if a person is running a server, like ftp or http... which runs live, you might be doing active live scannin of files, but not for yourself.
but for the endusers... who are on windows... and can get infected.
you get a windows virus while using linux, it wont do ***** to your system, but if someone grabs a infected file off your server, and downloads it to a windows system, they are gonna get infected...
thats the main reason for virii scanners on nix, to protect windows users - cheesetoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Please don't use Symantec if you are using a Mac. Symantec's Mac products have always sucked and continue to suck. Their programs are of course written for Windows, and then ported over to the OS X platform, which has resulted in buggy and resource intensive software. Of course there are zero viruses that affect OS X, but if you want to be extra safe use ClamXav -http://www.clamxav.com/- it's free and is not susceptible to to multiple heap overflows.
- _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anybody explain to me why on earth you would ever need antivirus software. If a virus ever comes out for mac? I do not have norton on any of the twelve macs my family owns. A couple years ago when the all had windows machines they all had norton installed. They never have any problems any more since I put them on apple machines. I feel completely safe without virus software on my mac. I am surprised that Symantec still makes antivirus software for the mac.
- PDubNYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Symantec's Mac products have always sucked "
umm, wrong. Norton Utilities was pretty damn good back in the OS 8/9 days, with the obvious exception of CrashGuard. I agree that their products are now *****, ever since OS X really.
"Can anybody explain to me why on earth you would ever need antivirus software."
Macs can still pass viruses along, so corporations and schools tend to want to limit the spread, even if the machines themselves don't suffer from them. We use Virex. It catches Word viruses here and there, but otherwise you forget it's there. - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1macs can still act as a carrier and pass along infected files to other pc's. I think AV on a mac is more likely in an environment like a school or university where there is a mix of platforms, and when they want to keep infected files from spreading around to a minimum
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't Symantec products always make your computer more vulnerable?
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Symantec is old school.
- history1me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You don't need virus protection, especially the likes of Symantec, when using os X (for now, like chesterton said).
- 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why on earth would you run antivirus on your mac to begin with?
- marmaduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm so glad that's the stuff my school provides for me...

Amen. I work as Sys Admin in a public school district and that is the reason we have Antivirus software installed on our Macs. And yes, there have been times when a Staff member got an email on a Mac and then forwarded it to a PC just to find out that the PC's antivirus software detected a virus. - orbitalpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
too bad Macers can use ZoneAlarm. There the best IMO. Way better then AVG. - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you use Anti-Virus on the Mac, you probably should switch back to a PC anyway.
DO NOT USE anti-virus software on a mac. Corporations love to load up that stuff on Mac corporate laptops. Luckily you can usually format and run without. (Aka Yahoo's army of Mac Laptops) - Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Symantec is crap. Never run this on a mac, if your mac still function with this POS on it, your lucky.

- hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this flaw affects all (windows/mac) not just Mac.
========================
The bug is present in most of Symantec's security software, including Windows and Mac versions of Symantec AntiVirus, Symantec Norton AntiVirus and Symantec Norton Internet Security, for both home users and enterprises.

