- Jimu00, on 10/10/2007, -4/+144Ok, I'll just keep on using the default ringer as I always have. I figure if I'm annoyed by everyone else's ringtones, I don't want to contribute to the problem.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -3/+97Stop. Hammer Time.
- Morphinity, on 10/10/2007, -2/+62My phone is on vibrate 24/7.
- giroguy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+39its not really steve or apple making you pay an extra dollar on top of your purchased song.. its the record industry. thus making them equal to all other purchasable ring tones.
- bcgaden, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36The issue is that a ring tone is a separate license for music from the record companies. If you wrote a song there are a ton of different ways that you could license that song for use in various mediums... you have a digital rights license, CD duplication rights, movie license, radio license, ring tone license, etc... In other words if you get rights to use the song on a TV show it's not the same as rights to use it in a movie... the same goes for songs you "buy".... The fact is that I bet the original license agreement with Apple didn't cover ring tones. Seeing as this is now a major source of income from record companies, they made Apple charge for this "right". Don't blame Apple... blame the record companies. I would have hoped that the DRM free music included rights to the ring tone.... let's see if they do that.
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32I don't have an Iphone but I do use the CTU ringtone. Makes me feel like everything is on the line everytiome I pick up the phone.
- scoobycarolan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27i agree. Its kinda nice knowing my phone sounds like a phone.
- zengonzo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24If there's one device that should simply let you use your own songs as ringers, without hassle, it's the iPhone.
An entire buck extra just to pick a short clip from a song to play on your phone? That's *****. I don't care how many companies are doing it. - ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26*****. The iPhone HAS those songs on it. You've purchased them. You OWN them. It can play them. Why the ***** can't it play one when a call comes in?
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25You pay for a song. You own it. It's on the device. The device can play it back. Why the ***** can't it play it back when a call comes in? There is absolutely no reason for this other than pure nickel-and-dime-you greed.
- Krumm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Kinky!
- AllenL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Link to CTU ringtone for anyone interested http://www.ccir.ed.ac.uk/~jad/ringtone.html
- inkhead, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17FYI this has nothing to do with Steve Jobs and Apple. Last year the RIAA "snuck" into DMCA law that ringtones are considered separate, and that profits have to go to the record label. This means that if you own a song and turn it into a ringtone technically it's "illegal". This is the only reason Apple is requiring you to pay for ringtones. Once again the RIAA is screwing people over.
Please digg this comment so everyone can scream MURDER to the RIAA. Most people shouldn't worry, you can take your songs and turn them into snippets with all kinds of tools out there an upload them to your iPhone. My guess is iTunes will only let you modify songs you paid for the ringtones because of the stupid LAW that got passed.
SPREAD the WORD!!!
ALSO JUST google for mp3 ringtones, there are thousands of them out there, also check out howardforums.com - Chakat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17it's still a buck more than people with uncrippled phones pay.
- xOpifex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14A lot more annoying than ringtones are the new custom rings people have to hear when they call into your phone! I hate it, why would you ever want someone to hear baby got back every time they call you?
- dandonia, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17You are what people would call a "dumb" fanboy. You have just defended a totally ridiculas move on apples part. You already own the song, its already on your phone, why should you have to pay for it. They put a great spin on it saying its only 0.99 well big deal you already own it, any other phone would have let you do it
- Shaggy3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Apple needs to let us make our own ringtones in Garageband and import them over to iTunes.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12me as well...guess i'm not as special as I thought...I just like to hear my CTU ringtone, pick up my phone, and scream "we don't have enough time" to people every once in a while.
- Chakat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Apple could have done what motorola does and let you use any song you want as a ringtone, but that would be too easy now, would it?
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11most non-apple mp3 phones allow you to use any MP3 as a ring tone, which makes this move by apple hard to justify
- Chompy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Ringtones do not make you cool, they make you a tool.
- dandonia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9nearly every phone on the market thats got mp3 tech. Try the Samsung line if you like. What you think because it didnt come from the apple store that you didnt get the music from somewhere. Any 3 phone has the ability to go online and buy a ring tone and pretty much any phone with wap
- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Apple is well aware that lots of people aren't going to pay for ringtones. The $0.99 thing is for people who are not at all technical.
- DesertSessions, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Why all the bitching and put down?
