- kolywater, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2first thing to do is make the interface more fitting of the iphone. currently, it just looks like a crappy webpage. take a look at some of the other iphone apps for UI ideas. remember, don't just design it like you would design for a desktop.. try to take advantage of multi-touch.
- juliohm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you just want to quickly put media files into iPhone without using iTunes, you can do the following:
* Via Installer app, install "lighttpd"
* Configure lighttpd to allow directory listing
* Upload files to the default /var/root/Sites folder via iBrickr (in Windows) or iFuntastic (in Mac)
* Erase default /var/root/Sites/index.html
(I'm not discussing the detailes on how to do this.. too much talk... but if you're a programmer, like me, you'll figure out how to do all that)
In the iPhone, from Safari, visit the local address http://127.0.0.1 (http://localhost won't work out of the box.. need more config) and you will be able to see all files and folders inside /var/root/Sites... You can navigate through files an folders pretty fine if you don't give a ***** about user interface.
Using this, you can upload PDF, DOC, XLS, TXT, MP3 and probably video files too... all this without using iTunes to sync anything.
If one is clever enough, he/she could write a web application that can be executed/viewed locally in Safari. PHP and Python packages are available for download as third party downloads for iPhone... so it's just a matter of getting things together.
For now, if you don't mind using a crappy-textual-link interface in Safari, you can easily store eBooks in PDF/DOC format, spreadsheets.. and access them from the local filesystem without any hassle from iTunes.
Hope this helps.
Cheers - strutton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The iPhone does have a tilde "~" character. When typing a URL hit the (@123) key, then the (upcase/caps) key, the tilde will appear along with * $ # ! ' ^ ; ( )
- madvibe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good to know. Thanks
- netburnr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why not tie it in with Orb? Actually I'd be REALLY surprised if Orb doesn't update their software/webpage to support the iPhone.
The nice part of Orb is that it checks your home upload and current download and then recompresses the video down to a bitrate for the connections you are on. - madvibe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1A quick way to stream vids over your local network on a mac is to turn on Personal Web Sharing in the Sharing page in System Prefs. Go to the Sites folder in your Home directory and back up the stuff that's in there, then drop some vids in there. Open http://yourip/~youracountname/ in Safari on the iPhone. An index list of the vids will show up. Click on one of the links and it will open up. It's not the most elegant way to do it but it works. This should work with pics and music too. If you know html you can make a web page with all your media links on it. This should tie your over until something more robust comes along.
Three things to note 1. the iPhone doesn't have a tilda character "~" so just copy the link at the bottom of the Sharing page. 2. sometimes the vids don't play the first time you click them. 3 make sure your media is compatible with the iPhone... no avi's or windows media ect. Happy Streaming. - MiDri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Comments? Questions? Suggestions? Anything?
