- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -8/+35I believe 2007 will be a huge year for Apple, and it's not because Steve Jobs said it. It's actually because the company has never looked like it has so much to look forward to, and yet they're right now there still very strong at the same time. Just has their biggest quarter ever, and they could easily break that record again next year. Apple is on a roll right now, with the intel transition just complete, the iPhone coming, and all those juicy patents to look forward to.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Yeah better than he said about 2006 "It will be an alright year, nothing that special"
or 2005 "Eh, expect some cool stuff".
How is this new, every CEO says this about their company every year. - kotatsu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Wake me up when you can get Photoshop on Linux and I might take a look. And no, the Gimp isn't the same.
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11He's stating the obvious.
This year, Apple created the momentum that is setting themselves up for near market dominance in 2007. Just think about it; the complete transition to x86 and boot camp make every single Mac capable of running various OS options. The iPod in all of its glory, still maintains market dominance in the DAP world. iTunes continues to gain a foothold in music distribution and is the wide leader in online music sales (and rapidly expands to other multimedia). With the looming iTV, iPhone rumors, movie sales, and Leopard... why wouldn't 2007 be one of the most exciting years?
It's logical that this just might be the year that Apple makes its comeback. Unlike Microsoft, Apple is leading an assault on consumers from almost every angle. Granted, saying that is probably meant to stir investors; but, it should pretty easy to see for yourself :) - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No, that's not how it was. Apple stuck with the existing form factors because it was important to emphasize the similarity: looks the same, works the same only faster, etc.
At least, that's how it was described to me by friends in product marketing when I worked there.
Comparing the G5s and the Mac Pro, for example, you'll see that there are enough changes internally that the cost of designing a new exterior would have been pretty much a wash. Apple will come up with new case designs when they decide that people are getting bored with the perforated aluminum and white poycarbonate. We're not there yet, and we probably won't be there for another year or more.

Has there ever been a year that wasn't "the year of Linux"? - ismoke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@pathy
Yes. But they don't have the hype that Apple has.
People associate Microsoft with computers, PCs more precisely, and Windows even more precisely. Most "normal" people I know hate computers, not technology, just computers. Now, Apple is associated with the hottest thing you can do with a computer these days (for most people) and that is download and put music on your ipod. Yes, your ipod, what else do you want??? I mean, it's soooo the greatest thing EVER. Dude, did you see the new nanos?? They are just totally dope.
My point is, what the nerds that read this site think isn't really important. Among "normal people, Apple is cool, Microsoft is boring. At least that's the feeling I get from the people of my entourage. - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that picture of steve reminds me of willy wonka. He looks like he's full of magic and mystery.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6> I highly doubt Apple with become dominant in the home computer
> market - If only because someone like Dell could just aggresively
> under cut them and slice them out of the deal.
But what's driving a lot of interest right now is Apple's ability to run both Windows and Mac OS X. That's something Dell cannot sell you so they can't undercut Apple at all. They're not in the same market (in that sense.)
> Microsoft is on the offensive too, don't forget (Although the actual
> PC Market doesn't matter at all about if they're running Vista or XP,
> or whatever - Like you said, Bootcamp.),
That's all true, but from my point of view, it looks like Apple is trying very hard to sell a machine where Windows becomes a subset of the whole thing rather than the centerpiece. You run OS X primarily and boot into Windows for whatever non-Mac things you might have. Sure, MS profits from that but in the long-run, they may lose users as people become more comfortable with OS X and the Mac. I would think MS would consider that a threat but I've read that they are cooperating with Apple in getting Windows to run on Mac hardware. Strange.
> They'll be offering music and such soon as well. It's all reactionary
> sure, but Microsoft aren't stagnent.
The iPod was released 5 years ago. MS is just getting around to releasing their own player. What's your definition of stagnant, anyway? - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11I highly doubt Apple with become dominant in the home computer market - If only because someone like Dell could just aggresively under cut them and slice them out of the deal.
Microsoft is on the offensive too, don't forget (Although the actual PC Market doesn't matter at all about if they're running Vista or XP, or whatever - Like you said, Bootcamp.), the Zune, the 360, Vista, all those social networking sites they've gobbled up.
They'll be offering music and such soon as well. It's all reactionary sure, but Microsoft aren't stagnent. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"it looks like Apple is trying very hard to sell a machine where Windows becomes a subset of the whole thing rather than the centerpiece."
Close, but it's more like positioning windows as the legacy crap that Apple will help people get away from.
-jcr - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those that do not think 2007 is going to be another banner year for Apple despite what Jobs or others say - what exactly do you think is going to bring Apple down?
Are computer sales going to go down? If so, why, when the trends have all been up and there really is no new competition to unseat them where they have been selling (primarily really good laptops).
Do you think something is going to stop the iPod juggernant? If so why, and what will do it that has not been tried already. Especially with an all-new video focused iPod on the way.
