- jman583, on 07/06/2009, -7/+44Well no *****, that a phone that has been out for only one month has less apps then a phone that is nearly two years old.
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -6/+35Johan Marcus Guy here, adding this comment real quickly to prove that the internet DOES work on the pre..
One second, the flight attendant has informed me that we're losing cabin pressure and that, in fact, three motors have been displaced due to an EMP pulse that has been triangulated to my seat.
Strang - iansh, on 07/06/2009, -1/+27You had a pretty good comment going there. But something at the end doesn't seem quite righ
- LumpOfCole, on 07/06/2009, -2/+20As an iPhone user, I want the competition to the device to be as good as possible. The Apple device being too high on a pedestal leads to ***** like "no competing browsers" allowed on the App Store. The better the competition, the more market incentive for Apple to pawn their hubris for a slice or two of humble pie, and maybe in the end I can finally use an iPhone version of Opera instead of Safari.
- MeLikeyTacos, on 07/06/2009, -1/+16Strang indeed!
- kreatre2007, on 07/06/2009, -6/+21Great analysis. I think you have spelled out very well why the iPhone meets your needs, and why the Pre (for now) does not. It's interesting that the morons who commented on you before me don't understand any of what you said. They simply wanted to be *****.
- mrpunman, on 07/06/2009, -3/+17Not that I'm a Mac fanboy, but your comment made my eyes bleed.
- mrpunman, on 07/06/2009, -1/+14No, I am not
I buried you because the improper use of vocabulary and immature sentence structure that won't convince anyone with your argument. - Pyroteq, on 07/06/2009, -6/+17This article is stupid.
"As great as cloud messaging is, its entertainment value is limited, and even if you're a complete messaging addict you still can't do it in-flight." - No ***** *****, flight attendants ask you to switch off all mobile phones during flight, so how is an iPhone any different?
"You also have to be careful how much you message on the ground, since doing intensive e-mail and IM seriously drains the battery." - Again, this is the same with all phones during heavy usage.
As for gaming, pfft. If you want to game bring a Nintendo DS with you or something. I haven't seen any iPhone games that could keep me entertained for more than 5 minutes.
This is coming from someone who uses an iPhone 2G. - Lightstab, on 07/06/2009, -0/+11Oh, really, then why did Roger McNamee, a prominent executive at PALM say, "June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later. Think about it -- if you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they're going to buy."
And why did he say, "The Pre going to be a million times -- well, not a million times -- several times faster than the iPhone."
I've noticed that when people like a product that doesn't do as well as they want in the market, they always say, "Hey, it's not TRYING to beat such and such a device. I notice Zune users use that argument. They say that the Zune doesn't compete with the iPod Touch. Look, if the device is in the same market as another device, they're competing.
The fact that they are not exactly the same doesn't mean they don't compete, it means that they are different, which is what you use to compete. - gllopc, on 07/06/2009, -0/+10I don't think that's true. It's a direct competitor, in that it plays music, surfs the web, receives email, has video, YouTube, apps, etc. Plus, it was developed by John Rubenstein, who left Apple as the head of the iPod division for Palm.
Palm's ads also seem to show that they believe that they are direct competition to the iPhone. - joshrice, on 07/06/2009, -1/+10I took it as he crashed right before he could type the last letter...or should I say lette
- S4MF1SHER, on 07/06/2009, -1/+9First, I don't own either phone (sorry), but i will most likely buy the Pre next month as I'm already a Sprint customer.
Sprint's Everything Plans are more economical;
$69.99/month - 450 Talk time, unlimited web, pics, and text; $99.99/month for Everything Unlimited, that includes voice, data, pics, and text.
AT&T plans are a little bit more in price:
For an equivalent voice plan as Sprint's $69.99/month Everything plan, here's what it looks like on AT&T:
Nation 450 w/Rollover® Minutes $39.99/month
Data Plan $30.00/month
Text Messaging Unlimited $20.00/month
Total: $89.99/month
If you wanted Unlimited voice for AT&T it would cost you $99.99 and I'm not sure if picture messaging (MMS) is available yet. From what I've read, it seems that it will be when Apple says you need it.
I guess it boils down to how much you can afford and which network is better in your area. There are rumors that the Pre will be going to Verizon in the future, so that may be a possiblity for you. I know this isn't about the phones, but I think it's worth mentioning. I hope this helps. - coit, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8@seraph, real keyboard may not be an issue for you, but I prefer to have one myself.
- esc27, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8Wrong. The original iPhone as launched didn't have apps until many months later. People had to hack it to get third party software to work.
