- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11reminds me of when my buddy got everything in his storage shed stolen, the theives logged onto the internet on his computer and his MSN automatically signed in. I called in a favor to my friend who worked for Microsoft, who grabbed the IP addresses they used, and I tracked down who owned the IP addresses, and turned it in to the police. They got a warrant and found all the stolen stuff from 16 other storage sheds and a bunch of drugs!!! It was great...good times, good times...
- pixelwerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This sorta reminds me of the guy that shipped a three ring binder with keys glued to the inside and "apple" scrawled on the cover to a scammer who tried to buy his Powerbook on eBay.

Totally different story, but point being: It's fun to ***** with thieves. - Numbski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just a thought. I haven't implemented this yet, but I really need to.
Set up OpenVPN on your firewall at home/work (you do have one, right?) There's an option to be aggressive about re-connection, giving your laptop a private, accessible IP address at all times. Allow the software firewall to get ssh connections inbound. Starting with the newer model powerbooks, there's an iSight camera built in, so you can get a picture of your theives. Extra credit is to allow Apple Remote Desktop and VNC from your remote private address range. Could have all sorts of fun, AND get the public IP address from ssh without the theives ever knowing. There are console-mode IAX2 phone clients available. I'll have to test if I could start one remotely and have it call me, or call the police with a recorded messages static my current IP address.
Now all I need is a built-in GPS receiver on my laptop. Then I can get exact coordinates. ;) - jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://web.archive.org/web/20060218172154/http://cgi.ebay.com.au/STOLEN-Apple-Powerbook-17-Chronology-Sydney-24-Jan-06_W0QQitemZ8757957596QQcategoryZ4606QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
- Sashwan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After eBay took it down, the item has now turned into a book lol... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/STOLEN-Apple-Powerbook-17-Chronology-Sydney-24-Jan-06_W0QQitemZ8757957596QQcategoryZ4606QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2stop following me!... i wont give you back the f*king powerbook!!!... argh...
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I was ebay, I'd remove the auction.
It's not an auction it's a public notice. Should be pulled immediately. - aspirinetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i'll try this if someone steals my powerbook
i mean, if i ever buy one... - stolenapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hello Diggers,
I am the poster of this STOLEN APPLE eBay listing, I found your site here as I received about 10 questions from people that said that my listing was being pushed on Digg so I was curious and came for a look. Very interesting site! Good concept.
The listing had to end as it was not selling any item, we have now corrected that technicality and relisted it now so that it meets eBay guidelines. I imagine it is just getting local (AUS) visits now so hopefully it is achieving what we set out for it to do. This not a scam and nor was the original listing, we are not listing this to sell an item at a stupid price, $50 for the chronology and the 2 books is fine, I hope it stays that low!
Thanks once again for your interest, your influence was amazing! And oh yeah...I now Digg! Also, I love that spelling checker for posts, brilliant!

^_^ hehe cant wait till he's busted - stolenapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hello Diggers,
UPDATE *** Chatswood Police have done their community proud for we can now say that we have now collected our Apple Powerbook 17" from Chatswood Police station earlier today. All data is intact along with a few additional downloads that the user has placed on the desktop. The data on the desktop is not fit for publication as it contains graphic images and movies! We have investigated in detail what the user did with our laptop and amongst other things, interestingly, the last website that the user looked at before the laptop was recovered was a legal help website. Draw your own conclusions! Acting on information related to IP address and phone numbers, Chatswood Police executed a search warrant on premises in Sydney and recovered our stolen Apple Powerbook. An individual has been charged with receiving and investigations continue! We have no additional information about this case but will post as more comes to hand.

- tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why do people always feel the need criticize people's spelling or grammar to make themselves feel better/smarter?
- aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2pure genious .
- norz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1link is dead
- rockyrobins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'd be great if they catch the sucker, just on the basis of thier own stupidity
- Royal0rleans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1read it, the theives saw the ebay auction
- norz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thank you very much, I could find the original link on web archive. :)
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Am I the only one here who sees an act of desperation in play? This isn't "genius". It's stupidity.
First of all, if you actually have usable dirt on a thief, you act on it. You don't sit there with a billboard yelling to the world, "Hey we've got dirt on you!".
It's a pathetic attempt at scaring the criminal into confessing when in reality, you've got nothing."
#sigh# You didn't read the article very carefully did you? The police and media have full details of the case and are acting on it now.
DUFUS! - anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand why this is on eBay though? Can someone tell me?
- skitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Little problem with their statements - they claim they can track where these guys live, yet they still have not gotten this information and are offering a reward for it. I am a bit skeptical that they do in fact have this info. I would like to see them get their laptop back as much as anyone else (besides the thieves), but their story is fulla holes.
- tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The real morons in the story here, are the ones who placed the ebay ad to brag about how stupid the thieves are.
They write:
"Because of their outright stupidity we have now been able to investigate our email log files and retreive the actual IP address used by their active registered Unwired Wireless modem, great huh? We can even Ping it, they are still using it!!!! Before they actually checked the email we decided to send them an email of the pictures below (proper real images mind you) to freak them out a bit and then after they checked the email we followed that email with another informing them that we now had their actual IP address, which we do. Ahhhhhhhh, Gotcha!!! "
So basically, they had a hot lead and a way to capture the criminals. But instead of acting intelligently and just tracking them down and surprising them, they go and email the criminals to gloat about how they're catching them. The dumbest thing they could have possibly done.
It's just so stupid. Argh. - crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1read the bid history page for a good laugh.

- Darkmoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how the thieves tried to call him out on being "arrogant".
You come into a guys shop, get taped stealing his $4,000 computer, read his personal correspondence, identify yourself as the perp in 3 or 4 different ways, and blow off a chance to undo your mistake quietly...then when said victim unleashes massive net-retaliation on your ass...
...you get all testy because he called you a moron. - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1eBayISAPI.dll is the standard URL on ebay. Now, maybe if you are using Internet Explorer it thought it had a chance to be a virus and it's trying to execute the html ! :-)
- ayeaye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm... if i were the owner i wouldn't mention "valuable data" some many times in the listing. If the thief is pissed off enough he would probably just wipe the HD.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A question for the people out there... WHY ARE YOU RETARDS BIDDING ON THIS?! There are 61+ bids on "it" right now up to AU$305. Some people will bid on anything, I guess. Why not send me some of your throwaway money? Talk to me for more info ;p
- flowaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Australians - we are the smartest and the dumbest people all at once.
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get it! What do you get for winning this auction then? I sure do hope those bastards get caught. I hate thugs!
- abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe, only in Australia
- tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha... I didn't even catch that.
Weird how the human mind skips the first "the" in "the the".
I'm off to bed.
It's been fun. - sleepless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is some funny stuff...worth the digg...
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he he... 'as it is in the English dictionary'

- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stick a fork in those low life peices of *****,
They're done! - motherduce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good stuff - lucky they had surveillance video. My question is how could you ever leave your laptop so blatantly unprotected so it is so easy to steal?
- iSlayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What became a national thing has all of a sudden gone to international. The thugs will get caught with the evidence all ready presented to the police but here is the thing...the criminals know that they have been mentioned and without the proper security all their stuff will be gone in no time. I will doubt these guys will get their laptop back or any of the information if they were careless and stupid not to back up. Tough luck to the guys who put it on ebay though. Nothing more than thrill seekers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im from north bridge and i will keep my eye out for these punks chatswood police better out that new cop shop to good use
- costoa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He should've posted his PB's MAC address. While something like ifconfig can change it on the network layer it doesn't change it on the physical layer. As good as a serial number and AFAIK any changes won't survive a reboot.
- Bender1001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Easily dugg. Smart idea.
- madbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God help the thief if they ring Steve price on radio to explain the theft as he will verbally tear them to shreds.
- iSlayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One more thing to add to this is an ip address isnt enough to prove that these are the guys that did it. You have to prove that they were the ones that were behind the computer at the time which is much harder to do. But with video and phone number as well as addressing this on the radio they have to leave the country if they want to get away with it...hehehe
- daduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In my office, I have a brand new powerbook too: no video here, I simply lock the door everytime my office is empty (got several back up too, and insurance to refund my laptop).
Hard way learning one should back up he valuable data...
The guy should be fired, for a professional fault, I don't think this is the kind of advertisment his company wanted in the first place. - joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i read the auction, and all of your comments and i still don't get it.
if you win this auction, what do you win? - tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@yukevster:
