- Godric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Jobs wouldn't even use a Macintosh when he returned to Apple. He used a NeXT machine until OS X came out.
- SixSider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Well, that was part of the point of Apple purchasing NeXT and pulling Jobs back in.
- penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26NEXT was the core of mac OS X. When Steve came back, he made apple buy up all of NEXT and get back all of his engineers. But, nice to have the link
- bobbob1016, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23we should point out that NEXT was Job's company before he came back to apple. before apple haters say something like "even Job's hates macs" which will be said if this gets to the front page.
- TheRascalKing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22I am so getting a next. All those features look SO much better than mac or PC.
But seriously, Steve Jobs presents this the exact same way as he does with new apple products now. cool. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15yah, um unix workstations in 1990 cost 10k... look at any of the sun/sgi offerings of the day...
- Godric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11leviathan3k, I read it in "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs" by Alan Deutschman.

http://lowendmac.com/orchard/05/0705.html - lfcfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is fantastic and a fun watch. I'm sure glad "Lip Service" never made it to OS X. I can just imagine an office buzzing with voice memos every time someone opens an email, which would be as annoying as hearing "Corporate accounts receivable, just a moment" a million times.
- cidkato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Blamo, I'm Home"
Best line. - jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10smooth scrolling = scrolls like butter? ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And here's my favorite Windows video ever:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wBvB7AAinJw&search=windows%201.0 - galisus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9During the story with Audion developers about the future of iTunes they recieved an email from Steve.. using NeXT's Mail.app ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Anyone who has listened to Steve Jobs give his keynotes at MacWorld can probably tell this... a lot of the way he talks when demoing applications sounds the exact same today as it did then.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Although it's not all that special now, think of what was coming out on Macs and PC's at that point.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11My company was paying nearly $20K for SUN workstations back then for serious graphics work.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8here's one of my favorite videos about macintosh ever: http://youtube.com/watch?v=5zhMD9syTIw&search=NeXT%20Macintosh%20Mac%20OSX%20Steve%20Jobs
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's a piece of computer history that not everyone knows about or has seen?
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Tracking? VCR? LOLOLOL!
- spin-docta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Its nice to know that the difference between the late 80's, early 90's and 2006 is nicer looking graphics!!!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It is also diggworthy since he emails music through email, RIAA is gonna be on him soon!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why would you want scrolling on the left hand side...seems counterintuitive to me...and i'm left handed.

http://www.shoutcentral.com - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Heh. I've seen this and thought the same thing. Diggworthy.
- Skettalee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Oh yeah baby. Old school, I want it!!!
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Gotta love his hair style and bowtie. Hehe.
- counterplex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think this clip and others that are on the same page show one thing very well: Steve Jobs not only has been but still is the only true showman of the computer industry. I don't know about you but I've heard CEO's from Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Adobe, Macromedia and a whole host of other companies speak and Jobs just blows them out of the water.
There was a slashdot article a while back talking about the amount of preparation that goes into a Jobs keynote and it made me realize that not only does he not rest on his laurels but he takes out multiple insurance policies on his performances by constant rehearsals, keeping a strict eye on deadlines and the like. This is a man who likes to be in control more than anything else. He's also a man who knows his strengths and plays to them.
Compare him to any other person at his level in the industry and they come off looking like your nephew showing off his first magic trick while he comes off as David Copperfield. I'm a fan of his work ethic and design principles and realize a lot of people have a lot to learn from him. - deb6404, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Awesome. It's amazing to see how long ago these ideas were around, and to trace them to the current product.
- hangtown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Probably because he is the same person. People's styles of speech don't usually change significantly in adulthood.
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I actually used to own a NeXT. a NeXTStation Color. I was impressed back then and still am. Though it was a tad slow on the 68040 that it ran on. But still, back then it was the cat's-ass!
- KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13I think that macgabriel87 has won the dumbass comment award for this submission. I hope you keep it up and make me laugh on some other stories, too. Please, don't get intelligent on us, we need to be humored every now and then. Thanks for being a dumbass. Made my day. :D
- batguano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have always said since His Steveness came back to Apple... 'NeXT bought Apple with Apple's money'... A quick look at the board circa 2000 shows that most of the dudes in charge were NeXT people (haven't checked lately)
On a side note... 'Pixar bought Disney with Disney's money'... Discuss. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because you and I read from left to right. Most text content is in the left-hand side of the window, so it would make sense to mark the scroll position on the left as well, instead of way over on the right where you're not looking.
If it was a window in the physical world, then it makes sense to have the scroll bar on the right, otherwise your arm would have to cut across the page. But that's not a problem with a mouse.
I forget the story, but I think the original Mac GUI designers toyed with the idea of putting the scroll bar on the left, but eventually decided to use the right side of the screen for whatever reason. - maledin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I love how he insults both PC and Mac.
'Tis great. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3anyone have a mirror?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Or at a lot of the sun/sgi offerings of today
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why did this get taken off the front page? This is kinda cool and I hadn't seen it before. Does Digg still have that lame rule that if only 10 people complain about a story it gets taken off the front page?
1. who would label this lame?
2. why is that policy still in effect here at Digg? - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey I'm the Irish one! are you too? ('tis great)
Did anyone spot 'spotlight' ? - methodshop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i was able to download this clip and convert it to iPod Video.
back in 1991, i bet never in Steve's wildest dreams would he have guessed that 1) 15 years later, someone in Austrailia (blatherskyte) would digitize this NeXT VHS demo tape, 2) they would upload it to a free video sharing site and then 3) someone would convert it to an Apple portable video player that Steve introduced to the world himself. - leviathan3k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8godric: Not that I doubt you, but do you have a reference for that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> And where's our bread crumb bar in the Finder, Steve?
It's there, Cmd-click the title bar. It works in Finder, as well as most Cocoa apps like TextPad. I think it's one of the greatest features of OS X, actually. If you open some random file from, say, the recent items menu, you can just cmd-click the title bar to the path to the file.
It works in Safari, too. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whole thing is cool beans. Had to blog about it, even though I'm sure my blog is filled with errors. I'd noticed the copyright at the end of the video say it was 1992. I remember two years later getting a Macintosh Quadra 840av for around $5,000 (so the NeXT Step box couldn't have been cheap). Around the time this came out, I think Macintosh graphics users were just getting into more advanced versions of "Pixel Paint" and Photoshop was just starting to get its train rolling as it prepared to hit 2.5 a year later.
There's a nice NeXT Step timeline here:
http://www.guidebookgallery.org/timelines/nextstep - Matteo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well when I submitted the story it did say there were duplicates but I didn't see anything about NeXT, my bad. I'll search better NeXT time.
- delinka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, cuz he shoulda emailed it through GNUtella...
oh, yeah, digg - duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love how he says that NeXTstep is coming out next year on the i486. Looking back at this, the whole Macintel thing shouldn't have come as any surprise at all.
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's exactly what happened. openstep/Rhapsody/OS X never left the x86 platform. Apple kept on developing a secret x86 build for all OS X versions, during 5 years.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its too bad that onion-skinning is still a problem on alt OS's when moving my window around the screen (ubuntu linux/gnome). Cant wait to finally get XGL up and running, bye bye to the onion skinning.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Look at the other offerings of the time - you'll see that NeXTStep was by far the superior. You, my friend, are an ass. Jobs owned the company that made the best operating system of the time, and now is CEO of the company with the best operating system. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an uninformed twit. Take a look into OS design, and programming, and perhaps you will see for yourself why it is.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, he practically brought a whole bunch of NeXT features into OS X. I guess I've always knew this but seeing is believing!
- cctoronto05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! Is that Steve Ballmer vid for real?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He had to. He didn't work for Apple any longer, and he felt that the NeXT machine was better at the time.
It's business, and he is, primarily, a businessman. -
