- MarcTheLad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30A high school in my neighborhood purchased 50 iBooks. All were stolen within a week (a team of hoodlums drove up in some pickup and rolled the carts away while they were unattended). I imagine that those lappies will be locked up somehow.
- spudge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I worked in IT for a school district near where I live now, and we did a roll out of 2,500 desktop PCs that took us around 2 weeks. So yes, 3 days is quite impressive, especially for 3,000.
- jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29No, I think that Apple would send a few employees to help with the setup.
- monkeymad2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33Damn you're lucky bastards:P
Wish my school was that cool....
Not much to set up when you're starting a mac for the first time though... - SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+271. The pictures weren't taken by the school, just this random guy.

Cut him some slack! =D - MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36Dude, they bought 3,000 iBooks at a time... you don't think Apple would send them a couple farking shirts at the least? Hell, if I were the Apple sales rep handling that order, I'd have sent them some bloody hookers!
- chancesarent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Lets hope we don't get a repeat of 'the great Virginia Ibook riot' in about 4 years when these are sold off for 50 bucks a piece.
- Stephenjobs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26That's so cool. The pictures of all the iBooks stacked are just beautiful.
- jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Then why are people in the pictures wearing the official Apple employee shirt?
- GeneralChang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20 Not sure what this 1 to 1 program is (1 for every student?)
Having worked for a Broward county high school's IT dept I'm sure we'll see alot of discount refurb ibooks within 3 months.
Miramar High School is known for being a rough school, its considered being in the ghetto, although I hear things are getting better there. I worked at a different high school and among the weird things people brought in.
1. laptop filled with what appeared to be a thick amount of syrup and chicken grease.
2. Laptop which a girl going through a pyromania phase had set fire to, her mom claimed it shorted out and caught fire, but the fire dept said no.
3. Laptop with a broken LCD that was busted when a student blocked a punch with his laptop bag.
4. Cracked laptop case and touch pad popped out because student "accidentally" sat on it.
those were just the most memorable. - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Kids should be *forced* to learn MORE than just Windows, imo.
They should have experience in all major OS': Windows, Linux and Mac.
That way they can easily adapt to a new environment. - gollo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Reimaging an identical system takes no more time whether it be with a mac or an ibm compatible.
- Vorex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21@ whammypower: Those are called group policy's that are distributed down =P No setup on the client end really.
OS/X Server has the same type of setup, you can distribute all sorts of security policy's per user or per group. - mtbz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16http://www.broward.k12.fl.us/miramarhigh/
From their website, one laptop for each student.
OK, those are the facts, but I feel that I really need to comment on this. From my personal experience, having laptops in the classrooms is generally a *bad* thing. I'm all about technology in the classroom, but only when it's needed and not used just because it's there. Let's face it, when a computer is in the classroom, it will be distracting, not only to the person using it, but to everyone else in the room because a bright screen is in their field of vision. I can't remember the amount of times I would be sitting in class and everyone with a laptop would either be A. Checking their email. B. Surfing the web on a topic completely irrelevant to what was being discussed (I even saw a guy checking out handguns during class, which scared the crap out of me). C. IMing or D. Watching streaming video of a sporting event going on. Now mind you, this is in college and even graduate school. I suspect that some high school students would abuse it even more. So teachers, please, please, please, for the sake of education, don't constantly use laptops, a projector, a board, and dry erase marker/chalk is really all you need. Your students will probably pay attention more. Also, as a final comment, I already see a lot of computers in that room, and also dell boxes. Was it really worth spending so much money on those laptops? - whammypower, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I'm sure there's a lot of security features a high school would implement, though (heck, there's a TON of them on the Windows boxes at my school...)
- MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Of course they do... just like every other computer company in the world. Schools can get all kinds of insane prices on computer goods (among other things...). Now, if they'd learn how to negotiate better prices for textbooks... THAT would be something.
- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I'd be even more impressed if they just posted the text online. I mean 70 bucks for a 200 page book wtf is that? (you know that money isn't going to the author, just annother example of middlemen; see RIAA MPAA getting in the way and ripping people off for little or no services.)
- mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -9/+223000 dell's wouldn't all be identical... should be, but won't. Just to make things worse, who'd expect windows to do the same thing 3000 times in a row?
- unbrooken007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15i go there. monday should be a really good day.
- i6koi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Interesting that this picture also contains Dell boxes!
http://www.jaronbrass.com/gallery/1to1_miramar/Pages/28.jhtml - zoomie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Not obsolete...just not the latest and greatest. They're still perfectly useful for getting high school work done.
- TheShrike, on 10/12/2007, -15/+24Let's see this happen with 3,000 dell laptops in a week.
Nope. Not gonna happen. - joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Most kids probably have PC's at home. Giving them a Mac will help them learn to adjust to new systems rather than locking them to Windows.
- Vorex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You unpacked 3 per minute? and had 200 seperate disks? Your friggin amazing sir.
