- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -16/+122Frankly, as a beta, I'm happy to see they were only able to come up with a "Top 5" as opposed to 10 or 20. Not bad, really... and for that matter, I don't even agree with them.
- toxicityj, on 11/07/2007, -22/+110"Do you understand what the word beta means? English *****, do you speak it?"
beta is greek, dumbass. - Wildren, on 10/11/2007, -2/+77Site is down. http://duggmirror.com/apple/TOP_5_Reasons_Why_Leopard_s_UI_Sucks/ works
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 10/11/2007, -11/+80If those were the top five worst features, then Apple's got nothing to worry about with their GUI. I wouldn't mind those at all.
- zioxide, on 10/11/2007, -4/+53Beta is Greek, *****.
- jsully, on 10/11/2007, -2/+45Explain how a translucent menu bar prevents screen burn. Go on, I'll wait.
- Clarkeness, on 10/11/2007, -2/+44I actually kinda of like everything except maybe the "Translucent Menu Bar" maybe they can add the feature to keep the TIGER look but then again you don't always like change it may just take some time to get used to....
- judicar, on 10/11/2007, -12/+48Maybe you should worry more about how much your host sucks.
- renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32***** that shadow looks like it could eat me
- mlem, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33I'm pretty sure the Menu Bar/Spotlight will be fixed -- it just looks BETA to me.
As for those blue icons, I much prefer the icons from previous versions. It was much easier to differentiate icons from each other. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -13/+42I like most of the new features except the bottom tool bar does suck i hate the way it looks. And the top bar, it would of been nice i had the choice how translucent it is, or isn't.
- GregR, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25I think a title of "TOP 5 Things I Dislike About Leopard's UI" would be a more accurate statement - they hardly make it 'suck'.
- Sazafraz, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27oh no.. change.
God Forbid! - dustinmacdonald, on 10/11/2007, -7/+28No, he didn't.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -22/+42"The current beta build of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, released to developers at WWDC ‚’07, is not as polished as what people have come to expect of Apple’s design team"
Do you understand what the word beta means? English *****, do you speak it? - CyrusG, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20I have to agree with you. I'm a Microsoft fanboy and would love the opportunity to get in on the Leopard hating, but that's a pretty lame list. I wish Vista's top 5 design issues were so flattering.
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21Or why that's even a relevant concern in this day and age.
- DiggDuggDone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19My 2 cents would be that the menu bar being translucent is indeed a step in the wrong direction.
Other than that I'd have to say that, um...beta is beta for a reason. - TennisElbow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19I've been using Leopard for a couple weeks now. I absolutely LOVE the bigger drop shadow, the new Dock, and the much slicker running application "blue dot" that appears below the Dock icons. That black triangle was lame, I'm surprised this guy misses it. It looked like something out of Windows 95 it was so bad. But I agree with him in that I hate the translucent menu bar (it's hard to read with some of my wallpapers), and the ugly black spotlight & apple menu icons. The new folder icons in the Finder are hideous; they look like something out of Gnome five years ago. Boring, bland, drab, ugly, cheap-looking. I hope they spiff up these icons before the final release.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19How old is your monitor?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20why are people digging this idiot up? beta isn't a word in greek, it's a letter, it has no meaning apart from the second letter of the greek alphabet. In english however it is an adjective meaning the; preliminary or testing stage of a software or hardware product; "a beta version"; "beta software" (dictionary.com)
- Obsession88, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22but I like pretty glowing lights...
- boxxa, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20I am a Windows/Linux guy, never been a fan of Apple but I have to say that I like the new additions.... Kinda dumb article.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15It's not even a Beta, it's a Developer's Preview, somewhere between Alpha and Beta; still not feature complete, but enough of the APIs are there that application developers can start assuring their programs will continue to work as planned and promised on Leopard.
- durangotang, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16A quick scan of the items he's bitching about makes me laugh. I have been on Leopard now since I got my new Macbook Pro (2.4 Ghz, 4GB RAM, a big upgrade from my PBG4 ;-)
The giant shadow - I love it. It brings what you are working on in focus. As someone who loves Mac OS, I find it frustrating sometimes when I have to continually explain to a person coming from Windows (who is used to full screen Apps), that closing a window doesn't always close the App. As a result, I instruct people to look at the App name that is displayed next to the Apple icon on the top left to see what is their current App. This happens frequently. The shadow lets you know, but isn't too intrusive!
The translucent menu bar REALLY puts the window you're in into center stage. Apps feel more "full screen" while still giving you a broader view. You may need to keep closer reigns on what your desktop is. For example, you don't want a desktop with black and white text (large type or small) on the top of the image. Almost all pictures are fine. I will give him the fact that the option to adjust translucence would be appreciated by some people, and should be there.
Spotlight - It's growing on me. And my favorite color is blue. I see absolutely no problem here. I'd rather have blue highlights than any other color. What would you prefer? Red? The contrast is good and it serves the purpose of highlighting when you've activated spotlight. And if you don't access it, it looks very subtle.
New system icons! Thank God!!! I hated that stupid kindergarden looking home icon and App icon. Now, it looks less cartoony and more subtle. And I like it!