- TheNik, on 07/06/2009, -0/+7How, exactly, is the Pre a flop? Because it hasn't had 2.5 years to build a giant software library full of gems like "iFart" and "iBeerPong"?
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -1/+8Oh shi
- aussieNickuss, on 07/06/2009, -0/+7One feature that this guy says the Pre should have, is also sorely lacking on the iPhone...... a "phone only" mode! There's been a few occasions where I've been down to 15-20% battery, but I know I'm at least a day away from a charger (ie, out camping). I would have loved a simple switch that turns off 3G, wi-fi, bluetooth, data retrieval and turns down the brightness, instead of having to trawl through and turn off each option individually. Even better would be a 2G only mode which also underclocks the CPU for those times when you need the juice you have left to last as long as possible.
- schroeder, on 07/06/2009, -1/+8While I agree with some of what you say, I do not agree on how you say it. Therefore, I also digg you down.
- mrhahn, on 07/06/2009, -1/+8Flight Control. Hours and hours of Flight Control.
- schroeder, on 07/06/2009, -3/+9I think that since this is the first generation modern smartphone from a failing company, it is going to skimp where it can to save cost and see if it can find viability in an evolving market. I would like to thing that with enough traction, the second generation would be more on par with the likes of the iPhone.
- zimsters, on 07/06/2009, -5/+11Why do people keep comparing iphone and pre. they're different market segments. the pre falls between blackberry and the iphone, it's not TRYING to dethrone the iphone.
- deslock, on 07/06/2009, -0/+6So your #1 reason is storage space? So I assume you are seriously considering trading your iphone in for an Android one (removable SDHC card)?
Just pulling your leg man ;) I'm an Android owner so I couldn't resist. - krets, on 07/06/2009, -0/+6Damn, you mean I only have two fart apps to choose from instead of 50?
- xGORDOx, on 07/06/2009, -3/+9how many apps did the iPhone have after three weeks?
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -1/+7*whoosh!*
- Surfrock66, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6Do articles like this piss any other Americans off? I don't want to compare the iPhone to the Pre. With the structure the FCC allows cell companies to maintain in the US, it's not as simple as "which phone do I like best." I'm locked into a stupid contract, and it's sprint of nothing, and I'm very happy to get the pre. If I could put all phones in front of me and choose which one I want, then articles like this may be of some use, but for now, you're better off comparing the Sanyo 2700, the BBerry Tour, and the Pre.
Not trying to complain about about the article, just expressing my frustration with the fact that my wife signed us up for a new contract and now deciding between an iPhone, Storm, Pre or G1 is a null point...in America. - fragmit, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6These are all mods to Safari Webkit, not really a different browser at all...
- Trax91, on 07/06/2009, -1/+6Guys I think I spotted a snipe-
- macplenty, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4Andy Ihnatko while on Twit's MacBreak Weekly had some pretty good advice. He said if you are in the market for a new phone, go to the Apple store or at&t or wherever you can get your hands on a 3G s and use the thing. Play with all the features, hold it, type on it, browse on it, etc. Then say to yourself "Everything about this is great or usable except..." and you will have your answer.
If the except is a physical keyboard then you should go with that type of phone. If the except is the camera has no flash, or the browser doesn't have Flash then a different phone is obviously what you should be looking at etc., etc.
Good advice
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -1/+5Summary: I got stuck at the airport for a few hours with only a banana, but man, do I wish I had an orange.
- Elranzer, on 07/06/2009, -1/+5The Pre has a better looking interface than the iPhone, at the very least.
I was surprised someone was able to out-do Apple in the interface looks department. Especially Palm. - Elranzer, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4Don't switch carriers just for phone hardware. That's very stupid.
It's tough for Verizon customers because we got probably the least cool phones to pick from, but the service is just the best out of all the US carriers. Eventually, it's going to get the Pre and/or iPhone, perhaps in early 2010.
It's not worth downgrading to AT&T or Sprint just for a cool phone. - coit, on 07/06/2009, -5/+9Amazing! With the $50 a month I'm saving on Sprint's plan as compared to AT&T, I'm buying an iPod touch, and a bunch of new music every month to go on it. And, look, here's a real keyboard!
Seriously, the iPhone is a great product, and with age, it certainly can be expected to have features that the Pre won't have in version 1.0.
If Apple would divorce themselves from the silly AT&T exclusive, imagine how dominant they would be. - TheNik, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4I own a Pre and I must admit that I'm relatively disappointed in the lack of _official_ development tools right now. I hope it will get better soon and I plan on developing on it myself, but the guy who wrote the article forgot to mention one thing: It's incredibly simple to make the Pre do anything you want it to do (through webOS or Debian). The homebrew community on this thing is already pretty big and people have been running PSOne emulators on it with almost no problems but sound.
