker for me.
- joshzam, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2but but I have 100 GB of Divx! And I'm not jumping through unnecessary hoops for this or any other platform. Give me a player that plays what I already have. Why is that too much to ask?

- thetin, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1noter ... MindDojo! Both of these are essential!
(http://dbelement.com) - nytel, on 03/02/2008, -1/+1I dont have an iphone and I agree with most people. This list isn't that fancy.
- bumblefoot, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1cydia is a better installer type app, its based off of debians APT system, not many apps availible on it yet as its not been out longer than a week at tops, but they're working on porting the some of the larger repos over to work with it
- dalesmatrix, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1I've downloaded ziphone, but am I correct that that doesn't install installer.app? If not, how does one go about installing it (including where to download it) I'm wanting to install it on a touch. Thanks for any help!
- Gregsaw, on 03/03/2008, -0/+2it puts everything you need on your phone (or touch... whatever)
i used it to jailbreak mine, and it worked beautifully.
and just google ziphone to find it

- Gregsaw, on 03/03/2008, -0/+2it puts everything you need on your phone (or touch... whatever)
- batmant, on 03/02/2008, -3/+3Best iPhone Apps? I'll go with Phone, Mail, SMS, iPod, Safari, Calendar, Photos, Maps, Weather, Clock.
- Michypoo, on 03/03/2008, -1/+1Buried for calling the game "iPhysics". Nowadays, anyone can just stick the letting "i" in front of a word to coin it as an Apple-related product. "Crayon Physics" is a game that should never have the letter "i" in front of it, ever. Doing so is blasphemy and tarnishes its name.
- digitallysick, on 03/03/2008, -1/+1Fail, my favs are Netstumbler, Make it mine, summberboard , iradio, and MobileScrobbler
- zakbroman, on 03/03/2008, -0/+0i need an app that allows me to hold the phone horizontally while i text. does that make me gay?
- Wilzer, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1No it dosent. Its the "being gay" that makes you gay.
- Wilzer, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1No it dosent. Its the "being gay" that makes you gay.
- Delber, on 03/03/2008, -0/+2Do people actually read articles before they dig?