I think that if you want to nit pick, you'll find that from a functional point of view the line that divides Apps from non apps in the doc is missing. I could see there being some confusion there.
Coverflow ROCKS. QUICKLOOK ROCKS. The unified UI rocks. Spotlight is fast and functional as an App launcher. Time Machine is sooooo cool. And Applications binding to Spaces rocks. Just click the App icon, and you whoosh to the Space.
Actually, I didn't think I would think so because I loved Expose so much, but Spaces is soooo cooool. Way better than I thought it would be. I have tried other Virtual Desktops in the past but it never became part of my workflow. With Application binding, it is now. One whole Space is devoted to Safari. I click the icon, or click on a link, and I'm there. I still use Expose, but not as much.
You guys are going to LOVE Leopard! - Roger, on 10/11/2007, -12/+25Author is whining over nothing.
None of those are major issues, I actually disagree with most them. - actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14The etymology of Beta is greek, but I assure you, you will find it in an English dictionary. Kind of like the French word "cache".
- dragon76, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13You get used to it. It's like going from the Mac OS 9 Spatial Finder to the Mac OS X Browser Finder. Eventually you forget what it was like before.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22Thats why its called a Beta...if you have problems with it maybe you should go tell Apple?
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Thats what the Apple OS is about. They have never really given you choice. Choice makes things more complex and less uniform. The developers at Apple decide the perfect setup and give you a few small things you can change and thats it. This keeps everything very simple for uses.
Linux on the other hand has a billion options for even the simplest things. This is great for making everything work and look the way you want, but it can be pretty complex and scary for uses. Does everyone remember the state of beryl options at one point, ouch.
So it depends on what you want. Apple will give you a great looking OS that is simple, practical and will function well, but you can't really mod it much. Linux can be anything you want, but making it be everything you want might make your head explode - sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10it makes it easier to see in spaces, i'm guessing.
- vagarach, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15ah yes, but english is a language filled with borrowed words, from many diverse languages. Beta, in its usage here, is more english than greek, wherein it is just a letter.
- illt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11this article is ***** terrible.
How the hell does this even get dugg.
The larger drop shadows, bright glowing indicators (as opposed to small black triangles), and most of the other UI changes greatly increase usability, and are huge improvements fundamentally from an ergonomic/human factors standpoint.
One UI change that i hop isn't permanent (or hopefully yet to be added) is the animated folder. I.E. when you dragged a file over a folder in previous versions of OSX, the folder would visually pop open. The folders in the current beta are static images. - aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8To compromise, I reckon they should use the same folder icon as Tiger, remove the pinstripes on it and darken the blue a little bit.
- mattprice, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8There's a reply button past the first level now. Feel free to use it. ;)
- nonzzero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Finder in Leopard is a very, VERY welcome change. It feels like a file manager should feel now. For christ's sake, the old Finder didn't even change the number of icon columns as the window was resized. It was a mess.
Finder now needs one of two things: A drop stack like Path Finder has, or file cut like Windows Explorer has. Without those things, it's still a little too cumbersome to move files from one folder to another. - virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6you CAN remove it, just go to Finder's options.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14Jeez, man. Punctuation.
- joel8x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Only thing I agree with him on is the top tool bar being transparent is bad and should have options to change it. It does not look right - almost like a teenager's hacked up customization.
- vashmyvindows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Or change them, like you can do in any OS since...ever...
- xrenjrvt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Maybe not, but it had to be said.Still these things don't matter, the cult of mac will get behind the final product. Apple will tell you what you like, and you will like it.
- davidhildreth, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9i'm not sure that those 5 problems mean that the whole ui "sucks" but he makes some good points.
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'm pretty sure the reason for the folder change, and in particular the change in perspective, was for coverflow in finder.
- SwabTheDeck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I would hope so because the dock is transparent by default in every version.
- KMartSheriff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I've used a computer on an HD Plasma screen (mostly used for TV). For 30 min? No, for 5 hours. Guess what, nothing happened. There might of been a slight mark, but it went away in 5 minutes.
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9H e - i s.
- dragon76, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6FYI a LOT of applications DO NOT WORK. All RealBasic applications crash, any applications that use Input Manager SIMBL hacks...Microsoft Office will crash on start if you use an assistant, blah blah blah. Let me tell you though, the new features are SCHWEET. LOVIN coverflow Finder and the new Dock
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6agreed, the 5 best ui features on windows are much more flawed than these
- Qoogirl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I thought I was the only one! Front Row had a very nice grey bubble shadow thingy around selected items before. It was very sleek and understated in a sophisticated way. I dislike the adoption of AppleTV's menu style. AppleTV should have adopted Front Row's, not the other way around. That glaring blue glow reminds me of what looked cool in 1993 in computer land. It feels outdated and cheap. :( Has Apple ever retro-updated design features in lieu of 'mistakes,' I wonder?
- pfranz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think the blue dot is a good change too. I think many people not familiar with Macs don't realize that the black triangle means the app is still open (likely they don't notice it). Many people that use my computer just close all the windows associated with the app, but don't close the app. Hopefully this will finally fix that.