Give it time. - supersteve, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3As for gaming, pfft. If you want to game bring a Nintendo DS with you or something. I haven't seen any iPhone games that could keep me entertained for more than 5 minutes.

- OneManArmy, on 07/06/2009, -4/+7This doesn't change the fact that CURRENTLY the iPhone is a better entertainment than the Pre. And that is what the article is all about.
- pedronym, on 07/06/2009, -2/+5I think that is not a fair comparison. It would be if you were comparing Windows to OSX.
This is similar to me not being able to install another web browser on my PSP or my PS3.
I can never get what's the big deal with this "Apple doesn't allow apps from another places" because I also can't get PS3 demos anywhere outside the PlayStation Store. Same thing with the access of content on Xbox 360 and Live. Both of the situations have one exclusive market where everything there is controlled and specifically allowed by the maker of the product.
What's the big difference?
Although I don't agree with the way it works, people act like the iPhone is the only platform which locks you into an exclusive source for content (apps and etc) which it definitely isn't. And it's also not the first time we've seen this kind of practice. - MrSkills, on 07/06/2009, -2/+5Oh god please don't let this become a mem
- coelomate, on 07/06/2009, -3/+6What a stupid premise for an article.
iPhone Vs. Palm Pre when you can't actually use them for what they were designed: Winner, iPhone.
Yeah, well the iPod touch actually holds up pretty well too. And think of all the money you can save on a data plan if you spend all your time on a plane where you can't surf the net or make calls anyway!
Buried. - 1platypus, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3@TheNik
What makes you think that the Pre is not going to be filled with the same kind of apps in the next few years. - jroussell, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4don't feed the trolls
- patm1987, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4My Blackberry Curve does all of that also. Either it's a direct competitor to both or there's some sort of middle ground between the Blackberry and the iPhone it's trying to inhabit based on some other features you failed to recognize.
- thephosphorbox, on 07/06/2009, -3/+6I fully understand the arguments presented here and they are very valid, but in my own life experience, I still prefer to have a separate device for listening to music/video or playing video games. I'm really OCD about my phone's battery and I can't bring myself to piss away hours and hours of battery life doing non-communication functions on my smartphone. I'm more than happy to tote my mp3 player and my Nintendo DS on a plane while the guy in the seat next to me diddles his iPhone the entire flight, secure in the knowledge that when I step off the plane my battery will still be 90-100% charged.
... and yes, I do own a Palm Pre and I'm not in any way bashing the iPhone (I have a great deal of respect for the iPhone and what it's done for the smartphone market). - devophl, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3If the iPhone was available to other carriers, we wouldn't be talking about the Pre today. Apple sold more 3GS phones in one week than Palm will sell in total this quarter (Pre, Treo, etc). Given Apple's leverage with the iPod and its lead in apps, the iPhone is a juggernaut that won't be toppled anytime soon. I suspect if we see a CDMA iPhone, Verizon and likely Sprint will jump on it and the Pre will be nothing more than a footnote in tech history. But if the exclusivity contract with AT&T prevents this for another 12-18 months, Palm has an opening... one its not moving very fast to exploit (thank you Mojo delay).
- MrSkills, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4Don't worry, he'll never get us from that rang
- teaoat, on 07/06/2009, -2/+5I got to be honest I seriously doubt this guy has a Pre... or if he does have a Pre he doesn't know how to use it very well...
He mentions in the article that Palm should include a "just a phone" mode where you still get SMS but gchat and AIM are turned off... You can already do that on the Pre... I turn off my gchat and AIM all the time to improve my batter life on my Pre.
As for his picking different services you want turned on... You have that ability on the Pre also. I can turn off my Cell Phone radio and turn on wifi or bluetooth...
LEARN TO USE YOUR PHONE!
This guy shouldn't own a smart phone when he lacks the intelligence to figure out something so simple... I wouldnt believe anything this idiot says. - dhmlco, on 07/06/2009, -1/+3Sprint's ads say that it is. Sprint's exec's say that it is. You wishing it's not doesn't make it so.
And I love Roger McNamee's comments, which, if correct, would have meant that the Palm and not Apple would have sold a million phones that first weekend.
They didn't. Apple did, and outsold it five to one with just an upgrade. Palm is left holding the bag with a second-rate phone on a third-rate carrier. - ohreilly, on 07/06/2009, -3/+5Buried for iPhone waffle.