Okay okay, sure we can all put ringtones on our iphones for free right now, I do it all the time. But what about those people who would rather not have to go through that crap just for a damn ringtone? I know plenty of people who are just way too computer illiterate to even set up an email account, much less put ringtones on their iphone through a "hack". You'll be bitching when your relatives keep asking you to put new ringtones for them. I know I don't wanna be called from a nice time under the sheets for that *****.
So, if your one of those people who know how....Great, good for you. You don't need to pay the 99 cents that you were gonna go buy a bag of cheetos with.
And for those who don't have the know how nor tiny bit of patience? Sweet, new ringtones at a cheap price of 99 cents. Enjoy, you computer illiterate human you. - ReinMasamuri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Fair Use allows personal, non-commercial derivative works of music you purchase (such as a Mix CD or a ring tone you want to make yourself)
A license only comes into it when you're selling said derivative work like apple wants to.
The record companies ring their hands in evil delight because apple (currently) only offers music that is laced with DRM. This gives apple the choice to either allow their members to strip the DRM and make their own ringtones (which would piss the record companies off), or make customers pay for the ring tones because technically the apple software is what's making the ring tones.
This could all be avoided if Apple would just let us use the whole song. You are then selling it as the song itself to be listened too as a full song. Therefore the original license is still effective.
Until of course, the Record Companies decide to start making separate licenses for how MUCH you listen to a song :P - DesertSessions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6hmmm...good point. Sad reality.
- tidu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6No, you were. They know better than you.
- mingistech, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I agree with the above posters. Music ringtones are just annoying. Don't pay apple for ringtones....and don't add ur own.
- subxero37, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I wasn't planning on it...
- kwanbis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6you posted what i was about to say. Totally agree. The greedy ones are the music labels (as always).
- Trocisp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yes, because we need more quotes from movies on digg...
And the correct joke would've been... "There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's opinions... and Fan boys..." - CodePoet82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And of course, then there are people like one of my friends, who intentionally makes everyone who calls him listen to Kenny G. just because people hate having to hear it. ;)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -16/+20Its 50 cents less than most other people, and guess what, you actually GET the song with it. Not a bad deal imo.
- Thorsten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't care whose fault this is.
But its absolutely stupid that I have to pay $1 at apple and nothing whenI use MP3s with my current phone. - Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4the phone manufacture lets you do what you want it's the carrier who screws you... in this case it's apple (the phone manufacturer) who screws you
- keviniskool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Collaborate and Listen.
- tillsixam, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I still have a bagphone...
- Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5There's nothing wrong with charging a 99c "stupid tax" for people stupid enough to pay twice for something.
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Looks like your reasonable argument is being buried. How typical.
- gowans007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Rip CD to MP3 put on a phone.
All phones here support MP3 reingtones which people can make, share (bluetooth) etc.
All of my friends have them, not one person ever pays, I would say thats the common thing here in the UK - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -3/+7I think its ***** that you should have to pay twice to use one song as a ringtone, but really, I don't know how many people are so obsessive that they change their ringtone to a different song every day. That extra $0.99 would probably last me a month at least.
- CrumpetUp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5tell me more.
- wakkow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I thought the point of this feature is that you cut your own using a tool in iTunes. Sooo, you're already doing the work.
- DesignerScott, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4WTF is up with ringtones anyway. My girlfriend and I just picked up two sony ericsson w810 phones for free with ATT! Can use any mp3 or m4a as a ringtone, it has a decent mp3 player. About the only thing I don't like about it is that it uses memory stick pro duos for memory!
I can't believe all of the dopes of the world actually paying for ringtones. - adamchristopher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4so all of these require my to hack my iphone?
- 3rdbillygoat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hell yeah! Such an obvious and great idea!
- DiggMasterJ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Remember the good ol' days before polyphonic?
- Thorsten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hey fxspec06 damdonia is absolutely right
Besides you write like you could do that with the iPhone you can't.
You can buy songs, but you cannot use those as ring tones. I would love Apple for that if you could but you can't you can buy these ringtones only at home I believe, and its ridiculous that you have to pay for them. absolute BS - DesertSessions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If someone is gonna go through all that trouble, might as well just use iToner.
- dcbebop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4This is what's wrong with the RIAA/DRM. I can't believe a cropping / subset of a song is entitled to an entirely new license, it seems so asinine.
I have no problems paying for a song to begin with, but when you pay for it in its entirety, you should be able to do anything you want with it besides resell it without having to repay for its use. -