Do you think that ITMS will fail to grow and succeed in the same way with video sales that they have with music? Especially with the iTv coming out, which you know Apple will market quite heavily?
The last is actually the most speculative in my book, in that I don't know if anyone can really produce a video devices that will grab consumer mindshare in the same way the iPod did - even Apple. But even if that fails, the other areas still look incredibly strong and can carry the company into record numbers yet again.
One last note about ITMS and video, look for a dramatic upsurge in TV buying from ITMS now that the resolution is practical to use as a true replacement for cable and satellite TV or even DVR recording. - kneath, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9No way... a company announced that the future is going to be more exciting/profitable in a quarterly earnings announcement?!??
Man, that hasn't ever happened in the business world before. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to be outdone, Steve Ballmer announced he'll be throwing more chairs in 2007, possibly a desk too. You'll just have to wait and see!
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps you did not see the results for this past quarter and how Apple has 5.8% of the US market placing them in the top five.
- Wsucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Many have speculated that 2007 will be a key year in Apples rise because, as has been stated, the X86 transition is complete. But more over, iTV is going to be introduced which is the missing link for their media strategy. My guess is that there will also be an iPhone introduced as well.
Big deal you say, yes it is a really big deal. Essentially Apple will refine and redefine Slingbox, TiVo, instant chat and wireless communications next year. iTV isn't just a wireless video connection to your Mac, its also going to be a Slingbox and TiVo in one device. With addition of excellent software, like Front Row, iTunes and iChat, you can expect people to start sharing music, video and holding video conferences directly from their iTV connected LCD displays to anywhere else in the world.
These technologies aren't new, but it takes someone like Apple to tie all of it together seemlessly so that the 'dumb' end user can and will want to work it all.
In summary, 2007 will be the year Apple takes over the entertainment room and your television. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dell has already been undercutting Apple prices - where they can. They do not have so much margin that they can really reduce costs further than they do already.
If anything Apple is the one that can bring margins down if the fighting got really rough and tuble since they have a lot more leeway - but they are content to let sales grow at a slower pace, where they can keep on top of manufacturing issues that may arise with greater volume. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now what if Sony has some surprise integration with Apple and iTV...
Just speculation.
As for the Zune - good luck with that, even at SP1.
As for the main comment, I basically agree with the main point however the Slingbox is a device that gets video from the TV room to your computer, and iTV goes the other way round. I think Apple's guess that it's more important for people to get video to a TV than away from it is a good one though. - pvdnyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, Steve Jobs was not even on the conference call - so he never said it. That statement was from a press release on Apple's website. Check it out for yourself. Nevertheless, I am excited about the new stuff...and forget about 2007 -- I want my video iPod (the real deal) before xmas '06 -- I also want the stock price to go up because of the inevitable frenzy that will ensue once that thing is released.

Not as long as they keep commercial developers off linux with the likes of RMS and your average slashdot linux user/troll.
The linux community does not understand what easy to use means and they do not subscribe to the KISS motto. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I keep on hearing how people say that Apple will never make it big in the home market. I have to ask why. Is it because MSFT dominates the business market? What does that have to do with anything in the home market? Do you really have to be compatible with the office? If you do have to connect to the office, why can't you use citrix or terminal server clients for OS X?
Let's face it, except for games, MSFT does not offer the optimal home computer environment. Does the average joe really need to have three security programs running on their machines at home? Does the average joe really have to use a machine that has a bloated registry stored in a binary file which could corrupt any minute?
Doesn't OS X combined with the iLife apps make more sense for people that want to surf the net, shared the photos and edit their home movies?
Do you really need to have a PVR inside your computer or would a cable box with a PVR feature make more sense for the average joe? - opticwind, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Because this quarter, people will start buying.
(Sorry, had to suckerpunch the macboys. But it's good to hear Apple is kicking off with high expectations, I bet they'll deliver.) - tim04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1great...another ipod I'm gonna have to buy...I hate how the previous generation always becomes laughable and obsolete the minute a new one comes out
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah, Apple is going to SUCK!
*runs off to buy AAPL* - joeriksson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would think a great year of 2007, would be if Apple and Microsoft would particpate on areas where synergy effects would be found (i.e music, videos, devices, hardware, software etc) The best of both worlds, that would be a great 2007 to me!
- ComputerNap, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Really good to hear. It makes me all the more excited about Macworld this year! :]
- ketha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3My view is that 'intel' transition was originally going to be in new form factors but they were finding it difficult to pull it off fast, so the released them in current products, next year we will see a new ipod, iTV, and a whole new range of mac products... possibly a whole new 'look' for apple... who knows what else.. it's not like Apple to really push the boat out too far in one go... (oh, and the iPhone, Tiger and perhaps an iSlate)... so yeah, I can see his point. Apple will probably relaunch its entire range.