http://www.ecommercetimes.com/rsstory/47967.html - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a mac and I There aren't viruses for it. Why? because Apple's are used by professionals. Not by 15 year olds who can't get laid, and sit at home all day making viruses as their bitch towards society cause their dads wont get them Xbox 360's. Or sit on this site all day
- multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that I feel like a complete idiot for using Norton on my PC. I'm going to go hide in a corner.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeesh, as if we needed more evidence to avoid Symantec products? Even PcAnywhere is getting so bloated it's losing functionality :(
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It has happened before...
- chesterton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank goodness we don't need to use anti-virus software. (For now.)
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Doesn't Symantec products always make your computer more vulnerable?"
Yep. digg+ - dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoever installed AV on mac is a complete idiot
- clemonator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hey geekologist.... Shoulda had a V8 moment as AVG, although for Leenix, does not have a OS X client.
What category of spammer should I file you under? - JR007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand why people still even use Symantec products. Move onto something better and more reliable.
- arcanelinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well I dont care I use Linux and dont have any problems with viruses. Even if i did I Have a FREE anti virus Klamav!!! WIndows Sucks and well I really would like a Mac so Digg+ for the emphasis on how it sucks to be in a virus filled world
- tomaburque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fun fact of the day: About 300 new viruses a month discovered on the Windows platform. Last known new virus discovered on the Mac platform was more than three years ago.
- unkn0wn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not use the free ClamXAV? Apple even ships it with OSX Server.
When a major vulnerability is OSX is exploited and all of you are screwed, us "idiots installing AV software on a Mac" will be laughing in your face. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about chinaging the headline to reveal the whole story - something like 'Norton AV Sucks!' ?
I only last night had someone who had upgraded to NAV '06 and had it just break for no apparent reason. I use McAfee on everything an apart from one really odd clash between an ancient SHARP USB printer driver and the Buffer Overflow Protection (probably a result that SHARP's printer driver was crap and causing buffer overflows) it's never given me a single problem. It sits quietly in the system tray and pops up a small understated window whan a virus or pirce of spyware is detected and does nothing else. It's easy to remove, upgrade and straightforward to configure, and above all it's reliable, uses minimal resources and stable. In my experience NAV is non of the above. - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anything "Symantec" is crap. Use real products. (excption is Ghost).
I un-install that crap daily - install NOD or AVG - pull tons of Trojans out - educate customer.
alllll... day..... loooong..... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AVG is the way to go. saying that, Symantec makes much more than just AV software. Seeing as they recently bought out Veritas and now own one of the best enterprise backup packages out there, they must not be hurting too bad.....
- Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Symantec's Mac products have always sucked and continue to suck."
Symantec's products have always sucked period. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This explains how they were so certain in their statements made earlier this year that OS X was in for some major security incursions.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you are looking for best av software... try Kaspersky AV
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would you install anti virus auto protect on UNIX????
- mcsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why in the world would we pay these opportunists to take care of what aint broke. i mean, OS X developers do a heck of a job avoiding the windows virus revolution - who has problems with viruses (other than the windows community?)
- Majin_Raditz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why the hell would you install an AV on a mac? Weard, +digg
- silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AVG is the way to go. saying that, Symantec makes much more than just AV software. Seeing as they recently bought out Veritas and now own one of the best enterprise backup packages out there, they must not be hurting too bad.....
Perhaps they are hurting, and they did that so they don't /die/ - ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of you are just preaching to the choir in this room. Symantec is raking in the cash by having huge OEM deals with companies like Dell, and then use name recognition to sell subscriptions to all the noobs out there, clueless ma & pa, and such. I have encountered several old ladies who religiously buy the A/V subs yet couldn't really answer what the software was supposed to be for. They didn't have a good concept of what a computer virus even was.
People get rich selling ***** to stupid people. This is no exception. - abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sure hope symantec fixes this soon, it's users must be very concerned (all ten of them).
- _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anything "Symantec" is crap. Use real products. (excption is Ghost).
I un-install that crap daily - install NOD or AVG - pull tons of Trojans out - educate customer.
alllll... day..... loooong.....
What? Ghost is not the exception. It is junk also.
PS... The virus that was discovered like 3 years ago was for mac os 9. Not OS X. - rosemat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Symantec is crap, for myself and everyone elses computer i've worked on its given me way more problems then its solved
- snoudude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Symantec is still in business how .....???"
They are the 4th largest software company in the world.... Putting Symantec's AV software on a Mac only helps to keep from spreading virus code to other platforms. There have been a couple viruses for OS X but you would have had to go around what Apple (and good practices for any Unix) has in place to even be exposed to them. Really, the biggest value to a commercial product like Symantec's AV software is that they are constantly looking for security issues (virus signatures is just one portion) and updating the protection schemes vs. smaller companies.
As far as Symantec's software being "bloated" find me another software vendor that has reduced the lines in their code... Slackware .91 used to scream on a 386sx25 with 4mb of ram and a 40mb drive and no video card. Aside from Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux most installers wouldn't even start on anything less than a PIII with 128mb of RAM.
I still have my collection of DOS viruses on 5 1/4" floppies though I've gotten rid of my drive a couple of years ago - I guess that's one way to be protected :)
Have fun and learn some Unix! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Symantec is still in business how .....???
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Only idiots would install a virus scanner or a mac right now anyway...

http://sethnieman.blogspot.com - Mabu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I didn't realize that anybody still used Symantec software? Our Indian-outsourced-software-development-company has not produced a decent product in almost ten years. Symantec AV/Internet Security is the only program I've seen that can cut a PCs performance in half. Bloated, crap!
http://www.nerd.com/ - geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Symantec is useless bloated *****. Just get AVG Free. No crap.
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Quick! Here's your new "Lets Make a Smashing Apple Headline"
_______ software actually makes ________ LESS secure!!!!111!!!!!
Here you go, now to use it all you have to do is fill out the first blank with some software that has a bug or security problem. The second blank, just fill in with your fav software name in there.
IT WORKS!!! It really works in ANY situation!
Leave it to the apple fan boies to blow anything (resembling a penis) out of proportion just to get press. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Who'S using OSx anyway? :)
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0they don't write real software for macs why would they write viruses.

What is Digg?
