I am creating mosaic since the year 2000. So I have passed log times developing my own techniques.
Therefore, creating the final piece is not so much time taking.
The longest part is preparing the tiles.
This mosaic was an illustration for Fortune magazine. The Art Director asked me for a mosaic portrait of Steve Jobs made out of Apple products of the last 2-3 years. So I had to download every Apple product from the Apple PR site, create Alpha channels and make some corrections.
This took about 2-3 days for about 200 images.
Then I made some roughs and I collaborated with the Fortune staff for the selections of the base photo.
When we choose the right one I prepared some more roughs till this one and the one in black background that you can see in my Flickr photo stream.
Every mosaic is consisted of 5 layers with different sizes of tiles using my own scripts in a program amed Studio Artist. Then I made the final composition in Adobe Photoshop.
The whole work lasted something like 10 days.
But it was really fun to do it, as I am a mosaic addict and a big Apple and Steve Jobs' fan.

It's quite impossible to create realistic orange and pink skin tones with the latest apple products. There are not enough skin colored.

My problem is not with the artwork. I find it very impressive, and I think you are a great artist to be able to produce this. My problem is the people who idolize Steve Jobs, and will digg this just because it says "Steve Jobs" or has anything to do with "Apple".
In all honesty, Steve Jobs is a visionary, but he does nothing. He is a public figure who assigns the best of the best to do their job, and they do it. Let us, as a society, quit being so shallow and materialistic.