- Vorex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Oh yes it could easily, You can pay an additional $50 per machine and Dell will image them, place asset tags, and submit reports property update reports to capital assets during assembly @ Dell
Unpack, Place in laptop bags, done. - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Those are the ones being replaced by this swarmy of iBooks. Yes I said swarmy (swarm + army = swarmy) :)
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10And next month they will be 3000 outdated iBooks.
But that is pretty cool, would be hella fun to setup 3000 iBooks. - gollo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'd like more info. They make it sound like they did no prep at all and just got delivery, popped open the boxes and handed them out. Re-imaging a system doesn't take much longer then 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the hard drive and if they multi-casted those systems they could do hundreds at a time.
- jours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uh, yeah. Impressive indeed. I've seen companies with IT departments that couldn't *unpack* 3,000 machines in three days...much less configure them for a roll out...
- Hollywood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not enough info for me...
How many people were doing the roll out...
Were the machines all unwrapped before the 3 days... - Nemokrad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I was a part of that install team, and no we were not Apple employees. The school district has a dedicated install company. But we did get those cool shirts for the job.
- TheShrike, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11So...basically... your argument is that PCs are better because there are more of them? That schools should exclusively buy PCs because Windows has some large (but dwindling) marketshare?
Well hey! Why don't you stop downloading music off of P2P networks, 'cause there are more people paying for music than stealing it. Hey! let's all use blogger instead of wordpress, 'cause blogger is obviously better, since it is popular. Hey! Why don't we follow the herd in this great big stampede! Wow... check out those lemmings! Falling off a cliff en masse sounds like one heck of a time!! - pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yes i remember doing logo writer on an old Macintosh when i was in second grade, those were some fun learning times.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why? Do you really need a computer in History class or English class or Physics class or any other class aside from "computer class"?!
I was in school not that long ago (it has been about a decade) and I can't imagine that school has evolved so much in a mere ten years that you can't read a book, listen to a teacher, take notes or write an essay without an expensive computer?
Further, have you seen how kids treat schoolbooks? Because they know the books didn't cost them a dime. Why would they treat a computer any differently? And what are you going to do when little Johnny has it stolen by another kid or someone out on the street on his way home? Are you going to make the family on a free lunch program pay to replace the laptop you forced them to have, because they couldn't afford an alarm system on their house?! - MarcTheLad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Much love for ghost deployments
- kokobaroko, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Steve Jobs IS disabled :]
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think that was for distributing settings, etc. to the computers for setup. Notice the G5 and switch on the floor acting as a server?
- MrWizzle, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Why would they have to learn Windows? I know people who use Macs exclusively for work (and never touch a PC).
- zigziggityzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm a local rep for apple, I've done this before. They do send their employees to help, at least until they get the hang of it.
- kyrobeshay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4agreed with Xiol.
I've been a Windows user my whole life since 4th grade, up until a year ago when i was persuaded to buy a powerbook, and i do have to say, i'm glad i did it. It was a great, and still is, learning process in figuring out a different machine and solving issues with it on my own. Now i'm getting into linux and i wish that i could've gotten into it a bit earlier. Figuring out how to work new os's is puzzling and mind stimulating, and will allow you to function in any area set in.
Maybe this new development with installing XP on the intel macs will help. - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lucky bastards. All we got at my high school were Dells. Even my old middle school replaced their G3 imacs with new Dell Optiplexes. I'm stuck in Dell land at Chico State too. lol.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And tissues? Teachers have to provide those....
- Nemokrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.apple.com/education/k12/onetoone/
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5to the above one.... to farfromsubtle
No child left behind and Robin Hood in the act. - burningheretic6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought schools were meant to teach, math, science and English. Maybe in Australia we are behind the times learning mathsscienceenglish not windowsmac osxlinux etc etc.
I guess we are, no one hear would dream of schools getting a laptop per child. Hell we bearly get textbooks... - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3^ Apple calls them Quads.
- cal0001, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7it's not that hard. I did 200 in one hour last year just open the box stick in the imige disk (pre made) it's not that hard.
I Don't think there is anything cooler than 3,000 iBooks well maybe 3,000 MacBook Pros - everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5what a waste of money. what do they need 3000 ibooks for? one for each kid? why? i can see that thing about colleges giving away mini ipods, but whole ibooks? and why ibooks? they better have some top notch security down at that school. i can just see someone breaking in and taking off with a nice chunk of those things. but i mean jesus... 3000 times about 400 bucks each (looked on ebay)? i wanna know what highschool has a million dollars sitting around to buy this *****.
- Laughingman234, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4holy crap...thats like a mac geeks wet dream...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4my high school has 30 23" (lampshade type) imacs in every room.. so its pretty much a 1:1 installation..
my computer graphic design class has quad g5s for every student. yeah.. the school just got a 50million dollar investment by the city last year (and 150 million for remodeling) -
